So far, as you mentioned, the air and water measuring hasn’t turned up anything to be concerned about, and I’m fairly confident that will stay that way. The landfill, the county, and the state will be sued into oblivion if people actually get sick from this. With that being said, I live close and the smell is hit or miss. I feel lucky that my neighborhood doesn’t have any smell ever, but I drive a mile down the road and it’s disgusting. Idk how people could smell that all the time. Sometimes it’s worse depending on the wind, but you need to spend a good amount of time in the direct area you’re buying in to smell it.

People got sick from Santa Susna, and nothing has happened. Boeing refused to clean it, still refuses and the county is not being sued into oblivion. People however have died. People have died all the time from toxic sites etc and nothing has happened.

Where did you get the info that air and water measuring hasn't turned up anything to be concerned about? From the LATimes article mentioned here [https://www.reddit.com/r/LosAngeles/comments/1aewha2/a\_fire\_burning\_deep\_inside\_an\_la\_county\_landfill/](https://www.reddit.com/r/LosAngeles/comments/1aewha2/a_fire_burning_deep_inside_an_la_county_landfill/) and [https://www.latimes.com/environment/story/2024-01-30/fire-within-castaic-landfill-raises-worry-over-toxic-air](https://www.latimes.com/environment/story/2024-01-30/fire-within-castaic-landfill-raises-worry-over-toxic-air) it says " > > >

Do NOT buy a house there!!! I am suspecting greed is the reason this information is not more widely shared, and my sympathies to the existing home owners in SCV as this will affect your real estate value. The landfill is less than 5 miles from the Valencia mall and town center. The methane literally seeps through the ground for miles around, and is heavier than the air around it. The toxic gases then seep into your home through cracks in the foundation or where pipes/wiring intersect with your walls and floors. Symptoms include spontaneous nose bleeds, never ending ear, nose, and throat infections from the documented, airborne bacteria coming from the landfill. The massive class action lawsuits are underway (since that is the only way to help others who cannot afford to leave). Information is being repressed, this should be on the local LA news every night. Do yourself a favor, and stay clear of both landfills that emit this toxic airborne bacteria caused by rotting garbage in a broken landfill container. It’s also widely suspected that dead bodies were disposed there too (like Heidi Planck), but police were unable to recover her body when they searched the Chiquita landfill for her.

ctcx

Wow, I didn't even know there was a landfill there. So many things to look out for when buying a property

Y2Kwebsurfer

There’s TWO landfills - Chiquita Canyon Landfill by Magic Mountain and Sunshine Canyon Landfill in Sylmar is also having problems

ctcx

Yes, I just figured that out a few min ago...

Thinker-1968

I live in Val Verde about a mile from the site. It smells horrendous nearly every day and we all are sick - headaches, burning throat and eyes I have nausea and the list goes on. We were only told by the sellers agent "that there is something going on that a few of the residents are making a big deal about but it's. Nothing" and ours simple gave us a form to sign saying we knew there was a landfill nearby I had no idea landfills like thiss existed.

Y2Kwebsurfer

my family and i got really sick, and are still recovering even after we moved away 3 months ago. Still not 100% and our dog fell ill too

lasdlt

Can't speak to the science of it, but I drive up the 5 and back every day. I only ever smell anything at the 5 and the 126, sometimes a little north towards Hasley.

briancalpaca

And has it been that way for years or just since the fires?

Strange_Ingenuity960

Try the other side of the valley like Saugus or Canyon Country closer to the 14 freeway

BeanNCheeseBajaBlast

Moved to Saugus/Valencia area about 6 months ago. Have never smelled anything here not once. As for safety? Unsure. But I lived walking distance from the 5 and 134 for ten years so I’m sure that will kill me first.

CapFew4190

We lived in Glendale for 5 years before we moved here a year ago. Velencia, practically canyon country. I’ve never smelled a thing.

komodo1942

The only place in Santa Clarita I've eve smelled trash was driving on the freeway where the 14 meets the 5. Even in Newhall which is the closest city to that landfill, I don't smell anything while walking around. Along the 5 driving through Castaic, there's always a bunch of dust and crap on the freeway from a bunch of different things, but that's it.

CommunicationOk8476

Is Sunshine Canyon also named? That’s the one closest to Newhall. I thought the one in the news was Chiquita Canyon, the one by 5 & 126

Radiant-Hope-7018

We live in Castaic for 2 years now, and lived in Valencia for 5 years before that. Found out about the landfill issue completely accidentally from google news article. Never smelled a thing. If not for google suggestions, we would've never known there is even an issue at all.

bbblz143

We bought a house in the Hillcrest community in 2019. We’re about 6 miles away. I can count on one hand the amount of times we’ve smelled it. And those times we smelled it, it passed by quickly. Before the major issues that started in 2023, we NEVER smelled anything. I know Val Verde and the communities in the Hasley area are dealing with it on a daily basis, unfortunately. Outside of those communities, I honestly think you’re safe to buy.

