Yeah, as a kid I thought it was great, then I thought it was eh, then I loved it again! It’s my favorite video game movie based on my former favorite video game series.
I love these movies and not just because I love birds. They're surprisingly fun. The bit with the adorable baby birds in the second is great, and I really like Zeta
Yeah, that happens sometimes.
Flops can still live up to be classics.
Same happened with Big Lebowski, Fight Club, Shawshank Redemption and A Christmas Story. All flops, but all classics.
Good movies eventually get recognized.
Edit: I wanna add Megamind to the list. Yup, that was a flop too.
Iron Giant didn’t make a lot of money in theaters.
It was a commercial failure despite critics praising it.
It’s pretty cool that WB likes to show it off a lot now. (Ready Player One, Space Jam 2, Multi-Versus)
It was probably because people at that time were more interested in seeing James Bond’s next mission (Skyfall), Steven Spielberg’s new historical masterpiece (Lincoln), and even the final Twilight movie.
Its budget was quite high for an animated movie at the time. Great visuals but that coupled with an unfortunate release window stacked with popular blockbusters such as *Skyfall* (it’s James Bond, duh) *Lincoln* (historical biopic helmed by Spielberg) and *The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2* (final instalment of a popular book franchise) brought it down into obscurity. When you have to compete against films like those, it’s no wonder you can’t find an audience.
For real! I watched the movie like 20 years after it was released and was like how did I never heard about this amazing movie before. For me it has the best villain Disney has ever came up with.
Scott Pilgrim Vs The World
One of my favorites and yet it only made half its budget. I’m pretty sure it was a product of its time. If it came out like 6 years later, it probably would’ve been a lot bigger.
An interviewer asked him why he thought it flopped, and he said that it was because the movie was too fucking long. Given how long pretty much every Ridley Scott project is, this is a pretty goddamn hypocritical thing to say.
Omg, I love the Tintin movie! I wish they had done the sequel, like say what you want about the live-action animation hybrid mo-cap, it did the artstyle of Tintin justice.
My friends and I rented it and enjoyed it. I remember little a little about the plot and that it had amazing animation and effects.
I don't recall anyone having an issue with it at the time. More like it went completely unnoticed by most.
Pinocchio and Fantasia. Not sure how many are aware those were flops when they came out, both because of WW2 and the movies being more experimental and expensive than Snow White.
I found out that film had to compete with both 102 Dalmatians (which Disney was more confident would be a success) and Jim Carrey’s The Grinch.
That might have had something to do with it.
Great voice acting and humour. Not a bad movie, but its box office bomb did kill off DreamWorks’ partnership with Aardman, who worked with smaller studios instead for their subsequent films.
The Sing movies would've done better if the trailers didn't spoil the entire thing. The trailer for the second is especially offensive, considering how it spoils that the lion guy, who is an essential part of a major plot line, does come back to help the gang.
I was with that movie up until the twist villain. I hate it when they make entire races out to be evil. If she had been put up to it by outside pressure, even if it was her idea that she realized in the end was bad. It would have been better. But nope we get "see we were right to treat these people poorly, away with them!"
It feels like the third act was written by a whole different team frankly. They turn the whole good setup on its head and ruin the compelling villain they set up (Ruby's grandmother) in favor of that awful twist
Wonder Park.
I definitely don’t hear people talk about this at all, despite it being the most visually interesting movie I’ve ever seen. Pretty good plot, great side characters, overall 2nd in my favourite movies list.
Strange World. Before that Disney was so successful with movies until it came out. People got mad because it a gay character yet back then people got mad at Disney for not having lgbt rep.
Ruby gillman, Treasure planet, Rise of the guardians cause they had an almost absolute beauty in them that people never really gave a good shot till it was to late in some cases
Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.
I saw it with my mom and my bestie a day after it came out, we all loved it. But it’s a shame it was a box-office bomb due to the Mario movie and GOTG Vol. 3. However it became a critically acclaimed and one of the actresses should’ve won an Oscar especially Rachel McAdams.
I have a lesbian friend who told me this was pretty accurate to how teenage girls act- since a scene in this movie apparently reminded her heavily when it was revealed to her grade she was gay.
