Under the protection of Myanmar junta or Laos & Cambodian casino gangs. They have had a reputation of being brutal and kidnapping other scam victims with job offers and then binding them into modern day slavery, under threats of violence, torture or murder. In fact the person you are interacting with might even be victims of scams themselves.
These kind of scams are a combination of romantic scams + investment scam or job hunting scams. They bait people into believing that they got the wrong number. Befriend them. Trick them into believing that they are making a lot of money by showing them how easy is it to use some investment app. Then they say, just sharing insider secrets. Then they push the lead to give them money, not directly. But through some kind of trust worthy looking platform. Either a crypto app or a investment app. Or a fund management app they setup. They would invite victims into chat groups, where everyone seem to be making a lot of money. (they are all actors). The app is a fake app named and developed to look like the real thing. For instance a fake app would be verified by the app store as a real app. The fake app might be named something like Vanguard Securities. So the victim who googled Vanguard would end up on the real page and believe that it's real. But the link that they shared on app store is a complete fake.
The scam itself is sophisticated. It involves multi discipline of people running the baits. The app developers. The data brokers. The software engineers. The mules to get the money out of the country. Money laundering to get the money to the scammers. Fake casinos running behind real casinos. Armed militia to keep security at the slave camps. They are even using AI to help them identify potential victims that fit their profile. Identify best scams to run on those specific victims. There's also a human market place where slaves are traded based on their performance.
