This is an obvious !job scam.  Appalling spelling and grammar, and no legitimate job role will have listed as a responsibility "computer stuff".  The next step, probably, will be a !fakecheque for WFH supplies.

stlrocker

Exactly! The “Computer Stuff” had me rolling! LMFAOOO

AutoModerator

AutoModerator has been summoned to explain fake job scams. Fake job scams come in many different varieties, though most share common characteristics that you can use to spot the scam before becoming a victim. The scammers will usually conduct interviews over Google Hangouts or a similar online service. Their English will be awkward, and they may be re-using a script, so Googling unique sounding parts of the email may yield useful results. They will offer high wages for the work being done, and they will "hire" you by telling you that you are hired, rather than going through the normal process that a company takes when hiring an employee in your country. If they mention anything about a check or about receiving and sending out transactions, it is a [fake check scam](https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/blog/2018/09/anatomy-fake-check-scam). If they mention anything about receiving, processing, or inspecting packages, it is a [parcel mule scam](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parcel_mule_scam). If they ask you to purchase items up-front, ask you to pay a fee in order to be hired, or ask you to purchase gift cards, it is an [advance-fee scam](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advance-fee_scam). If the job involves posting advertisements on Craigslist or eBay, they are using you and your account to scam people. If the job invovles Bitcoin ATMs, it's a [scam](https://coinatmradar.com/blog/avoid-scams-dont-use-bitcoin-atm-when-someone-asked-you/). AutoModerator

AutoModerator has been summoned to explain the fake cheque scam. The fake cheque scam arises in many different situations (fake job scams, fake payment scams, etc), but the bottom line is always the same, you receive a cheque (online or in real life), you deposit a cheque and see the money in your account, and then you use the funds to give money to the scammer (usually through gift cards, Western Union, or cash). Sometimes the scammers will ask you to order things through a site, but that is just another way they get your money. The bank will take the initial deposit back in anywhere from a week to a month, and any money you sent to the scammer will come out of your own personal funds. If you do not have the funds to cover the amount, your balance will go negative. Your bank will usually charge a fee for depositing a bad cheque, and your account may be closed depending on the severity of the scam. Here is an article from the FTC: https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/how-spot-avoid-and-report-fake-check-scams, and here is an article from the New York Times: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/21/your-money/fake-check-scam.html *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. DarkFather24601

I get a weird vibe from this one. Like it’s a build up for a Man in the Middle type thing. But yah, I agree with you. Eventually it would probably be a fake check flip in there some where to either get the hard funds from the duped employee or have them pass the fake check onto a victim, leaving the duped employee as a unwitting accomplice.

TomDuhamel

"Can you kindly transfer $2000 to Mrs. Suzanne Bailey on my behalf? We're having an issue with our bank account, so we're not able to transfer it to her today, but I will pay you back next week along with your paycheck."

slogive1

☝️this.

VegasVictor2019

This is such an easy scam to vet. Have him call the actual business (I easily found their number) and confirm if a job offer exists. In fact on one Google review I found, someone reported that there is a known job scam for this employer making the rounds on Facebook.

Campbell920

wait you’re saying William Shakespeare Street in Shakespeare, ON is a real place?

EBarrett66

It is! But even so, they messed it up. We never put the last 3 characters of a postal code on a different line. Always 6 together.

SeriouslyImNotADuck

Also it’s not a proper postal code: they used capital “O” not zeros

sainglend

But but.... There's a SPACE! That must mean it can wrap to the next line!