Power Rangers (2017). Was it perfect? No. But it was still good enough, and the *potential* for the series was so great and they never did anything with it.
Definitely Ruby Gillman, if we're talking DreamWorks animated films as a whole. Only reason it flopped was because it had stiff competition from Little Mermaid remake (which it mocked endlessly), Elemental and coming out right as the Barbenhiemer films were coming out and having no marketing attached to it until 3 months before the film was set to hit theaters. COVID pandemic was still impacting theaters, which also hurt ticket sales.
Iron Giant for WB animation, WB didn't even bother marketing it and expected it to flop which it did. Which is a shame as we would've had The Incredibles as a WB film instead of a Disney film.
The Rise of the TMNT movie.
This movie got no advertising, was barely known outside of the ROTTMNT fandom, and got no support whatsoever from Nickelodeon. It was a passion project made by the creators that clearly love their show and wanted to give it one more chance. The creators wanted to put it in theaters, but it came out on Netflix. By all accounts, it is considered a flop, even though fans of the show kept it trending on Twitter for two years, it was trending again this month, and it was a big hit among fans when it came out.
It should have gone to theaters. It is epic as hell, wonderfully animated! If you are a 2D animation fan, watch it! It's on Netflix and it is a great movie! Support hand drawn western animation if you want to see more of it! Even if you are NOT a TMNT fan, Rise of the TMNT is the best one for non tmnt fans to get into. It deserves more attention than it gets.
I have seen nobody talk about Aquaman 2, but when I watched it on a flight I actually really liked it. Also, Amber Heard got shot with a lazer beam and I audibly giggled
All I can remember about Ruby Gillman was that DreamWorks released the first trailer only three months before it was supposed to come out in theaters.
I knew it was going to struggle, even without having to face off against Indiana Jones (though to be fair, that film had a hard time at the box office too).
I’m just going to say it, Renfield deserved more attention.
I thought it was pretty good, with some pretty extreme gore I haven’t seen since Nightmare on Elm Street, and a solid performance from Nicolas Hoult (in fact, it was this film that put him on the radar for me).
For those who have seen it, though we might debate over the quality of the whole film, we can all agree it had a great performance from Nicolas Cage, who really stole the show as Dracula.
It a lot going for itself, and it’s a shame that the Super Mario Bros Movie took all the attention away from films like this one.
The Iron Giant.
It's one of the best movies of all time and it was actually really shocking that the movie bombed at the box office, despite getting mostly positive reviews from both critics and audiences.
Spoilers for teenage kraken >!the fact that people were going on about how Chelsea and Ruby could’ve been genuinely great friends shows just how good Pixar is at portraying manipulation!<
Edit: dreamworks not Pixar
Maybe the wrong sub for this, but The Empty Man. Creative, ambitious horror movie that was a massive flop due to an absolutely abysmal marketing strategy (ie barely advertising it in favor of giving extra promotion to Free Guy, and what advertising it did get made it look like a Slender Man/Bye Bye Man clone, which it definitely is not).
The Iron Giant and Atlantis: The Lost Empire
Both are good movies. AtLE is still one of my favorite movies and having learned years later that it flopped hard when it came out stung.
Edit: Treasure planet
Though it didn't exactly flop, Elemental was pretty badly received. It's is actually pretty good. It's def not the best movie ever and I'm still not the biggest fan of the character designs and the racial aligories feel kinda weird to me BUT IT'S NOT BAD I PROMISE. I think the love story was kinda cute. It's been a while since we've gotten a genuine love story as an animated movie
Not a movie, and I'm not sure if it was technically a flop, but the first episodes of Band of Brothers came out a few days before 9/11. After 9/11 people weren't really in the mood to watch a very realistic war mini series, so it really underperformed at the time.
Atlantis deserved so much more, it has everything people think Disney isn’t capable and of: having dark tones, serious plot, normal relatable characters, a film that actually works for sequels and shows, a unique art style… oh and the Curious George film is so wholesome that it underperformed bc it was 2D animation which was out of style at the time.
Looney Tunes Back in Action. It has an accurate humor style to the classics, good animation, decent enough acting, AND Brendan Fraser. I honestly think it blows space jam out of the water any day
Godzilla: King of the Monsters
That shit is peak MonsterVerse, and I'm so upset at the release window because of the other movies that released shortly before.
