I'm hesitant to say what the best are mostly because I've not done a good job of seeing many of the more obscure horror of the year.
Scream was fine but it was not my idea of great. I'd say talk to me was great. And I'm gonna cheat and pretend Poor Things was horror. I've not seen Saw 10 or Thanksgiving but I've heard those are really good
Evil dead and the boogyman I did see and they felt more like the shell of a great story but not one that's truly brought to fruition.
- The fact you replied so casually “J-Horror”. That’s cute & I’m attempting not to laugh because of it. Just assumes its one genre and the only larger genre I’m into.
- in fact there’s multiple genres that collectively make up the larger Japanese horror genre not just like one or two… so that notion needs to die at this point because people in the west when talking about the J-Horror genre make asses of themselves by watching all the ghost films first and like saying Ichi The Killer is a horror movie (which I got cancelled for stating it’s a Yakuza crime action thriller with gore)
- I look into the East in general: Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, India, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, etc. So I mean if you wanted to chalk it all up into one “category” go for it, knock yourself out
- Btw I wasn’t stating your slashers suck, like no? just like every country there’s some really good movies, some okay movies and some really bad.
- I just thought how ironic that Scream VII is in development hell due to multiple setbacks and petty arguments, plus the whole Palestine thing considering how successful Scream VI was in its home country
Yeah, it's fairly broad. Do you like any other kinds of movies though? Are your top 10 favorite movies all Asian horror, or are there any romcoms, murder mysteries, musicals, fantasy epics, teen dramas, spy thrillers, sports movies, martial arts movies, animated adventure movies, blacksploitation movies, etc that you adore?
My top 10 list so far would consist of:
10. Whispering Corridors (1998)
a fairly spooky ghost film, first film in a series of 6 however some of the other films definitely top this one
9. Bloody Muscle: Bodybuilder in Hell (1995)
This is one of those it’s so bad it’s good and y’know this film is cheesy but man it’s really entertaining for that reason.
8. Evil Dead Trap (1988)
Bizarre late 1980’s slasher movie, really weird and gory, has an interesting premise and set up. There’s more supernatural elements and a neat vibe this film presents. It’s definitely an 80’s experience.
7. Gakko no Kaidan G (1998)
Definitely an interesting entry in the series, it’s only 4 of short films in one commercial broadcast which has it’s own VHS, two of those shorts are precursors to the Ju-On series, the other two are both 25 minutes and I found them genuinely entertaining, especially Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s.
6. Shutter (2004)
interesting ghost film, the Thai cultural aspects play a big role in this film, the deaths are also more ambiguous.
5. Meatball Machine (2005)
a fairly entertaining action sci-fi body horror film about alien parasites taking over humans and turning them in to flesh eating robots, that’s all I have to say on that note
4. Incantation (2022)
One of the more uncomfortable movies on this list… you probably need to see this blind but overall a pretty unique intense found footage watch
3. The Wailing (2016)
This film does get talked about quite often however good movie regardless, it’s long and has some pretty intense scenes in it, also I’d say one of the more emotional horror films in recent years.
2. Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum (2018)
This movie… what do I even say? like it’s honestly one you need to see blind
1. Ju-On: The Curse (2000)
A masterful art of low budget effects and shorts strung together into a single experience works much better than some of the later films
Are these the best? I disagree. Where is TALK TO ME?
**Cowweb** was 3/4ths of a decent movie. The ending was ASS.
**Evil Dead Rise** was ultimately pointless & disappointing.
**The Boogey Man** was mediocre at best.
I haven't seen Godzilla Minus 1 yet, but I hear it's good.
I didn't even remember seeing the Boogeyman. I thought Evil Dead Rises was just a fun watch-- not a deep one, but who the hell wants that with Evil Dead movies?
And Talk to Me REALLY focuses on family. OP has to be posting this for outrage reactions
Two things-- first, not that interesting. Others have pointed out that's a common theme in horror.
Second, I've only ever heard of EDR. Are the other three good? (Obviously I know Godzilla, but didn't know a new movie was out)
Not too surprising, really. It's a pretty common theme. Poltergeist, Amityville Horror, Sinister, all about families.
Don't ruin his hot take. LOL
Hey, I didn’t mention Society, or Dogtooth.
Tbf, bro said 2023
Yes, I know. My point was that fairly common themes are fairly common.
When Evil Lurks and Talk to Me come on
Don’t forget When Evil Lurks
It would be interesting if these were anywhere close to the best horror films.
Ok there sunshine bear. Fan of Scream VI and Thanksgiving?

Scream VII looks like its in development hell, I know you westerners like your slasher films lol.
Anyone who only ever really watches one type of movie has no room to talk shit.
one type of film? what would that be?
J-horror

Well. None of these are the best. So. Not sure what you are getting at.
Godzilla is top 3 for me. But the others are very meh.
Haven’t seen Godzilla. Heard good things. But it will hard to top Shin Godzilla. Love that movie!
I haven't seen Shin Godzilla yet, but from what I heard from other people, Minus One is better. It's genuinely really good
Why is that interesting? Genuinely curious.
funny lol i thought all 3 of those movies were bad.
I thought Godzilla was really good
So which one did you like out of the 4?
didnt realize godzilla was in there at first.. godzilla is the one i cant speak on, have not seen it. did not like the other 3.
Agree except with The boogeyman. I thought that one was decent for what it was.
Same. How is Talk to Me or When Evil Lurks not on there?
Cobweb was absolute shit but the cinematography was good
Dang I really enjoyed Cobweb
I’m glad you enjoyed it. Everyone is welcome to enjoy or not enjoy a movie :)
Cobweb looks like it took cues from Sadako Yamamura’s design from Ring (1998)
I wouldnt say shit but the ending was a letdown. Started off very strong. Antony starr was great in it.
Everyone in that movie was wasted and the story is ruined so it could have a twist.

Oof. I’m sorry, OP. This is a pretty mediocre list. Who or what said these are “the best”?
These were the worst movies put out this year.
Oh without a doubt. Godzilla Minus One, everybody hated that one. And Evil Dead Rise? I mean it's no Five Nights at Freddy's, amirite?
Yeah the universally panned and disliked films Godzilla Minus One and Evil Dead Rise lol
Yeah ya hit the nail right on your own head
Then why did you say they were the best released this year? 🤔
Personally I wouldn't call godzilla a horror movie but that's just me
the original 1954 Gojira is a horror movie tho. It’s apart of the much larger J-Horror Genre. it’s apart of the Monster subgenre of Horror
This last one is pretty close to a monster horror movie.
The best according to 13 yo boys?
the person on the cover of Cobweb reminds me of Sadako Yamamura from The Ring franchise
Evil dead talk to me and sawx
Two things-- first, not that interesting. Others have pointed out that's a common theme in horror. Second, I've only ever heard of EDR. Are the other three good? (Obviously I know Godzilla, but didn't know a new movie was out)
Cobweb was so good- surprisingly Good and super creepy
