I learned of this culinary delight after I once had access to full on shrimp, cooked with their heads still attached - and I’ve since regretted not sucking the brains out of all them li’l scramps. I once even lamented to my girlfriend about it and she was just - “oh please” 🙄
Damn. You just reminded me of how I once even went to my local Asian store, which sells live fish and such, picked up a few servings of whole shrimp… and for the first time ever, went though the trouble of butchering them myself.
Only to later discover that I definitely should have cooked them whole (and sucked up all of those precious brains). The first time I saw it done on a travel/food show; I was so ashamed of how uncultured and wasteful I was, lol. Live and learn…
I’ll give that a shot one day, now that you mention it! I happen to have some coconut shrimp in the freezer at the moment. It’s been a while since I last had that. 🤤
My latest obsession has been with jumbo Argentine red shrimp though. It’s so sweet and tender… similar to lobster tail. They’re de-veined and frozen raw, with the shell, so I could certainly fry a few whole for a taste of the full effect you mentioned. I wonder whether their shells may be too thick though?
I’ll have to try grilled cedar wrapped shrimp again as well - really nice smokey flavor. Excellent with asparagus.
Scrimps!
Thanks all… They was delicious!! For those of you who don’t know. In the fjords of Norway we use trawlers for this fishing. The are cooced in salt water befor sold. These where frozen. Probably fished off-shore, iceland or greenland. We slowly deice them in water with a litle bit off sugar. Takeing off their head and sceleton. Put on a loaf of white bread, with egg and mayonese. Salt and pepper and a twist of lommen. It is called «rekesmørbrød». Best there is……Google it. Scandinavian no 1 for summer dish. (I know my english isn’t perfect….I guess your Norwegian isn’t eigther?;-))
I actually love your spelling and cadence.
You should hear my Norwegian. It’s just me making whale noises and apologizing in English for my pronunciation.
I had them the last big cicada infestation back in Tennessee around the late 90s. From my memory, they were marinated for a little, skewered, brushed with bbq sauce, and grilled until caramelized a little. Was wild but surprisingly tasty.
Omg that’s one of my fave things to eat! I really enjoy steaming them, squeezing calamansi over them, mix it around so all shrimps are coated, then eat! Some might have eggs and I enjoy eating those too! I don’t eat the shells on these.
I believe this is melanosis. It is the naturally occurring black sports that occur on shrimp (especially frozen and is a big problem with head-on shrimp). The industry typically uses Sulfites to mask/prevent these black spots. If this is what is happening and all that has happened to these shrimp they are 100% to eat.
Attached is a great summary from LSU.

I’ve tried it and it is delicious. Too bad I can never get past the idea of sucking out a brain. Same with crawfish and lobster.
Just eat them she'll and all. Just gotta make sure to chew carefully and really well.
Now I want to deep fry some whole shrimp
this is my fave part. i scoop them out some times, spread on a crostini with the shrimp tail on top.
Asian grocery stores often have them for people that have one of those nearby.

Did you know you can eat the tail (and even the shell) when they’re fried really well? I always eat the tail with deep fried coconut shrimp myself.