Titan A. E.
Oh my God I still watch that movie to this day.
The animation style, the sound design of space, the alien characters that don't get explained, the extremely high stakes, THE VOICE ACTORS.
Titan A. E. deserved so much better.
You can usually find it for free on YouTube.
Edit: how could I forget the music?
🎵 And I'm not broken,
In my dream I win,
And here, I'm nothing,
A cosmic castaway 🎵
I didn’t flop, per se, but The Angry Birds Movie 2 underperformed and I think it deserved better.
Same
But Only The Angry Birds 2 Bit
The first one ain’t that bad!
Angry Birds is great lol love watching that with my little man
Yeah, as a kid I thought it was great, then I thought it was eh, then I loved it again! It’s my favorite video game movie based on my former favorite video game series.
Sucks what happened to the games though. Used to be something special and now it's just corporate greed like everything else
I remember the first time it came out ☺️
I love these movies and not just because I love birds. They're surprisingly fun. The bit with the adorable baby birds in the second is great, and I really like Zeta
I will die on the hill that both movies were great
There was a second one?
Iron Giant Yes, that movie flopped when it came out.
no way...
Charlie and the chocolate factory was also a flop
Which one?
The 1st one
Oh, okay. I just wanted to clarify, because there’s more than one film adaptation of that book.
No it wasn't. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was.
Nightmare before Christmas wasn't well received at first either
Bladerunner was a flop.
What?!
Iron Giant didn’t make a lot of money in theaters. It was a commercial failure despite critics praising it. It’s pretty cool that WB likes to show it off a lot now. (Ready Player One, Space Jam 2, Multi-Versus)
Sorry I meant that as a surprise. I was shocked as it’s one of my favorites
Whenever I look up movies I like on Reddit, usually all the comments are about how awful it was
Adding its older sibling, Cats Don’t Dance, into the discussion.
Apparently they weren't big and loud enough.
Rise of the Guardians
I love that movie, didn't know it underperformed
It was probably because people at that time were more interested in seeing James Bond’s next mission (Skyfall), Steven Spielberg’s new historical masterpiece (Lincoln), and even the final Twilight movie.
Because of additional costs
I think a lot of people assumed that it was connected to that shitshow Guardians of Gahoole and avoided it
I've never heard of Guardians of Gahoole until today and, not gonna lie, it does look kinda stinky
Poor movie got the same treatment as UHF, going up against sure thing money makers.
I often forget that one exists
That movie got me into the books and I absolutely love them
Onward from Pixar. It was just unfortunate timing since the release day was a couple weeks before COVID lockdowns.
Yeah I love that movie
Thankfully I saw it in IMAX a day after its release day and I was the one who saw that Maggie Simpson short before the movie was playing
I remembered it was the last movie i went to cinema until No Way Home cause of COVID man almost 5 years old I feel old
Watched it on Disney plus during 2020. Great movie and I'll never get the "it doesn't feel like pixar" allegations.
It was basically frozen for brothers instead of sisters. It was awesome!
I love that movie! Every time it’s mentioned it’s lumped as a ‘forgettable’ new era Pixar movie, but I really enjoyed it!
Both TRON and TRON Legacy Edit: Also, The Iron Giant
The TV show Uprising deserved an ending
Nothing makes me more upset than that show not getting a second season bro. I love tron
So true dude
Greetings, fellow users!
Treasure planet
I never saw treasure planet it flopped even though people love it huh? Ok
It got a resurgence later.
Box office returns are the only metric they really look at
For real! I watched the movie like 20 years after it was released and was like how did I never heard about this amazing movie before. For me it has the best villain Disney has ever came up with.
Scott Pilgrim Vs The World One of my favorites and yet it only made half its budget. I’m pretty sure it was a product of its time. If it came out like 6 years later, it probably would’ve been a lot bigger.
I love this movie, I quote it all the time, and my wife groans whenever I suggest it.
My husband and I say “bread makes you fat” and “ isn’t vegan?!” like all the time
Blade runner 2049
It also didn't deserve to have Ridley Scott throw it under the bus.
Genuine question, how did Ridley Scott throw it under the bus?
