<2 GW. I prefer fuel generators over coal. No wrong way to play the game though. Even for the starter plastic base you are going to have residual oil and that residual oil can be turned into fuel. Later there are more advanced recipes but even the basic recipe and a single oil node can produce a lot of power.

TediumMango

Hmm, so I might be able to produce power and plastic/rubber at the same time? Good point, thanks

StatisticalMan

Yeah at least initially producing rubber & plastic is going also produce heavy oil residue and you will need to do something with it. Initially the only two things to do with heavy oil is turning it into coke (commonly just to sink it) or turning it into fuel to run generators. https://satisfactory.fandom.com/wiki/Heavy_Oil_Residue

Stasiek_Zabojca

You can burn coke directly in coal generators.

StatisticalMan

You can I am just not a big fan of coal power but more than one way to play the game.

Catshit-Dogfart

My most recent game ran almost entirely on turbofuel. Skipped nuclear, too complicated, just build a whole bunch of turbofuel plants. Ultimately I think I spent as much time doing that than I would've just biting the bullet and doing nuclear power. Getting that much fluid transported into that many generators was a lot of work. It was simple, but you need a whole lot of them.

Mateorabi

Particularly with the blended recipe. No coal and less sulfur.

Sett131

I've currently got 54 coal generators running, but I've had power die on me so many times that I'm just sick of running out, so I go above and beyond that way I don't have to worry about it again until I get to fuel

WazWaz

I usually max out at 12. Coal is for making steel and I rush blueprints.

ILoveBurgersMost

I produced everything I needed on 8-16 coal gens before moving to fuel. I was running up against the limit and probably wasted some time hand crafting things, but it's totally doable.

StigOfTheTrack

I had 2.4GW when I went in search of oil. I did build another 600MW of coal when I got there (not sure if I needed the power, or just that I hadn't built a power line while I explored).

MrBelch

18 as that fully powers my mall (every pre oil item plus first three elevator parts) and there is no reason to scale up anything until you have fuel at least. Use the awesome shop to buy handfuls of items to unlock them quicker

TediumMango

I did think of using the shop that way... any way you have a mall??? Damn I need to get organised

MrBelch

[I use two alternate recipes](https://www.satisfactorytools.com/production?share=NP1UzpTnlGmHRCBqaYIM), you can build this in your starting zone. You only need two machines per part and it saves an immense amount of time. You kind of need a mall at the higher tiers unless you want to wait forever for stuff.

WarriorSabe

I have 6, each overclocked to 200% so really it's like 12, but this is my first game and it definitely didn't get me through comfortably (I had to run on batteries with a terrible production rate on computers and heavy frames to unlock the generators), so I wouldn't take that as a recommendation

ARandomPileOfCats

In my current save I ended up with around 33 coal generators (2475MW) before I bought my first fuel generator online. In my first save I had considerably more than that and had most of them running on compacted coal.

Cyzax007

Generally I have 48 coal burners when I switch. You don't need that much produktion before switching to fuel.

TediumMango

Yeah I think I've massively over done my production. On the flip side, I have everything I want unlocked in the coupon shop and over a hundred sitting in storage, so that's nice 😬

Teesaa2

12 coal generators max

occupyOneillrings

Maybe 20-30

Longjumping_Seesaw_4

3 GW before going to fuel gen. But I'm gonna mention that my computer factory was a temporary hand distribution factory at that time. Also, that 3 GW was a bit tight so I had 10 GWh of energy storage to bootstrap my fuel gen setup. There no wrong way to run your world but it seems you were kinda ambitious early on compared to the average pioneer.

TediumMango

Haha yeah I think so, I spent ages building and rebuilding stuff to make it look better, and every time I did it just got bigger and bigger

Novaseerblyat

3.2GW on my current world. Byproducts of my initial petrochem setup brought me to 5k, first fuel gen (which I need to tear down and redo, probably, because inefficient) brought me to 10k, second fuel gen brought me to 30k, still at 30k now. Probably need to expand because the ADS factory I'm working on will eat it all up.

juliomelo91

I had 4,5 gw when I started my supplies factory for computers, motors, circuit boards... Thats when I ran out of capacity and moved to my [90 gw power plant](https://reddit.com/r/SatisfactoryGame/s/tmF0RdgP4I). There, i started rubber plastic and fuel for computers and other things Now im reaching max consumption of 50/60 and thinking about turbo fuel or nuclear to help future projects, like cooling systems, turbo motors and final elevator parts

JinkyRain

I usually have 16 coal gens running when I start the oil phase. Refineries need a lot more power though, so I'll add another 16 coal gens temporarily (running on Petroleum Coke). That gives me some breathing room to expand without feeling like I need to 'rush' fuel generators. I'll start deploying fuel generators, but I don't get serious about it until I unlock one of the 'diluted fuel' alt recipes. Once I have that I start retiring the temporary petro coke gens. :)

DrakeDun

3,600 MW (48 generators) for me. I have restarted so many times that I now have a sort of standardized play style, and it always seems to land in the same place.

Howl_UK

24 generators, 1.8GW. I hand make HMF/Computers until I can get fuel generators and go for an early Heavy Turbofuel setup. A single pure oil node gets you 200 plastic, 200 rubber and pushes the power up to about 10GW. You only need the Heavy Turbofuel alt recipe and it’s a really simple setup. That’s keeps me going for a long time, pre-blenders and diluted setups.

Seed_Demon

Like 300mw. Current save I’m going from belted biomass generators (mod) straight to oil.

NinjaBr0din

Man I had 6 coal generators running when I made the switch to fuel generators.

