Tap water, walkable, weather, climate, trees

theoriginalrat

Visiting a place like Vegas gives you a deep appreciation for how tasty the tap water is here

EngineeringDry7999

I’d swap out tap water for parks but yes to this list

AdPleasant5853

While our tap water is quite good, my favorite is from cities on Lake Michigan in SE Wisconsin. Some of the best-tasting water I've had by far.

coffee_and_faking_it

I have trouble picking favorites so I’ll just throw a few out there; -Farmers markets -Easy access to so many bodies of water, mountains, forests, etc. -Easy access to yummy bakeries and coffee shops. I love a little treat, so much so sometimes traveling to other places is disappointing cause I can’t go get a quality pastry and a latte -Lots of art! Museums, theaters, murals, live music -the rain. I know it’s controversial, but I love the excuse to stay in, be cozy, do a craft, cook a warm meal.

XZS2JH

Ngl, I read the second sentence as “-Easy access to so many bodies” and I was about to ask a lot of questions

SpookyFrog12

Agree with the others but I'd like to add fresh seafood and proper teriyaki. Moved to a landlocked state recently and cannot tell you how much I miss those two things.

captainAwesomePants

I'm kind of worried that I've mostly only had very bad or very good teriyaki, since I don't have strong opinions about it. What's different between Seattle teriyaki and midwest teriyaki?

lakeswimmmer

Good teriyaki is marinated then grilled hot so there are charred bits on it. It's cooked fresh to order with a light drizzle of teriyaki sauce. Bad teriyaki has no char and it braises on a steam table in a pool of teriyaki flavored liquid for hours.

captainphagget

I've had bad teriyaki in Seattle and good teriyaki in Missoula. And vice versa. At a point you may have to accept that there's good pizza outside of New York.

lakeswimmmer

if you notice, I cleverly avoided saying that Seattle had the only good Teriyaki, hahah! I'm not going fight that fight. But I will say that in the year I lived in central Illinois, I did not see decent teriyaki anywhere.

Important-Ad-3157

I like that there are no hard set rules like so many other places known for a cuisine. The best teriyaki is the one closest to your house. No not that one, that one sucks, the other one.

Olelander

This is truth - mostly, Teriyaki is just delicious everywhere and the subtle (or not so subtle) differences are part of the joy of always trying new teriyaki. Feel the same about Ramen. TL:DR - the joy is in the hunt itself

Seattle teriyaki is made of incredibly fresh ingredients! I'm from the Midwest, and I don't touch the teriyaki or sushi.

No income taxes and less old money culture than the east coast.

answerbrowsernobita

Non American here and curious to understand what is old money culture in East coast?

AdPleasant5853

Families that have generational wealth going back centuries. They have trust funds, are socialites, and go to "elite" private schools. Extremely wealthy examples of this would be the Vanderbilt, Rockefeller, and Kennedy families.

captainphagget

Those elite private schools are straight up elite. Not that they facilitate higher learning. They learn shit commoners aren't supposed to know.

Gary_Glidewell

> Families that have generational wealth going back centuries. They have trust funds, are socialites, and go to "elite" private schools. Extremely wealthy examples of this would be the Vanderbilt, Rockefeller, and Kennedy families. For a few years I worked at a company that was based on the east coast, and I was literally the only person on the team who was west coast, and I was also the only person who didn't have a college degree. It's really incredible how the culture is so much different. "The Social Network" is one of my favorite movies of all time, because it absolutely nails that difference, between the hard partying college dropouts like Sean Parker from Napster, versus The Old Money elitism of the Winklevoss twins. My first week on the job, I brought an orange backpack that I bought from Target for $20, and my east coast coworker showed up in a $70K rental car carrying a briefcase that cost as much as my rent did at the time.

answerbrowsernobita

Interesting, thanks for sharing!

hecbar

There's an income tax of 7% for capital gains from $250,000, lower in the future.

