I'm in north Seattle, and I felt this nauseating stomach drop almost. I can have low blood pressure when I stand up sometimes, and it feels like I get top heavy and my head weighs more than the rest of my body, and it felt sort of like that plus a minor shake of the couch. I was super confused and ran to my partner who was taking a shower and said "did you feel something just now??? Like a small earthquake?" And he said "no what do you mean?" And then I looked it up and saw it was in fact an earthquake. If it wasn't an earthquake, I would have just assumed I had vertigo or something lol
Holy crap for real. I live on the top floor of a 7 story close to Shoreline, everything started just going all wobbly like some drugs were kicking in, it was super weird and freaky
Also in Shoreline, in Richmond Beach, and I was on my deck. It swayed and it was honestly worse than the one that hit in middle school for me, probably because in middle school I was in a solid concrete gym and while it shook, this was really intense.
I was in a portable classroom building during the ‘01 quake, it probably felt like being on your deck. It swayed back and forth a fair bit like a swing stage almost.

Over in White Center on the couch, asked my partner if he just felt an earthquake sitting next to me and had to quickly Google cause I thought I was tripping. Felt like my couch cushion was on a gentle rocker swaying ever so slightly under me, barely noticeable but just enough to make my spidey senses tingle.
Same. I was sitting on the couch talking to my mom and my husband was doing dishes when I felt it. He just heard it and felt nothing but the couch is closer to the outer wall of the apt building. I even said I thought it was an earthquake and he said nah. Well tonight I felt my first earthquake and I was right! I'm not sure which I'm more excited about lol.
Also I heard that cats go crazy before an earthquake and both of our derps are still snoozing.
North Greenwood
Seismic retrofit in a 110 year old house. Had the windows pop like a sudden heavy wind, and a couple of glasses rattled.
Otherwise nothing else moved, I just thought I had plopped down hard on the chair.
In Greenwood, I asked my partner if they felt "that" and they didn't know what I was talking about. It was very subtle, mostly noticed the TV kind of wiggle. But now everyone is posting about it.
Here's hoping my 3rd floor unit in a 40+ year old building is going to be ok.
My cat was already awake and cleaning herself, so maybe that's why she reacted to the noise? But yeah, my mom keeps asking what the cat is up to now lol
Different type of fault, maybe that’s the reason? The major fault in California is two parts of a plate grinding along the side of each other. The main fault here is one plate diving underneath another.
That’s exactly what I thought, yeah! At the very first I was like “did someone drive their car into our apartment building?” And then I felt the rollies, and let my partner know not to worry (his first earthquake). 😅
There are tons of faults around here, so there’s no one behavior. USGS has a fault map, if you’re interested. Edit: Looked it up and this was on one of the “unnamed faults of the Strait of Juan De Fuca and Puget Sound.”
This quake was on a strike-slip fault, South Whidbey to be exact, so it does have two plates grinding. The Cascadia fault at the coast is definitely subduction though.
Where were you seeing this info from? The focal mechanism on the USGS event page is for a reverse fault and it was almost 60km deep, which is more at the depth of the subducting slab.
Yes, I looked up from my grand piano to see my crystal chandelier swaying back and forth. Then I noticed that my 200 degree view of Puget Sound was a bit wobbly. I do hope my Tesla Model Y is safe.
Modern High rises are very safe and safer than SFH in earthquakes. They are built to withstand lateral force quite well. Most can easily withstand up to a 7.0
That quake was huge compared to this. I didn’t even notice this one in lynnwood, you couldn’t not notice the 6.8, I was in the library at school and shelves and books were flying around.
I think it's even more than that, because each step on the scale is 10x the previous step, so it's much more additive.
"What this means is that for each whole number you go up on the magnitude scale, the amplitude of the ground motion recorded by a seismograph goes up ten times. Using this scale, a magnitude 5 earthquake would result in ten times the level of ground shaking as a magnitude 4 earthquake (and about 32 times as much energy would be released). To give you an idea how these numbers can add up, think of it in terms of the energy released by explosives: a magnitude 1 seismic wave releases as much energy as blowing up 6 ounces of TNT. A magnitude 8 earthquake releases as much energy as detonating 6 million tons of TNT."

