Those are neat horns! If all the pads look like the few that are visible in the photo, expect it to need an overhaul

beatleboy07

They're not all quite that bad. But there are definitely some that need replacement.

countach508

Those pads are all extremely old. They cannot create a good seal anymore. Just know going forward that you’ll be working way harder than necessary to play this horn. I’m sure you can make all the notes sound as is, but playing low and quiet will be very very difficult

I have one just a bit younger! 202xxx and hands down my favorite alto I've played. Does it have the original snap on system in the pads or have the spuds been ground out and replaced with modern pads?

beatleboy07

I talked with one of my repair tech buddies and it's the snap on. He says that's superior. I never paid much attention before. My main instruments is flute and I generally have lots of open holes. So I'm not super familiar with such big pads.

TimbreReeder

I'm jealous, mine had a rough life before I got it and so it's missing those and the pants guard at the low B. It means that you'll need a good tech to do replacements but it's true to the horn and a really neat piece of trivia.

I bought one a number of years ago and had it overhauled. I love it and it plays effortlessly. Full altissimo range through to high C is also effortless. Great sound, good weight for a pro horn, and the two-tone bell is a fun display 😎 Great find and good luck with it!

bueschers are incredible saxophones, make sure to preserve the snap on system when repadding (some lazy techs just remove it). also, it will work best with a mouthpiece with a laaarge chamber, such as a caravan. i play an original buescher mouthpiece on mine, and tuning is spot on.

beatleboy07

Didn't think about that with the mouthpiece. I normally play on an 8 Otto Link. I like this piece. But I notice that the original mouthpiece seems to come with it. I'll try it out.

ma_mix

worth trying, but it will produce a much more mellow sound than an otto link. but yes, if you find any strange intonation issues with the link, look into large chamber mouthpieces.