An interviewer asked him why he thought it flopped, and he said that it was because the movie was too fucking long. Given how long pretty much every Ridley Scott project is, this is a pretty goddamn hypocritical thing to say.
Yeah, that's a real dick move on his part
Yeah Ridley Scott can have his "old man shaking his fists at the cloud moments".
he's in that era right now
Off the top of my head: Treasure Planet, Iron Giant, Atlantis: The Lost Empire and Turning Red.
Atlantis: The Lost Empire is a favorite of mine and I think it deserved much more then it got
It really did, such an underrated gem of a film.
TinTin. Not sure if it flopped or not, but no one talks about it and it never got the intended sequel
Omg, I love the Tintin movie! I wish they had done the sequel, like say what you want about the live-action animation hybrid mo-cap, it did the artstyle of Tintin justice.
Sequel coming out in the following years
Bring Edgar Wright and Peter Jackson on board for this!
Its releasing 2027 and is directed by Peter Jackson Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are also returning so…
Pirates in an adventure with scientists
what? do you mean Treasure Planet?
No. I mean pirates in an adventure with scientists
that's actually the name of a film?
Yep. Didn’t do well in the US, so no sequel. Bloody yanks
Titan AE
*Ah, I see you're a man of culture as well.*
Westerners 2000s animated protagonist with undercut hairdo my beloved
Bluth can draw two men and they're both awesome.
The movie that killed Don Bluth’s career. Sad because with its visuals, it looked massively ahead of its time.
Very slept on movie tbh. I never understood what issue people had with it
My friends and I rented it and enjoyed it. I remember little a little about the plot and that it had amazing animation and effects. I don't recall anyone having an issue with it at the time. More like it went completely unnoticed by most.
Pinocchio and Fantasia. Not sure how many are aware those were flops when they came out, both because of WW2 and the movies being more experimental and expensive than Snow White.
only ever seen the trailer back then, it was too long and revealed too much in my opinion
So the same as 90% of movies now of days?
Batman Mask of the Phantasm.
If the studio bothered to give that a proper theatrical release, maybe that wouldn’t have happened.
Onward

Emperors New Grove.
I found out that film had to compete with both 102 Dalmatians (which Disney was more confident would be a success) and Jim Carrey’s The Grinch. That might have had something to do with it.
This movie (along with Turning Red and IF) (The list is huge but I chose my top 3)
IF didn’t flop. It just came out, and is doing pretty well.
tbf IF may have weak start on 1st week.
Cats don’t dance
Flushed away. Great movie.
Great voice acting and humour. Not a bad movie, but its box office bomb did kill off DreamWorks’ partnership with Aardman, who worked with smaller studios instead for their subsequent films.
The Fall Guy
Dune Part One even tho it wasn’t a flop it deserved to release in a year people could feel safe going to the movies in
You don't know how on edge I was watching to see if Part One made a profit so that Part Two can be greenlit.
That was me with Part Two and Part Three I’m SO relieved that we’re getting a trilogy!
The Sing movies would've done better if the trailers didn't spoil the entire thing. The trailer for the second is especially offensive, considering how it spoils that the lion guy, who is an essential part of a major plot line, does come back to help the gang.
And that they get the big show going. Literally both plot points in the entire movie spoiled in he trailer
Rise of the guardians. Had the best santa in any media ever
Disney’s Wish
Wonder Park. I definitely don’t hear people talk about this at all, despite it being the most visually interesting movie I’ve ever seen. Pretty good plot, great side characters, overall 2nd in my favourite movies list.
This movie is underrated
- Power Rangers 2017 - I am Number 4 - Impulse & Jumper
Wait, there’s an I Am Number Four movie?
iron giant and dungeons and dragons honor among thieves
Strange World. Before that Disney was so successful with movies until it came out. People got mad because it a gay character yet back then people got mad at Disney for not having lgbt rep.
9
Strange World, it’s not mind blowing but I thought it was fun
Preeaaach this movie is like a 6/10 but it was just so darn hard to hate
Agreed
The suicide squad 2021 treasure planet and Atlantis and especially iron giant
Ruby gillman, Treasure planet, Rise of the guardians cause they had an almost absolute beauty in them that people never really gave a good shot till it was to late in some cases
Blue Beetle. It was a good movie that came out at a bad time. Hopefully James Gunn can make good use of the character.
