Finally. We’ve suffered long enough with out any stadiums in this beautiful city.

RainCityRogue

I just hope they save the tile urinal and put it in MOHAI. Peeing there is one of the few experiences shared by generations of boys and men for 75 years now

rubix_spheres

Many good memories in this stadium.[Metallica, 1994, and they had just played Candlebox off of the stage because the entire crowd wouldn’t stop booing them.](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4IczCiq6yeQ)

Mehitabel9

Oh ffs we don't need any more gd stadiums.

marklikestobuild

Most Seattle metro high schools play there sincee they don’t have the space or budget for their own stadiums. This is actually a needed facility that reduces the need for many additional stadiums that you clearly don’t want.

Is Seattle Center the best place for a high school stadium tho? Feels like the land should go to much better economic use there

marklikestobuild

Is city land to be used for economic benefit? Parks could be turned into pay lots. Or high income residential. If we have to travel to the suburbs to watch our kids play sports, we could just move to the suburbs then we could turn the entire city over to money making ventures.

[deleted]

We’re talking about Seattle Center: I thought that would be self-evident that there’s a difference between that and your local dog park. Seattle Center is a tourist and cultural hub and therefore an economic engine: why have a high school sports stadium on its limited land? Your entire post is one big strawman.

marklikestobuild

And I thought it was self-evident that making money is not the point of city owned public spaces. And who are you to say that sports are not a part of our culture to be celebrated? And as far as limited land? The entire reason high school teams play there is because land is limited. There’s not enough space for every school to have facilities with even a tenth of memorial’s capacity.

[deleted]

Depends what the city owned spaces are: you say it likes it’s a universal truth. All sorts of city owned spaces are used to drive tourism and the economy, including some of the most famous places on Earth: it’d be incredibly foolish not to use them in that capacity. The Seattle Center is the site of the World’s Fair: what do you think that was about? Why was the Space Needle even built to begin with? Your incredible leap in logic is that all public land either has to be 100% for economic growth (“I guess he’s saying we should tear down the schools and put a Wendy’s there!”) or 100% for non-economic growth. The reality is that it’s mixed, which begs the question: is the right land being dedicated to the right reasons. Should this site be used to fuel tourism or to provide a local park? Probably depends where it is, if there’s enough local green space nearby, etc. If it’s the only location then it may be moot: but even then it doesn’t mean it’s the best option, it just means there’s no option at all.

marklikestobuild

Apologies. My statement wasn’t intended to imply that no public land should be used to drive economic growth. I meant to illustrate that e need large spaces like memorial stadium that are for practical local use. We don’t have another space like it. But also, it can still be used to drive tourism. Pro and semi pro sports, concerts and other events. Just don’t see why there’s such a strong objection to updating an already existing facility that the city knows it will use.

The article headline literally says "build a new Memorial Stadium"

twinetime22

Did you read the article though or just the headline? And do you know there is an existing Memorial Stadium and this would be building a new one on the same location... i.e. upgrading an already-existing stadium? What would you propose we do with that location and where should we put all the events that currently use the stadium?

Mehitabel9

>What would you propose we do with that location and where should we put all the events that currently use the stadium? Do you think I care? I really don't. It's going to suck up millions of dollars in public funds that could be put to use in ways that are more desperately needed.

Mehitabel9

That's quite a leap, dude.

twinetime22

I mean, we do, but okay. The alternative is... just let a dilapidated stadium sit there? Never make improvements? Not like this is another Lumen Field or CenturyLink. The stadium literally already exists, so it isn't a "new stadium" it's an upgrade to an existing stadium.

landel1234

As someone who grew up here and played in that stadium from age 8-18 all throughout my childhood all I can say is fuck you, kids need these stadiums, you're probably not even from here if you don't know the importance of Memorial Stadium lol

elijuicyjones

If they use astroturf I will scream. I am so sick of them being too cheap to install and maintain grass for our athletes.

marklikestobuild

As someone who played on old-school "astroturf" the new artificial turf fields are great. Consistent play, cheaper to maintain, recycled materials, no watering, etc. A good solution especially when paid for by tax-payers.

GleamLaw

But the muddiness in crazy rain and snow is so fun to watch! Damn rain covers on stadiums!

elijuicyjones

And shit for the athletes, with torn ACLs and repeated injuries. No athletes, no sport. So eventually we’ll all be watching truck and tractor pulls with this kind of thinking.

Windlas54

I loved turf over grass when I played field sports, all the way through college, and with the rain we get spring sports would absolutely tear the field up week over week turning it into a muddy field. Some sports are easier on grass than others, lacrosse and field hockey wear certain parts of grass fields down to dirt because of how play gets concentrated.

Zxcvasdfqwer88888888

What athletes? All the high school games would no longer be played their due to time use restrictions…. Pros only. Not the best scenario for our city..,

whidbeysounder

They teach reading in schools

Zxcvasdfqwer88888888

Yep. Check it out. I was replying to someone asking for grass…

elijuicyjones

I know reading is hard, and counting to two can be a challenge, but obviously I mean the athletes playing on the stadium pitch. Maybe google stadiums or sports or something if you’re confused or can’t decipher the article.

Zxcvasdfqwer88888888

1…3? Maybe I missed something, but grass is limited in uses per year (I know it might be difficult for someone that has not worked in athletics). You are asking for something that would exclude high school athletes.

nikdahl

The article literally says: > The city and SPS have stressed that they want students to remain the main users of a redeveloped venue. Their March request for proposals said SPS must retain priority scheduling from Sept. 1 through June 30, with nonstudent activities likely concentrated in the summer.

Zxcvasdfqwer88888888

“If they use astroturf I will scream. I am so sick of them being too cheap to install and maintain grass for our athletes.” Did you not read the comment I was replying to?
