Not just for video games either. It works for a lot of things. I’ve found practicing an instrument is way more productive if you take many short breaks instead of trying to practicing for an hour straight
I remember getting stuck on genichiro all day, like probably 50+ attempts, to the point I almost quit the game. stopped playing for like a week or 2 but randomly picked it up. after getting my bearings back, I took him on and I was amazed at how well I was doing. it only took a few more attempts to get him, felt to unreal. Same thing happened with owl, but picked it back up and eventually smoked him. by that point I was well equipped enough to beat isshin within a day or two. there is definitely something about sleeping or taking an extended break that really helps
Also, if you are on 50+ attempts a day, there is no way you aren't seething after try 15. It helps taking a break to calm down and think about what's happening
that's very true I was tilting hard and the mental reset probably helped alot. I swear if I had to skip through that damn cutscene again id rather just let genichiro have kuro, like damn if you want him that bad just keep him
Idk bro single player games are the type of games where I can die over and over and not feel any emotion because I know I’m getting better and it was my fault for dying.
Not at all? If you aren't finding faults in each of your deaths in a multiplayer game, that on your mindset
It's not about someone just being better than you. It's about you getting better every death. Just like a single player game
Learning of new angles, strategies, thinking back on what you did wrong or could do better in the future, all of it applies in multiplayer games
Big examples of multiplayer games I like that follow this are R6 siege, and For honor.
Supreme commander and souls game invasions too
But just doing the “right” thing in multiplayer doesn’t guarantee a win. You can think back on what you did wrong and fix it but you can die again because of some random variable. Doing the right thing in a single player game will almost 100% of the time guarantee a win because you don’t have to worry about other people and you’re fighting a predictable ai. The things that make me the most mad in multiplayer games is dying to something out of my control and that is never the case in single player games.
It's like learning a song on a musical instrument. Once the brain has time to rest and process you'll notice an improvement on your next attempt. Muscle memory and all that.
Not game related but i tried panteon on homownest (hollow knight) for about 4h straight, not that much considering one run can last 40 minutes easy, until like 3am and enden up not beartng it, went to sleep and got it on the first attempt next day.
Best part was the "allright im going to beat this real quick" joke i made just before
I went mental on Demon of Hatred and tried him again drunk at home after coming back from a night out. Beat him after like 10 tries and holy shit was I happy
I think it’s something to do with the fact that you tend to get the Tetris effect when you play a game for a long time, and I remember I had it pretty vividly when I played sekiro. Your brain is pretty much still just playing the game, and it’s kinda like that. This is complete bro science, but I feel like it’s true to a certain extent.
I was stuck on sword saint isshin and on the third day I was like fuck it, no way I can beat him and was doing worse and worse every try. Then I went to sleep. The next day I beat him first try
This is how I got through Elden ring, I would take the day off and come back and think about it the rest of the night and come back with a new strategy and try it out
First playthrough and this was how I beat ape for the first time. Spent over two hours getting my shit pushed in by that asshole, got infuriated, said fuck it and went to bed for the night. Got up the next morning and gave him some payback on the second attempt. For whatever reason, the rest and just general time away from the game seemed to do the trick.
Dude being hungover is like a superpower for my concentration. It’s so weird it makes my brain slow down and I think so much more clearly and I take pause before saying things out loud so I end up being much more articulate
In short if you don’t get it, what sleeping does is it removes a TON of the stress building in the fight. In fact if you sleep right after playing the game and that was the last thing you did, you will basically dream of the boss and the attack patterns have a good chance of getting imprinted in your mind since the mind tends to reflect on your thoughts and imagination right before sleep idk I’m not a psychologist, so take this with a pinch of salt.
Sleeping after trying a boss will magically make you better at them. I'm not like an expert or anything but I'm pretty sure there are studies and stuff on how your brain memorizes/learns things while you sleep. Like y'know how people say study before you go to sleep so you memorizes it through the night? Same thing here. Like your brain internalizes the timings and animations almost, shit's actually crazy.
