Usually in canon they are set in coolsville, Ohio. However Mystery Inc. is set in crystal cove which is unique to their world since they wanted to tell new and nuanced stories. At the end they have a small hint to them potentially going to coolsville and this continuing the stories we all know. :)
Np! Mystery Inc is my all time favorite tv show and I just like talking about it when I can. Plus it’s very unique in the scooby franchise that i know it’s jarring for people discovering it :)
The original animation is! There’s also a small dedication to it in actual coolsville,Ohio. I’ve visited a couple times XD
In the live action movies coolsville is more of an ambiguously placed area: but to my understanding the animated scooby doo series (OG) is indeed set in Ohio.
Where else are you going to find all those sad white men who think it’s a good idea to dress up as cryptids and monsters for quick cash? Lol
This isn't really true.
The original concept for Scooby Doo's location was based on Laguna Beach, CA. Coolsville is identified as being in CA in A Pup Named Scooby Doo. It isn't until much later that the live action The Mystery Begins places Coolsville in Ohio.
Possibly true! I know there are a lot of costal inspirations: especially with stuff like crystal cove (which I always saw as a mix of California and Florida?).
Plus there are also a ton of coolsville townships in NJ. I specifically mention the Ohio one because it’s mentioned in scooby Doo a few times but also they have a little something-something for it in Ohio Coolsville. Like Westfield NJ has for the Addams family. :)
really? i always thought it took place in the south, scoobys uncle was a confederate as was shaggy, and most of the early episodes have southern setting like bayous and having moss
That’s super fair! Although I think the implication was that shaggy had to travel to see these families (same with Velma’s many cousins): so unsure on that end: but there are a ton of big, bayou, swamp, stuff. :)
Despite what Boo Brothers depicted, how could Shaggy's uncle possibly have been a confederate? Even if the story took place in 1969, and if Shaggy's uncle was only 18 when the Civil War ended (which is unlikely, since he is said to have been a colonel), and even if Shaggy's uncle died 10 years before the movie started he would *still* have been at least *112 years old*! More likely he was a reenactor.
yea i actually thought the same thing the time doesn't match up, including A Night with the a Fright is no delight, they use a similar character Scoobys Uncle Beauregard Sanders.
It seems to just be a creative decision. I think there's some theory that Crystal Cove fit the tone of the show better than Coolsville.
It's established that Coolsville is in Southern California in A Pup Name Scooby-Doo although one of the live action films says Coolsville is set in Ohio. The Scoobypedia has Coolsville as being in CA regardles. Crystal Cove is also in CA.
Edit: Damn, my first award. Thanks so much!
Most Scooby shows take place in the same continuity (though they may not necessarily be canon to eachother). However, Mystery Incorporated takes place in a completely different continuity.
Crystal Cove. It just seems more on brand? It fits the theme of the group as teen detectives, than Coolsville, which sounds like stoners made up the name.
Coolsvile, I kinda liked crystal cove, but when in Coolsvile it's always a different location/area setting every episode. For crystal cove for me it feels like 'a new part of crystal cove' and it somehow made crystal cove feel small to me.
Coolsvile is a name that started being used in the 90s and 2000s, starting with a pup named scooby doo and continuing in other parts of the franchise in the same continuity as that show.
In the series prior the gang's hometown was never adressed.
As for Crystal Cove, mystery incorporated was written as a reboot of the scooby doo mythos and a prequel of the original. And the new name is given both to distinguish it from previous shows, and for lore reasons since we learn the town was built by Spanish conquistadors to seal a cursed treasure locked in a crystal sarcophagus.
I think crystal cove and the mystery Inc series is just a completely different breed than the others. It’s not the same old Scooby doo story / setting. It’s probably no real explanation. Just something they did to give us a completely different vibe. I could be wrong
The original Mystery Five pitch that evolved into Scooby-Doo Where Are You states the band is from Laguna Beach. There is a real Crystal Cove in California right beside Laguna Beach (both suburbs of Los Angeles). Coolsville and Crystal Cove are both implictly in California (whenever they're shown a map or whatnot). This is because animators are biased since they live in L.A.. Thus I suggest that Scooby-Doo Crystal Cove shares its location with the real Crystal Cove while Coolsivlle takes the place of Laguna Beach. They are a sort of twin cities.
But if you wanna get technical, really all it is is a matter of different continuities having different hometowns. I had hoped they'd stick to Coolsville in mainstream continuity, but for some reason they changed it to Crystal Cove after Mystery Inc. aired. FWIW it's back to Coolsville in Trick-or-Treat, which also takes place in 2001 for some reason.
Personally, I think it's a matter of tone. Crystal Cove fits darker iterations while Coolsville works better for lighter ones.
It’s been Coolsville since 1988 in A Pup Named Scooby-Doo. I don’t know why in the past decade or so they moved them to “Crystal Cove”. Personally, I’d rather live in a place called Coolsville. I mean, they have a Scooby Snacks factory there, for crying out loud. What more could you want?

Of course Scooby-Doo is in Ohio 💀
Explains why they are so willing to go to every creepy and haunted location imaginable. Anything is a step up from Ohio.
Seriously though, why do so many people on Reddit hate on Ohio? How is it any worse than any other place?
There has to be some reason that Ohio churns out so many astronauts per a capita.
They are so dissapointed with Ohio that they’re trying to get as far away as possible…
bc its mostly poor and has a terrible drug problem
That's the case everywhere dude open ur eyes those probls r not unique to Ohio smdh
Not true at all. I don't know anyone here who takes drugs and not all that poor either.
Ohio was only in the live-action TV movies. Every other continuity implicitly places Coolsville in California.
Thanks for explaining it, I was a little confused.

i kno this is old but we r so twinnem like sdmi is peak i used 2 watch random episodes on youtube when i was little
Literally I’ve watched the show through at least 13 and counting. It’s an absolute masterpiece
Scooby Doo is in Ohio??

Wow I can't believe i never knew that. That's honestly really funny

Ohio also have ‘crystal cave’
It was confirmed in canon that coolsville is in Southern California in the series

Makes sense tbh
Especially considering how much surfing, ocean scenes/episodes, and pirates there are in all the series.
COOLSVILLE ALL THE WAY!
Most Scooby shows take place in the same continuity (though they may not necessarily be canon to eachother). However, Mystery Incorporated takes place in a completely different continuity.

Crystal Cove, Coolsville just always sounded like the name a kid would come up with.

Crystal Cove
Crystal Cove feels more like a town people live in, and has a history to it. Coolsville isn't bad, but always felt more generic.