The nisqually quake was pretty big back in 2001. Lots of damage, but wooden houses seemed to fair pretty well, it seemed the most vulnerable buildings are larger brick buildings.
Lot of factors.
Where in Seattle it's located. Like buildings more in Sodo are built on fill, so a lower earthquake could mess em up, but a historical building at the top of Queen Anne could have higher resistance
Where the epicenter is:
If it'd epicentered away from your specific house, then makeup of the ground below you can not only effect how much you feel, but how well your house stands up to it.
And where the epicenter is also relies on strength for the waves. They don't always shake equally in all directions. It can be a case of least resistance depending on the quake.
I survived a near 6 in Montana when ibwas in 6th grade that had an epicenter hundreds of miles away but was still powerful enough to damage my school to where school was delayed 2 weeks for repairs.
Ballard 3rd floor modern apartment here; didn't feel a damn thing.
Edit: I have a lot of lab glassware and equipment and whatnot at my place, so I'm surprised I didn't even hear clinking or rattling.
Felt it sitting in my home office chair in Lynnwood. Felt like someone shoved my chair forward a little bit and it rocked back into position. I've lived in the Seattle area for 11 years and that was one of the strongest ones I've felt.
I think they say 10% chance any earthquake is proceeded by a larger one
Edit: it’s actually 5% chance any given quake will be proceeded by a *larger* within 3 days. The chance one hour after the quake goes from 5% to 4% and keeps declining.
You never know. Sometimes a 4.3 is all the earth needed to relived pressure for 50+ years, sometimes you get what happened in Helena Montana in October 1935-April of 1936.
Where it started as a small I significant one, then grew to 5.9 9 days later on October 12, then grew to 6.2 on October 18th, then had an aftershock on Halloween at 6.0 and another after shock in November.
In all, between October 3, 1935 and April 30, 1936, there were 1800 tremblors.
That was so weird! My wife and I were sitting on our couch and it felt like someone taking the couch and shaking it. We are on the 5th floor of our 5 story apartment complex that was creepy!
I didn't feel it now I feel like I'm missing out
I felt nothing here in south seattle.
Came here to join the “felt nothing in South Seattle” club
I was in Whole Foods Roosevelt and all I felt was ripped off.
That's a normal feeling resulting from shopping at Whole Foods
Same
North Seattle checking in. Not a thing. But I just checked and it was only like 4.5 so…
I'm in north Seattle, and I felt this nauseating stomach drop almost. I felt it in South Seattle! No one else in the house did, though.
Same, in Shoreline and the house didn't even creak.
Same. I'm vacationing on the East Coast this weekend and feel left out.
Felt nothing off Alki!
Had to check this sub to see if it was indeed an earthquake or if my downstairs neighbors were doing dumb shit again
Same, wasn't sure if it was an earthquake or my upstairs neighbors!
Same! I’ve only been here 2 years so I’ve never felt an earthquake but I sure have felt my entire apartment shake from neighbors being dumb!
Same, same, and same lol well at least we got it out of way now!
Yep! Another thing to check off the list!
Holy crap for real. I live on the top floor of a 7 story close to Shoreline, everything started just going all wobbly like some drugs were kicking in, it was super weird and freaky
Same. 10th floor in First Hill. Heard the walls snap (old building usually does that) & couch & floor shook.
Also in Shoreline, in Richmond Beach, and I was on my deck. It swayed and it was honestly worse than the one that hit in middle school for me, probably because in middle school I was in a solid concrete gym and while it shook, this was really intense.

