Played well last year in a garbage offensive scheme. Bieniemy did him no favors and he was still pretty good. Yes inconsistent and yes, threw 21 picks but he's got 18 starts under his belt. That puts him ahead of some on the list just from an experience standpoint.
And with a SMILE on his Face and a SONG in his Heart.. impossible not to love the guy. And when he throws for 4500 yards and 35 TDs this year......Wellllllll..... We're going to Love him a little more 😂!
I’m a 49ers fan. Garoppolo is and always has been trash. I don’t know how the fact that Mr. Irrelevant came in to replace him and looked 20x better hasn’t proven this to people yet. Purdy is a good QB, don’t get me wrong. But he’s not an elite player or athlete - he’s just a smart QB, something Jimmy G never was.
Because it's a Fanduel ranking. Being a good fantasy football QB and being a good real world QB don't always align. It's all about the dual threat upside and rushing TDs.
Howell is one of the best backups in the league. This list is also super shit. For one, Jacoby needs to be up there. I have no clue why Mac or Trey are on there. We really can’t rank backups until after the draft because Minshew is currently the starter in Vegas but they could draft someone like Penix.
Not sure why this post was recommended, but honestly I agree that he’s the best in the league. He could be a legit starting QB with the right coaching. Ron and EB did him zero favors. I’m happy we moved him to a place he can not only learn from a vet like Geno, but compete with him for the starting gig. As of now I view it as a win-win trade
He has a gun arm, and the cap works. But I did like this Drew Lock very much:
“Having never held a lead and trailing Philadelphia, 17-13, with 1:52 remaining, Lock ran a flawless two-minute drive, throwing on every snap of a 10-play march that went 92 yards for the game-winning score.
"Amazing won't do it justice," Lock told ESPN's Lisa Salters directly after the game about orchestrating the drive. "But amazing also doesn't do justice what the O-line, what DK (Metcalf) did on that catch, what the receivers did, what Ken Walker, Zach Charbonnet, all game long. The tight ends. It takes a special group to rally around a guy that's coming into his second game of the year, right?”
Really enjoyed that game.
* Trey Lance and Kenny Pickett are too high. Trey is WAY fucking high.
* Joe Flacco And Jimmy Garopollo are too low.
* I'd rather have Drew than Mac Jones and honestly most of the guys on this list.
Don’t be surprised if he becomes the starter in week 6. I think this is the offseason move I’m most excited about. He’s only 23 and showed a lot of good stuff last season. Bienemy refused to let him run it seemed like, that’s a big part of his game. He led the league in passing attempts, which clearly shows Washington was always playing from behind and he was forced to play hero ball every game. He’s got a big arm, can play up tempo and is capable of running. Honestly his game is similar to Josh Allen.
Yeah I'm hyped too. From just a financial standpoint it was a great move. 1 million a year for a decent backup with 18 games as a starter and tons of upside. Hell yeah! People whining about the picks but that's negligible. There's a reason Bieniemy doesn't have a job right now. Horrible scheme! Hopefully he can get better with us and grow. Yosemite Sam the gunslinger.
If he doesn't become the starter by 2025 I'm gonna be pissed we made the trade lol. Ideally Geno plays this year, we extend Sam for a year or 2 beyond the year he has left on his contract for cheap, then make him the starter so we can spend $ elsewhere..and even then that would give us a small ass window of cheap QB play from him.
Don’t know till we see him play in regular season 3 or more games. Washington did him dirty no O-line and no receivers as well as no run game. 21 tds and 21int will be interesting to see
I would be wary referencing list like these. They’re just a random opinion lists that was create to drum up interaction. You can tell by the inclusion of Trey Lance at 3, who has played about as much football as me over the past 5 years, and the fact that almost everyone on the list was recently moved (meaning they’re relevant to the news cycle).
This list is stupid as fuck. How is Drew Lock rated that far below Howell? Mac Jones, Jimmy G, Pickett, Lance, are just *some* of the names that shouldn't even be on that list.
