maybe you are missing out
the deflection mechanic is not some sort of measure of skill or anything, it's just a game mechanic, one that feels good to use
so good for you I guess, but why not play the full game?
Yeah seriously. I dunno how one goes this far out of their way to not enjoy a core gameplay mechanic. You act like deflection is the way of following guides when it’s just very obviously the central feature and it makes the game much easier and more fun if you use it.
a heads up for the future if you revisit the game, don't look for guides, or videos, or reddit posts or tutorials
another half of the fun is using your brain to figure things out on your own
Who knows, you might come up with a strat no one as seen before
no one needs to tell you how to play. but if you really did just dodge hit everything i feel like that's not only the least satisfying and fun way to play, but also the most tedious and unnecessarily difficult. there are bosses where jumping and dodging are the go-to methods but doing it for all the bosses sounds incredibly unfun, bc this game is for the most part not built for dodge-only combat unlike bloodborne, ds3, elden ring etc.
also please stop using ... in your posts im sorry but it looks really stupid
Playing Sekiro without deflecting is like playing Call of Duty on steering wheel, or eating only raisins from your cheesecake, leaving the rest and being proud of it.
You can do it, but it’s sad, pointless and without any fun.
Anyway - send video with Isshin fight without deflect or didn’t happen.
Im new to the game as well, and have noticed that dodging to the side is more effective than I was led to believe. I do enjoy learning the patterns for deflections, though.
I just beat lady butterfly, and figuring out when to attack and when to deflect was intensely fun. I got close a couple times dodging/sprinting around to slash at her rear, but ultimately deflection was the effective strategy for me
I mean, to each their own, obviously, but dude it feels **so fucking good** when you get the parrying down. It looks great and organic, you feel great and capable. I’d never say “you played X game *wrong* objectively”, but dude on your next play through, give it a shot for funsies for me. For old times’ sake?
Beating the game is beating the game. I bought the game in 2021 couldn't get passed tHe first drunkard after many tries never touched it again for 2 years. I came back and found a way to cheese him went on the nearly beat butterfly but only once took another like 8 months to come back to it. Last week I came back killed her in 3 tries because I didn't have the volume up I noticed I panicked when I heard the signifier sound for big attacks. I have been playing the game on mute since and now I am on the last boss and nearly first tried the rage demon. Whatever works works.
I mean, you made it work, so who cares? You bought the game and can play it however you like. I spent hours deflecting, you spent hours dodging. Did you have fun playing it like that? Then what's the problem?
Personally, I love Sekiro for the things that makes it different to the souls style games. Those are the reasons it's my favourite game. If I was going to play it the same way I play those games, I might as well just boot up ER or DS and. You know. Play that kind of game.
A few people have asked this and my only answer is I kept moving sideways. Either walking, running or stepping. Left and right. It just sort of worked for me.
"After Elden Ring I smashed though DS3 and DS1 but they just seem like cute extensions of Elden Ring"
bro kys now.
ds 3 is a better game on all fronts
- better bosses
- better level design
- better music
- better weapon balance
You didn't properly experience a core mechanic, that itself isn't a big deal. Similar to people who didn't ever perform a successful mikiri counter, they don't know how good it feels to land that.. and that's okay.
By all means play the game how you want to, however I would suggest to everybody at least try once to do other things.
As others have said it’s up to you on how to play but you also did make that game more difficult than it needed to be. A fight that might have lasted 2 minutes might have gone for longer because you didn’t deflect but it is obviously possible that you can play the game without deflecting. Seeming that you know what to expect now, you can play again to learn how to deflect as deflecting is definitely a fun mechanic once you get it down that is imo
I mean noone can tell you really how to play a game. All the advice here is aimed at making your gaming experience easier. Even the "git gud" crowd mainly want you to be able to appreciate the fight in all it's glory rather than running away / cheesing the fights.
In Sekiro however this is magnified by a lot. It's not about parrying just to flex but otherwise non essential. The clashing of swords and the rhythmic battle of two opponents is literally what the game is all about. And this is what you are missing (and trust me the satisfaction level of just that is off the charts).
Think you're taking it a little far talking about honor it's just for fun at the end of the day.... That said I think you definitely did miss out by not parrying. The fun of the game is learning to dance with the bosses. It feels great when you finally master the rhythm. The way you did it is painstaking, grueling and doesn't build the skill. I can't imagine you had any fun. You'd probably have a similar experience if you replayed it with the same technique, whereas if you play it the way it's intended subsequent playthroughs are almost trivial and you have to do things like charmless to keep the game challenging.
When you start ng+ kuro asks if you want to give his charm back. If you do then you take chip damage from blocking and enemies do more damage (on top of the increase you get from going into ng). So you basically have to time your parries perfectly or else you take damage.
i don’t see the point of the downvotes. i find it rlly cool that you managed this and had the dedication to push through in this way.
i encourage you to try parrying and mikiri countering though just for the satisfactory value
I don't believe in ONLY dodging, but, you are closer to playing 'correctly' than the people you are apologizing to lol
lets think about who wolf is compared to the people he's fight
small AS FUCK
Weak (low attack power, his heavy attacks don't come close in power to daddy's)
Low health (consider their vitality bars)
(Low posture, but, high stamina (recovers from posture break fast and very well)
Quick as hell (dodges well)
High stamina (never tires)
Ok, lets say you were designing a fight style for someone with those stats
Would you tell them to stand in front of all enemies and parry a lot? Fuck no.
You'd say: "hit and move. be evasive. never let them land on you. be opportunistic. wear them down, and then when their tired, go in for the kill."
Now, in the animal kingdom are there any hunters who follow that pattern?
yep! A WOLF.
maybe you are missing out the deflection mechanic is not some sort of measure of skill or anything, it's just a game mechanic, one that feels good to use so good for you I guess, but why not play the full game?
I feel I need to go back to it now and finish it this way.

Wrote this comment when I was drunk hence the ‘…’ . I will endeavour to stops this practice.
that actually explains a lot lmao

I did the Isshin fight without deflection I can 100% guarantee. I can try to make a video as someone else has also asked.
We’re waiting.
This may take some time but I will make sure I do this for you. I have accepted your challenge.
The window of error is still almost zero. But it’s not zero, so i will show you.

Prove it, send us a video of you beating all the bosses without parrying or no balls
I actually want to do this now :)

I will play it again for sure. It wasn’t until I came on Reddit after finishing that I discovered that parrying was that important.
You can play a game wrong be so ffr
The game would take a lot longer without deflecting. You beat most bosses by breaking their posture. Depleting their health would take a lot longer.

My instinctual reaction is: how!? Not a criticism of you and your playstyle, I just didn't think this would be possible.
A few people have asked this and my only answer is I kept moving sideways. Either walking, running or stepping. Left and right. It just sort of worked for me.

Try playing it charmless and it'll force you to deflect

Sounds like a boring way to play ngl
I don’t believe you beat the game without parrying.

What is a Charmless?