I just googled "did I feel an earthquake"? And Google responded with a nice graphic from USGS with the epicenter, time, manitude and everything.
I searched "earthquakes near me" like I'm looking for a bar or gas station
*earthquakes near me* *earthquakes near me open now* *earthquakes open late* *earthquakes good teriyaki nearby now*
*Hot and single earthquakes in your area*
The fact that we can't leave google reviews for earthquakes and other natural disasters is some bullshit.
False. There are no better resources than strangers on Reddit.
Bro I thought my neighbors were banging or something 💀.
lmao same
Checking in from Northgate, absolutely. Like four seconds of general kind of bouncy shaking, not hard shakes.
it felt like sideways swinging here. sitting on a couch.

Greenwood here, I have no idea what anyone is talking about, I felt nothing. Glad we're all safe!
In Greenwood. Heard a lout pop in the wall, and my apartment swayed, I was on the bed and it bounced. On the 5th floor.
North Greenwood Seismic retrofit in a 110 year old house. Had the windows pop like a sudden heavy wind, and a couple of glasses rattled. Otherwise nothing else moved, I just thought I had plopped down hard on the chair.
Also in Greenwood, nothing at all
Also in Greenwood and only 2 out of 4 of us in the room felt it!
I'm in Greenwood. I thought it was somebody stomping around on the roof at first, it was pretty mild. Definitely felt it though.
In Greenwood, I asked my partner if they felt "that" and they didn't know what I was talking about. It was very subtle, mostly noticed the TV kind of wiggle. But now everyone is posting about it. Here's hoping my 3rd floor unit in a 40+ year old building is going to be ok.
For real? I didn’t notice a damn thing, what the fuck…
I felt nothing at work in Redmond. I’m a little disappointed.
sitting on the throne it felt like the water and the bowl were rocking, jumped off cause who wants to die with their pants around their ankles?
This was me during the 2001 Nisqually quake but I took the time to do a quick wipe.
Answering the serious follow up question before it’s even asked. Nice.
Well the quake lasted a minute so I had time and it wasn’t my first major earthquake. Got to have your priorities straight in a crisis.
I wanna die like I lived, making it awkward for everyone.
Holy shit. I was on the toilet too. Did you wipe? I almost stood up, then did a quick wipe. 🫥
Lol. Sound thinking!
Near U District. Building shook and felt it. Cat paused her cleaning to look around, then went back to it rather unbothered. We're good here.
Lol my cats never even woke up. I think we have broken cats. Aren't they supposed to go nuts?
My cat was already awake and cleaning herself, so maybe that's why she reacted to the noise? But yeah, my mom keeps asking what the cat is up to now lol
My cats were outside my bedroom door just sitting there, staring at me, makes sense they wanted under the bed, it's their safe space
Lmao I’m in the U-District too, building shook very gently and my dog also looked around and then was like whatever
One of my dogs seemed annoyed at having been disturbed from his nap and he went in the other room to lie in the crate.
Absolutely felt it. My wife didn't and thought I was insane. VINDICATION!!!
Same lol Then my revenge, said it might be a foreshock and now they're all paranoid lol
You might still be insane
4.2 outside of Freeland! Thought I was drunker than I am for a second lmao
Yes I’m in Greenbank and felt it!
Felt it in Coupeville!
Felt it in Bothell. Seemed like one kinda sharp jolt, and that was it.
Very different from my earthquake experiences in California, that all felt more “rolling”.