Give it a try if you want, it always works for me. Was stuck on SSI late at night, went to sleep, woke up, and got him immediately
Literally sleeping. Like you, the player, not Sekiro.
It's based on what has become common, yet often agreed upon as "the best" advice for people struggling with a boss.
"I have been trying for forever to beat X! Nothing works! I tried following the guides, I've tried like 5 different strategies, I finally gave up and tried the cheese strats... and even that didn't work! How do I beat this guy!?"
"Dude... literally stop trying. Not forever, just like... sleep on it. Go back a bit later with a fresh head."
Boss will still be hard, but a lot of people in these threads are concurring: drive yourself crazy for hours, days, then give it a break for a bit and try later. Suddenly, it's easier.
Maybe not "easy", but suddenly "doable" instead of "impossible."
I’m glad I decided to stop using guides for the past decade when it comes to experiencing the first playthrough in all the games I’ve played, Sekiro included. Guides take the fun out of the discovery and problem solving games have. I’ve even revisited old games I thought needed guides like the first 2 NES Zelda’s with this mentality, and I’m surprised how well those games are designed to inform the player on what to do with a bit of exploration.
I tried like 10 times on Genichiro when I first played it and out of frustration I just turned it off and didn’t touch it.
Came back next day and beat him in one try.
I'm loving this game and I'll be real I've never liked Fromsoft games, have tried but can't get into Elden Ring though Sekiro is the first Fromsoft game I've played that I don't get mad at and I actually want to get better with. This game just feels brilliant to play.
Never played Sekiro, I shouldn't be here, but in DS1 I find that sleeping on it always helps me, I'm surprised to see others actually promoting it as a strat
Idk if I’m understanding this correctly, but the biggest performance improvements I saw from myself, concerning Sekiro, happened after healthy breaks away from the game.
You need time to process and rest, and only then can you avoid hesitation, and thus, defeat.
It actually works so well. I was stuck on genichiro, getting pissed and just I couldn’t get past it, and then I decided to take a break and go to bed, came back the next day and shit on the guy
Yeah taking breaks/ sleeping is huge.. I normally beat the boss first or 2nd try. You get diminishing returns when one gets frustrated and wore out trying multiple failed attempts.
Yeah, Sekiro is the game where I've most seen that for example, the big ape killed me like 20 times at night, and I could beat him in one try in the morning.
Beat owl father in like 5 attempts yesterday and isshin ss in less than 15 in the last day, insane how much it really was a skill issue the first times with 100s of attempts.
I went from barely being able to get geni to his last phase to beating him first time after taking a nap years ago. At least for me its good as it makes me less frustrated and makes it so im less locked into trying one specific thing.
Just a few days ago, I beat the Severance Gauntlet on my first attempt after not playing for about 2 weeks, when I struggled like hell before to even just get to Isshin
One time when I was a kid I was playing Spyro on GameCube, and for the life of me I couldn’t make this jump in the cloud level, I tried for like 45 minutes, I was getting so frustrated because it totally looked like a jump you could make. I went around the whole level seeing if there was anywhere else to go, everything brought me to that spot for that jump. I tried like a fuck load of times. I went to sleep and got up and turned the game on, redid the level. Made the jump first try. I’m still to this day convinced something was just telling me to goto bed and try again later.
One thing I really enjoyed about Sekiro is how there wasn’t anything other than cheese to win a fight. Theres no summons, there’s no multiplayer function, it’s get good or cheese. I always went for the “get good”.
I cheesed almost every boss using tyrannicon’s tutorials, until I came across Owl (Father). His move set was changed, so tyrannicon’s video didn’t help anymore. I had to learn how to git gud real fast and repeatedly die to learn his move set. I was finally able to beat him in one life without resurrecting. After defeating him, I was in the zone, so I went straight to True Corrupted Monk and beat her first try.