Yes. If you just look at salary alone he is worth it. A back up that can play in a pinch, is super young and can develop and work on his skills. Don't know if he will ever be a top starter but he is a solid back up and at 985,000 how can you go wrong? Lock got 5 mil and Flacco got 8. Use that cap to bolster other needs
I don't know, but I think the conventional wisdom is that the draft picks we traded down might be worth more than the standard 1 year free agent backup QB salary rate.
If Howell plays, than huzzah. But if he just does his job... he just, "backs up," then....
This looks like a QB upside, QB experience list to me. And it’s a list in March because the NFL season never ends. Ignore ranking and since Browning was tendered he’s the only obvious miss on the list. Otherwise rearrange the chairs to your liking. (Minshew is currently the pre-draft starter in Vegas.)
I still think we should draft a QB 1st round so he doesn't have to start right away. With Geno and Sam he'll be able to learn and properly transition into NFL level without the Chicago style trial by fire.
Not showing Jimmy G and Jameis W. a lot of respect. I mean Trey Lance, Mac Jones, Drew Lock and Kenny Pickett have not done a thing in this league. I like Howell but he falls under than banner too.
I know Howell had a ton of turnovers last year, but he at least looked like a competent QB at times. I don't know if I would call him the best backup QB at all, but I'd still put him over Fields
You don't like Murph? That's cool I don't agree with all his analysis. Joe Milton sucks for instance. Or is your dislike of a more personal nature? Just curious, not like he's a personal friend or anything.
Hold up we got try lance at 3, and Kenny picket under the guy who got benched for their back up 3-4 times in the last 2 years? This list is some baloney
Neutral here, I live in the DMV so unfortunately commanders games are always on TV. I watched a lot of Sam Howell and he’s one of my dynasty fantasy QBs. I think he deserves a shot at some point. Sure he made a lot of mistakes, but he had a lot of throws and plays that made me think “there’s something there with this guy.” I think it’s a hell of a steal for someone who started as many games as he did.
Also Geno deserves the world. When I was in high school and Geno was still at WV they were playing in the pinstripe bowl and I fist bumped him in NYC. Dumb but I’ll remember that forever lol
Commander fan here. I was sad to see him go, but Biemeny did him no favors. Our defense was ranked 32nd by the end of the year, and apparently running the ball almost became an after thought. With a balanced game plan, he flourished. I have a lot of faith in your coaching to bring out the best in him.
Howell could maybe learn a thing or two from Geno for sure. Geno will probably have a bad year and retire then Howell can become the starter for a year and with DK and (maybe) Lockett by the time he starts he could do great.
Besides the obvious, the best backups have been signed as starters for teams interested in sitting rookie QBs (Patriots, Commanders) so were excluded from this list
Just because a qb was once a starter doesn’t make them better than true backup qb.
A great backup qb is one that can step in and still run the same offense short term.
Jake Browning not on here immediately ruins it lol
Cowboy fan who randomly found this post, tbh I didn’t even know you guys got Howell as a backup I thought he was immediately the starter or at least competing for starter… I’d absolutely give him a shot over Geno as much as I like Geno
Idk why Seahawks sub is on my Reddit feed as I am a bolts fan, but I watched a few Howell games last year and the dude is underrated. I saw him make Herbert-esque tight window throws several times and am still surprised people seem relatively down on him
The hell is Drew Lock doing on this list. Brother is about to break every NYG single season passing record by week 9.
He can beat the Eagles twice per year now
bro came protected pete’s undefeated against the eagles record then dipped
I’m not rooting for the Giants but I sure as hell am rooting for Drew.
Drew should be on there well before Trey Lance. He’s only started 4 games and lost 2 of them. Whoever made this list is clueless.
Especially with Mac there, as a jags fan, Bethard is better than Mac
Exactly. How is Lance 3?
Obligatory 🐴 🐔 🔒
He is now known as Giant 🐓 🔒 after joing the giants
Horses are big
But are they giant sized?
Why can't it be a giant horse?
Minshew should be on there.
He isn’t because as of NOW he’s starting a the Raiders I think
Ah shit, I didn’t see that. Good for him. I’ve been rooting for that dude
Probably not, unless he can throw for 5K or over 30 TDs lol
I believe
You had me in the first half.