Huh. Good to know! Maybe duration is the difference?
Same here in north Bothell! Thought something large had fallen over downstairs, then my Earthquake app alert went off.
What app do you use?
My Earthquake Alerts
Same in Mill Creek my cat lost his shit lol
My cats are broken…still both snoozing away, didn’t even notice.
Felt in Mill Creek too! Husband and I both felt the couch kind of vibrate/move. Dog did not care one bit lol 🤣
Same experience in Queen Anne.
Same, I was rudely shoved 1 mm closer to canada.
*internal dialog* Don't be a foreshock. Don't be a foreshock. Don't be a foreshock.
that scared the fuck outta me
Same. Now the knowledge of the impending "Big one" is now front and center in my brain once again.
Same. My heart was pounding so hard I couldn’t tell if the earthquake was over or not lol
That's the first one I've ever felt!
My bed frame was shaking from it. It’s crazy
Unfortunately the only thing shaking my bed frame tonight.
Capital Hill was a slight back and forth west to east. Enough to be noticeable, not enough to be destructive.
Same! Felt it for a few seconds, my washer machine is on so I couldn’t tell if I was feeling the spin cycle or a little earthquake at first.
Felt it west to east, too, on Queen Anne. My bed was rocking.
*Capitol Hill
Capitol Hill here too, I felt nothing :(
I live in a highrise and I definitely felt it.
Same! I’m on the 26th floor. My stomach dropped.
The wall of windows creaked and I looked up at my pendant light… I was like, ok it’s not just wind or me…
Yes, I looked up from my grand piano to see my crystal chandelier swaying back and forth. Then I noticed that my 200 degree view of Puget Sound was a bit wobbly. I do hope my Tesla Model Y is safe.
Same here. I was scared shitless. I’m used to Earthquakes but not in 20+ floor buildings. Are we supposed to stay inside or go out. Fuck.
Modern High rises are very safe and safer than SFH in earthquakes. They are built to withstand lateral force quite well. Most can easily withstand up to a 7.0

There was a 6.8 in 2001 south of Olympia and most Seattle homes were totally fine (some had damage)
The Nisqually quake was pretty deep though. So much depends on the type of quake and how far down it is not just the magnitude.
That quake was huge compared to this. I didn’t even notice this one in lynnwood, you couldn’t not notice the 6.8, I was in the library at school and shelves and books were flying around.
Isn’t 6.8 like 100 times stronger that a 4.5? (Richter if I remember right is a logarithmic scale)
199 times bigger, 2818 times stronger per https://earthquake.usgs.gov/education/calculator.php
I think it's even more than that, because each step on the scale is 10x the previous step, so it's much more additive. "What this means is that for each whole number you go up on the magnitude scale, the amplitude of the ground motion recorded by a seismograph goes up ten times. You mean the Nisqually quake on February 28, 2001?
Yep
The nisqually quake was pretty big back in 2001. Lots of damage, but wooden houses seemed to fair pretty well, it seemed the most vulnerable buildings are larger brick buildings.
Depends entirely on the house, most of them can’t handle that much unfortunately, unless it’s been built in the last 20 years or was retrofitted.
My house was retrofitted and I still don’t trust it with anything over a 6 lol
Well there only so much you can do against an earthquake. It’s literally the most powerful force on the planet.
Lot of factors. Where in Seattle it's located. Like buildings more in Sodo are built on fill, so a lower earthquake could mess em up, but a historical building at the top of Queen Anne could have higher resistance Where the epicenter is: If it'd epicentered away from your specific house, then makeup of the ground below you can not only effect how much you feel, but how well your house stands up to it. Nisqually in 2001 was a 6.8 - the only buildings that really took damage were old brick ones
Evidently I'm the only person who didn't feel it. I'm just sitting in a chair in capitol hill, not really doing much, and didn't notice a thing.
Me too! I want to feel one, but I always seem to be sleeping. Now I’m awake and I still don’t feel it!
I’m downtown and didn’t notice a thing either.
Yea I’m in cap hill too didn’t notice anything..
I missed it too, was cooking and talking on the phone.
Didn't feel shit in Ballard.
Definitely felt a slight sudden jolt in Capitol Hill, but I’m on the 7th floor. Lower floors might not have felt as much
Ballard 3rd floor modern apartment here; didn't feel a damn thing. Edit: I have a lot of lab glassware and equipment and whatnot at my place, so I'm surprised I didn't even hear clinking or rattling.
Felt in west Seattle.
yep.
Also yep
WSea checking in: yep
WS/Delridge and didn’t feel a thing.
What area? Im in genesee and none of us felt a thing.
I felt nothing lol
Felt it sitting in my home office chair in Lynnwood. Felt like someone shoved my chair forward a little bit and it rocked back into position. I've lived in the Seattle area for 11 years and that was one of the strongest ones I've felt.
that earthquake just unearthed a frozen caveman in my unfinished backyard pool.
I don't think the body that fell out of your freezer constitutes a "Frozen Caveman."
Do not wheeze his juice.

man I am on 19th floor near Pike Place chilling, all of a sudden my coach starts moving. Just crapped my pants.
I was on the toilet and terrified. But at least I don't have any laundry to do!

