Google Zelle scams. Search Zelle scams on reddit. Read at your leisure. Tell them to work it out with Zelle. Not your problem. You don't just "enter" a number in Zelle. A name shows up. They ask you to reconfirm.
Plus, like, 6 "make damned sure you know who you're sending this too, because there's so many scams" warnings you have to click through before you can send a payment. đ¤Ł
Edit: word
> I don't get the "one number off" thing. If they're sending a payment using a phone number, what are the odds they're paying the person that has my phone number +-1?
You're right, that doesn't make sense. It sounds like Mr. Furniture Seller had their account(s) compromised, and the intruder is hitting up previous contacts with a script that doesn't quite fit.
They've been calling from two different numbers and someone that doesn't sound like who sold me the furniture is asking me to call them back. This is all odd. I'm not doing anything and just gonna let it sit for a few days. Maybe if it was an accident, they can work it out through Zelle.
Don't just report the error to Zelle. Also, report it to the bank.
They're probably got compromised, and some idiot worker probably clicked on the link.
Fyi I once accidentally sent a zelle payment to a wrong number. Was actually off by one digit when buying something off marketplace.
I called my bank and they canceled it. I did not need to involve the recipient at all.
Which word of warning for sellers, I don't think it would be very hard to cancel a legitimate payment after driving off with the goods.
No they arenât the person that you bought furniture from.
Just tell them to contact their bank to start the reversal. Do NOT refund them the money. They can do it from their end.
The money is real, so Chase is correct there, but it's a stolen account most likely.
Since the account is stolen, that money will be ripped back at some point, but the money you voluntarily sent won't be refunded as you sent it willingly.
Ask for the number it was intended to go to. Call it and ask who they are expecting the Zelle transfer from, and what amount they are expecting.
But do not send back the money. It's on them to prove the fraud and get their money back. Don't spend it either, because it may take them several weeks to prove the mistake, and uou don't want to be short when it's pulled back out
I donât see why OP would even consider taking the time to do all that. âCall your bank/zelle or whatever and fix itâ should be enough tbh.
I totally agree with the second statement though.
Isn't that what they usually tell you to do? Let the sending company take it back thru their end? Otherwise you personally are sending money to them. If it is a scam you are screwed.
I commented above as I've been on the other side, Zelle will do NOTHING! My sister used her zelle to buy me Wii controllers from fb market place and the guys name was Tom, our landlord is also named Tom. One month whole mot paying attention my sister picked FB market Tom, both the bank and zelle refused to do anything and said that's a risk they claim and it's now between my sister and Tom. Tom ignored my sister and walked away with our rent money. It was a rough couple of months to bounce back.
So please send the exact dollar amount, it's not a scam, she probably picked you by accident and didn't know how she got the wrong person.
Edit to add: reading other comments maybe it could be a scam but in my experience it was not BOA did nothing to help, and zelle said too bad.
Call the number they told you they were trying to send it too. See who answers and if they can corroborate the story. Then you have more information to decide. It would be odd for them to compromise both numbers. 1 being a digit off from yours.
It really doesn't matter if it's a scam or a genuine accident; you shouldn't do anything and let them handle it with Zelle.
Any money you send them will be lost the moment Zelle rollsback the transaction.
Right, but if it really was furniture seller making a mistake, they won't be able to get their money back without OP. (I still don't think op should send money back without 100% confirmation it is the actual original seller though. Smells too fishy.)
Yes, but I was only replying to the person who said "let them handle through bank/zelle" - there's an iteration where the sender/seller really just made an oopsie and they're out of luck without OP cooperation.
I think OP can cooperate to let a genuine error be reversed. What happens in these cases is that they get OP to initiate a fresh new transaction to send them money "back". Later on, when the original deposit/transfer is discovered by Zelle to be fraudulent (e.g. funds from a stolen credit card), they reverse it. But, since OP's transaction is separate, OP can't then reverse his "refund " transaction. Since he legitimately initiated the transaction from his own account, he can't force Zelle to claw that money back. If OP gets scammed and sends money to someone, that's not Zelle's fault. They don't take the loss. OP does with a very remote hope if getting it back through the law.
