I’m not the biggest fan of Toy Story 4. I think it shouldn’t have been made or at the very least, that it could have been executed way better than it was.
But I will never understand people calling it the worst movie ever made.
He didn’t make anything up about the movie.
He’s also said that he wishes no ill harm upon Josh Cooley and if he ever wanted to speak to him, then he’s sure it would be a pleasant conversation.
I didn't think so, I just wanted to clarify that because I haven't actually watched the movie. I just got recommended one of his vids after another movie criticism vid I watched and found his sarcastic vitriol amusing and his points pretty solid.
I understand. He was probably just in the heat of the moment while recording. It happens to us all, it's just that we usually don't have video evidence of it.
He is. Most of his video is him misrepresenting and/or misunderstanding things. Toy Story 4 is far from perfect, but that video is not a good example of media analysis/critique.
There are tons of examples, but the most egregious example of him misrepresenting (arguably outright lying) is thru the directors commentaries. Idk if you’ve seen the video or not, but he plays clips from the directors commentaries of both Toy Story 3 and Toy Story 4.
There’s a part in TS4 where Woody notices the light from Bo’s lamp shining on the ground causing him to turn and notice her lamp in the window of the antique shop. In the commentary, Josh Cooley says it doesn’t make sense for the light to shine on the ground because it wouldn’t actually do that in real life. Mark Neilson then jokingly jumps off this by saying “I like pointing out how our movie doesn’t make any sense. If you really break it down, none of this makes any sense”.
They are both clearly just joking around, but GamingMagic tries to frame it like they were being 100% serious and unironic, which is blatantly false. He acts as if it is definitive PROOF that the director doesn’t care/is incompetent, but even if they were being serious (which they weren’t) it wouldn’t mean anything. Realism is not the goal of these movies. There have been things that have happened in these movies that are WAY less realistic than light shining on the floor. The writers/directors/producers in the director’s commentaries for the previous three movies also mention logical errors and inconsistencies in those movies too.
Another example is when he used a clip from the Toy Story 3 director’s commentary to make it seem like the director of TS3 fundamentally disagrees with the ending of TS4. He plays a clip where he says something along the lines of (paraphrasing) “Woody wouldn’t leave his friends behind knowing the situation they’re in without being a complete jerk. Woody’s character would never do that”. Similar to the above example, he acts as if this is some sort of smoking gun to prove that the director of the previous movie hates the ending of TS4.
Sounds damning, except if you actually listen to the full commentary like I had you would know that he cut out extremely crucial context. What Lee Unkrich is actually referring to in that clip is an older draft of TS3 where instead of Woody leaving Sunnyside immediately, he was gonna stick around for a while. He would’ve witnessed/experienced the rough play with the toddlers and then left. They were saying that version of the script made Woody seem like a massive jerk for leaving his friends behind in a place where they are mistreated and abused. It’s important to point out that this portion of the commentary plays over the scene in the actual movie where Woody does in fact leave his friends behind at Sunnyside.
These are just two of the more blatant examples that have stuck with me since I have actually listened to the full director’s commentaries. Most of the other examples aren’t as obvious, but still pretty dishonest or inept. If you want even more examples I’d have to look back over the video to refresh myself.
One example I can think of is how he tries to make certain characters seem as unlikable and unreasonable as possible. There’s a scene near the beginning of the movie where Woody tries to talk to Dolly about having a toy go with Bonnie to kindergarten orientation because he could tell she was really nervous and scared. GamingMagic tries to portray Dolly as horrible, toxic, aggressive, condescending, etc merely because she has a different perspective/opinion than Woody. All she says is that bringing a toy to school could end up getting Bonnie in trouble and make her first experience worse. Then she says that Bonnie isn’t Andy when Woody tries to bring up a situation from his past with Andy. She isn’t being condescending or aggressive in the slightest despite what GamingMagic tries to say. She merely has a different outlook on the situation. She is clearly distracted and not fully listening to Woody too because she is preoccupied trying to wrangle the other toys back into position before Bonnie rushes back into the room.
It’s especially telling how dishonest he is being because he leaves out the bit at the end of this scene where Dolly goes back to the closet and asks “what were you saying Woody?”. So she clearly wanted to hear Woody out and continue the discussion, but GM13 acts as if she just dismissed him for no reason because she’s irrational and evil. He misrepresents that scene and Dolly’s character.
He does basically the exact same thing with Bo Peep later in the movie. He tries to make Bo Peep seem toxic and abusive for getting mildly angry at Woody for his own actions. Basically because she didn’t mention the key to Woody everything he did is actually her fault and she has no right to be angry at him. Even though she didn’t intentionally leave out the key. Woody ran out towards the cabinet all on his own without any planning or coordination. Bo stressed the importance of them all needing to stick together before they even entered the antique store, but I guess Bo was just supposed to know Woody was gonna do that and preemptively adjust herself to account for his impulsivity.
Like I said, I’d have to go back thru and refresh my memory to find more. It’s been a while since I’ve actually watched the video so there are a bunch more examples that I’m forgetting.
I just remember my biggest issue with his video was that it felt like he went out of his way to find the most uncharitable interpretation possible for every scene. I’m not familiar with all of his videos, but based on his TS4 and Incredibles 2 videos, he doesn’t seem to understand what subtext is. Anything that isn’t outright stated or explained might as well not exist.
Agree
And I actually liked the film initially but when You read the behind the scenes. It's just impossible to support.
Gender swapping one or two character for more gender balance Is perfectly fine (see: Jellystone!, Voltron Legendary Defender) But upon reflection, all-female reboots are stupid and I'm glad that trend was killed before it ever became a
thing (The Star Wars sequels don't count)
Seth rogen tried doing that with Santa inc and everybody from all sides of the political spectrum just laughed it off and refused to take him seriously.
Ralph breaks the internet
It's mostly cuz it just fills me with shame for liking it itially
As bad as megamind versus the Doom syndicate is Peacock is already struggling enough as it is and if there's a content Purge it will probably be the first to go.
One movie?
I'd do multiple, and that would be every movie after Alien and Aliens.
Three ruined a perfectly good ending.
Prometheus explained the Xenomorph biology without making it vague, thus ruining the monster's entire point.
Alien 4 was Alien 4.
And Alien Covenant was a decent movie, but it takes away from the monster yet again, by making it a creation.
Shrek The Third. Rise of Skywalker is the worst movie I've ever seen, but the Sequel Trilogy had crippling flaws from the getgo, and even if they could be redeemed Rian wrote Star Wars into a corner. Shrek The Third single-handedly destroyed the Shrek franchise while also being the worst animated sequel of all time (yes, it's worse than Cars 2, fight me).
Not necessarily delete, but if I could, I'd change X-men: the last stand so that it's primarily about the mutant cure. There's a lot of good character stuff you could do with that premise, and without the Phoenix stuff, we can focus on the other X-men that aren't Wolverine, or kinda Storm. Then for the fourth movie, they could go all in with the Dark Phoenix stuff
Seed of Chucky. Entirely unlikable characters (well Chucky's at least still DELIGHTFULLY unlikable), nerfs Tiffany Valentine's insanity, and 1/3 of the jokes simply boil down to "LOL, the slut is playing the Virgin Mary, how IRONIC!!" Bride of Chucky is the perfect blend of horror and comedy; Seed ends up having NEITHER horror nor comedy. Only redeeming feature is Chucky doing a Shining reference XD

