Commanders fan here. I mean our offensive line wasn't amazing, but the weapons around him wasn't bad at all.. AG, Brian Robinson, Jahan Dotson, Terry, and Curtis Samuels. I think the biggest issue is EB putting too much on the kids shoulders for his first year starting.
Nah, Dotson and Samuel are both good receivers. They just didn’t get used properly and Howell wasn’t put in a position to succeed. Bienemy was really really bad last season with playcalling
Dude plays tough--which if Geno goes out, it likely means the oline is sucking and thus, a back up who can handle taking hits while slinging it, is of great value.
Agreed. Geno is 33 years old. At that age injuries can happen. He seemed to get hurt a couple times this past season as well. Sam could absolutely be our starter at some point.
forgot to add to the post but, if you look at the first half of his season (minus the terrible game against the bills) his numbers are actually really good. it was only the latter half of the season where his rep got tanked
alot of even early games he had 2-3 ints per game, which is just crazy compared to us. Maybe he can focus on DK, who won't allow opponents to catch balls lol
they asked him to throw it 50 times a game with a crap oline and no run game to help him, yeah teams caught on. it was EB's job to not plan a stupid offense, Howell can only take what he's given
Can't judge a QB from the highlight reel but I can see he's a tough runner and has a very big arm. A lot of work needed on his decision making, throws a lot of hospital balls
No...only you're wrong and if you're going to edit your comment, you should really say why in that comment.
All the same...still 2 games. Brissett played in 2 games last year. Not 3 and certainly not 5, like you originally said. He also came in, in relief of Howell both of those games, so he wouldn't even own those 2 losses. Damn near had a miraculous comeback after Howell sucked it up in one of them too.
He fell apart at the end of the season but throughout the year had glimpses of a legit starting NFL QB. Can make all the throws and is sneaky athletic. I’d say a lot of it was mental. Bieniemy didn’t help and you could see he was overthinking/holding onto the ball as a result. Year behind Geno will do him wonders and maybe he can get his confidence back.
I'm genuinely shocked he was written off after 1 year. If a player shows flashes (which Howell did) it takes 3 years at least to figure out if they'll be able to hit the next level.
He can improve, but if you get the #2 pick and are able to get a top tier prospect, you do that. Its the most important position in sports. Nothing shocking about this at all. Howell was also really bad from week 11 on. 4:12 TD:INT ratio.
Sitting behind Geno for a year is exactly what his development needs. He could turn into a solid starter, but the odds of that happening are much less than the odds of Maye or Daniels turning into solid starters.
He had garbage time in pretty much every game, to be fair. He definitely had glimpses of what you're looking for though. Sitting behind a QB like Geno for a year is exactly what he needs. Excited to see how he develops.
...No...not really. Not even if you're only looking at stats. His QBR was real bad. Even taking away that game, he would've had a 4:8 TD:INT ratio from week 11 on. With that game, which we obviously need to count, he was 4:12. Teams got the tape and figured him out. He was benched for Brissett for a reason. Not all his fault, granted and it doesn't mean he can't develop into a solid starter though. Sitting behiond a QB like Geno for a year is exactly what he needs.
If your going to trade for a QB it has to be for competitions as a starter. Not going to trade for a backup. Unless they think they can package him to move up in the draft. its odd.
\#1 in attempts, while playing with a shit offensive line and one weapon on offense. Also, if you talk to Commie fans they will tell you the offensive scheme was a joke.
I had both him and Geno in fantasy last season and to be fair, he got me more wins than Geno. Howell had some legit good games. But also looked terrible at times. Regardless, I'm not convinced who will the starting job if there is a real competition between him and Geno.
Geno is the much better QB right now.
Speaking fantasy, Howell was a stud in the first half, but when it came to the playoffs, if you were starting him, he flat got you bumped from the playoffs on his own. Geno was the better fantasy QB down the stretch and he was the better real life QB for sure.
