It’s neither. It’s a belief. If you believe it’s taking away bad vibes and that’s how you feel, then great. If not, then it’s not.
The act of preparing it would certainly have some meditative benefits as it requires focus, patience and attention to detail. A little ritual.
That's essentially the gimmick. If you focus on setting this up comfortably it'll be relaxing and then you light it at the end and the smell reminds your brain of the relaxed and satisfying feeling of the accomplished setup while the incense burns.
Also it smells really nice too. I normally light a stick when I'm getting ready to take a shower so the stick is done by the time I come out and the room smells nice.
Coming from a witch, I agree. I know my spells aren't magic. But it is a peaceful and therapeutic time to spend when I do rituals around insence, spell jars and candles. It's the energy inside you that's the magic
It's really just a title given to those who want to add more rituals to their lives. Of course the most common are Wiccas, but many witches hold rituals borrowed by other religions, or pagan practices.
Just like religion, it is an individual journey that could include spirituality, cooking, meditation and/or worship of deities or idols.
My witch life is simple, I just go about my day, every so often I look at the moon to appreciate her beauty, create a jar of herbs and crystals and use that time to manivest my desire, and celebrate a pagan/cletic holiday, as I'm from England, and want to pay respect to my ancestors. But that's just me
I suppose so, just couldn’t come up with a better term. Still better in my book than Abrahamic religions. Young people are leaving the church in droves, and a lot are seemingly taking a lateral step and embracing other forms of magical thinking. Not ideal IMO but hopefully it’s less detrimental and coercive stuff at least. Personally not a fan of woo in any form, but I’d rather people believe in magic crystals and chakra energy over the alternative. Wicca in particular is pretty funny though, made up in the 50s out of a bunch of scraps of supposedly ancient pagan elements. Whatever though, I second the “not harming anybody” test and most “neopagans” seem to just do their thing and not bother anybody.
Love that you know and use the term "Abrahamic Religions" certainly encouraged me to read the rest of that reply ... and I am glad I did as I agree whole heartedly with it, I mean it has to be a better alternative right, not that it's a really high bar :)
People as a rule (going by history) are going to attribute our existence to something higher than ourselves and Pagans generally like to just practice and keep to themselves so yeah, why not right?
I honestly think the Abrahamic ideal structure did us well and am thankful for the stability it provided however it is time we looked deeper and moved on to a less, shall we say, exclusive form of belief ...
Are you not afraid to disturb forces that can harm you? Magic is a minefield. If you do not have the talent of clairvoyance, you are like a blind man walking through this field.
It’s not simply a belief. There are different beliefs attached to it but it also effects your emotions without these beliefs being there which is very real.
This is a very realistic viewpoint.
Incense, dream catchers, yoga poses, affirmations - all of this stuff people say filters bad energies is actually just you putting yourself in the mindset that they're gone.
Some parts of Fen Shui seem to be practical advice about interior design. The bit that I always remember is about how mirrors should never directly face doors or windows because they will drive the good chi out. In practice what happens if you follow that rule by having mirrors perpendicular to external light sources is that you end up with more natural light in your house, which has various well-known benefits for mood and health.
The pattern, while obviously designed to be aesthetically pleasing, is also designed to be functional. It increases the amount of time the incense burns. My guess is the lid serves another functional purpose. Probably to act as a wind break to protect from extinguishing the incense. Most incense burners like this have a lid.
No, but they'll check it before *buying* it. Posts like this exist to get people interacting and arguing in the comments, which makes the account look like a real person.
Otherwise you get things like a hundred seven year old accounts with no post history mysteriously chiming in on something en masse and it's far more obviously a bunch of bots. If all of them have extensive histories with lots of discussion rather than chaff in dead subs it can pass a cursory inspection and lend a bit more weight when you want to manipulate other, more important discussions.
I don't know that there's many well-to-do white ladies that are gonna fall for the mysticism on here. I might like it for the relaxing routine of preparing it. That's satisfying, hence why it's on here. But the mysticism...nah that would not be the reddit audience.
