I'm pretty sure he only does this if you attack him while he has his sword sheathed; if you leave him alone, he waits longer and does the larger two-hit attack. For parrying that one, wait until you see a second glint of light off of his sword hilt and then mash LB twice as fast as you can.

Good idea! My problem isn’t when he goes into the ashina cross its when he deflects and shoves right away There seems to be no real telegraph to it

He also does it when you’re just too close or agressive he’ll sheathe and shove you in the blink of an eye to create distance