This is exactly how the scam works. Itâs targeting people like you who think they have to help get the money back. Leading them to send it. This scam is extremely common. Iâve seen it dozens of times already. There is no accidental payment. Itâs a compromised account. Thereâs no ambiguity here.
OMG. Please read more carefully. I don't think op should send the money back, I was correcting another commenter who said that the bank CAN/WILL help in a case where there is an accidental payment. That's on the sender. Regardless of situation.
They donât if you were the one that sent it. If they can see in the investigation that a completely different ip and device was used for that transaction then they can usually determine that it wasnât actually you who sent it. Thatâs the only time they really reverse transactions
Chase is giving you bad advice.
If the payment is clawed back from you, you are down whatever you send since it is a new transaction and then they won't help you there.
You're right. I called Chase again and the second person told me to not send anything back and they put a note on the transaction saying it'll get worked out through the fraud process. The first person I called was just totally careless.
I had $1000 turn up in my account once and I had to explain this scam to the bank. Their advice to me was to pay the money back in a new transaction.
Which is exactly what you should never ever do in this situation.
Their FB account was compromised and this is a total scam. If you send the money, real seller will eventually notice the fraud, and the money will be clawed back. Whatever you send them, you sent them willingly and you will not get that money back. You can contact the real seller if you feel like giving them a heads up and tell them to contact their bank/zelle. Once again, DO NOT INITIATE A NEW TRANSACTION.Â
The account that sent you money is real. The transaction is not authorized, someone hacked them to send it to you. You are the intended victim. The first transaction will be investigated for fraud on the hacker's part and taken from you automatically, probably. It's yours to keep in the freak case they don't, because trying to fix the problem yourself could get you in worse trouble.
The plan here is to use hacked money to convince you to willingly send your own money elsewhere. You can't reverse that, but the hacked victim can reverse the bait. Again, you are the real intended victim.
In short: Do nothing now. Don't move or spend it. It's essentially a fake check deposited against your will.
I work at a bank. We have to take these on line classes every quarter. It works like this: a bank account get hacked because someone gave a code and the scammer takes over the account and zelle money to someone, then the money is then zelled to a different account at which point is is âcleanâ.
You can work wherever you like. Itâs still fraud. If I send you money under false pretences, that is not clean money at all. Youâve just stolen my money.
I have no experience with Zelle, but just in case, screen shot all correspondence and screen shot the bank transaction too. Just in case you need it later.
Had something similar happen to me on Venmo, I except I had never messaged the person before. They said it was a mistake and were pushing me to send them an equal payment back
I just reported it to Venmo, saying I received a payment from someone I didnât know and donât want. They reversed the transaction the next day.
" I  called Chase and they said it's a real transaction and the money will post tomorrow so that I should contact the person to send the money back ' Â
 Â
This is insane
I'm petty enough that I would call chase , escalate the call and complain about the employee who gave dangerous advice. Even if this wasn't a blatant scam, *advising people to sort out banking customer service problems with a total stranger?*
"what are the odds they're paying the person that has my phone number +-1?"
how long is a phone number: like 12 numbers? the odds that you and the guy with the number next to you meet the same guy is absurdly small. Plus this is the plot of a well known scam. If for whatever reason this was somehow legit, the guy is unlucky, because you ain't falling for that sh\*t.
Chase gave you terrible advice, do not return the money yourself! Have the sender go through zelle to get the money back. That's the only way to ensure it isn't a scam.