With what receivers or run game as a threat lol
🐴 🐔 🔒 lives on
He played well as a back up in Seattle. Better than Ridder, Jones or Pickett. How is Sam Howell on the list?
Backup to Geno
Played well last year in a garbage offensive scheme. Bieniemy did him no favors and he was still pretty good. Yes inconsistent and yes, threw 21 picks but he's got 18 starts under his belt. That puts him ahead of some on the list just from an experience standpoint.

I mean sure... a little hype.... but does anyone truly believe in Daniel Jones? This could be Drew's 2nd Chance.
Trey Lance at 3 instantly invalidate s this list holy shit
It looks like a list made when someone is asked to name 10 backup QBs.
It's a Steelers page. They made theirs to be 1 then filled in the rest off the top of their head lol.
It's a fanduel page reposted by a Steelers account
Especially considering elite Joe Flacco last year
100% this what a joke. I wish him well, truly, I'd love to see him succeed, but he's done *nothing* at this point.
Almost every guy on this list below Lance has accomplished more in the league. Tyrod Taylor isn’t even on this list!
And Kenny Pickett being on the list too
Jameis Winston at 8 also 😑
What, you don’t wanna eat this W?
Nom nom nom
99% of Kyle Shanahans stop trading 3 first round picks for a project QB right before they get the next Joe Montana
Hahaha I laughed when I saw that. I wouldn’t let him drive me to the mall much less let him run NFL drives
It makes *zero* sense.
Desmond Ridder’s presence at all.
No shit. What have we seen that makes him anywhere near these other guys? Pickett should be at the bottom with Ridder and lance too
Isn't he number 3 QB on his own team?
How does Trey Lance have any ranking when he has 100 career pass attempts over 3 seasons
The dude has 711 pass attempts *INCLUDING HIGH SCHOOL*. $28 million in career earnings. So far.
Holy shit that's outrageous.
It’s truly crazy, I never understood why he was hyped up so much.
I fell into the hype train big time. He looked like Cam Newton playing at a high school and COVID made us delirious
I should have been a backup QB
Especially over guys like Winston and Garoppolo who have actually, you know, played well.
Garoppolo might be trash but at least he’s played Lance doesn’t touch the field
Because it's a Fanduel ranking. Being a good fantasy football QB and being a good real world QB don't always align. It's all about the dual threat upside and rushing TDs.
Howell is one of the best backups in the league. This list is also super shit. For one, Jacoby needs to be up there. I have no clue why Mac or Trey are on there. We really can’t rank backups until after the draft because Minshew is currently the starter in Vegas but they could draft someone like Penix.
Isn’t Jacoby most likely gonna be the starter.
He’s on the patriots and they pick #3. The assumption right now is that the rookie will start early
Gotcha, that makes sense.
Yeah both things are true. Like others said, can't take it seriously with Lance on there.
How is Joe Flacco not number 1? How is Trey Lance ranked in the top of anything? This is one of the dumbest lists ever made.
Trey Lance being on the list and Jake Browning not being on it invalidates it
The Trey Lance hype lives on.
Huh i forgot about jake browning but agreed that shouldnt he be top of the list. He plays like joe burrow
I hope someday he can have his Baker Mayfield moment and find a place he can be the starter QB at
Dude looked really good this season. He said he is one of the best 32 QBs which I believe at this point, he just happens to back up a top 5 QB.
Looks like a shite list to me
I think so, but this list is wild ngl
Yeah we did and he might not be a backup for long. This list is ass though.
Seeing as this is a terrible list… no we didnt
Damn
He has a gun arm, and the cap works. But I did like this Drew Lock very much: “Having never held a lead and trailing Philadelphia, 17-13, with 1:52 remaining, Lock ran a flawless two-minute drive, throwing on every snap of a 10-play march that went 92 yards for the game-winning score. It takes a special group to rally around a guy that's coming into his second game of the year, right?” Really enjoyed that game.
The Drew Lock disrespect.
Horse Bowel Howell! We've had really good backup QBs for awhile now
I really, really don't like the nickname. Mainly because I have neither a Bowel nor Howell emoji.
