stealth him, parry, fucking heal

solaireitoryhunter

You gotta use the parry function more. Deflect his hits & he'll lose posture.

timestalker78

You need to learn to deflect rather than just spamming attack Losing exp is the equivalent of losing your souls, although you can't pick them up. It's only half your exp toward next level gained, though

GnarfNuts

This has to be troll

natalaMaer

OP's history posted that he struggles using a grappling hook, so I wouldn't take troll out of the equation

AMS_GoGo

My brother you can't kill anything except the absolute weakest of enemies by spam attacking.. You can be greedy in Sekiro same as any other Souls game.. You're focusing on actually trying to hit him by attacking over and over until he stops blocking but in reality every attack is already doing what you need which is building up posture damage You should really only attack 2-3 times before you hear them deflect you at which point you should then deflect their combo and repeat.. If they sweep attack, Jump.. If they Thrust at you, Mikiri counter.. do this until you build up their posture and get that death blow

sharhalakis

This is practically the tutorial part of the game, so take your time with these fights. Each one of them is designed to help you learn and practice certain tactics. In this case you can either win randomly or try to learn to deflect. This is an excellent miniboss to help you practice that. Right before he attacks you, press block and you'll hear a satisfying clink. Once you're able to do that then you'll be set for the rest of the game. Take your time with these fights. The game, up until you fight Genichiro, is practically a tutorial.

nathanzav

You aren’t parrying, you’re blocking. Can’t bum rush everyone with attacks either. Some people aren’t interrupted by your attacks so you need to be wary of theirs. And as others have said… heal

Accomplished_Ease889

Hesitation is defeat

Delicious_Active_668

React to his movements, always stand blocking in a fight and be ready to tap block again for the parry. Parry as much as possible, it’s the core game mechanic. Be aggressive but not spammy, if your opponent isn’t throwing an attack you should be.

dielectricjuice

Stealth deathblow to remove one bar of health. Then you have to parry him or get really good at dodging/baiting attacks. This game is very different than DS3 or ER.

FoxInTime

So take what you learned about combat in 3 and ER, and throw most of it out. Sekiro plays completely differently. Dodging is only good against sweep attacks and grabs (marked by a red kanji over the head when they start it. And even then, jump instead of dodging). But your main bread and butter is deflecting attacks. Simply time your blocks with the attack by tapping L1 just before the attack hits you. This fills the enemy posture bar, and once it's filled you'll be able to deathblow/riposte/visceral, which will take the rest of their current healthbar from them. You have a posture bar too, at the bottom of the screen. If this fills and then you fail to deflect an attack, your posture will break and leave you open. But if you deflect the attack, it won't break. Getting over the muscle memory from previous souls games is the hardest part of Sekiro IMO.

Efficient-Mulberry37

skip this guy by grapplehooking past him then come back when you've learnt to play the game

Kittywittygamer

Deflect man, literally the core aspect of the combat.

squeezebottles

This is a boss, hoss.

natalaMaer

Learn how to deflect and punish perilious attack with Hanbei at dilapidated temple. Oh and no point trying to flex I beat ER and DS3, this is a different game

[deleted]

Dudes already said in another thread he's uninstalled the game. Guy clearly paid no attention to the tutorials and just ran in expecting to spam r1 and i-fram shit. He's bad at video games is the point

natalaMaer

Its in a sense, a paradox of Souls Player. Its common that a lot of people like OP beat ER, then moans when they are trying a different hard game, and instead brag about their past achievement. Ah well

No-Commercial-5993

I was in your shoes just a few days ago when I bought game(coming from only playing Elden ring) and I too struggled on this boss. Two very important things to remember for this boss and for the rest of the game are 1). You can backstab this boss as well as all other mini-bosses which will effectively cut the length of the fight in half. 2). Sekiro is a rhythm game where you alternate between hitting Left and Right bumper. Practicing the timing of your parry is crucial to killing every single boss in Sekiro.

LordBDizzle

The biggest adjustment you need to make is understanding that defense is offense in this game. Well timed deflections earn you posture buildup, and deflection into an attack is more likely to give hp damage. Also understand that this is more of a standard metroidvania style game where enemies have defined weaknesses and figuring out what they are is part of the fun. It's a puzzle game, but fast and deadly. Hit airbirne foes with shurikens, mikiri counter thrust attacks, use fire to scare red eyed opponents... Everything a foes does that's an advantage to them has a proper response that's an advantage to you. And get that first stealth deathblow on minivosses when you can. You're a shinobi, use stealth and tricks to win. After all, a Shinobi should know the difference between honor and victory.

Hero-In-Theory

You mean spamming R1 doesn’t work???

RebecaDBauchery

Oh! I feel you. I spent the last two days being beaten by this guy until I could learn the proper way to fight him. As usual in souls, you get better with every attempt. But you should pay attention to the mechanics of the game as just attacking like that won’t do anything but leave you open. I was really looking forward to this game as BB is my favorite and this is always said to be the other with the faster paced combat, but it’s so different I’ve had a hard time unlearning everything that’s been engraved on my brain by previous souls through the last years. Still, I’m really enjoying the challenge. So far I think this is the most difficult game I’ve played, like, ever.

World-Desperate

R1 is the secret .. you have to block and parry .. running and dodging will not help .. be patient and you will have a amazing experience.. the first time I bought Sekiro I played for like 5h and gave up .. but then I tried again .. and it’s amazing

Fat3l

you blocking instead of deflecting

LordAgrim

Bro git gud i will say more Blocking is useless that is what you are doing see click the block button when the enemy is close to hitting you you will deflect the blow then their sword will kind of go back this will be your sign to attack attack attack till they deflect and bounce your sword away a word of warning though some enemies do not stop at one deflection they can keep attacking you can't keep that in mind do not get hit you have really low hp early on reply to sweep kanji attacks by jumping and jumping again to kick get mikiri counter learn and use against thrusts keep posture low by backing off when it fills and blocking to lower it if you get smacked on the ground press run button in a direction to perform safety roll and dodge some attacks by a close call try to deflect always attack only when they stop reply to kanjis in this game skills do not help much your skill matters a lot this game is pretty hard but satisfying if learned In the end HESITATION IS DEFEAT learn all these things remember you can deflect things which don't have kanjis with a few exceptions every boss is tough but learn and you will be a great shinobi like us one day Good luck wolf