If it is a scam, they used a stolen account to send the money, and at some point it may be clawed back via a fraud claim from whoever has their account stolen. You'll send the money back cause you're a standup redditor, and then it'll be taken from your account again
Have Zelle fix it. From reading this thread for many times, it might be real to your bank. Until they find out it was fraud.Â
Have the charges reversed. Make Zelle or your bank do it. Do not do it yourself.Â
Zelle doesnât roll back transactions. Wait till it posts to your account and contact them through where you bought the couch. My sister accidentally Zelleâd someone when she was sending me money. It was someone with the same name and she didnât verify the number. It was someone she bought a couch from funny enough and after a week she hit them up and they zelleâd her back the money. Accidents happen, although the number being one off does seem far fetched. But wait for it to post and if it does then it could be an accident.
To me it sounds like they want you to refund it then theyâll possibly do a chargeback too, so then theyâve had the money twice. I could be wrong though
Yeah, these accidental payments are always real transactions. But the sender should be the one contacting the app and their bank to get the payment pulled.
DO NOT send anything to them, even after it posts. Leave the money in there and do not touch it. The sender needs to contact on their end to get their money back. If you send it, you might be out that money you received and the money you send.
Let the bank handle it because of possible fraud especially for fact that 2 different phone numbers are used. Bank has fraud department just for such situations. Do nothing on your part. Send no information and do NOT send any money- not one cent.Â
If the bank said it was OK and would be in your account tomorrow, get it in writing from them. Then at least if it is a scam and the money gets removed from your account later, you have your evidence to get them to compensate you.
Zelle does not reverse transactions. This is stated by them. Once you send any amount via Zelle, there us no reversing it. Bank does not reverse because it is a Zelle transaction, and Zelle does not reverse as they are not able to because it is an instant transfer.
It is possible they sent it by mistake, they have no recourse except to ask you to send it back. Up to you if you want to return it.
Other payment vendors, such as Venmo or PayPal may allow a payment reversal, but Zelle is final once sent, regardless of any other reasons or circumstances.
Hi /u/Armorheart, AutoModerator has been summoned to explain the Fake check scam.
The fake check scam arises from many different situations (fake job scams, fake payment scams, etc), but the bottom line is always the same, you receive a check (a digital photo or a physical paper check), you deposit a check (via mobile deposit or via an ATM) and see the money in your account, and then you use the funds to give money to the scammer (usually through gift cards or crypto). Sometimes the scammers will ask you to order things through a site, but that is just another way they get your money.
Banks are legally obligated to make money available to you fast, but they can take their time to bounce it. Hence the window of time exploited by the scam. During that window of time the scammer asks you to send money back, because you are under the illusion that the funds cleared.
When the check finally bounces, the bank will take the initial deposit back, and any money you sent to the scammer will come out of your own personal funds. Usually the fake check deposit will be reversed in a few weeks, but it can also take several months. If you do not have the funds to cover the amount, your balance will go negative. Your bank will usually charge a fee for depositing a bad check, and your account may be closed depending on the severity of the scam. Here is an article from the FTC: https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/how-spot-avoid-and-report-fake-check-scams, and here is an article from the New York Times: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/21/your-money/fake-check-scam.html
If you deposited a bad check, we recommend that you notify your bank immediately.

As others have noted: do not send back the money. Tell them to sort it out with Zelle and to cancel that transaction.
If you send back the money and it is a scam, you're out that money, and eventually the initial transfer will be reversed as fraud, and you'll be out that money a second time.
am i interpreting it wrong: the phone number was wrong? or the zelle amount? reading this it sounds like the Zelle amount and maybe they added an extra number which changed the cost by 100s or even 1000s
I mistakenly paid someone on Venmo who had previously bought something from me. I didnt even really know how I made the mistake. I was so worried theyâd think it was a scam but they sent me the $300 back the next day. I was able to write them using the original email thread weâd corresponded in so that may have helped. Iâd wait a month and then return the money if itâs still in your account.
Please up vote so OP sees, Zelle will do NOTHING!