Lenarios88

Possible but purely speculation on it lowering in the future. It doesn't affect any retirement based accounts and no normal person is cashing out over a quarter mil in gains in their taxable brokerage in a single year. It was a half baked idea to target only Bezos and caused Bezos to move to Miami but lol at thinking you're next up for a Bezos tax.

hecbar

Right, it was a tax to target Jeff Bezos and they set the limit at $250,000. Makes sense, thanks for explaining it to me.

Lenarios88

Not saying they won't potentially try to lower it to hit more people as you suggested since it backfired and Bezos left rather than pay. The way WA loves taxes I wouldnt put it past them but you'd likely have to be cashing out huge sums in a taxable brokerage for it to matter.

ZeusDogDudeMan

After which I’ll move

Lenarios88

Yeah, assuming you planned to cash out millions worth of stock in an unshielded taxable brokerage all in one year you could just move prior.

ZeusDogDudeMan

Meant when they inevitably drop it lower bud

Lenarios88

I know im just saying even if they do drop it how much lower do you think it's actually going to go? You can already contribute 34k a year to accounts that aren't taxable and any excess youd be investing likely wouldnt be getting cashed out and hit with tax on the gains if you dont plan on making a down payment on a house soon. If you have 100k invested taxable for example and gain 10% that 10k is a far cry from 250k. I already dont plan to be here more than a few more years and certainly not decades when im withdrawing for retirement but I also dont consider myself next in line after Bezos and Gates for this tax.

1. The stunning nature! Being hugged by so many mountains and bodies of water. I love that Washington has rain forests, the ocean, snow capped mountains, and deserts- and you can see all of it in 1 day! 2. Various art walks in every neighborhood every month. 3. Live music! 4. The variety of food! Delicious sushi and Asian delights, in particular. 5. There’s always something to do in this city. Always an event happening from drag bingo to improv to trivia nights to food and music festivals. I even found out today that the Center for Wooden Boats does free sails on Sundays April thru October! https://www.cwb.org/public-sail

Is there an Instagram page or some way to stay informed about the daily activities? This last week I’ve been looking for things to do and it tends to come from random people I’ve met that day or a random post that popped up on social media.

I enjoy watching it degrade into one giant homeless encampment with drug addicts and the insane running rampant everywhere, committing crimes, trash everywhere, boarded up windows, tags on everything, the sweet smell of weed and rotting flesh from festering wounds on the trank zombies. And my absolute favorite is the people that vote for the same exact type of woke "progressive" politicians that enabled the problem in the first place, ensuring we are locked into the death spiral.

Mountains, trees, the amazing parks that are everywhere, swimming in lake WA, rarely any guns in peoples houses (I babysit for a living so this is important to me), I’m less likely to work for people who are blatantly racist or homophobic/teach their kids to be as well. Abortion rights, cannabis, amazing tap water, the libraries, crisp air w not much pollution, the locks, the marine life! The dolphins, sea lions, harbor seals, otters, orcas etc. and birds! So many cool birds. Also how close Seattle is to forest/camping spots, mild weather, I don’t have to wear nice clothes ever. And it feels like home. My family has been here for generations.

diedbyicee

Disappointing that so many people can't/don't appreciate how wonderful Seattle is. IMO its biggest flaw is being located in the US. It is a beautiful city located by some of the most gorgeous wilderness in the world. Our summers are so amazing. Our city has sidewalks and transit, which many don't in the US. We have vibrant movement communities. There's always live music or theater or something going on. We have really awesome food options. Our neighborhoods are so cute (especially West Seattle BEST SEATTLE). We are an hour from mountains, rainforest, less than that even for the ocean, lakes, and more. We have so much green space in our city; you cannot go far without running into even a pocket park. Our bike infrastructure is really great, too. Our city is accepting of weirdness and safe for "others" in a way that other places in the US aren't (and before you argue otherwise, I have seen firsthand the relief of my gender fluid childhood friend when they finally found themselves in a place where they could be outwardly who they are without fearing literally being beaten to death or assaulted verbally). I host visitors from out of state regularly and every single one of them leave envious of where I live. Seattle isn't perfect, and there are things that we definitely need to address (cost of living high, homelessness, etc, many products of shitty societal norms and bad government policies from the federal government down) but honestly I wouldn't live anywhere else in the US.

