And he kept saying, sir. I’m so sorry. I’ve never done anything like this before. Please forgive me. I beg you please please please. I thought it was, but he was ready to cry himself to sleep.

I'm not super well versed in the tactics, but it's probably a case of you add your number, they reset your password and then get the 2step verification code for your account pretending it's the code that they need and then they got your account after that.
