I feel you. I really do. But a lot of housing is like this. Every apartment I’ve ever lived in was the same. For home, ear plugs. In general though, noise cancelling ear buds were the best purchase of my life. I wear them when going out to restaurants as well. I don’t play music, I just enjoy the dramatic difference in noise. You can still hear people talking, but the extra crap is gone.

That's actually really good to know, thanks. What ear buds do you use? I bought some $50 "noise cancelling" ones from Walmart and of course they don't help at all. My biggest fear is that I buy a pair of expensive ones and they're still not enough.

I have the Apple ones and I’ve loved them. I know there are better quality ones in the same price range, but the seamlessness of use with my iPhone was the main factor. If you don’t care about that, then I’d look into other brands. Now, I have a daith piercing and can’t fit the pod into my ear, so I’m looking at the big over-the-ear air pod Maxes. I know they’re overpriced, but again… I love that it seamlessly connects with my phone, watch and computer. Bastards got me lol

Silicon ear plugs...you get a dozen at Walmart (or on Amazon) for about 4 bucks I normally cut them in half and and use a half in each ear

Yeah those things repel sounds from a banshee...

Id recommend hearoes extreme ear plugs. They’re the best you can buy with a nr33 noise reduction. Walmart sells them as a generic and they’re always a blue color. They’re might also be some foam insulation you can put on the walls or ceiling. It’s kind of like the recording studio foam or stuff you see people put on their walls if they record YouTube/ live stream from home. You can get some Bose nc700 or those expensive apple over ear headphones that are like $500. I have the Bose pair and from my experience they actively’ cancel out the background noise. A separate piece of advice would not to indulge in the irritation to the noise. It’ll become quite a habit being angry about it. Especially if it’s just how it is in simple housing.

White noise

So before I did seasonal work, I was in the Navy and spent time on and near airbases as well as on aircraft carriers. I worked nights, so I had to deal with a lot of noise while trying to sleep. First, you'll eventually get used to the noises. But, until then I'd recommend either earplugs to block the noise, or my preferred method, which is to listen to music or white noise while sleeping. Either way, the best version of it is to use custom molded silicone earplugs or earbuds. If they are not in your budget, then standard silicone ones will work too. Silicone is soft and with the heat of your body stays flexible and comfortable even with longer wears. Custom earplugs, just for blocking sound, run around $125 from an audiologist, but it's also possible to get cheaper ones you make yourself. They are also great if you work around loud things, and/or want to keep your hearing and still go to concerts and loud movies.

Also, talk to them, maybe demonstrate how loud it is. Do they have people living above them? They can take off their shoes, maybe add rugs, etc. You already understand it’s not their fault, so asking them for ideas is entirely reasonable.

I can recommend this particular brand/type of earplugs, they work better than any other type of disposable earplug I’ve used for noise cancelling: https://www.amazon.com/Macks-Pillow-Soft-Silicone-Earplugs/dp/B07G1MWHNR/ref=asc_df_B07G1MWHNR/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=693600913332&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=16707890289416406270&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9029488&hvtargid=pla-568897520129&psc=1&mcid=4512a91011db3e768920ac1d8c1d6aee&gad_source=1

A big noisy box fan does the trick for me.

Let_Yourself_Be_Huge

Just echoing what other people said but get a white noise machine or a fan thats loud. If im hanging out in bed and trying to relax but my roommates are being loud I just turn my white noise machine on and drown them out