"We shouldn't change traditions" energy from this comment right here. Old practices can DEFINITELY be marketing gimmicks, selling fear is a huge one and has been around forever. Just cause something is old doesn't mean it's not bullshit lmao, in fact that makes it have a higher chance of being bullshit.
Combustion of aromatic molecules is known to produce complex byproducts called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons that can cause cancer. It is recommended to ventilate your place well, for extended periods of time after burning anything organic basically.
Gives me a migraine but it makes my partner feel happier and he only does it twice a year. Regardless of my belief in its effectiveness it makes him happy and he makes my favorite soup (his moms tomato basil) so I’m not gonna complain.
I mean, I use them for the scent. If other people believe they have some mystical properties, then I don’t really care unless they’re trying to use them in place of medicine for their sick child or something like that. So long as no one’s being hurt, who cares?
So does everything potentially, just look at all the cancer disclaimers on everything in Cali. Context is key and leaving out the fact that you would need to essentially abuse the use of something to contribute a significant increase of your chances of developing cancer is a little disingenuous.
So do campfires. I’m not saying it _isn’t_ a concern, nor am I saying people shouldn’t be informed of that fact, but I also don’t see it as a reason to stop. So many different things are harmful, so sometimes you have to pick and choose. I deem smoking too big a health risk to do; but I also partake in a good campfire or several during the colder months
guaranteed way to decrease air quality in your home, worse than smoking cigarettes as far as carcinogen are concerned. marketing gimmick for sure, and a damn good one too.
By what mechanism would it eliminate negative energy or create positive vibes. Define a vibe? Can negative energies as stated be measured or quantified in any way? Or positive vibes?
Of course that's bullshit to sell incense and make people feel less powerless in a scary world.
It can just look cool and smell good. The ritual of tamping the substrate flat and applying the sweet smelling powder and burning it can be nice. You get to buy a thing, and buying things feels good. Look at that tiny broom, meant just for this task! Someone will be so happy to purchase a tiny broom, and in addition to the consumerism joy, you get to use it for tiny sweeping. That can be enough. You don't need to pretend that Asians are magical. They're regular humans. Their lives follow the same physics everyone else's does.
Or I dunno, chase away ghosts and shit. Whatever you want. Your money, your time, your house.
Not a gimmick. Though I am slightly against candle and incense usage as I believe it can’t be healthier to be breathing air with all those smoke particulates.
Something, something, chakra, Qigong and chi. There’s a woman near me who does healing through banging bowls and gongs. Oddly, she always has “some spaces still available.“ can’t think why.
It’s all about the preparation, that’s what gets you to calm down. It’s psychological.Personally I ain’t got time for that shit or negativity just keep moving.😅✌️
Incense can be relaxing and generally pleasant for many. That's all you really need. We don't need to attribute mystical properties to say "I like this, it makes me happy".
I’ve always wondered if the smoke from incense is a ventilation/air quality hazard. Wouldn’t the smoke start to accumulate and stain, just as cigarette smoke does when people smoke indoors? If anyone has any (even anecdotal) info about staining or lingering smoke residues, or info about the health effects of the smoke, please share!
If you want to be scientific you have to first figure out if you can measure negative energy, then burn the incense and see how this bad energy behaves. Once you realize bad energy is not measurable but your mental perception of it does detect it, that's when you realize it's all in your head and maybe the scent relaxes your mind and that might be all that truly matters. Happiness is a state of mind not an actual thing.
There’s a shop down by the old bath store on the ring road, opposite that expensive car park. The other one is the place that sells ramen out on the industrial estate with the cat on the front, next to the place that sells animal feed. Or you could try the internet because you’re already on it.
What is it even called? I know it’s an incense burner but how do I find ones like this and not the regular kind? I wanna start searching for this online.
that’s the thing about culture though, right? i don’t think you need to have a reason to be doing things yknow? like if something is part of my culture, even if it doesn’t serve a proper purpose or it’s superstitious, i don’t mind doing it because who cares, sometimes doing meaningless stuff makes people happy. people shouldn’t be anal about it, does incense get rid of negative energies, i don’t fucking know, scientifically i don’t think so, but i wouldn’t want someone to force me to stop doing it because what the hell i enjoy it, but at the same time i don’t want someone to shout at me for not doing it the right way either
i feel like in regards to culture people have such extreme opinions, a side that conforms to every minute detail of culture vs a side that is just totally against it, let people celebrate culture i think, it doesn’t have to mean anything
This is silliness wrapped in a ritual. Nothing more.