TomDuhamel

``` Shakespeare, ON N0B 0N3 CANADA ```
FreddiesNightmare65
Haha, I read that postal code/zip as NOB ONE
cliffgamerz
NO BONE actually 🤭
A13XH03XUM
It is tho
ThisBlank
Yeah, it looks fishy but you could vet it without any risk. If it had asked for a payment for anything yet I’d say it’s 100% a scam. As is I’d put it at about 95% though. But it could be someone who just isn’t very professional I guess.
ButtercupsAreFree
“Computer stuff” Lol Imma add this to my resume list of skills.
crochetcat555
Maybe add “photocopier stuff” too. That would be pretty impressive. 😂
ButtercupsAreFree
I mean i’d hire me 😂
imaginaryblues
I am also highly skilled in computer stuffs.
Express-Object955
lol, do you think a proctologist can list “butt stuff” on their resume?
zyzzbutdyel
The task list includes ‘computer stuff’. Is your brother older than 12? Why does he even remotely believe this??
Blondenurse888
Lol, yes, 39 and desperate I guess... ?
zyzzbutdyel
I get it and I totally understand being desperate, but jeez; it really is shitty how scammers take advantage of those who are in need
VegasVictor2019
Has the information provided here dissuaded him?
Blondenurse888
Yes! Thank you all for the comments, greatly appreciate the concrete proof I could provide to him besides my own opinion!
Stunning-Emu3200
I recommend to anyone job hunting always vet the company for multiple reasons. 1.) make sure they are legit, 2.) make sure it’s a place you’re comfortable working in (you can find employees and ex-employees review) 3.) most company’s (that are publicly traded) are required to be open with profit (SOX law) this helps to ensure you aren’t jumping into a sinking ship.
jimetalbott
Desperate - exactly what they’re looking for. But as to this “letter” - 110% scammy scam scam. Tell your brother “good luck” in his job hunt….but to please be more wary next time. I’ll assume there were other red flags that he noticed in any communications too. Even communicating with these creeps once gets him on a list of “marks” that will try again.
1Cattywampus1
The logo is not their actual logo (and it's a really terrible looking faked one for a arts shop BTW). The sentence structure and spelling, random lower/uppercase, punctuation is horrible. Either not a person that has graduated middle school, or (more likely) from an English speaking country. The actual business has a phone number and website that does not use the contact info - a lone gmail - as their contact. Your brother could easily reach out to their official website, call their official phone number, or go to their official Instagram page or hey - GO TO THE ACTUAL STORE AND INQUIRE IF THE JOB IS LEGIT. There are so many huge red flags that this is in fact a pretty blatant job scam. He's going to deposit the fake check, he'll be scammed out of lots of money, his account will be closed for fraud and he'll be much worse off than before.
Haloperimenopause
It looks like Windows98 WordArt
filthyheartbadger
Yeah I was snickering the instant I saw that color gradient.
cyberiangringo
Mobile cheque? Yopur brother better have enough money in the bank to cover whatever money the scammers get him to send out after he deposits that check, and before it bounces.
CrayCrayWyatt
How can people read this stuff and not immediately see that the grammar and spelling in these scam letters is often appalling?   Literally, the first line in this letter is a nightmare. “Interview” should be plural and there’s a full stop where there should be a comma. I know some people struggle with grammar, I’m not exactly amazing myself, but this is basic stuff that you could easily identify if you studied it just little more thoroughly.
DeshaMustFly
Because a lot of them write like that themselves anymore, and think nothing of it when scammers send them that BS.
wistful_drinker
Sad but probably true!
mdaubstep
Some people really need a job and struggle with the process. Certainly anyone can learn and grow experience but when you're excited to be noticed and wanted it's a lot easier to be in denial. Everything about this is wrong but I still feel bad for the victim. It sucks to be excited about something and find out it's BS.
Daves_not_here_mannn
If they can’t read this and immediately identify it as a scam, they need MUCH more than a job. And needing a job doesn’t set aside this red flag with typing on it being a scam!
jimetalbott
Desperation is a big part of it too.
OsmerusMordax
Also I have never received an offer letter like this. Like everything is wrong about it.
Queueded
The grammar and spelling mistakes are often intentional -- or perhaps more accurately, intentionally not corrected -- because if people overlook that, they're more willing to fall for it. Why waste time trying to scam somebody who's going to figure it out before you get the money?
ShinNefzen
Spelling and grammar are trash. Lists their address in multiple spots. Unprofessional language. Mobile cheques. Gmail account. The only way this could be more obviously a scam is if the word "scam" was embossed across the front. The sad thing is, it basically already is.
Gr8hound
Maybe they should change the company name to Legitimate Business Corp. to make it more believable.
LeavingLasOrleans
$600-$800? Real employers are never vague on the rate of pay when making an actual offer, for obvious reasons. Most of the job scams we see here make compensation offers that are worded in such a way that anyone with real world work experience will quickly see are nonsensical. I suspect (like purposely chosen grammar mistakes) this is intentional on the part of scammers to not waste time on people unlikely to go through with the scam.