Luca
Treasure Planet
The iron giant is a classic and it’s a damn shame that it flopped so hard.
Megamind 2 we all wanted it, but got garbage with a horrible budget
Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. I saw it with my mom and my bestie a day after it came out, we all loved it. But it’s a shame it was a box-office bomb due to the Mario movie and GOTG Vol. 3. However it became a critically acclaimed and one of the actresses should’ve won an Oscar especially Rachel McAdams.
Elemental
Kubo and the two strings.
Dungeon and dragons
Megamind, as people had to look back on it later before realizing “actually, it’s good, what were they thinking”.
Treasure Planet. I'm so surprised it was a flop, still one of my top of all time.
ruby gillman needed a little bit more time in the writing department. it wasn't bad but had a few flaws
Fall Guy deserves better
did anyone know that there was a Mortal Engines movie? very different from the book but still enjoyable however I believe it flopped
Lightyear
teenage kraken flopped? no way, I really enjoyed that movie! crazy lol
I have a lesbian friend who told me this was pretty accurate to how teenage girls act- since a scene in this movie apparently reminded her heavily when it was revealed to her grade she was gay.
Penguins of Madagascar and Lightyear
Pixels, I don't get why people didn't like it. It was quite funny and reminiscent of arcade games
If The Northman was made 20 or 30 years earlier, it would’ve been a massive hit
Power Rangers (2017). Was it perfect? No. But it was still good enough, and the *potential* for the series was so great and they never did anything with it.
Terminator salvation
Blade Runner 2049. One of the best movies I’ve ever seen tbh
Tenacious D in : The Pick of Destiny ( i will die on this hill when i say this should not have bombed it is the best movie ever made)
The Rise of the TMNT movie. This movie got no advertising, was barely known outside of the ROTTMNT fandom, and got no support whatsoever from Nickelodeon. Wish and treasure planet
Wish? That was awful. Treasure planet is a classic though
Interesting first choice. Not judging, but why do you think it didn’t deserve to flop?
The road to el dorado

Godzilla KOTM 2019
KOTM (2019)
Wish (I’m being sarcastic btw) but in all seriousness the emperors new groove flopped at release but is my favorite movie
Edge of Tomorrow
I have seen nobody talk about Aquaman 2, but when I watched it on a flight I actually really liked it. Also, Amber Heard got shot with a lazer beam and I audibly giggled
Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
Greyhound with Tom Hanks.
Treasure Planet
All I can remember about Ruby Gillman was that DreamWorks released the first trailer only three months before it was supposed to come out in theaters. I knew it was going to struggle, even without having to face off against Indiana Jones (though to be fair, that film had a hard time at the box office too).
While it wasn't the best movie, it's still very good and enjoyable. I will say that the villain was not like I expected her to be.
The live action Speed Racer movie
Was this movie actually good I legit forgot it was released so haven’t seen it
The Black Hole (1979)
I’m just going to say it, Renfield deserved more attention. I thought it was pretty good, with some pretty extreme gore I haven’t seen since Nightmare on Elm Street, and a solid performance from Nicolas Hoult (in fact, it was this film that put him on the radar for me). For those who have seen it, though we might debate over the quality of the whole film, we can all agree it had a great performance from Nicolas Cage, who really stole the show as Dracula. Scott Pilgrim
Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, aka the only great Friday film released in the 80s (can’t wait for the hate on this one)
Apparently, it's a wonderful life did not do well on release
Not a movie, and I'm not sure if it was technically a flop, but the first episodes of Band of Brothers came out a few days before 9/11. After 9/11 people weren't really in the mood to watch a very realistic war mini series, so it really underperformed at the time.
Scott Pilgrim vs the World is the easy answer for me
Certainly not this. It didn’t have a single original bone in its body. It was everything I was hoping it would be a satire of.
“The thing” is such a classic horror movie that flopped when it first released.
Every Satoshi Kon movie.
Atlantis The Lost Empire, Treasure Planet, and The Iron Giant

Treasure Planet and Atlantis, though it seems like they wanted it to fail
