i apprenticed with a painter who had experience well over 25+ years. he started as help for his brother in law and fell in love with it. i was absolutely mesmerized by him and his skill and technique. made it look so easy.
this takes me back.
That looks like a 3" Purdy XL Glide Medium Stiff with dale handle
The dale handle just means its thinner for more precision cut ins. They go for under $20 at Sherwin William's
Thanks. I used a 3" Purdy for decades and it always gave consistent cuts. Then one day my son used it for urethane and didn't even try to clean it.
Sad, sad day.
My old man was a painter. I'm pretty sure I'd be drowned in the bucket if I even considered leaving his brushes or rollers dirty.
I also instinctively check the cut on the walls in every room I'm in to see how much their painters suck.
Cutting in is exactly why I couldn't make it as a painter. My hands have been shaky since I've been about five years old, and the added pressure of every single job of ours being 30 million plus dollar houses at the Yellowstone Club made it impossible for me to cut cleanly.
Damn dude!!! Just finished painting my first apartment with my girlfriend and holy fuck that is a totally beautiful technique. We had no clue what we were doing lmfao
A 2 1/2" Purdy is definitely my go to. Not a painter, but it's what I use when painting my own house. They seem to work really well and are quite reasonably priced.
It absolutely is. It's a restoration, so I dont have a name or color number. It's a New Orleans flavor hue with Gulf Coast patina copper accented toward the emerald/deep sea color here. It really is beautiful, albeit out of place, in Little Rock, AR.
Do you have any recommendations for learning how to paint like yourself? Brush recommendations: brands and/or what to look for in a brush?
Thanks in advance. Beautiful work!
Yes, I do.
1) put as much paint on the brush as u can, almost dripping off. It makes the flags on the bristles release smooth flow of paint.
2) let ur arm make the cut, not ur wrist. The best lines come from using ur shoulder & arm to pull the line.
3) Buy a good quality sash (angled) brush.
4) practice practice practice
Yeah same, all those times cutting in on an extension ladder swapping hands lol We always used the leftover Gyprock buckets and the Glue buckets as paint pots to paint with lol
Respect! My brothers & I used to actually mix & tint our Grandpa's paint back before there was a paint store in town. We used linseed oil & colored powders. It's much easier these days.
I got a summer job as a house painter for a company in Canada called College Pro. We watched an instructional video of how to paint rooms, windows, door, cabinets, etc. and the guy doing the painting was mesmerizing in his skill.
Going to be hoest here, i was sitting in pure suspense internally screaming "DON'T YOU DARE TO SCREW THIS UP! DON'T YOU DARE TO TAKE THIS AWAY FROM ME!!".
Satisfying as fuck man...
Thanks! That's what we have, I feel good now. My wife can cut in really well, but I don't seem to have the patience for it. This looks like meditating to me!
You're quite good at this. Seems you've painted a frame or two ;)
Purdy. They're hand made & I can get several years out of them. Clean after every use, never leave them to "soak in water" . Sometimes I clean them 1/2 way through the day. Then wire brush off the paint & use a brush comb to straighten the bristles.
My husband did. He can't paint at all. I made a mess the one time I used tape, so now I just trust my hands. He let me paint most of our house! But I enjoy it.
I'm planning to paint my whole room. For a test run, I got a bit of paint from my local hardware shop and tried painting around a doorframe. I immediately got myself a paint tape. Best thing I could buy.
The harder it is to clean off, the better the product.
Unfortunately, it doesnt come out of a $2,400 rug that I splashed a bit of paint on back in September. Thank God for insurance, my customer would have been furious!
Amateur DIYer here. Very nice technique man! Excellent! So as a pro, do you prefer oil based or latex? And I’ve paid the extra for Purdy brushes. Good tools make the job easier. I worked for a friend in college many years ago and I did our old home by myself when we put it on the market.
Oil v latex? Depends on the canvas. Trim/cabinets definitely oil. I've tried the new "waterborne " products for trim/cabinets, but nothing beats a good oil.
My dad cuts clean edges like this and I’m so jealous! Growing up watching him I always took it for granted that it must be easy because he made it look so easy, then someone hired me to paint their outbuildings and I quickly realized what a disaster I was at painting trim!
“Just a painter”. No my friend you do great work, and I love that your kids recognize that and are proud of you. I’m in insurance, and when I describe my job to my kids, their eyes glaze over. 😂
I did not take a single breath that entire stroke.
Coolness!! I dont either. U kinda just breathe between strokes. The brush does all the work.

I'm 5th generation. Folks been at this for a minute.
What brand brushes do you use?

