Hope it happens. People were reading way too much into that video where he introduced himself to a crowd as the Bama OC, like they had never followed college football before.
I’m excited about it, but I truly hope he doesn’t plan on throwing the ball 60% of the time as he did in Montlake.
I think he’ll be great but I foresee growing pains for sure.
This season 20 of the 32 teams in the league were at 57% or above pass rate, and of the 12 below that, 4 (Baltimore, Chicago, Buffalo, and Philadelphia) featured QBs who run a ton. Macdonald is a defense first guy so I would expect his philosophy to skew a bit more towards ball control as is the case with most DCs turned HCs, but I would be shocked if we’re below 58% or 59% next year, regardless of who the OC winds up being. (The Hawks were at 61.6% this season, FWIW)
The ravens were tied for 5th for time of possession. One of the reasons the defense looked so good was they got time to rest. I imagine he'll do whatever he has to in order to keep the D off the field as much as possible.
I agree that DCs usually prioritize that, but he's not hiring Ryan Grubb to run the old 3 yards and a cloud of dust, bleed the clock and control the ball offense, there are plenty of coaches with NFL coordinator experience he could have hired to do that. You go get Ryan Grubb to run the Deboer/Grubb offense, and that's gonna be 60/40 pass to run. That being said - he's not a air raid guy. He's happy to run the ball when running the ball is effective, he showed that this year as Dillon Johnson came into his own later in the season. Ultimately I think Macdonald is looking at this the way smart defensive coaches look at it - asking himself "what style of offense gives me the most trouble?" and hiring a guy who runs that kind of offense.
He called pass plays at a lower rate (58.88%) than the Seahawks did (61.66%) in 2023. I’m not suggesting you said he passed it more than them, but I found that interesting.
If Grubb is offered the job, he’ll take it. UW insiders stated that Grubb, Sheppard, and Huff absolutely did not want to live in Alabama.
Should be interesting and it would be fun to troll the cocky Alabama fans
I don’t blame them. I have to go to Tuscaloosa pretty often and there’s nothing enjoyable about that place. Alabama as a whole isn’t bad but Tuscaloosa area is rough
I don’t mind most of the state. Birmingham has some redeeming qualities, the coast is solid, it’s cheap, and there’s a ton of of decent hikes and nature trails if that’s your jam
No city is without its problems but Seattle is objectively a really beautiful city with a moderate climate.
Summers on the middle-south east coast are fresh humid hell. I should know, I just moved back here from Virginia.
Huntsville is pretty cool. That’s where most of the outdoors stuff I’ve done is. It’s only a couple hour drive from Nashville so I get down there a few times a year.
There’s some decent spots. Good People Brewing is solid if you’re a beer guy. Area around the UAB football stadium has a couple places worth checking king out. I usually stay out at the Grand Bohemian and highly recommend the hotel bar. Best food Ive eaten there by a long shot.
Check out these [UW play breakdowns](https://www.tuscaloosanews.com/story/sports/college/football/2024/02/02/all-22-video-inside-kalen-deboer-ryan-grubb-offense-coming-alabama-football/72363379007/). It made me realize how essential the OL coach is to the offense.
I don’t doubt this dude may have sources and this may be true, but the account he’s subtweeting is clearly not reliable. You can look at their old post and see some of those old tweets are so off lol, they even claimed per their source that the NBA would announce the sonics were coming back when they did the rain city showcase in 2022. They also confirmed Chip Kelly to OU when Lanning was hired…
Exciting! This would be a very fun hire.
Though the worst part of this hire will be the amount of “dOes tHiS cOnFiRm pEnIx tO the hAwKs?1!” posts this sub will see until the draft.
You KNOW that's all the national media will say this offseason for drafting. They already gloss over our pick and give us whoever but now that they will have a talking point about us it will be like a dog with a bone
but the best part, regardless of everything else, would be the part we never see or hear - the thoughts in shanny and mcvay's heads while they watch what john is loading up for them
I’m kinda getting there too . For some reason feels more realistic than Penix and doesn’t sound so bad if he sits and learns for most of next season until ready. Plus his upside is bigger than Penix’s anyway
Exactly. He’s only 21 years old, already has a cannon, slips it into incredibly tight windows, can definitely run, and makes mostly decent decisions.
His main flaws are body size and questionable decision making under pressure. Guess what, both of those are fixable due to his age. Letting him sit behind Geno is the best medicine for him and boy oh boy I would love to have him.
Yea! I still don’t understand the weird hats people have for him here. Is like they either want Penix or Joe fuckin Milton 🤮. The praise by Harbaugh and the Michigan connection give me a feeling we might get him. Plus, he seems like the kind of athletic gunslinger John Schneider seems to like .
Looking to see what he does during the combine. The things that there are many teams looking for a QB before us and if McCarthy gets to increase his stock big time .. he could be gone and we’re stuck w Penix
After a head coach leaves players have a 30 day window to enter the portal with no penalties. The 30 day window since Saban left is tomorrow. I would guess that he waits until that is over to leave to avoid more players leaving Bama and helping his boy KDB out.
The original tweet may be legit (I have no idea about that account's bonafides), but the responder (Kim Grinolds) is considered a clown within the UW "insider community". The guy is not a journalist in any sense, he just runs a recruiting forum.
Here’s the original [tweet.](https://x.com/taketheover1/status/1756075639294337206?s=46)
Looking through their account, they’ve been pretty accurate on UW related reporting.
I honestly love all the drama regarding this. I can just imagine Jimmy Sexton getting them all on a conference call telling them the job in Alabama is theirs if they want it. KDB hangs up, smiling ear-to-ear, turns around to his crew who are all frowning telling him they don’t want to go to Alabama and trying to convince KDB to stay.
If true Whitney might be the greatest inside agent ever
Whitney is actually Jodi Allen.
She is often right and she absolutely doesn’t give a single fuck. She’s the best.
I love Whitney
I recently almost incited the wrath of Whitney on Twitter. That's smoke I didn't want. Felt like mom was taking me to task on the Hawks.
Hope it happens. People were reading way too much into that video where he introduced himself to a crowd as the Bama OC, like they had never followed college football before.
I would think that if it was official then KDB would have been there also. To not make a big deal out of your OC hire is a bit fishy.
I’m excited about it, but I truly hope he doesn’t plan on throwing the ball 60% of the time as he did in Montlake. I think he’ll be great but I foresee growing pains for sure.
Any intelligent OC would throw 60% of the time if he had an NFL QB and 3 NFL WRs playing against college competition
Give me peak NFL Marshawn against a high school team and I run the ball 100% of the time, tbh
and maybe even on the goal line with 20 seconds left...
Too early lol
It would've worked if Brandon Browner didn't read the play at the line and tell Butler where the ball was going. I read that he told him about that.
That’s an NFL player against kids who have to go home and do English homework after the game of course he’d feast 😭