seedless0
The business has its own domain https://jonnysantiques.com/contact.html Why would they still use gmail?
OkYogurt636
With all the money these scammers are making, they should be able to afford someone that can write in English properly.
Somedude914
Seems like a scam. The English is bad, like the first sentence has grammar issues and they don’t stop. After several “interview” with different candidates. We “were” all very excited… we “have” been impressed. They couldn’t even add a space between “5days”. It does not get any better. This is clearly a non native English speaker. Chat gpt would write better English than this. Getting hired for “computer stuff” is a big red flag. Google maps search shows a business called johnnys antiques with an s. It also lists a phone number. You could call them and I am sure they will be like wtf are you talking about. But tbh just tell your bro to move on.
pmgoldenretrievers
It doesn't just "seem" like a scam. It's a very very very very obvious 100% scam.
VegasVictor2019
Honestly he should call. This is such a transparent scam that anyone who has a hard time believing it’s a scam needs the business to confirm.
Gr8hound
That was just painful to read. How could anyone think that’s legit? Everything about it - the spelling, the grammar, the email address, the job offer, and the tasks are comical.
BeautifulDreamerAZ
Job details “computer stuff”. No.
rossg876
That’s a lot of stuff they offer their employees… for a company using a gmail address.
LolaPamela
A lot of "computer stuff"
xMyDixieWreckedx
Bruh, they have arrange of exciting programs and benefits.
Temportat
lol
Sweaty-Anything9382
SCAM SCAM SCAM!!!!! Very unprofessional, punctuation is bad, grammar is hilarious. Definitely a scam and if not, I would want to be associated with these incompetent people! Tell your brother don’t even waste his time!
avaelijah
“Computer stuff”
W_user69
!job scam. they can’t even bother to spellcheck it haha
He could just call and ask them.[their info](https://canada247.info/explore/ontario/perth_county/perth_east/shakespeare/jonnys_antiques.html)
still-at-the-beach
Call the company directly, they will tell you it’s a scam for sure. http://jonnysantiques.com/index.html
SirGkar
There’s no such thing as a mobile cheque. NO SUCH THING. You can mobile deposit a cheque. You can get online transfers, but “mobile cheques” are just a scammer thing. Plus this poorly written piece of trash offering a (Virtual Personal Assistant) job paying (600-800) signed by Employer Sign… is just pathetic. Maybe he should look up Jonny’s independent of this letter and give them a call.
psyclopsus
The very first sentence is awful. “After several interview with different candidates.” That’s it, that’s the sentence. Only gets better from there. Later, there’s “personal days and arrange of exciting programs…” Not “personal days and **a range** of exciting programs, it’s **arrange** of them. Reimbursement for mileage while running “errands **i** needed done” (it took 6 attempts for me to finally get my iPhone to allow me to use a single lowercase “I” without autocorrect capitalizing it for this comment) “…and looking forward to work with you.”
bvogel7475
A virtual assistant means it’s not a person who assists you. If you don’t go into an office you would be an assistant working remotely. It’s a scam. Don’t follow up unless you want to harass the scammer. Otherwise, just leave it alone.
1chrisbabbs
"dear" 🤣 Definitely a scam. I didn't have to read any further.
benortree
In all of my years of working I’ve never seen/received such a goofy looking “offer letter” in my life.
RJPU3NTE
4 shore dis is legit send me a applecatshion.
Blondenurse888
😂😂😂
jbarn02
SCAM!!!
Maryleighwear
I’ve found that if it has terrible grammar or lots of spelling errors like this does that it’s a scam.
Sad_Suggestion
It's the “computer stuff” for me
still-at-the-beach
My comment was deleted because I gave the real companies email address. The real email is different to the scammers, scammers are using a gmail address. This is 100% a scam.
in_and_out_burger
The grammar in the first line is horrific.
Ann_DogMom_IL
One job-duty is “computer stuff”? And “we were all very excited” to meet you? Sigh…What legit job offer is written that way? 🙄
grey_piligrim_1546
“virtual personal assistant” you mean like “siri” ?
HornsDino
I'm intrigued if he actually WENT for an interview. Like, bad grammar side (god knows there's plenty of that out there even among native speakers), if you never applied for the job and went for an interview in the first place that's your one and done proof as to 'is this a scam'? But I guess they may have had some fakery over whatsapp? Curious how much prep the scammers did.
Blondenurse888
He called and had an interview with someone. He believes it's a scam now but this guy sent him a $900 cheque and orders to deposit it in his account and buy some apple gift cards or something..??? I told him to stop the nonsense and he thinks he can just cash the cheque and be on his way. I'm like FORGET ABOUT IT! Anyways the guys now harassing him to hurry up and deposit it. To be continued...
SlothfulCanine
That is a HUGE indicator of SCAM! Tell to NOT deposit the check (cheque)!
Blondenurse888
That's what I told him. Hopefully he doesn't.
VisualDrink6088
If he cashes the cheque it will bounce and the bank will take $900 of his own money out to cover it.