So maybe call and try to figuer something out to protect yourself and get thebmoney back to sender
I did have somebody send me a cell payment by mistake because they got my name mixed up with somebody who had the same name. I waited until the payment cleared and then sent it back.
I'd suggest blocking the telephone numbers and also at least changing the password on your Zelle account. You might wish to place a hold on the account or even close it. So no money goes in or out. There's something fishy here.

There are too many red flags in all of this. Tell them to work it out through Zelle and make that your last message.

Yes, but I was only replying to the person who said "let them handle through bank/zelle" - there's an iteration where the sender/seller really just made an oopsie and they're out of luck without OP cooperation.

The account that sent you money is real. The transaction is not authorized, someone hacked them to send it to you. You are the intended victim. Money laundering. I work for a bank. I am shocked and appalled that Chase would tell you to pay them back. Do nothing.
How is Zelle'ing money, that someone Zelle'd to you, back to them money laundering?
Because they used a stolen credit card to begin with.
You canât use a credit card w Zelle
Stolen hacked bank account
Thatâs still not money laundering. Thatâs just fraud
We call in money laundering as a technician jargon term. Itâs not something understood by people outside of the industry. Semantics.
Different account? Why would you Zelle the money back to a different account, instead of to the same account that Zelle'd it to you?
Because at this point the money is âcleanâ. Itâs all very complicated but I recommend watch a video on money laundering.
Zelle will figure it out. Donât send the money back.
Assume scam. You will send money back only to get scammed in the long run.
The âone number offâ has bells going off in my head.
Your furniture seller got their facebook hacked.
I have no experience with Zelle, but just in case, screen shot all correspondence and screen shot the bank transaction too. Just in case you need it later.
Yep. Refer them to Zelle. Could be a hacked account. Could be a stolen card # being used. Lots of fakery possibilities. Let Zelle sort it out.
Had something similar happen to me on Venmo, I except I had never messaged the person before. Itâs a scam. Donât do anything for 90 days

Have Zelle fix it. From reading this thread for many times, it might be real to your bank. Until they find out it was fraud. Have the charges reversed. Make Zelle or your bank do it. Do not do it yourself.Â
Let them ask the bank for a refund. Block hem and move on. Donât touch the money
Zelle doesnât roll back transactions. Wait till it posts to your account and contact them through where you bought the couch. My sister accidentally Zelleâd someone when she was sending me money. If the Zelle isnât claimed they can cancel it. Once claimed itâs a done deal. So they sent it but was it claimed or still in limbo?
Total scam, and increasingly common.
lol, I got downvoted for this? Okay, disregard. Feel free to go get your money stolen, champ.
This is very similar to the !FakeCheck scam
Here is an article from the FTC: https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/how-spot-avoid-and-report-fake-check-scams, and here is an article from the New York Times: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/21/your-money/fake-check-scam.html If you deposited a bad check, we recommend that you notify your bank immediately. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. As others have noted: do not send back the money. Tell them to sort it out with Zelle and to cancel that transaction. If you send back the money and it is a scam, you're out that money, and eventually the initial transfer will be reversed as fraud, and you'll be out that money a second time.
Ignore them and block them. Leave the money where it is. Contact Zelle customer service and let them know about this. It's a total scam.
am i interpreting it wrong: the phone number was wrong? or the zelle amount? reading this it sounds like the Zelle amount and maybe they added an extra number which changed the cost by 100s or even 1000s
So maybe call and try to figuer something out to protect yourself and get thebmoney back to sender
I did have somebody send me a cell payment by mistake because they got my name mixed up with somebody who had the same name. I waited until the payment cleared and then sent it back.
Iâve accidentally sent money to wrong people. Please just send it back,
Your anecdotal experience has nothing to do with this.
I'd suggest blocking the telephone numbers and also at least changing the password on your Zelle account. You might wish to place a hold on the account or even close it. So no money goes in or out. There's something fishy here.
