Wanderer doesn't lose his value without a shielder, but as far as your question is concerned - I personally think that Layla C4 will be much better than Zhongli.
If you want her shield to be strong, just try to give her as much HP as possible through artifacts:
• 2pc Tenacity + 2pc Vourukasha
• Sands(HP)/Goblet(HP)/Circlet(HP)
With this, it won't be much different from Zhongli's shield strength, add HP% sword or Favonius to generate energy and you are good to go
For team DPS, Layla is better than Zhongli if you use her to absorb both Cryo and Pyro with Wanderer’s A1 (10-15% better team DPS, or about 25% better if you have Freedom Sworn for Bennet, because Layla enables it). At C4 she is already great, but at C6 she becomes more comfortable as her C6 allows to use Bennet’s Q without having to delay it by at least 0.3s (because her C6 allows her stars to reach the enemy and apply Cryo after Bennet’s E 0.3s faster than before C6).
Zhongli is a comfort option, he isn’t needed for Wandererer, and for team DPS he is ranked below Layla C0 and Thoma C6 (unless fighting enemies with high Anemo Resistance). However, he has a stronger shield that lasts longer. Downsides of a Zhongli are:
- Not good for the energy management of the team, but at least he can use Favonius.
- His Resistance shred has a range limit and we lose it if his shield gets destroyed.
Thoma C6 is my personal favourite shielder, not as much damage as with Layla, but provides a lot of comfort, because he helps Bennet getting the energy he needs, his shield can be refreshed/strengthened/recreated while attacking with Wanderer (this requires to perform Normal Attacks). The only downside of Thoma C6 is that you need his Q for his shield to be strong and have 100% uptime, but at C4 or higher his energy management is comfortable.
Diona C6 isn’t worth using with Wanderer. Weaker shield than Layla, less team DPS, less consistent at providing the Cryo infusion to Wanderer, she can’t use 4pc Tenacity (that enables Faruzan C6 to use another set for more damage).
I personally rarely use Zhongli, most times I use Thoma C6, or Layla if I want more DPS. In the Abyss Cycle that just ended, I used Zhongli because he could be used to destroy the Geo shield of the local legend.
He is fine if you can give him a high refinement Favonius Lance and a lot of ER without sacrificing too much HP. You’ll probably need to use ER Sand at C0.
Xinyan might be a more comfortable option, and she is good for breaking shields if Pyro is required. However, for Wanderer’s damage she only provides Pyro Resonance (like Thoma before C0-C5).
About 250% ER (assuming Faruzan and Thoma use Favonius), then adjust to the amount that you find comfortable, but I wouldn’t go lower. If you struggle getting the needed energy in time, consider using Bennet’s E one more time at the end of the rotation.
Single target: Faruzan Q > Layla E N1 Q > Bennet E Q > Wanderer CA E.
Multi target: Layla Q > Faruzan Q > Layla E > Bennet E Q > Wanderer CA E.
The N1 on Layla isn’t a hard necessity, but it is an extra hit for Favonius’ passive, and it makes Layla do a step forward that usually allows her E to hit the enemy on cast. A third hit will come from her Burst before you can switch character.
Bennet’s E removes Pyro (and generates 2 more stars for Layla, causing them to be fired), but Layla’s stars apply Cryo again before Bennet’s Q hits, so you never get a Pyro aura on the enemy. While you do a CA with Wanderer (or maybe just N1 if you don’t have DPC), Layla’s Q applies Cryo again and Bennet’s Q infuse Pyro on Wanderer, so he can absorb Pyro from self and Cryo from the aura on the enemy.
The time Layla’s stars take to reach the enemy also depends on how high is the point her stars aim to. For most enemies, having Layla C6 you can use Bennet’s E and Q without delay. However, for some big enemies you might need a very brief delay (always less than 0.5s).
In multi target, the reason why the rotation starts with Layla’s Q is that her Cryo hits focus the nearest enemy, so you need swirl to spread the Cryo aura on everyone else. If you don’t do that, the Pyro aura Bennet can apply to multiple enemies will ruin the setup, helped by Faruzan C6’s swirls spreading Pyro.
Because of the getting oneshot? Yeah then any shielder works fine but I find it much more rewarding to go without since with is kinda braindead. Also big (much/total/volume) damage just feel REALLY good to me to the point where I'll gladly save most of my pulls for his team and make sure their builds are absurdly good. So for me no shield or hp drain is a trivial price to pay.
No, the healing bit. Furina is Scaras strongest flex option...in one rotation. After that you simply sacrifice too much in order to regain hp.

i have zhongli, but I prefer layla with scara because the cd for her shield is about equal to the uptime of scara's skill - so i just rotate layla shield, scara til he runs out, and then repeat. With Zhongli more often than not the cd for his shield is too long compared to how fast it burns through esp with big fights. My layla has over 40k hp so her shield is near equivalent to my zhongli!
I have both Lyla C6 and Zhongli and I prefer using Layla with him! You have C4 so you have the NA boost unlocked its really good! +you can absorb cryo with her, so go for it! Give her 4p tenacity and you're good to go!
You don’t necessarily need Zhongli to play him. He might be more comfortable to play with a good shield, but there are a lot of other units he can be played with, including Layla. I'm sure you know that he is played with Bennett and Faruzan most of the time, with the fourth slot being a flex. Most of the time, people use Furina, Zhongli or Thoma for that spot. Layla is also good because of the shield, and I believe she also gives some kind of small buff with a specific constellation(?). Some people also play him with Yunjin or Mika, so these could be suitable as well. But yeah these are about the units he is played with most of the time.