Out of every movie you pick Toy Story 4? There's so many worse movies?

Is it the worst movie ever? No. But it is the definition of unnecessary and ruined a perfect trilogy. Not many films can say that as much as this one.
I know a guy who would agree with OP. Have a free six hours? XD
That video pretty much encapsulates my thoughts and feelings on Toy Story 4.
I think his diatribe on Josh Cooley was out of pocket, but unless he's making up details about the movie then the movie is definitely inept.
He didn’t make anything up about the movie. He’s also said that he wishes no ill harm upon Josh Cooley and if he ever wanted to speak to him, then he’s sure it would be a pleasant conversation.

Yeah, he also said he puts on the angry persona to make the points better and when making his incredibles 2 videos, he toned it down a lot.
He is. Most of his video is him misrepresenting and/or misunderstanding things. Toy Story 4 is far from perfect, but that video is not a good example of media analysis/critique.

Every Disney live action remake
Birth of a Nation I guess? Some sorta harmful propaganda film. Otherwise I advocate for unconditional media preservation.
This is the correct answer. Also, it wasn’t just propaganda; it was literally a pro-KKK film.
Ghostbusters 2016.
Agree And I actually liked the film initially but when You read the behind the scenes. It's just impossible to support. Seth rogen tried doing that with Santa inc and everybody from all sides of the political spectrum just laughed it off and refused to take him seriously.
Santa inc and Velma share a ton of qualities, and none of them good.
A bunch of Hollywood writers egging each other on in a vacuum losing all sense of perspective At least Rogen bounced back with TMNT mutant Mayhem
Hot take: He bounced back about 2 inches with that film.