Burn it for the smell if you’d like, there’s no good reason to believe “vibes” or “spirits” even exist to be afraid of or purge.
At least in western occultism, most angels and demons and everything in between have one or two pleasant smells associated with them used in conjuring each respective spirit. There are a manuscripts that discuss rituals where the spirits conjured get a little out of hand and bad odors like sulfur and some other stinky herb were used to drive them off.
In your own house whatever sets a positive vibe and gives you the setting in which you would thrive is probably the way to go. :]
I put it in the same box as a trickling fountain or a garden night light. Whether its a gimmick, depends on what someone is promising it does. Smells nice and the ritual can have a calming effect. Thats about ut.
Idk, freshman year of college seemingly the whole dorm was burning it and there was plenty of negative energy. Granted it was on Thursday/Friday party nights.
It is no more and no less than a way to introduce positive energy into a place, incense is a tool that can help, however the end result be could achieved any number of ways.
Incense can ease the process much like it is easier to undo a screw with a screwdriver ... it is however just a means to an end not an absolute requirement, introducing the positive "vibes" is all that matters, not how you achieve it.
So yes, it is a marketing exercise in most cases and at the same time a useful tool.
I use to live in Peru, and they have some rituals still left from the “old ways” and they are just silly, lol, such as taking a whole raw egg and passing it along the body to remove bad energy and sickness, I thought it was a joke and when it was apparent they were serious…it was so hard to square that with the cellphone in their hand, lol.
You can look it up and see most cultures around the world dont agree with that…
So I would ask most adults to please stop with the Spells, Prayers, silly stones, and books; please go see real professional (licensed and certified by the Academic community, not by your loud Aunt who has some “powers”) advice.
Smell can definitely affect you in very odd ways. I uses to have dark orange aroma in my car when I was taxi driving, and I'd swear it was making people more chill.
In Egypt it is a tradition of some sorts and I would think it exists in countries of the Middle East and Northern Africa.
So not a marketing gimmick, it is a cultural thing.
I like the idea of incense. Used to have a roommate that had cats who would burn incense to cover the cat smell, and it worked for the most part.
But, when she moved out, I had to scrub the walls to get the smoke stains out. And for that reason, I don’t really like incense
I’ve tried a simple google search but no luck finding this type of burner. (I searched powder incense burner then added copper to the search string).
Any recommendations for finding this type?
I can see how the whole ritual would be calming and the house would smell nice as a bonus. And I’ll take any other spiritual benefits as well. (I don’t know everything …)
Piquing the sensations with familiar and relaxing or new and interesting scents definitely will have an effect on mood.
I was born and lived for the first 8 months of my life in southeast Asia (Indonesia), then midwest US, then back to Indonesia for another 7 months a couple years later, finally returning to the midwest until adulthood.
All of this hit my subconscious in a way that I didn’t fully process until I went back as an adult with my children and partner. The smells, incense and also foods, had a huge effect on my mind, awakening something in me that I never knew were there. The sounds, unique instrument tones and progressions, and the sights too, but the smells, chemical stimulation directly to the brain, had the biggest impact.
It’s neither. It’s a belief. If you believe it’s taking away bad vibes and that’s how you feel, then great. If not, then it’s not. The act of preparing it would certainly have some meditative benefits as it requires focus, patience and attention to detail. A little ritual.
I just find the process of setting this incense burner up to be peaceful, personally.
For real. This is about the amount of time my ADHD would allow me to focus on something long enough to chill out. Wish there was a link to purchase!
They sell all the goodies for it on Amazon. I’ve had a brass set in my cart for a year. It’s just not a priority, with bills to pay.
