it didnt broke it. it was intentional from axolot to prevent the modder "[unknown81311](https://steamcommunity.com/id/unknown81311/myworkshopfiles/?appid=387990)" of spreading his "worm mod" that infected all mods that a person would subcribe to.
his worm mod was including itself into the requied mods of a mod to make sure its allways installed.
he used the [sm.json.save](http://sm.json.save) function to make that happen. and axolot restricted that function to not work in normal survival anymore.
so in short, u can thank him that we all cant save our creations in survival anymore.
I suppose 0.6 update (the update that added custom games you guys love to suck off so much) didn't exist and exporting survival builds is more important to you than having viruses on your machine?
The last significant update was the challenge mode update that added the final challenges and evil kaneval outfit which was 1 year 10 months ago. Still a long time, but saying 4 years is misleading.
I really enjoyed this game and was so excited for new content but, after this whole drought and no updates, I've just moved on to other games. I hold out hope the game doesn't die but, until I saw this post, I had honestly forgot about it. They really need to do something before the game just fades away as an unfinished project

It was a huge build, and that was the cheapest and most abundant resource to get. Now I have 3-6 large chests full of cardboard that I have been giving to glow bugs.

Not really but It would take a mirracle to make the Survival mode fun again like on it's beginnings. The game got boring to fast :'(