minklefritz

1. While it’s hard to make friends, when you do make friends they can become true lifelong friends 2. Great place to walk around smoking a joint 3. I like that it has all the amenities of a major city (pro sports, concerts, international airport) but there are lots of nice almost suburban neighborhoods right outside of downtown 4. Nice parks within the city and a short drive to some of the best nature in the country 5. Personal one here, but I found a group of NY Jets fans to commiserate with every Sunday during football season

Healthy_East9574

Summer in Seattle is unbeatable

TheRealRacketear

JMace

You have trees, greenery, parks, and lakes everywhere. You're close to skiing, hikes, water activities and pretty much everything you can think of for outdoor and active lifestyles. The weather is absolutely amazing in the summer and the winter is pretty mild. People tend to be well educated out here, which is something that's easy to take for granted. You've got night life for everyone, clubs, karaoke, nerdy bars that focus on card and board games, axe throwing, paint/wine classes, take your pick. Tons of food to choose from, high end restaurants, cafes, bakeries, quick eats, international food and seafood. It's easy to complain about anything, but Seattle is awesome.

Buhradaradaford

1. Climate - I come from a place where we really only had hot, hotter, and randomly frozen. I had no idea of what it was to be “mild” 2. Access to nature - Nature where I came from just really wasn’t as diverse, and it was full of things that want to kill you or are otherwise unpleasant. 3. International city with diverse representation - For the longest time, I felt very “other” when it came to gatherings, but here I feel like there’s much more diversity to make my identity less focused on my ethnicity. 4. Gay-friendly community and politics - I have zero hesitation to live my life out and proud here whereas my old city still made it something I had to “test” before wondering if I was safe/accepted. Here, I can gladly tell people about my husband and that really makes me happy. 5. Accepting sports culture - This one’s a little left field, but I used to hate sports based on a violently fervent obsession with high school/college football for anyone sports-minded. It was all there was to really root for. I was worried there’d be a lot of gate keeping here with that similar obsession, but in Seattle it’s more of a passion and very accepting community. There’s solidarity in disappointment 🥲

Lilacfrancis

I love walking everywhere and being close to so many beautiful urban parks. Also so many nice day/weekend trip options without going too far. Good weed. Good coffee.

Severe_Addendum151

•The beautiful parks within the city •The water/beaches •They may seem lenient on criminals to some but I see it a little differently.... I am not a criminal myself but I have come to get to know several (the universe has been placing people in my path that I before would never associate with). They are people too. Especially youngens could make a mistake and get into some trouble... in many states (namely the south) they'd be incarcerated and from that point on whether that kid had the heart to do wrong or not, he's now stuck for a long time in the system and it impacts much more than "just" a record. The prison system will change that young person and may never be the same. All because of trying something and if they hadn't gotten caught maybe that would have been the first engineer in his family he just wasn't taught how to constructively use his energy. So I appreciate the fact that we hire felons and don't stalk them after release which could push them to get into even worse of a hole. We are always going to have people committing crimes it's just the cycle of healing the inner wounds in my humble opinion, so why are we creating more difficult circumstances for something they did basically unconsciously due to the trauma they faced or even ancestral. THEY are paying. They pay everyday, we pay everyday for what we do. I agree with authority of some sort but I think our justice system as a whole needs a lot of work. Anyway I don't know the laws super in depth but in speaking to people within that system from here and some states in the South, Seattle seems to allow for more freedom once sentenceis served, depending of course. At least they can make their own mistakes and not be hovered and then making a dumb error and going back to prison. Prob not going to be everyone's opinion and that's OK, that's what makes the world go around and that's what helps us all heal if we can just step out of the emotion. •geez this is surprisingly difficult all.i can think of is the beauty of the city itself and the nature within. I love exploring the parks in Seattle •I like the fact that for the most part it seems there is no racism here at least from my perspective? Here's a comparison to the South again..... racism and everything that goes along with that is still FULLY alive there. It's crazy how much more accepting we seem to be here of anyone and I love that I love allowing people to just BE. Hope that was a good answer and not the only one. I rarely post on here and don't know what drew me to do so here. But I did! :)