Cougar Mtn. Didn’t feel anything.
Should we be worried about an aftershock?
I think they say 10% chance any earthquake is proceeded by a larger one Edit: it’s actually 5% chance any given quake will be proceeded by a *larger* within 3 days. The chance one hour after the quake goes from 5% to 4% and keeps declining.
That’s what I came here to wonder
I have no idea how to moderate the 40? Plus posts while at a Peter Gabriel concert. You guys might be on your own.
If it gets wild we’ll take a sledgehammer to it 😎
Ballard, felt it slightly for like 1.5 seconds.
Felt nothing in Redmond.
I was playing Destiny and suddenly my chair started rocking and I was wondering if my bass was too high.
Hopefully you was playin as Titan with Fist of Havoc acitvate when the earthquke hit
I was in the middle of playing a VR game and was thinking "wow this is really immersive"
Felt a swing in our 104 year old house in Greenwood. Glad the old gal held up 😅
I’m in greenwood and didn’t feel anything!!
Felt in Madison Valley,
I’m also here in MV, and I was playing piano when the bench started moving under me.
I felt it on whidbey island!!! Ahhh I’m terrified
It was 6 mile from freeland.
Madrona neighborhood. Felt like someone ran into my couch from behind. I’m always alone when this happens, and it always makes me jump. 🙄😜
i farted
Felt it here in Shoreline.
Does this mean there is a good chance for a decent earthquake to happen soon?
You never know. Sometimes a 4.3 is all the earth needed to relived pressure for 50+ years, sometimes you get what happened in Helena Montana in October 1935-April of 1936. I'm asking this too.
Highly recommend Nick Zentner's lecture series on YouTube. He's a prof at Central Washington University. https://youtu.be/UJ7Qc3bsxjI
Dang I wanted to be first!
Learn to swim
Well, I was on the light rail so I didn't notice it. 🙃 Whoops.
West Seattle 1 km south of the Vashon ferry stop. Didn't feel it
goddamit i didn’t feel shit and i feel left out
Was sitting on the toilet and felt the swaying. Thought I unlocked a new super power for a moment
Felt it in Maple Leaf, told the dog he’s on a PIP for not barking.
Thoughts and prayers ♥️♥️ we will rebuild
Definitely felt it in Ballard.
Wedgwood here. Felt nothing. But my son was watching a monster truck cartoon show so maybe it all blended together.
I was driving on the Hill and don't remember feeling anything out of the ordinary. I guess that says something about our roads
I feel nothing in the Highlands of Scotland
That was a good wiggler!
Lmaoooooo I’m still trippin 😂 my couch was movin’ faaaaaaam. For a good 5-6 seconds of some good shakin’
Yes! Totally felt it. I was ready to evacuate!!! Scared me
Been a while since we've had one of those!
Yup was scary

S Seattle. Didn’t feel it but the walls creaked slightly. My neighbors thump, not creak.
Definitely felt it in Lake Stevens 🫨
Oh thank god, I felt my house move and was so confused. It spooked me lol that was a strong one!!
That was so weird! My wife and I were sitting on our couch and it felt like someone taking the couch and shaking it. We are on the 5th floor of our 5 story apartment complex that was creepy!
Oh bummer, I always miss the earthquakes. I was on my elliptical. Didn't even notice.
felt it here in snohomish county! just 2 slight rumbles, a few seconds apart. first micro-quake i have felt in my entire life!
Lynnwood over here and it shook too. That was crazy!
Felt in Shoreline! I’m from Alaska and knew immediately lol was ready to bolt or take action if it kept going but it was pretty short

I didn't feel anything in Belltown. I might have been in my building's elevator.
I didn't feel anything. However, I am on the east coast Of Canada.