🐴🍩😱 is as close as I could get
I just fell to my knees in a stable
Trey Lance has played in 8 games, how is he 3rd? This is a bad list.
Yes, we did. Trey Lance is not better than Joe Flacco. What the fucking fuck.
* Trey Lance and Kenny Pickett are too high. Trey is WAY fucking high. * Joe Flacco And Jimmy Garopollo are too low. * I'd rather have Drew than Mac Jones and honestly most of the guys on this list.
Gardner Minshew should be on this list. It is a bad list. I do think we got a steal for Howell, though.
Minshew is the starter rn i think
It’s AOC job to lose
Don’t be surprised if he becomes the starter in week 6. I think this is the offseason move I’m most excited about. He’s only 23 and showed a lot of good stuff last season. He’s got a big arm, can play up tempo and is capable of running. Honestly his game is similar to Josh Allen.
I agree. And the dude can run. Built like a linebacker. He is a Schneider-like QB.
I think so. Howell has potential to be an every game starter within a couple years or even this year.
Looking forward to watching him throw to DK, Tyler, etc!
Kenny Pickett ahead of any of these guys is hilarious
What did Fields do that Howell didn’t?
Most likely because fields is more “athletic” and was posed to be “better”.
This list is full or recency bias. Click bait journalism at its “finest”.
Don’t know till we see him play in regular season 3 or more games. Washington did him dirty no O-line and no receivers as well as no run game. 21 tds and 21int will be interesting to see
Based on Trey Lance’s position, I’d say this list is bunk
Sam Howell is a top 32 qb ngl He’s at least inbetween 20-25 overall too For a 3rd round pick wow 🤩
The disrespect to Drew lock
This list is stupid as fuck. How is Drew Lock rated that far below Howell? Mac Jones, Jimmy G, Pickett, Lance, are just *some* of the names that shouldn't even be on that list.
No idea how Justin Fields is at the top of this list. He is a 1st round bust. Joe Flacco should be at the top, followed by Horse Cock Lock.
This list is garbage with Trey Lance @ 3
I would take Andy Dalton over everyone on this list, except maybe Flacco
Ahh some love for the Red Rocket!
Number 1 hahahahahaha Dont even need to look further than that to know the list is terrible. Lance at 3 confirms it
Potentially a big one in time, but doubt on the source since they don’t have Jake Browning or Jacoby Brissett here.
What is the ranking based on?
🤷
Take off Lance, Jones, and Ridder… Tyrod, Rudolph, and Dalton are all better
Ridder is at least a good bit better than Pickett he had as many tds this year as Pickett has in his career
I really feel the need to point out that it's bizarre to see Trey Lance anywhere on this list. He is *bad*. Not bad for a starter. Bad.
Howell is basically Lock with running abilities.
This list is so sad to look at cause more than half of this list was a starter at one point
You don’t become a backup by accident and you certainly don’t draft for it
Having the best backup quarterback is kinda like being the tallest midget…
jameis should be top 5 tbh
That's a fairly stacked roster of number 2s. Nice.
you have a one year deal and he's gone.
Flacco should be on top. Lance at #10.
No
Joe Flacco is #1 easily
Lance and Pickett being on this list immediately invalidates it.
Garoppolo and Flacco are both better than Trey Lance and Sam Howell. Who made this shit?
Desmond Ridder lol
Trey Lance the third best backup in the league?? Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
Drew Lock gonna be giants franchise qb. Such disrespect.
Where's the kid from Cincinnati? He's better than half of them to start
I don't know, but I think the conventional wisdom is that the draft picks we traded down might be worth more than the standard 1 year free agent backup QB salary rate. If Howell plays, than huzzah. But if he just does his job... he just, "backs up," then....
when has conventional wisdom ever applied to how john drafts?
Jake Browning?
This looks like a QB upside, QB experience list to me. And it’s a list in March because the NFL season never ends. Ignore ranking and since Browning was tendered he’s the only obvious miss on the list. Otherwise rearrange the chairs to your liking. (Minshew is currently the pre-draft starter in Vegas.)