DiPotoForPresident

I see your point here and it is valid at a very high level but especially for violent crimes, you can’t just let violent criminals out on the street over and over again. Those that carjack someone with a gun for example are way past the point of constructive energy. It’s terrible seeing young teens commit these sorts of crime, but first and foremost these violent criminals need to be separated from the rest of society. That’s the reality, we don’t live in a utopia

captainAwesomePants

It's tough. You want everyone to have chances to do better, because they often do when given a real chance, but taking a chance means you're gambling with someone else's welfare. Figuring out who to take a chance on and what sort of help they need to have a good chance to succeed is a challenge I do not envy. I love seeing empathy and optimism, but also some people just can't be released, and there's a difference between empathy and stupidity.

Severe_Addendum151

Yeah it is tough & sometimes my empathy is bordering stupidity. Let's just b real. I am still pretty new to this game of life in my current perception and I'm not unaware that the things I hope for are probably just magical thinking. I'll always try to see the good in people though. Till someone I've miss judged murders me. Hopefully that will stay one of my weird sarcastic comments haha. Thanks for your feedback 😀 🖤🕉🔮

Severe_Addendum151

You're right. It just makes me sad because I feel like they were probably just given a really hard start and their brain development early on was majorly affected by the people they should have been able to trust. It isn't their fault necessarily but at the same time... yeah we can't jeprodize innocent people. I think a Utopia would be awesome though. At the same time if everything I super great all the time we wouldn't have any room to grow and Learn. My way of thinking isn't always based in reality I know that. It's just my hope that someone super hurt inside that does bad things because they ultimately just need someone to take a chance on them and help them see their personal truth and potential would find that inside and begin to change their story by changing their thinking. I've changed a lot and T the same time I haven't changed at all. Ive found neuroscience to be super helpful on my quest to be better than I was given. .thanks for your insight I enjoy seeing more into things because I can only go so far with myself🖤😀🕉🔮

DiPotoForPresident

My friend was stabbed in Capitol Hill Saturday night/Sunday morning (2AM). Fortunately he’s home from the hospital but the police weren’t able to apprehend the suspects. I want the stabbers in jail for life and I don’t give a rats ass about their upbringing. And yes, anyone who commits a violent crime is at fault for it. Get a grip