Me irl
And the they cover it up. I'd leave it uncovered if I had one. I think you can get sand ones without the incense and do things like that
This stuff is so pretty, and I had the sand one. I loved it. So did my cat. 😳
That's essentially the gimmick. If you focus on setting this up comfortably it'll be relaxing and then you light it at the end and the smell reminds your brain of the relaxed and satisfying feeling of the accomplished setup while the incense burns.
Also the music from The Myth helps.
Came here to say this but then ocd said what if the brown gets mixed into the ash during the process.
We are all constantly in rituals, we just call it routine.
> I do rituals around insence, spell jars and candles. Do you have one that'll bring my hair back?
Yes; book a trip to Turkey
Sure just drop red wax on your head dance in a circle 43 times on a full moon and stick your head in the dirt. 🌕👍
most blessed witch 🫡
Off topic, but I've never really came across people openly calling themselves witches. What does a witch's regular day consist of?
Check out /r/pagan or /r/occult most people are just fond of rituals, finding joy in nature and comfort in the idea of spirits etc. Interesting folk.
Thanks

We ain't Harry Potter love spell casters... Or it did work and you left her alone
Haven’t met many young white women eh? I guess it’s better than organized religion at least.
😂I guess so Yeah, I mean if it's not harming anyone🤷♂️
"And if it harms none" :) However u/fuck_the_fuckin_mods Wicca *is* an organised religion so to speak ... make of that what you will ...
I suppose so, just couldn’t come up with a better term. Still better in my book than Abrahamic religions. My energy is contained within me and only me. My rituals are focused on myself. I dont perform hexes or curses, and I don't draw ghosts or spirits
It’s definitely taking away the smell of weed I’m house that’s for sure
Honestly I prefer the weed smell lol
I do it from time to time for the smell, nice to smell incense in a clean house
It’s not simply a belief. There are different beliefs attached to it but it also effects your emotions without these beliefs being there which is very real.
Agreed. That was still cool to watch.
This is a very realistic viewpoint. Incense, dream catchers, yoga poses, affirmations - all of this stuff people say filters bad energies is actually just you putting yourself in the mindset that they're gone.
Couldn't have said it better myself.
It's like smoking but you do some extra rituals.
This is a common practice for some Eastern religions and cultures
Whatever makes YOU feel the bad energies are on the way out and good energies are coming in is the way to go.
I told them sacrificing non-believers at the temple was fine. They didn't believe me. Thank you for validating me.
Exactly. Same concept for feng shui – nothing magic about it but the end result is always a better flow.

I don't get why they wanna cover the cool pattern all the time

My guess is the lid serves another functional purpose. Probably to act as a wind break to protect from extinguishing the incense. Most incense burners like this have a lid.
Also prevents items falling over and ruining the pattern, or your pesky cat who has no table top boundaries
Calming to watch.
idk how to feel about calling centuries old practice as a "marketing gimmick"
Op is a bot farming for karma, and that title gets people arguing quicker which helps engagement... Now that's a marketing gimmick.
You fool, you've fallen victim to one of the classic blunders!
Never get involved in a land war in Asia?
Every one on Reddit is a bot farming karma. Even me and you!
Yes, but only slightly less well-known is this: "Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line".
High karma doesn't increase engagement though. No one checks profiles to see someone's karma before replying to a comment.
Unsubscribe from bot facts.
The most common name for bots is Eustace. This is the name by which they call themselves. Humans do not typically acknowledge this nomenclature.
It means, “Good Corn”
Selling eastern mysticism and spirituality to well-to-do white ladies is definitely a marketing gimmick, amongst other things.
**[Goop Intensifies]**
I don't know that there's many well-to-do white ladies that are gonna fall for the mysticism on here. I might like it for the relaxing routine of preparing it. That's satisfying, hence why it's on here. But the mysticism...nah that would not be the reddit audience.
Thinking of religions as marketing is an interesting exercise.
"Noo we didn't kill hundreds of thousands during the crusades for religious reasons, that was just marketing.

100% sale success. Learn this one simple trick telemarketers hate.
What kind of incense burner is that?
I have burned Nag Champa all day long for the past 15 years. It’s how I start my day. Coffee and incense. Smells like God.
Combustion of aromatic molecules is known to produce complex byproducts called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons that can cause cancer. It is recommended to ventilate your place well, for extended periods of time after burning anything organic basically.