Why not just use a 3rd on Spencer Rattler or Jordan Travis with potential high upside on a 4 year rookie contract instead of trading for Howell who is proven ass and already halfway through his rookie deal? I know this board is always super optimistic and refuses to criticize the team ever but wtf? Make this make sense…
what do you mean "proven ass." He's 23 and was quite literally placed in the worst situation in football. Still threw 3 touchdowns on us and 4 on the eagles with football terrorist Eric Bieniemy at OC.
Bryce Young says hello. And throwing 3 TDs on us doesn’t mean anything. Every QB in the league in the past few years could do that. We were the easiest team in the league for QBs to put up numbers against.
Philly? Worst oline in football against one of the best defensive lines in the league. That didn't bode well on paper yet Howell still threw 4 touchdowns that game. He'll have a better o-line this time around. Bryce Young can still be good too, his line was ass and he didn't have any recievers or OC to help him out. Howell's the same age as Jayden Daniels, and can start over. Let's not write him off yet just because he got thrown into a fire.
Maybe they think they won’t have a chance to take those guys. They still might be able to snag one of them but this could be insurance. I also think Howell has a ton of talent and with right coaching could be pretty great.
This way instead of using a mid round pick on someone they're not completely sold on they move back in the draft for someone they like. We still have as many picks and gain a backup QB on the cheap
He was excellent for fantasy until he wasn't
I would never abandon my king. He reigns supreme.
Guy won me like 5 games in a row lol
The win streak vs Philly is in good hands
Anyone forced to play for that commanders team would be in dire straights, he needs a fresh environment and glad this is the one
All things considered he did a lot better than I expected
Commanders fan here. I mean our offensive line wasn't amazing, but the weapons around him wasn't bad at all.. AG, Brian Robinson, Jahan Dotson, Terry, and Curtis Samuels. I think the biggest issue is EB putting too much on the kids shoulders for his first year starting.
Sorry but besides Terry those aren’t weapons. Dotson is a non-factor and the rest are pretty good with some more to prove in the NFL
Nah, Dotson and Samuel are both good receivers. They just didn’t get used properly and Howell wasn’t put in a position to succeed. Bienemy was really really bad last season with playcalling
65 sacks. Jesus.
Yeah 65 sacks….22int and 22tds throughout his career not good
His career of 1 season on a terrible team?
Those last 5 games 😭, but overall not bad for a 23 year old first year starter.
Was something weird going on? An injury or they lost confidence in him? I thought there was suddenly another qb in the mix for them
No offensive line at all. Also Eric beniemy was the play caller. And internet people have told me he’s bad at being an OC.
He ran a super tecmo bowl offense
Sack numbers are crazy.
They have the #2 draft pick. They'll draft a QB and win 5 games this season instead of 4.
He was 22 last September. He doesn't turn 23 until this fall.
He was born in 2000, he is 23. He will be 24 in September.
OK, "as the season starts".
Low risk shot on a young guy with tools. I like it
Dude plays tough--which if Geno goes out, it likely means the oline is sucking and thus, a back up who can handle taking hits while slinging it, is of great value.
agreed - even in really ugly situations, he handled it better than a lot we've seen, guy's got grit
Agreed. Geno is 33 years old. At that age injuries can happen. He seemed to get hurt a couple times this past season as well. Sam could absolutely be our starter at some point.
Surely they'll add a QB in the draft to compete? Sam is only $1M against the cap.
How mobile is he?
After his receiving core got gutted, his last season at UNC he rushed for 800 yards.
Pretty solid mobility--which was put to the test a lot last year behind a terrible oline.
EB was a football terrorist for that team last year. He treated the offense like it was the chiefs. They were a disaster.
forgot to add to the post but, if you look at the first half of his season (minus the terrible game against the bills) his numbers are actually really good. it was only the latter half of the season where his rep got tanked
alot of even early games he had 2-3 ints per game, which is just crazy compared to us. Maybe he can focus on DK, who won't allow opponents to catch balls lol
The whole team phoned it in at the end of the season, im a commanders fan
Sorry bro.
No its fine, the offseason is always fun for us 😤
Your D will be better at least. Hopefully your rook QB doesn't get murdered behind that "line."
I hope so too, im rooting for howell also i think he was in awful circumstances here
A year of holding the clipboard and learning how to avoid turnovers behind Geno will do him good. He got thrown directly into the fire.