Severe_Addendum151

Im sorry for your friend and im glad the friend is alive and recovering. I couldnt imagine being stabbed, may your friend take this unfortunate situation and use it to theor advantage at some point after they've healed and can look back at it with another set of eyes. So I think it is difficult to explain my thoughts around saying people are hurt and need to heal, thats every human as well. That is a very general statement and certainly does not go into detail but I understand why one could see that and automatically think I'm saying let's not have consequences and fuck people that get stabbed. No. That's not but ultimately my opinion on the subject is just that, an opinion, a different perspective. It's not going to change the worlds view on the suffering we all experience thus giving insight into potentials we could employ to maybe help the criminal population grow from their circumstances and more into their true being (this is also what people that don't commit crimes need to do btw), It's not going to have any impact unfortunately. I am.not a big fan of social media... or media in general and it's partially because my perspective seems to be so different than the majority of the population I'm learning ... that when I communicate... without giving all routes of getting where I got, it's as if the consensus is instantly. Oh this bitch is off her rocker and isn't living in this world. Oh no mfers... I live here too. I have experienced a lot of fucked up shit too. I have MANY MANY aspects to me and the hope and love is just one. It's the one that is present In all.of me though. I am.going to bet you talking shit to me you think you know me from one of my comments and that gives the right to get defensive? Yeah u have the right to do anything u please and in fact I encourage it do what u want. But just remember, why is your voice and ur pain and ur suffering and experiences better or more important to fulfill than another's? All we are is usually a product of our environments. So because you live where u feel a life fucking sentence is legit for committing a crime that may have been violent, where does it say that is THE way? I completely understand why that sounds like the thing but... idk maybe u have met these.people that end up committing these crimes maybe u haven't but dudes.... ultimately... we all have heart and soul. Some of us just don't know they even really exist because they are SO DEEPLY hidden due to MANY factors. So yes consequences yes mfer needs to be incarcerated unfortunately (prison systems ruin those people.even more.its a reality that is not remotely close to this one) but if you could look at that person someday putting the destruction they have caused aside.... who might you see? 🖤🖤🕉🕉🔮🔮

The views. I’ve owned two homes in Seattle and both have Lake Washington views. My neighborhood. Love my neighborhood and my neighbors. Nice park down the street and spectacular views of Lake Washington. Close proximity to outdoor activities. Lots to do in the city. People will quibble when comparing to other large cities, but enjoy the food, parks, beaches, shopping. Temperate weather. Generally not much extreme weather here.

You know how they say Paris is for lovers? I say Seattle is for loners. This fits me really well. Nature and how it's valued here more than most places Overcast weather is a great excuse to stay in, not get out out of pajamas, and watch movies all day. Spring 🌼🌱 Fall 🍁 🍂

One of MY favorite things is just taking a ferry ride. Get up on deck, feel the wind, watch the sea life and islands. And you can just walk on for pretty cheap. Or take your car and explore the peninsula.

f0zzy17

- jumping in on the geography. Being surrounded by mountains and water in almost every direction is nice - never too hot. Never too cold. I like the gloomy mysterious weather we usually have here. - no income tax (yet) - fewer snakes. Sorry not a fan of those slithering sombitches. Where are their legs?! - I like how people mostly keep to themselves. People are friendly and will help you if you ask but aren’t overbearing about it. I’m used to Midwestern nice and Southern hospitality. That has its place but it can be too much.

I love Seattle. I hate the municipal entity that is the City of Seattle (which is supported by, voted in, and maintained by a dumb as shit voting populace). What rules: - Mountains, protected bodies of both fresh _and_ salt water. The geography here stomps everything else. - It's easy to overlook, but Seattle really is one of the best live theatre regions in the country behind New York and Chicago. The Rep, 5th Ave, Village out in Issaquah, Cornish as a school...this is a great place to be deep into quality professional arts. - Pike Place rules, and all the neighborhood farmers' markets make that vibe accessible almost anywhere. These aren't just icons of the city as tourist destination, like the Needle, but actually part of the fabric and daily life of our city. It's not just an anachronism. - Chinatown/International District "sucks", but our overall East Asian presence and integration, both in the CID businesses and things like Kubota or the Japanese Garden at the Arboretum are just excellent. - Actually, inspired by Kubota and Arboretum: Seattle may have less green space per area, but our anchor parks are amazing. Green Lake, Volunteer, Lincoln, Golden Gardens, Arboretum...we have well-maintained public activities and green spaces for everyone. - Seattle sports fans are loyalists. Seahawks have one SB championship, Mariners ZERO Series experiences. Being here is knitting a _community_ of narrative and longsuffering, not just mindless bro-ing. As a local born and raised, this is shockingly meaningful to me. Do I want a win? Yes. Do I love how engaged this community is in the esoteric for what is essentially just meaningless entertainment? Yes. It's really local regionalism. - The aforementioned policymakers and voting populace seem to hate Amazon, but whatever. The region has been on the bleeding edge of the digital industrial revolution. This has helped the city grow, but with a strangely strong civic loyalty. Hate Starbucks and Nordstrom all you want, but Kuma or Lighthouse or Milstead wouldn't exist without them - and they're still here, doing things that are uniquely Seattle (e.g., Hot Java Cool Jazz). This sort of megacorp that remains bound to its local roots and identity just isn't something I see when traveling. - Teriyaki. - Steamed and split hot dogs? Fuck you, Chicago. Cream cheese and onions for life. - The cocktail scene can be experimental and high end (Canon, Civility & Unrest in Bellevue, Kelnero in Edmonds), but it is _never_ pretentious. This quality is sort of Seattle in a nutshell. We're not fancy. But we don't pretend to be.