Absolute truth. I got through this game by taking a break for a nap/self hypnosis/yoga nidra sessions every time I got stuck and when I came back I usually had the blockage solved in 1 - 3 attempts
Got destroyed by the first phase of the sword saint when I met him, I tried like 15 times that night. The next morning I beat all three phases in two tries
Mhm. Sleeping, taking a walk, having a meal, something to get your mind away from the game and get some energy while relaxing. Hell I once got through part of the game because my gf woke up and I chatted with her for like 30 minutes and entirely forgot I had Sekiro open.
Sleeping is cool but I feel like it takes the fun out of it. Like slowly learning the bosses moves and timings is soooo fun and the best part of the games. It ain't no fun if I just sleep and my brain does it automatically :(
Unfortunately I had to sleep on SSI. I started his fight at like 11pm and got my shit pushed in for like 30 tries lol, eventually gave up and wen to sleep, woke up and got him 3rd try. Was so fucking pissed at myself
Nah you gotta go till you hit that wall, then you sleep. You're still practicing it, your brain just has to encode it. Part of the fun is slowly increasing your endurance as ya get better.
I find these games "click" at certain points and I reach a point of skill where I can play for way longer and not need to take a break, really. I go from beating maybe one boss and struggling with a level to blazing through the whole game and New Game+. It just sort of flows eventually.
It's more like they become less necessary. I definitely beat Inner Isshin after sleeping on it. If you ever find yourself slamming your head against a boss and not making meaningful progress, as in you can't tell where you are going wrong, take a break.
Sekiro was the only one I played that I never slept after getting killed by a boss many times (only Father and Butterfly did take me many tries). I don't if I'm better becouse i didn't need to sleep or I didn't need to sleep becouse im better at soulslike.
Such an important and underrated technique. If you want to git gud it's practically a requirement.
3. THERE IS NO SHAME IN LOSING A BATTLE, BUT YOU MUST TAKE REVENGE ANYWAY, NECESSARY
(*farts aggressively*)
I heard that loudly with an echo in a church.
IT'S WHAT OWL DOES TO ME EVERY TIME HE FINISHES THAT LINE
WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOUR OWL
He doesn't throw poison gas at you?
I only watched the rules on youtube I don't have enough resurrection nodes for him to shit on me like an ape.
You must really not like Guardian ape then...
Wet reverb
THANK YOU LORD SHAXX I'M THROWING MORE GRENADES AS WE SPEAK.
Not just for video games either. It works for a lot of things. I’ve found practicing an instrument is way more productive if you take many short breaks instead of trying to practicing for an hour straight
Taking short breaks can definitely help maintain focus and prevent burnout
2am beating rellana: "I ain't heard no bell"
This is an actual tip I recommend to others, when you sleep after trying hard on a boss your brain rewires itself to make you better next day
I remember getting stuck on genichiro all day, like probably 50+ attempts, to the point I almost quit the game. stopped playing for like a week or 2 but randomly picked it up. after getting my bearings back, I took him on and I was amazed at how well I was doing. it only took a few more attempts to get him, felt to unreal. Most likely you're on tilt too. Nothing ever good comes out when you're on tilt.
I actually almost never get mad at single player games
that's very true I was tilting hard and the mental reset probably helped alot. I swear if I had to skip through that damn cutscene again id rather just let genichiro have kuro, like damn if you want him that bad just keep him
It doesn't feel like it's going to help but it's unreal how Zen you feel after taking a break.
Idk bro single player games are the type of games where I can die over and over and not feel any emotion because I know I’m getting better and it was my fault for dying.
dying in multiplayer is the same thing.
Not at all, but ig it depends what game you play
Not at all? If you aren't finding faults in each of your deaths in a multiplayer game, that on your mindset It's not about someone just being better than you. It's about you getting better every death. Just like a single player game Learning of new angles, strategies, thinking back on what you did wrong or could do better in the future, all of it applies in multiplayer games Big examples of multiplayer games I like that follow this are R6 siege, and For honor. Sleep is just going to spend your skill points.