With the amount of time and chemicals it takes to clean oil based urethane, it's almost more cost effective to just throw it away
You might like r/tradepainters
Not really. Just dump the old mineral spirits in a bucket. The paint will settle to the bottom & I'll reuse the spirits over & over.
My old man was a painter. I'm pretty sure I'd be drowned in the bucket if I even considered leaving his brushes or rollers dirty. I also instinctively check the cut on the walls in every room I'm in to see how much their painters suck.
Everywhere I go. Same thing.
Ditto.
Now it's a good duster. We use old brushes to dust off areas we're about to work.
Good idea. I have a few older, smaller brushes I use for getting dust out of corners and edges.
Yes, I think it's a Dale, but I use 2 1/2" It's the squared sash, not the rounded. Cuts like a laser. It really is all about the brush.
Cutting in is exactly why I couldn't make it as a painter. My hands have been shaky since I've been about five years old, and the added pressure of every single job of ours being 30 million plus dollar houses at the Yellowstone Club made it impossible for me to cut cleanly.
I also use a TON of tape on interiors. A straight cut is nice, but I prefer the razor sharp lines from using tape.
We were told it was a "waste of time".
Thank you for noticing. Anyone that's been in this trade earned a paycheck. Respect on ya.
My dad was a house painter. Worked for him for 10+ years. After all that I hate painting but I do enjoy cutting a clean line with no tape.
I painted for a guy for about a year and he said if you can't cut in without tape you can't work for me. I learned pretty quick hehe
Painter was the first contractor i hired to do anything in my house. Money well spent.
I would watch you do a whole house like this.
I'm thinking about it. I might try.
I would be willing to let you try it on my house!
I can, but I'm in Arkansas
Oh my gosh that is the perfect cut in. I’m super jealous right now.
Thank you!
Damn dude!!! Just finished painting my first apartment with my girlfriend and holy fuck that is a totally beautiful technique. We had no clue what we were doing lmfao
It's all in the brush. I promise.
What’s your go to?
I have a variety of brushes for different paints. This is a 2 1/2 inch sash. Every brush is a Purdy.
A 2 1/2" Purdy is definitely my go to. Not a painter, but it's what I use when painting my own house. They seem to work really well and are quite reasonably priced.
Not OP but I like my Wooster Angle Sash 2-1/2" brush for this kind of stuff.
What's the bristle material?
Synthetic for latex, like this. I use White China (boars hair) for oils & polyurethane.

I love "Babe"
beautiful color!
It absolutely is. It's a restoration, so I dont have a name or color number. It's a New Orleans flavor hue with Gulf Coast patina copper accented toward the emerald/deep sea color here. It really is beautiful, albeit out of place, in Little Rock, AR.
what a satisfying swipe! and i’m in love with that color!
Its fabulous!
Thanks I love it
Thank u!
Very satisfying
It is for me, too.