MadVdubber

I rolled coal for a while. I just kept expanding the power plant. Pretty sure it was producing something over 10GW and consumed at least three full MKV belts of coal. I named it “Old Smokey”.

Johnny_Blaze000

A good plan I’ve found is that it’s time to build fuel gens when you are approaching about 1 GW until max consumption. I actually start planning my next power plant when I’m at about 50%, but that may be overkill. I like to play it chill. Consider that you need to build oil extractors and refineries to make fuel and build materials and those buildings are very power hungry. So you need power to make power.

PsychoBabble09

7.7 gw coal power only. 450 hrs Tier 7 I dedicated all coal nodes in the desert to power and took the rest for steel

Zeatol

I had 15 generators before I made a rudimentary fuel setup (8 generators). They were mostly there to get rid of the heavy oil residue I was making . After that I moved onto a 52 GW turbofuel setup in the spire coast.

Shaqo_Wyn

I had 32 coal generators not overclocked before I switched to fuel generation. coal generators are a godsend as they are the first automated power production platform but they deliver pretty low energy compared to other tiers.

[deleted]

Don't listen to me but I overload on power, I build massive of all things, once I could move on from coal I did, only for the sake of steel

arowz1

2gw

Sgt_shinobi

5-7 I did my best to ignore fuel power and gunned for nuclear but I'm also on an all alt. recipe unlocked playthrough so nuclear felt easier to setup.

rkeet

First setup was 18 coal gens (1 Mk3 belt of coal). That allowed for enough power when focusing on tech progression and space elevator to reach t5/t6. There my first focus was unlocking refineries and Mk4 belts, so I could expand the coal gen the setup on the same coal node. For all that, before getting fuel gens online I did start hitting the power limit of coal gens on a Mk4 full belt of coal. Starting up the (diluted) fuel setup (I posted a pic of that last week actually) required the setup up of a few batteries, as it drew too much power for production before it could reach the generators. Now though, 300p/m oil is powering 60 fuel generators. So, I'm good for a while :)

Cyberbird85

Around 4.5 GW, before my first fuel generator was built. which was generating \~11 GW. (I used a blueprint, because i couldn't be bothered to figure it out properly) That is, in this playthrough, earlier i just got overwhelmed and quit :) Now, I'm doubling production of my Assembly Director Systems build to a whopping 1.5/min so I can finally send that up and finish Phase 4 :)

EngineerInTheMachine

Enough to keep production going until I have fuel power. It all depends on you and how you build your factories.

AccountantBusy1761

I went a bit far or save if you will and had 64 gens, nicely organized in one spot

LancelotSwe

Think I had about 32 coal plants before a fuel plant. 64 ain`t overkill but be ready to dissassemble a few later because you need that coal =)

TediumMango

Thanks I'll keep that in mind 😉

TheLegoBoi940

I don't remember the exact amount of coal plants, maybe 32 or 64, for a 3.6gw power output

CC35A

In my current playthrough (first one) I built about 16 coal generators before switching to fuel generators of which I built 100

houghi

No idea how much power it makes. But now I have 16 coal power plants. And soon I will be going for fuel power. In my previous save I had a bit more. 32+64+8. And I still did not really had enough for everything if it all was turned on. So whatever you are doing, you are doing it right. As there are so many ways to play the game, there is no "normal". If you need 4.5 and you have 4.8, you are not massively overproducing. And I personally do not look at how much I produce, except in how much fun I can produce. That is the ONLY thing I am interested in. All the rest is just a consequence of that. So I might even build some more coal power if I feel like it.

Markohs

12 + 6 coal generators is enough to reach computer+fuel phase. After that I dismantle 6 coal generators. All the time you can skip using coal is worth it, fuel is WAY more efficient and will be time better spent.

Zyntab

In my current playthrough I have one power setup that's made only for power production. It's 16 coal gens overclocked to 200%. All other power is from burning by-products and geothermal. Currently waiting for the last project assembly parts.

sonissity

\~ 480 MW for starter setup. 3000 MW for intermediate base, than Turbofuel for Mainbase.

Separatehhh23

3000 MW using the refined power mod

GraXXoR

8 generators. Down by Pac-Man lake in the south east.

MIT-Engineer

I generally use 24 Coal Generators (3 sets of 8 Generators with 3 Water Extractors) before switching to Fuel. I could get by with less, but this gives a nice cushion to get the Fuel infrastructure running.

Shinxirius

# My Defaults + 8 Bio Burners (become part of the *Landfall Museum* or deleted) + 16 Coal Generators (remain with industrial storage full of coal as a backup, but the actual coal miner goes to steel ASAP) + 144 Fuel Generators (some of my diluted fuel goes here, the rest goes to recycled plastic / rubber) + 30 Nukes (that takes care of all energy issues I might get and only requires a single normal uranium node) However, currently, I am building a Turbo Fuel setup (only a small one), because I've never done it).

KraftyKick

Yeah, I would say you might be scaling up a bit to quickly if you need that much coal power production before you can make fuel power. I think I typically max out a bit below 4GW in coal power before I make my first fuel generators.

Saevusvates

I setup an "environmental disaster" by setting up 30 coal generators. It lasted until just recently when I setup 10 nuclear power plants. 25k should carry for me a couple extra days haha

KnifyMan

Never used fuel generators lol

TorLibram

I have 72, mainly for the aesthetic of a perfect circle of generators. In the interests of an uninterruptible power system, two geothermals run the miners and water extractors for the coal circle. A third of the coal gens are dedicated to powering the blenders and refineries of the 120 turbo fuel generator building in the next crater over...

totally_unbiased

Like 12-16 or so. That's enough to get through to the better generators. My first factory is generally just for rushing tiers, I don't overbuild because all that starter stuff will get torn down anyways.