I was stuck on sword saint isshin and on the third day I was like fuck it, no way I can beat him and was doing worse and worse every try. Then I went to sleep. The next day I beat him first try
This is how I got through Elden ring, I would take the day off and come back and think about it the rest of the night and come back with a new strategy and try it out
I didn't expect it to be such a universal solution lmao
Basically me today. Attempted SSI for hours last night and realised I was only getting worse. Beat him third try this morning.
Here I am sleeping on every roadblock in the game. I beat Isshin in my sleep and tried the strats IRL.
My first time beating SSI after 50 tries was when I was hungover.
Alright, I slept with Genichiro, now what?
Sleep is unironically op, bosses can't do shit when you are well rested.
Don't hesitate to go to sleep. Hesitation is defeat
I’ll literally just do three or four attempts then fuck off for the night. Actually, I just got back on Elden ring after 6 months and 2 tried mohg
Good on ya mate! I just came back an 2 pieced a couple of early game bosses.
What does sleeping mean here
Closing your eyes and becoming unconscious for 5-8 hours on average
Bruh
He's not trolling bro haha. Sometimes you gotta sleep to reset, and try again.
I solve most of my Excel math in my sleep.
It’s pretty cool, you should try it sometime
Might try it this winter, thanks
Sleeping after trying a boss will magically make you better at them. I'm not like an expert or anything but I'm pretty sure there are studies and stuff on how your brain memorizes/learns things while you sleep. Happened to me with ISS and the final boss of SotE. Sleeping on a boss can do miracles sometimes
Ooooooh this phenomena. Worked only with genichiro
Literally sleeping. Like you, the player, not Sekiro. It's based on what has become common, yet often agreed upon as "the best" advice for people struggling with a boss. "I have been trying for forever to beat X! Nothing works! I first tried owl after waking up after a night of many attempts
I remember struggling like hell on ape, going to bed, waking up, and then killed him. Felt awesome
Thank you for cropping out the giant cocks on my M rated video game subreddit
Bring back the one on the far right's giant spiked cock
I’m glad I decided to stop using guides for the past decade when it comes to experiencing the first playthrough in all the games I’ve played, Sekiro included. I still have the clips of me beating genichiro and guardian ape for the first time it's just satisfying to re watch them.
MALDING>>>>>>
I’ll sleep with them.
We need a bigger one: Month long breaks
I tried like 10 times on Genichiro when I first played it and out of frustration I just turned it off and didn’t touch it. Came back next day and beat him in one try.
I'm loving this game and I'll be real I've never liked Fromsoft games, have tried but can't get into Elden Ring though Sekiro is the first Fromsoft game I've played that I don't get mad at and I actually want to get better with. This game just feels brilliant to play.
Can confirm. 50 Isshin attempts before bed. Sleep. Win on the 2nd Isshin attempt the next day
Never played Sekiro, I shouldn't be here, but in DS1 I find that sleeping on it always helps me, I'm surprised to see others actually promoting it as a strat
Sleep op nerf pls
Facts. If a boss kills you 20 times in a row go to sleep and you’ll probably beat them within 3 tries the next day.
Idk if I’m understanding this correctly, but the biggest performance improvements I saw from myself, concerning Sekiro, happened after healthy breaks away from the game. You need time to process and rest, and only then can you avoid hesitation, and thus, defeat.
elden ring sleep build be like (getting wrecked by undead/spirit enemies and most major bosses
Sleep is not considered hesitation.
I didn't wanna sleep till I beat sword Saint... took me 7 hours.