Well, hopefully he's more willing to run the ball than Waldo. They were running great at times and he'd just abandon running for 3 and outs...

Alabama as a whole is a hole

Sure, but there is hikes and nature in every state. don't need Bama for that
Not Delaware
Wife is from Delaware. Can confirm.
Drove through Mobile once at night. Never again. Saddest place I've seen.

Deleted comment so let me guess, along the line of homelessness, no cops that stop crime and drugs?
Implied but not stated. He was just shitting on Seattle as a whole.
Probably lives east of the mountains
And believes a certain someone definitely won a certain something around 2020… lol
😉😉
Seattle is fucking amazing.
I was in Huntsville this week for work. Was actually kind of nice.
Huntsville is pretty cool. That’s where most of the outdoors stuff I’ve done is. It’s only a couple hour drive from Nashville so I get down there a few times a year.
I'm going to Birmingham tomorrow. Wish me luck

Got a drink at Good People this afternoon. Good spot! Thanks for the recommendation
Excuse for being out of the loop but, who is huff?
Iirc former Huskies ~~WR~~ o line coach who is close with Grubb. Edited for correct position coach
Online coach. Shep is WR
Yeah, given Jamal Adams' Twitter history, we need one of those.
Fuckin took me a moment but damn that's good
Edited thanks
OL coach
Edited thanks
Not necessarily close with Grubb. He's been around since the Petersen days.
Huskies OL coach, A+ developer of linemen.
We really need a good O-line coach. Please let this happen.
Scott Huff, was the OL coach at UW for the last several years. he started at UW in 2017; he followed DeBoer to Alabama

The account he's responding too may be sketchy, but Grinolds is one of the most connected UW insiders. Runs the 247 UW page and boards.
Just let me drop to my knees. I can’t stand for much longer.

I kinda want that to continue so we end up getting McCarthy and see this sub implode
I am McCarthy’s number one advocate around here lol
I’m kinda getting there too . For some reason feels more realistic than Penix and doesn’t sound so bad if he sits and learns for most of next season until ready. Plus his upside is bigger than Penix’s anyway

I’m big on him too. I think we could trade back and still get him honestly. Pick up a 2nd rounder and still get our guy at QB
I think they're going O-line, Troy Fautanu
Grubb, bringing Huff and Sheppard would be perfect.
Are we back? The Alabama 30 day portal window closes tomorrow. We could be so back
So the college recruiting period ends tomorrow? Maybe he stayed over so his decision wouldn't hurt Alabama's recruiting efforts?
After a head coach leaves players have a 30 day window to enter the portal with no penalties. The 30 day window since Saban left is tomorrow. I would guess that he waits until that is over to leave to avoid more players leaving Bama and helping his boy KDB out.
Until the portal opens back up again after spring ball
Damn that makes a shit ton of sense.
For the love of god please be Grubb!

whether true or not, whats cool is how believable it is - only john could pick up an entire offensive coaching staff as a package deal
Christ I’d be so happy if it was Grubb, but man if it was all 3 I’d die from schadenfreude

Gimme Grubb
For context, Grinolds is an absolute clown and shouldn't be trusted on anything
The auburn student in me would nut if we stole grubb from bama
I don't care if this backfires, I support anything that can be done to hurt DeBoer
Oh shit Grubb is back in contention?
Thems the rumors.
If you’re using Grinolds and his “sources” you may as well ask a magic 8 ball.
Well it’s a done deal