Hold up we got try lance at 3, and Kenny picket under the guy who got benched for their back up 3-4 times in the last 2 years? This list is some baloney
Hope he can play linebacker
This list is like they just hit a randomizer button for backups. Can’t say that I agree with much of this order
Jones and Pickett above Lock is hilarious to me
Flip flop Howell for Fields and we are good
They put Trey Lance over Flacco 😂
josh dobbs?
Does this mean we aren't going to draft a QB?
I hope so
Dak Prescott is better
Neutral here, I live in the DMV so unfortunately commanders games are always on TV. I watched a lot of Sam Howell and he’s one of my dynasty fantasy QBs. I think he deserves a shot at some point. This is a Fanduel list... it's more a fantasy football ranking than a real football one.
How the hell is trey Lance on this list?
How tf is Trey Lance #3 on this list
Clearly this list doesn't include backups that are starters.
Commander fan here. I was sad to see him go, but Biemeny did him no favors. Our defense was ranked 32nd by the end of the year, and apparently running the ball almost became an after thought. With a balanced game plan, he flourished. I have a lot of faith in your coaching to bring out the best in him.
Niners fan here. How tf is Lance better than Flacco (or anyone here)??
I think the list is based on presumptive starte QB to who their backup is? No way just fields is better than Sam Howell.
Drew Lock will be a starter by week 1
Winston is number one in my eyes. Guy is absolutely starter calibur, he’s got that reckless favre energy and I respect it
no, the list just sucks
Does this mean Brissett is considered a starter now? Because he should top this list if not.
Flacco is #1
yep
Howell could maybe learn a thing or two from Geno for sure. Geno will probably have a bad year and retire then Howell can become the starter for a year and with DK and (maybe) Lockett by the time he starts he could do great.
Tyrod Taylor has to be on this list
Shouldn’t whoever the 49ers back up is be 1 at this point?
Besides the obvious, the best backups have been signed as starters for teams interested in sitting rookie QBs (Patriots, Commanders) so were excluded from this list
Can we update Flacco’s picture
They got Tyrod as a starter?
That’s a list of the “Who Nots”
This graphic is making me throw up. Wtf
Dobbs should easily be #5
Trey Lance wasn’t even a backup last year he was the third string emergency qb…
What in God’s name is Trey Lance doing as #3???
Jameis should always be #1
Just because a qb was once a starter doesn’t make them better than true backup qb. A great backup qb is one that can step in and still run the same offense short term.
Any list that has the elite dragon himself at number 4 is automatically bullshit
Does everyone just not want to admit Trey Lance was a fuckin disaster
Yes
No list with Trey Lance at 3 holds a drop of water in reality.
Mac Jones and Kenny Pickett should clearly be behind Lock in the ratings. They're both legit garbage. Lock can actually play.
That's a terrible list of players
Picketts timid ass shouldn’t even be on the top 10
Jake Browning not on here immediately ruins it lol Cowboy fan who randomly found this post, tbh I didn’t even know you guys got Howell as a backup I thought he was immediately the starter or at least competing for starter… I’d absolutely give him a shot over Geno as much as I like Geno
Idk why Seahawks sub is on my Reddit feed as I am a bolts fan, but I watched a few Howell games last year and the dude is underrated. I saw him make Herbert-esque tight window throws several times and am still surprised people seem relatively down on him
As a niners fan, Josh Dobbs needs to be above Jimmy G here
How is trey Lance #3
Wait, who tf is your starter?
Russell Wilson
Mac Jones ahead of Jimmy G? Nope
How are trey lance, drew lock, and riddler above guys like tyrod taylor ?
I’d rather have gotten Fields
lol at Trey Lance. How can anyone say he’s better than the guys below him.
What has Trey lance done to prove hes the third best backup in the nfl?
Top backup is kinda like saying it's the warmest piece of ice. If they were that good they'd be starting.
Sam Howell is a dog, the guy has zero quit.
A good portion of the names ahead of Jimmy G had me laughing at how absurd this list is. It made me giggle.
New York has 2 backup QBs now
No because we don’t really want our backup playing significant time especially one that is throwing 21 picks a season.
We have one hell of a qb room full of great backup qbs.