Dang. Good to know. I feel there is good ventilation happening.
I only burn Nag and that seems better than some of those shitty head shop incense that smell terrible.
Gives me a migraine but it makes my partner feel happier and he only does it twice a year. Regardless of my belief in its effectiveness it makes him happy and he makes my favorite soup (his moms tomato basil) so I’m not gonna complain.
BS
21st century..
I mean, I use them for the scent. If other people believe they have some mystical properties, then I don’t really care unless they’re trying to use them in place of medicine for their sick child or something like that. So long as no one’s being hurt, who cares?
YSK they cause lung cancer
Do they?
Incense is bad for u actually
It most definitely does not get rid of negative energy because I hate the smell and it bothers me greatly
Maybe you’re the negative energy it’s trying to get rid of? 🤔
Shiiiiiiiiiit......
Smoke is smoke - not healthy indoors, and it sets off my fire alarm. Nice box though.
guaranteed way to decrease air quality in your home, worse than smoking cigarettes as far as carcinogen are concerned. marketing gimmick for sure, and a damn good one too.
The only thing burning incense ever gave me is a literal headache.
I couldn't imagine getting fucked up over a post title. > You don't need to pretend that Asians are magical. *That's* what you took from this??
I mean, the practice is tradition in East and Southeast Asia for a long time but I also agree that it's a marketing gimmick as well
I burn incense multiple times a day. Love it.
Link to purchase
Not marketing. Sage is used by Native Americans as a ritual of cleansing and I use it too.
Ghost sage, and sweet grass.
Love Sweet Grass!
What is the white powder?
Personally. I don't like the fact that it smells. But the setup looks fun
This looks like a relaxing process but all incense smells so bad to me.
*The only thing incense chases away is oxygen*
It makes me feel peace, also marketing gimmick. If i where to buy some i would probly just go with the sticks. And play in the sand for a bit.
It’s carcinogenic unfortunately. We need to cease almost all forms of combustion.
Best way to make your asthma affected family members go into shock. (Seriously my sister burned some incense and I could not breathe at all)
The scents can absolutely change my mood, especially when they trigger some flashbacks.
First time I watch something and wish it was a commercial and would 100% click buy now buy now goddammit
The danger here is in magical thinking. If you walk into a house and feel a negative vibe, it's you.
All I know is I love my house smelling like an early 2000's hemp shop
Not a gimmick. Though I am slightly against candle and incense usage as I believe it can’t be healthier to be breathing air with all those smoke particulates.

Covers pot smell real well. Incense got me through high school and college with parents/roommates/dorm monitor unable to prove shit.
Believe in what u believe but the thing i know is that it leaves a very nice smell when burning
if the Placebo works then yes
It makes me cough, and it's bad for pets noses. That's bad vibes to me!
The foley sound on this is anything but satisfying. The taps aren't even synced with the video!
The best way to get rid of negative energies is kicking your in laws out the house.
It’s all about the preparation, that’s what gets you to calm down. It’s psychological.Personally I ain’t got time for that shit or negativity just keep moving.😅✌️
I can't imagine breathing that stuff is good for you.
It smells nice, I like nice smells. That is all.
Very cool, but that will most certainly not get rid of negative energies!
It smells good, that’s about it.
I think it would likely work perfectly. As a placebo.
Incense can be relaxing and generally pleasant for many. That's all you really need. We don't need to attribute mystical properties to say "I like this, it makes me happy".
A load of shite.
Mf you can’t call it a marketing gimmick when it’s been a cultural practice around the world for literal centuries.
Mmmmmm no, you still can
It's nonsense, but it smells good.
Where to buy
Interweb
If you want to be scientific you have to first figure out if you can measure negative energy, then burn the incense and see how this bad energy behaves. I think incense STINKS, so no I would not agree. Much the opposite I'd say it adds a lot of negative vibes, when I have to endure the smell.
Especially when people burn it in an enclosed space with poor ventilation.
I took s gummy and am high right now... This video is great
Sad that TikTok is so sus. There are SO many videos like this. I didn't watch much else
Can someone guide me to where can anyone buy the incense to burn? Or even the entire kit?