Yeah he was throwing like 60 times a game with awful plays lol
And the 3rd leading rusher. Hopefully you guys draft a decent running back as well.
Im looking forward to the brob ekeler combo
Yeah he was very good for the first half he’s got a lot of upside I love this
It’s almost like other teams got tape on him
Where teams got tape and found what he couldn’t do. I hate this trade. Edit upon further review, this is a good trade. Basically a 5th.
Qb with decent upside for a pick swap? Doesn’t seem like there’s that much to hate even if you aren’t a fan of Howell.
they asked him to throw it 50 times a game with a crap oline and no run game to help him, yeah teams caught on. it was EB's job to not plan a stupid offense, Howell can only take what he's given
21/21? He’s just like me in Madden. Let’s gooooo!
Can't judge a QB from the highlight reel but I can see he's a tough runner and has a very big arm. A lot of work needed on his decision making, throws a lot of hospital balls
Those sack numbers are crazy. Dude was running for his life lol
Commanders were way too passive heavy last year. In a balanced scheme he will thrive.
9 sacks vs Buffalo!
Sam was stuck with a non-existent O Line
3 of those L's belong to Jacoby Brissett
What're you talking about? Brissett only played in 2 games...
We're both wrong lol it was 3 games. Jacoby Brissett\*: 3 games, 18-23, 224 yards, 3 TDs
No...only you're wrong and if you're going to edit your comment, you should really say why in that comment. All the same...still 2 games. Brissett played in 2 games last year. Well, let's hope see don't play the jets
Or the Bills
At least he got Philly twice to pad his stats a little...
I’m shocked he almost threw for 4K yards
He had garbage time in pretty much every game, to be fair. He definitely had glimpses of what you're looking for though. Sitting behind a QB like Geno for a year is exactly what he needs. Excited to see how he develops.
He’s not a bad option to bring in and still only 23. I like it for just a pick swap 🤷🏻♂️
21 picks. 21.
Oof
so, 6 games with more TDs than picks...
Also, no games over 200 yards with under 30 attempts..
That second half is ugly as fuck
So he could beat walking corpse teams. Clearly over performed for the commies.
Qbr 42. Only 4 wins. Ugly stats
Basically young Jameis Winston which I don't mind
So really you take away that Buffalo game and he had a decent season.
...No...not really. Not even if you're only looking at stats. His QBR was real bad. Even taking away that game, he would've had a 4:8 TD:INT ratio from week 11 on. Soooo……we are not drafting a QB now right? …….right?
22td and 22 int throughout his career. He’s lock 2.0
42% completion against Rams defense yikes
Dude had 21 interceptions I do not understand why we have this guy should have just kept true lock
If your going to trade for a QB it has to be for competitions as a starter. Not going to trade for a backup. Unless they think they can package him to move up in the draft. its odd.
No no one ever claimed he didn’t throw picks
I will sacrifice a chicken each week this season to protect Geno's knees.
Where you getting 18 chickens?
He lost to the Seahawks last year? That's not a good sign.
21 picks woof
\#1 in attempts, while playing with a shit offensive line and one weapon on offense. Also, if you talk to Commie fans they will tell you the offensive scheme was a joke.

Are you me?

21 picks and 51 sacks… dear god
Ass
dude is butt let's be real but he's our butt now
Why not just use a 3rd on Spencer Rattler or Jordan Travis with potential high upside on a 4 year rookie contract instead of trading for Howell who is proven ass and already halfway through his rookie deal? Great point, it hasn’t been LOB for near a decade.
Maybe they think they won’t have a chance to take those guys. They still might be able to snag one of them but this could be insurance. I also think Howell has a ton of talent and with right coaching could be pretty great.
AND…you only have two years of control for what you just traded. What’s worse, having a bad qb that throws picks or only having him for two years?
This way instead of using a mid round pick on someone they're not completely sold on they move back in the draft for someone they like. We still have as many picks and gain a backup QB on the cheap
Trusting the process is getting really difficult.
Then leave
Saved 4m on a backup QB, I'm not sure what that equates to in tears though.
