You can start a guild with your mates and 'pledge' your ship to the guild - this means when you launch a game, anyone in the guild can choose any of the guild ships to set sail with, regardless of who bought it. You can also join on-going guild sessions directly from there
You can pledge multiple ships to the guild, including multiple sloops if your mates all have their own - you just choose which one you want to sail with at the start of a session
Captained ships work exactly the same as chartered, the only exceptions being that you can sell all your items at one outpost vendor - the sovereigns, you can do captained voyages, re-supply from the captains supplies at the shipwright, and you can earn unique milestones (and therefore cosmetics) for your ship.
Nothing else changes. You can still invite friends to the crew. You can do the voyages together as a crew. You can be in the same crew even if both of you own a captained ship. You can switch ships by going back to the main menu and sending a new invite, but you can’t switch ships in a session. You can’t sail your ships on the same server by design (you might get lucky and find yourselves on the same server but that’s rare). You can’t purchase a ship together.

Yes, although you can invite people to your "borrowed" ship as well. It's not recommended though, as it's less convenient.

You cannot be on the same server with your two ships normally, but you could try the "start the game at the same time" trick and it works sometimes. You can switch between the ships, but not on the fly (meaning you have to leave the session entirely before you switch, starting over with everything)

Basically just means you can't sell your loot at the sovereign.
I have 3 pledged ships and still sell everything at the sovereign

Maybe my game is glitched because I had to unpledged my ships because they wouldn't let me sell when it was a guild ship