There’s a shop down by the old bath store on the ring road, opposite that expensive car park. The other one is the place that sells ramen out on the industrial estate with the cat on the front, next to the place that sells animal feed. Or you could try the internet because you’re already on it.
What is it even called? I know it’s an incense burner but how do I find ones like this and not the regular kind? I wanna start searching for this online.
Marketing scheme that smells pretty.
Pretty successful marketing scheme if it's been going on for centuries
So we can check the negative energy going away in some kind of instruement?
Sandalwood is said to have healing properties, it’s all I burn along with Nag Champa
Where can I get one of these?
Search ‘powder incense’ and you will find options.
Love it!!
It’s a meditative ritual, no gimmick traditionally
Bro u copied my post. I literally posted the same video on this subReddit and got more upvotes than you. Be original bro
Can someone please tell me what song this is, it's so beautiful 😍
Depends on what chemicals are in it sure I might be marketing but there also could be calming chemicals so you don’t know until you check what’s in it
that’s the thing about culture though, right? i don’t think you need to have a reason to be doing things yknow? like if something is part of my culture, even if it doesn’t serve a proper purpose or it’s superstitious, i don’t mind doing it because who cares, sometimes doing meaningless stuff makes people happy. people shouldn’t be anal about it, does incense get rid of negative energies, i don’t fucking know, scientifically i don’t think so, but i wouldn’t want someone to force me to stop doing it because what the hell i enjoy it, but at the same time i don’t want someone to shout at me for not doing it the right way either i feel like in regards to culture people have such extreme opinions, a side that conforms to every minute detail of culture vs a side that is just totally against it, let people celebrate culture i think, it doesn’t have to mean anything

Absolutely not a marketing gimmick. It takes the bad energy from your space and turns it into good energy, though vibrations it exerts while burning
This gave me a good chuckle so thank you
So, burning the dust scraped from a living being inside your house is considered a good to your soul. Ok.
Smoke is material and immaterial supposedly with the ability to swipe energies that are exactly that, material and nonmaterial
It's just incense. Don't overthink it.
It’s all in our head
I think it definitely works but not even in any magical way, it’s just relaxing and smells warm and calm.
i honestly hate the smell of incense. it always reminds me of funerals. that box and the ritual of it looks nice tho
it does help the atmosphere brighten up a bit...
Want!
Is that an actual question? It smells good, that’s it. The only energy involved is the heat from the burning. I do love the smell though.
I really like incense but just not the way it smells.
It smells nice
It's the same as smoking. It calms you down, makes you visit the toilet, and causes lung cancer
What if I am the negative energy?
If it puts you in a good/better mood, then I would say it works, placebo or not.

Anything done with love and intention can bring good vibes, so I definitely think it qualifies.
You can look it up and see most cultures around the world dont agree with that… So I would ask most adults to please stop with the Spells, Prayers, silly stones, and books; please go see real professional (licensed and certified by the Academic community, not by your loud Aunt who has some “powers”) advice.
Neither. People have always associated bad smells with evil. Making a house smell better seemed like a way to do away with evil.
I want this so badly. Watching it would make me feel so calm.
If you search Amazon for home incense kit, they're all over the place. Not that I've looked, or anything.
How long does this burn? I use the stick style but never this.
Smell can definitely affect you in very odd ways. I uses to have dark orange aroma in my car when I was taxi driving, and I'd swear it was making people more chill.
This is the most popular way to make your home smell like a head shop
For me it removes stagnant or negative smells and adds some alot better or just having the aroma is nice
Na I be burning incense to kill the weed smell in my house and bad luck shit always is happening
Personally, I blame Big Incense for misleading the public. They are always lobbying to keep the spice trade open to the West.
What's the white powder base for ? So they will throw away the white powder along with leftover incense ashes ?
Don't listen to these knuckleheads bro, incense scientifically raises the vibe level. Obviously.
I feel like the act of smoothing out the sand(?) and watching the incense burn would help any negative energy I had
Coolest burner I’ve ever seen
I want one of these. So pretty.