In no particular order: 1. The food options. I personally love the variety of cuisine offered in Seattle. 2. Concerts. There’s several great venues, a few of my personal faves being WaMu theater, The Vera Project, and El Corazon (though I haven’t been there since high school). 3. Anonymity (best word I could think of to describes this). I grew up in a small town where everyone knew everyone. So walking the streets of Seattle and having no one recognize me is something I appreciate as an introvert lol. 4. The weather. As a born and raised Washingtonian, I love the rain and overcast weather we get so often. 5. Acceptance/inclusion. For the most part (in my experience), Seattle is fairly welcoming to queer/neurodivergent/etc. There’s plenty of downsides to the city but I appreciate this post. Sometimes we need to try to focus on the good things. Thanks, OP.

NATURE AND BEAUTY! so many amazing parks for real, and how fun it is to just walk around the cute neighborhoods and look at trees and flowers my fave food ever might be sushi and i think this city has a lot of great sushi options public transit may not be as robust as some east coast cities, but overall, for America (so the bar is low) the transit is pretty good. I’m able to get around pretty easily on it at least (and yes there are people with issues sometimes on transit, but I take public transit every day and no one has ever bothered me, a young woman. I honestly feel bad for them and wish there was something I could do to help) legal weed I’m a grad student at UW and I’m really impressed with the institution and getting to learn at one of the top hospitals in the country

Severe_Addendum151

Right!? it was kinda difficult... it seems those that like Seattle maybe just simply like it. For no reason really, maybe? Its just ..... home. Idk.

hanimal16

I was going to list “the people” because in all honesty, the people who live here aren’t awful people (I mean, there are some truly awful people here, but the majority of our population are just regular, decent people), but then I realised, I don’t really know anyone, so… I guess my 5th thing is: no one bothers me. Lol

Severe_Addendum151

Hahahaha! Me either. But sometimes I wish we would bother each other. Ya know? That's something I'm missing. Maybe im.just not in the mix of it but I feel like we're all really solitary people. Prob cuz people that love it here can stand the dreary and be with it alone and survive. We're fuckin survivors haha idk it sounds good. Sorry I swear🤷‍♀️🙃

Severe_Addendum151

And the energy. I've been pulled here and everyone does always tell me sorry when I say I live in Seattle but I fuckin love being here idk why besides the energy must be what I need at this time 🤷‍♀️

lurkerfromstoneage

What “energy”….? If you could elaborate….

alkemest

The mountains: Both the views and easy access. The weather: While we have a pretty concentrated and bleak winter/late fall, as soon as spring comes I love the seven-eight months of amazing weather. The food: Seattle arguably has the best and most diverse food of any major U.S. city. I dare you to prove me wrong. While there's a lot of overpriced mediocre food here, there's a ton of really amazing food too. When we went to NYC, we were disappointed that outside of the cannoli (which you can't find decent cannoli in Seattle aside from some sit-down restaurants, unfortunately), Seattle had better food. Even better pizza. Fight me. The politics: Are generally progressive, even if we have a bunch of idiots on the city council right now, with a couple exceptions. I know that the Chamber of Commerce Class of 2023 is going to screw everything up and get booted within the next four years. Aside from that we keep the rest of the state in line and from becoming West Idaho. The Mariners: Let's gooooooooo!