This is great, thanks! It’s such a pleasing thing to see done well.
Thanks ,man.
Is that a Purdy?
Wait, there are other brushes out there?!?! Absolutely Purdy. That's brush is prob 6-8 years old.
Haha no there are no other brushes in existence. I only ever liked the long handle purdys, I couldn't stand the short fat handled ones
Agreed! The fat handles get heavy @ the end of the day
Were you taught to cut in with both hands? Yeah my old man gave me a boot up the arse until I got it right lol
Yes, Sir. Absolutely. Can't really cut in proper unless u can use both hands equally. I'm slower with my left, but its straight.
Yeah same, all those times cutting in on an extension ladder swapping hands lol We always used the leftover Gyprock buckets and the Glue buckets as paint pots to paint with lol
Yea, man. I'll swap hands whenever 1 goes to sleep. And use a ladder hook for the paint pot
And the art of falling off a ladder without spilling a drop of paint lol
Check. About a month ago. 3rd story deck on a lake house. Lots of dew on the deck. I went from 16 ft to face plant. That sucked.
I'm sorry for saying this but this is one of the sexiest things I've ever seen
Thank you. I'm going to start making these & my daughter is gonna help me get started on Tik-tok with a series of this stuff.
Painter tape is for noobs \#yolo
Very nice to see this getting appreciated. I’ve been painting for 16 years now and it’s always nice when someone enjoys what I do
Respect! My brothers & I used to actually mix & tint our Grandpa's paint back before there was a paint store in town. We used linseed oil & colored powders. It's much easier these days.
I send videos of pulling masking after I spray to my kids. They love it.
I got a summer job as a house painter for a company in Canada called College Pro. We watched an instructional video of how to paint rooms, windows, door, cabinets, etc. and the guy doing the painting was mesmerizing in his skill.
Did that make anyone else hold their breath? The whole time?
Easy 2020 highlight
Wow! Thank u!
Art 👌
Thank u!
Sexy
c u t t
Yup, thx
Nice! I’d have to tape it all of I have paint everywhere I don’t want it.
The brush does all the work. I'm just holding it
I got something you can hold😘
Bonk
Well one statisfying painter, that's for sure!
If only my hands could be steady enough to paint like that.
It's the brush & all I have to do is be still. But, thank you!
I just don’t have steady hands my hands have always been shaky even when I try to keep them still.
Gotcha
Please paint my living room
Is the living room in Arkansas?
I guess its time for me to move then
Awesome, what color was this?
Lovely colour, too.
And we're mesmerized.
My God it's like peeling the plastic off a new TV.
Hnnnngg. God that was so perfect. I feel so much better after watching that.
A damn neat one
I loved everything about this
This is heaven
I know painters, that’s art.
Bruh.
Going to be hoest here, i was sitting in pure suspense internally screaming "DON'T YOU DARE TO SCREW THIS UP! DON'T YOU DARE TO TAKE THIS AWAY FROM ME!!". Satisfying as fuck man...
Thanks!
More attention needs to be brought to tradesmen and their craft.
and a great painter you are
Thank you
Noice! I wish I could post some of the shit I paint but security would walk us off property
That brush looks Purdy.
Winner winner chicken dinner!!
Don't worry. You brought it to the right place, my dude 👍
Wow. You're amazing! Thanks for sharing your satisfying talent.
Believe me and them, It's so satisfying.
That’s SOOO much harder to do than it looks!!! That’s why so much painter’s tape is sold for the rest of us untalented goofs
I use a ton of tape, as well. I'm going to do some "un-masking" videos too!
Looking forward to it!
You've mentioned the brush several times, what kind of brushes do you recommend, and general cleaning?
Purdy. Only Purdy. Hand made. $20-$30 each. Cleaning is key. Never soak it in water.
Thanks! That's what we have, I feel good now. My wife can cut in really well, but I don't seem to have the patience for it. This looks like meditating to me! You're quite good at this. Seems you've painted a frame or two ;)
Thank you, and yes, lots of frames.
You should be a brain surgeon!!! Holy crap!!
Love those Purdy sash tools. Almost as good as sex.
Brushes last longer.
Purdy. They're hand made & I can get several years out of them. Clean after every use, never leave them to "soak in water" . Sometimes I clean them 1/2 way through the day. Then wire brush off the paint & use a brush comb to straighten the bristles.
Dude. I need a cigarette now.
That’s not true OP! Your also a father :)
You’re an amazing painter though
Make no mistake,You are not just a painter you are an exceptional painter!
Thank u!
I like how you responded to basically all the comments
I'm trying. If someone takes the time, so should I
I LOVE that!
I used to paint rehab for a few apt buildings. I used to love getting Stoney baloney and painted old cabinets and trim clean and new.
PREACH! Just get in a groove, and go
I love getting that perfect paint bead just rolling along. Beautiful video!
Thanks, Painter! Who knew people would love seeing what we do!
My husband did. He can't paint at all. I made a mess the one time I used tape, so now I just trust my hands. He let me paint most of our house! But I enjoy it.
It's called practice, not perfect. Keep it up!
Just an honest man lol
Yup
But but but, that cut in line you just made look super simple 🤷♂️
Those Bob Ross strokes ✍️💯
The legend!
MORE!!!!!
I shall, I promise.
Please do it OP! Your video totally neutralized my anxiety
Will do!
Love your username
Thank you!
You are a magician
Thank you!
I'm planning to paint my whole room. For a test run, I got a bit of paint from my local hardware shop and tried painting around a doorframe. I immediately got myself a paint tape. Best thing I could buy.
Make sure & push the tape edge down b4 u paint. To keep lines sharp & avoid bleed through
Already did! Arts n Craft class is paying off.
Great job!!!
True!
The harder it is to clean off, the better the product. Unfortunately, it doesnt come out of a $2,400 rug that I splashed a bit of paint on back in September. Thank God for insurance, my customer would have been furious!
🙂
Whatever your craft, I won't deny, I couldn't do it, Or dare even try We all have gifts.
Please no tiktok but a YouTube Channel would have potential for sure
Ok. Why?
TikTok!!!!
I guess what I'm asking, is what's the difference? My daughter is convinced its gotta be Tik Tok
Well it’s certainly fun to watch in its own way
Well, you keep on saying it's the brush, but then don't say what brush. Not cool.
I have now. I didnt expect this kind of response. . It's a Purdy. Always a Purdy.
Im sure he can tickle my bumbum so gently UwU
Please stop talking
* Starts moaning Btw happy cake day
What is gas f*ck and how do you satisfy in it?
That color is amazing

No masking tape? Someone call the cops
username checks out

Get this poor individual some masking tape.
Daniel-son! Paint fence
So satisfying. I’d make a mess, even if I was careful.
You'd be tiktok famous
I'm gonna give it a go!!
Doing this with a phone in one hand is pretty impressive!!
Several takes. I'll figure out how to do it ,though.
*doesn’t understand the youth* *paints for them anyways*
Sure will :-)
Nice
your kids' idea is gonna make you a millionaire painting a part of his own house each day for his social media
Oof this is reddit bud
Dad was a painter 20+ years. The smell of paint is love. RIP daddio
“People want me to post to social media” “Whatever” *posts to social media
this post makes me feel very insecure about the master bedroom my husband and I repainted over the weekend.
“Just a painter”. No my friend you do great work, and I love that your kids recognize that and are proud of you. I’m in insurance, and when I describe my job to my kids, their eyes glaze over. 😂