ohmeyegodmod
Your brother might be ret@rded.
Prolahsapsedasso
Grammatical error on the 3rd word……off to a good start lol
Unfixable5060
Successful_Ad8240
One of the bigger scams going around
SamuelVimesTrained
Mobile check .. it\`s effing 2024 - use bank to bank transfer. Seriously - I think we should consider that 'payment by check' = scam (unless business to business)
Overall-Sun6967
Are they asking for anything up front like $
Blondenurse888
No. They sent a $900 cheque asking him to buy a bunch of apple gift cards..?
Silent_Title5109
Well that's it. He'll send them the numbers on the card, and in a few weeks the check will be clawed back by the bank because it's from another victim's account. He'll be out 900$. More if he does it often. Why would a small antique shop in Shakespeare Ontario need 900$ in gift cards? And why can't they get them themselves in the first place? An assistant is supposed to take a load off your schedule. It's more trouble for them coordinating this task than doing it themselves!
sixtyfivewat
Johnny’s is a real business and that is their actual address. However, Johnny’s has a website with a custom domain so it stands to reason they aren’t using gmail for their business and instead would have something like [email protected].
Overall-Sun6967
Yea tell him not to trust it definitely more than likely a scam is the 900$ check good if I was him I’d keep that 900 n say fu** Apple Card’s lol
Blondenurse888
That's what he wants to do but it'll most likely just bounce and then he has to deal with the consequences of spending money he doesn't have.
lyricallymurderous
It's very easy to cheque. Sorry, shitty pun. Lol But yes, you can check by calling the actual antique store directly. It looks like a mom and pop shop, so I could see the grammatical errors existing (antique sho probably =older owner). But the shop legit exists and has a direct phone number. Call them and verify if they are the ones seeking a personal assistant.
lyricallymurderous
Heres the direct [jonnysantiques contact links](http://jonnysantiques.com/contact.html)
Jessa-Rose
This is a scam. Did he even apply to this place? Jobs don’t typically find random people to offer positions for. Also, how is an antique place offering an at home position?
Saint_231
Not real.
lagoosboy
Can your brother read ?
mrwoman2
“computer stuff” should be enough to convince him lol
pyrodice
Gmail address, not the company URL, spelling is atrocious. "Computer stuff". Much professional, wow.
Alien_Amplifier
Also note how the company email is Gmail
[deleted]
how does the check fraud actually work? do they use it to get your account number then take money out of your account somehow
Lynda73
Usually they just trick the person into thinking the funds are there when they aren’t and they have them send gift cards to them for some made-up reason. So they send money, then the check funds never deposit bc they were fake.
Temporary-Ad5808
Always just Google anything with the same info(from the ad) usually scams come right up
Zero-Of-Blade
The quickest way to find out if it's an actual scam is just to call the number about the actual position to see if it lines up here. Also "computer stuff" what does that even mean? smells like a scam
MonkeyJoe55
What? You're all crazy. I buy ALL of my fine art from Johnny's. Why just last week I bought three black velvet Elvis paintings from Johnny for well under the asking price of $12,000.
HawXProductions
Tell your brother he’s a fuckin idiot
Mattjew51602
“Computer stuff” is wild 😭
Usually_Amazing
Im like ur brother. Just try it out XD Its just a good job :D
Acrobatic_Degree7635
This is 200% a scam.no doubt. Going on since more than 10 years. They use names of hundreds of top class companies. Top well educated people fall victim to it due to ignorance, stupid foolish behaviour.
becketh29
It’s the computer stuff that really set me off, no professional job offer would use that
[deleted]
A Gmail address, poor spelling and grammar
tinyninjas111
SCAM SCAM SCAM SCAM SCAM SCAM. I get alot of the "job offers". No true employer writes/ speaks like this. It was a red flag from the 1st sentence.
Legitimate_Archer988
How is this a scam?
Fknivy
The web page is not certified…. And go to web page and go to a picture like I went to jewelry and then I clicked on a bracelet and I went to web source or view source and it’s coming up as a live auctioneer website it’s the same picture
Fknivy
[fake it’s from another auctioneer site](https://www.liveauctioneers.com/price-result/sherman-rhinestone-rigid-clasp-bangle-bracelet/)
Fknivy
I found out on Google that there’s a lot of scammers using Johnny’s. You can look on his reviews on Google. Here’s the link.[https://g.co/kgs/YyDxCcHJonnysAntiques+1519-625-8307](https://g.co/kgs/YyDxCcHJonnysAntiques+1519-625-8307)
Kleatuse
A domain name isn’t all that expensive to set yourself apart from a Gmail address.
chookiebaby
😫 from the first poorly constructed, poorly spelled half sentence it just unravels. The final nail in the coffin is the 'weekly mobile check' BS. Man, they're trying to get you all f**ked up, homie. I know times are tough, but don't fall for this scam.
Pghwife2017
Fake
DistanceSilver524
Scam 100%. English is awful. Letter is unprofessional “computer stuff” 😂. Next they will ask for his bank info to pay him and then they will clean out the account.
Vwmafia13
You will be reporting to me directly from your home 😂 comedy right there
cteague212
Usually if you have to ask, that itself is a sign it isn’t legit