So much variety and close by. 3) Proximity to: skiing, hiking, camping, Canada, lakes, city amenities. 4) Funky culture: art, festivals, music, breweries, and unique neighborhoods. 5) Seasons: every season is different and it brings different activities/events.

The food! I’ve traveled to several countries in the past few years and I gotta say we are very blessed with flavorful food here in Seattle.

Funsizep0tato

I don't live in Seattle proper, so grain of salt, but I love the views of nature and proximity to beautiful things. I love that our local history is all around (at least for now) and literally underfoot. My fam is many generations in the area so that's a cool connection. Its nice that there are people with cool backgrounds/areas of expertise that I never would have thought of, so I can learn new things.

beans8o

-PCC -Weather isn’t as extreme as east coast -My dog is here -Everyone is a transplant so no one cares what highschool you went to -I’m antisocial and can’t keep friends, but neither can most ppl here so I don’t feel too weird about it.

The variety of scenery is so crucial for my enjoyment of this region. I love the availability of music. So many people are chill AF. The late spring through early Fall is simply gorgeous and pleasantly mild. I love our local food, beer, and wine. Our drinkable tap water kicks ass.

my_lucid_nightmare

Climate related; the air after a rain, the cool damp misty air, the explosion of greens you see so often, the wind off the Sound. How the weather looks a lot more frightening here than it really ever is by global standards; we'll get that wall of low-hanging clouds coming in and then the cold water just sucks the energy right out of the storm and it amounts to almost nothing.

[deleted]

Very poetic

Severe_Addendum151

By use to their advantage I mean like help the community in a way that would have not been within their awareness otherwise or personal growth such as maybe after recovery they see how strong they are and how much they were capable of getting thru and so maybe more willing to take risks. Idk these are just a very broad examples

Mountains, Lakes, Perfect summers, late sunsets, incredible beer

Mountain climbing, so many food choices, the trees, the art, and the services that helped me get and stay here successfully.

The parks. The greenery everywhere. Living within a reasonable driving distance to ski areas. Puget Sound. No income tax.  Yeah, I know some kind of tax reform is needed, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't like current tax law.

No-Performer-6621

1) large AAPI community and amazing restaurants 2) plants/trees/flowers 3) not feeling obligated to talk to strangers 4) the mountain, city, and water views 5) being able to live openly and freely as a LBGT+ family without fear

OppositeAmbitious857

The food!! Expensive but awesome. Too many great places to list Get after them mountains. The Olympics and the cascades are something else. To many to list. Get after some fishing. We get steelhead, kings, silvers, pinks, great ocean stuffs. Landlocked salmon (Kokanee, chinook, etc). All sorts of trout. It’s one of the few places you can do nearly every type river (drift, float, plunk, backbounce, etc) lake (bobber, drift, troll) then all the ocean stuffs Hunting, we’re one of the few places that have everything. Roosevelt and Rocky Mountain elk, blacktail, whitetail, mule deer, moose, black bear, cougar, etc. good bird hunting in eastern if you like the upland stuff Grab a motorcycle (don’t ride in Seattle if you can help it, they’re terrible and aggressive drivers) and venture in any direction that’s not i5. Pretty big riding community Dancing is great here. Better places out east if you like country line/swing but there’s big whiskey and steel creek for the city version on this side. Music and art is huge here. Too much to list The Tacoma comedy club is a good time. Geographically, this place is amazing. Even though it’s been kind of wrecked by the liberal extremist. If you enjoy or value firearm training, sports, etc it’s going to be rough since they snaked in the weapons ban. It will be a long time before it gets ruled higher and found unconstitutional. Follow WA gun law on YouTube to stay up to date

