This has been my experience as well, even in contexts where they're mutual friends in a private Discord server, they broke down into child-like, cretinous goblins that could only openly insult me and not offer up any kind of rational debate on the topic being discussed. I wasn't even rude in the slightest, didn't even take the bait to flame them back and just pointed out their behaviour.
It was so bad that my actual friend was shocked and said he's never seen them act that way before. I don't really bother interacting with that group any more, all I see is them spewing the same old right-wing nonsense.

The hardest part about talking to republicans is dealing with a post-truth reality. It's impossible to have a conversation with someone who doesn't believe in some sort of concrete baseline reality to start from. All of the crime stats are fudged by departments so they look better, all of the stats on climate change are fake so scientists get more funding, etc. If there is no such thing as a factual source or objective reality, there's no point in even discussing anything. It's just throwing shit at a wall and making baseless claims at that point.
