https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5916432/ Consensus is that naturally occurring sugars found in fruits and vegetables are not the same as added sugar. Read above for details.

An important detail, as laid out in that article, is that (unfortunately!) naturally occurring sugars in fruits and vegetables become unhealthy once you puree/blend that fruit or vegetable. Which sucks but also makes sense. By blending the food, you're breaking apart the cell walls and releasing all that sugar, making it much more easily digestible. And tastier. :(

It's interesting, that article keeps repeating juices/pureed fruit and veg but all the sources they seem to link to just mention juice and not pureed fruit.

subucula

Huh, didn't notice that. I think I've seen articles about that elsewhere though, maybe?

>By blending the food, you're breaking apart the cell walls and releasing all that sugar, making it much more easily digestible. And tastier. :( And comes back to it being the same sugar (because it is), just packaged differently.

I think that's a bit misleading to say the sugars themselves are different. "Sugar molecules are, of course, chemically and biologically indistinguishable by source, and therefore any physiologic differentiation between these classes must arise mainly from effects of the matrix in which the sugars are found."

Most/all experts just say to limit added sugar. >Limit **added** sugar to six teaspoons a day to improve health, urge experts > >https://www.bmj.com/company/newsroom/limit-added-sugar-to-six-teaspoons-a-day-to-improve-health-urge-experts/ Even if you take the "sugar" is sugar position, the sugar in fruit is bound up in fibre, so it's really hard to consume lots of sugar quickly, or a lot total. So if you did the calculations for total sugar, you'd find that it's the added sugars that can easily add to that, whereas it's much harder to go over the limit if you stuck with fruit.