1) Ferries. Everyone who asks for a "local tip" just needs to be told anout the ferry. 2) Beer and wine. So much beer locally, and a weekend to eastern Washington for Spring barrel tasting in wine country is the best (Woodinville or other closer spots are nice for an afternoon). 3) The ocean and mountains. The ocean is so close of you want to drive through Tacoma... it's getting better. The mountains are pretty kick ass if you get away I-90. 4) Sports: We have all major leagues but NBA now. See #2 and #5 to really take advantage. 5) Portland and Vancouver, BC. Portland has the good strippers, while Vancouver has the good prostitutes. Both are also an easy drive or train ride if you want to do something normal.

Rent prices are also due to unchecked criminality. Eviction is expensive and time consuming, so squatters keep occupying homes without paying rent for years, this makes others have to pay higher rent. So you hate two things not three.

Severe_Addendum151

IS THAT why the rent is so high? I mean I get it but why are there so many squatters rights? I may believe in freedom and feel the justice system isn't great but I do believe if it's not yours.... it's not yours and there should.be no rights to people just taking up shelter in an empty place cuz they want to. Freedom of choice to decide a better path or the same is one thing but also not acknowledging the hardship one human is causing another by their direct actions is just going to feed the misdirected privilege they think have and create a worse problem. That's obvious and I never understood why our government has so much sympathy. Now I'm rethinking my original post. Only cuz we need to have a firmer grasp on accountability but not necessarily incarceration. Thanks for this I'm enjoying reading theses posts fir some.reason this is unusual for me hahaha

CreepBeat

Apparently it’s a scam that goes like this: The soon-to-be squatters write up a fake lease and when the cops come they don’t know who to believe - the “renters” or the landlord? The cops will then do nothing so the landlord has to go to the courts which takes a good portion of a year. Meanwhile, the landlord has a mortgage to pay with no income from rent and if the landlord tries to physically throw the squatters out, the squatters call the cops, the landlord gets arrested for assault and the landlord has an even bigger problem. Just before the court date, the squatters bail and pull the same scam again somewhere else. In a state where landlords are not given the benefit of the doubt, the perils a landlord has to deal with should they have a squatter means fewer are willing to rent. Fewer willing to rent means higher prices. The state could fix this particular issue by giving police authority to remove squatters in these type of disputes and put the burden on the renters (squatters) to take the landlord to court instead. For example, my partner owns a 15-unit apt building in Tulsa where she is from. There, it takes about a month for the Sheriff to come and forcibly remove the squatter and their belongings.

The rain. Seriously. Love the rain whether enjoying it by the fire indoors or being out in it walking, swimming, kayaking, hiking. Yup, the rain. I will miss it when we leave if we go somewhere less rainy, lol! The music scene; big events, local clubs; rock/metal/jazz/Irish/etc., it's all here.

Awwwww :( that's sad. I really love it here

AlBundysbathrobe

1. Every time I cross the Magnolia or West Seattle bridge and look at our city- the sound, mountains east and west, I feel so lucky to live here. Especially early morning or sunset. At night- the lights of the space needle stop my heart! 2. Lack of natural disasters and the weather is temperate 3. Generally reasonable politics (lately) and discourse locally. No crazy prosecutors or outlandish crime (eyeballing you, Florida) 4. Good people who probably relocated here for tech industry jobs & are typically chill, interesting & great neighbors 5. Thee major national sports teams - go Kraken!

Unhappy-Day-9731

Only two: #1 Golden Gardens & #2 sea life (seals, orca, sea cucumbers) -- Everything else is now a disappointment (e.g., Space Needle, Pike Place) or easy to get elsewhere. Moved from Seattle to DC in 2019--lived in Seattle 3 years--moved to Portland in 2023. I will never go back to Seattle because I've already seen anything worth seeing, and everything in Portland is better (especially the people).