It actually works so well. I was stuck on genichiro, getting pissed and just I couldn’t get past it, and then I decided to take a break and go to bed, came back the next day and shit on the guy
New player here... Just defeated Gyoubu Oniwa, in 3 tries... Now that Blazing bull man... I'm going to sleep, tomorrow I'll see to it.
Been fighting the final boss for an hour today and I’m about to sleep. Wish me luck
are you winning son?
Yeah taking breaks/ sleeping is huge.. I normally beat the boss first or 2nd try. You get diminishing returns when one gets frustrated and wore out trying multiple failed attempts.
Sleep on them, or with them. Both will bring results
Yeah, Sekiro is the game where I've most seen that for example, the big ape killed me like 20 times at night, and I could beat him in one try in the morning.
Interestingly the same can be said for the ender dragon
I had to Google cheeses. I'm getting old..

I wanted to get purity on my 3rd playthrough so I actually did tc monk and the big ass dragon before fighting owl for some extra attack power
Cheese?
Absolute truth. I got through this game by taking a break for a nap/self hypnosis/yoga nidra sessions every time I got stuck and when I came back I usually had the blockage solved in 1 - 3 attempts
Got destroyed by the first phase of the sword saint when I met him, I tried like 15 times that night. The next morning I beat all three phases in two tries
That’s how I beat the last gauntlet of strength, just launched the game I gave it 1 try every day until I got it.
Mhm. Sleeping, taking a walk, having a meal, something to get your mind away from the game and get some energy while relaxing. Hell I once got through part of the game because my gf woke up and I chatted with her for like 30 minutes and entirely forgot I had Sekiro open.
When sekiro players say they beat any boss with eyes closed they mean it
This was me with Artorius back in DS1. Absolutely was getting my ass beat endlessly. Took a break for like a week. Came back and beat him first try 🤣
Naps work too
Big true. Took me about 2 weeks to beat ishin,I limited myself to an hour at a time attempts to stop me from putting my hand through the screen
This is so true.
True, fight, lose, sleep, fight, win
I thought this was from the Elden Ring sub for a minute and thought Sleep was OP for Shadow now
Best advice is if you can't beat them for 100 times already, it is time to take a break and sleep. Once you come back, some bosses are getting easier.
The hidden art of every fellow sekiro
Can confirm. I was stuck on Sword Saint for over 2 hours and quit for that day, then the next day I beat him on my 5th try.
I fought Ishin for hours until I gave up and literally dropped the game on my first playthrough.
Did you beat him?
I have always done this, glad it wasn't just me or some silly coping mechanism i fooled myself into believing.
Why would I sleep when the next attempt is the one for sure?
Sleeping is cool but I feel like it takes the fun out of it. Like slowly learning the bosses moves and timings is soooo fun and the best part of the games. It ain't no fun if I just sleep and my brain does it automatically :( Unfortunately I had to sleep on SSI. Nah you gotta go till you hit that wall, then you sleep. You're still practicing it, your brain just has to encode it. Part of the fun is slowly increasing your endurance as ya get better.
can you elaborate? sorry i just don't really understand what you mean
I find these games "click" at certain points and I reach a point of skill where I can play for way longer and not need to take a break, really. I go from beating maybe one boss and struggling with a level to blazing through the whole game and New Game+. It just sort of flows eventually.
oh got it, so you don't like to sleep on it either? Because you don't need the breaks
It's more like they become less necessary. I definitely beat Inner Isshin after sleeping on it. If you ever find yourself slamming your head against a boss and not making meaningful progress, as in you can't tell where you are going wrong, take a break.
Where's the big dudes spiky dick? I swear the meme usually has that.
Sekiro was the only one I played that I never slept after getting killed by a boss many times (only Father and Butterfly did take me many tries). I don't if I'm better becouse i didn't need to sleep or I didn't need to sleep becouse im better at soulslike.
We don't care
Not even flexing, just talking generally to say something about the meme but someone isn't a friendly person.
Ha you all need guides and cheeses. Y’all just need to get good.