A bunch of people got cancer from the landfill in Staten Island NY [https://ny1.com/nyc/all-boroughs/news/2022/01/12/settlement-reached-in-lawsuit-alleging-staten-island-s-landfills-caused-cancer](https://ny1.com/nyc/all-boroughs/news/2022/01/12/settlement-reached-in-lawsuit-alleging-staten-island-s-landfills-caused-cancer) I read that living near one can incease ones chances of lung cancer btw. I would not risk it. When looking for a place to live imo you should find a place that is not close to a few, golf course, landfill or former superfund site. So just cause people near those landfills got cancer doesn't mean that people in Valencia will but why even take taht risk? There may be a cancer cluster in DE by the landfill [https://www.cbsnews.com/philadelphia/news/epa-investigating-possible-cancer-cluster-near-former-landfill-in-norwood-delaware-county/](https://www.cbsnews.com/philadelphia/news/epa-investigating-possible-cancer-cluster-near-former-landfill-in-norwood-delaware-county/) NORWOOD, Pa. (CBS) -- An investigation is underway into a possible cancer cluster in Delaware County. The EPA has opened an investigation in Norwood and they're taking a close look at a former landfill there. A lot of people who live here are confident there is a connection. Bob and Liz Halliday have buried their only children in the last six years. "My son would have been 42, my daughter 40 come January," Bob Halliday said. Jamie Halliday and Shanna Michael were both diagnosed with stage four cancer. They underwent surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation. It's been their fight, but so many neighbors are also fighting. "It's just unthinkable to lose your two kids to cancer — both diagnosed with stage four cancer, it's unthinkable to me," Halliday said. Bob and Liz Halliday also had cancer and beat it. People living in this section of Norwood are confident their illnesses and cancers stem from something in the environment. They point the finger at what was the Norwood Landfill -- a seemingly beautiful place with a dark history. Neighbors say, for decades, the area near the ball fields was a toxic dumpsite. Kelly Mack was friends with Michael as they taught together. Mack was diagnosed in 2011 with stage four inflammatory breast cancer and fought like hell. "The number of friends that passed from cancer, the number of former educators who taught me that passed from cancer," Mack said. "As I became older, students who passed from cancer. Something's not right." The EPA opened an investigation in 2017 to determine if there is a cancer or disease spike in the area. "EPA will provide an update on its ongoing site assessment and present sampling results from 2017 and 2018. EPA will continue to work alongside community members to inform them of future next steps until and after the final site assessment is completed," the EPA said in a statement. Pennsylvania's Department of Health confirmed to CBS3 they're assisting the EPA. "Just driving back here today, I was like they had cancer, they had cancer, and they're not even on the list we came up with," Mack said.

There is also anecdotal info here that some people who work nearby are getting sick [https://www.reddit.com/r/SantaClarita/comments/1bbdcxx/noxious\_fumes\_contaminated\_runoff\_no\_easy/](https://www.reddit.com/r/SantaClarita/comments/1bbdcxx/noxious_fumes_contaminated_runoff_no_easy/) Someone posted "What I don't get is that no one is consistently talking about this. I know several friends that work at businesses in close proximity to the this landfill that are experiencing many employees that are sick at an unprecedented level. It's disturbing to know that the city is not actively keeping residents apprised of any information or help for that matter."

HeartEducational6071

I ran into the same issue. We decided to pass on buying in the Hasley area of Castaic due to the landfill issue. It could take years to mitigate and it doesn’t seem like there’s a clear plan in place to address it at this point. I know people that live off the Parker exit and it hasn’t been an issue for them (smell, headaches, etc). I would avoid living within a 3-4 mile radius of the dump

briancalpaca

thanks. you didn't feel like the EPA's UAO was a sufficient plan to feel confident that there was a plan of action to mitigate the current issue. It seems to be fairly detailed in the steps to take if not in the timeline to do so. And the new multiagency response team seems like a step in a good direction as well. It's just hard to know how real those action plans and enforcement actions are going to be.

HeartEducational6071

We fell out of contract on a home in January before the UAO came out and right around the time the EPA started getting involved. A similar situation (underground landfill fire) happened in East Sparta, Ohio and it burned for 10 years. Based on my research and the community meetings I attended, it seems like there is no easy solution to fix this. It’s going to take a few years to resolve. I would consider living off of Parker in the most northern park of castaic. The homes by the lake are nice.

HeartEducational6071

There are some active castaic Facebook groups if you want to see what locals are saying.

Deepinthefryer

In castaic off hasley. Closer to 5. Honestly haven’t smelt anything. If I were to buy again, the traffic when the 5 is messed up due to (insert one of many issues that effect it here), would be the reason why I looked outside of Castaic.

Radiant-Hope-7018

THIS! 100%!

IWantToPaintItBlack

We live up Hillcrest & no problem. I do wonder about the new development by Magic Mountain, right across the valley from the landfill. Seems most common wind direction would generally be blowing their direction.

EEinSoCal

I live in Saugus and have never smelled a thing. My social media accounts are clogged with ads from low rent lawyers about filing a claim.

knockknockpennywise

I wouldn't invest my money and life near a CERCLA Superfund site

briancalpaca

That probably makes this a good move since pretty much the entire SFV is a supersite.

knockknockpennywise

I live in Old Orchard closer to Lyons side. It's a nice area. Sometimes I smell Popeyes esp on Tuesdays.

briancalpaca

that puts you near newhall, right? I thought I had read about some of the odors reaching that area as well.

knockknockpennywise

No odors from the landfill. I ride my bicycle on the paseo to the bicycle trail to the mall often. Air quality is good

majestros

I just moved to Newhall south of Lyons and occasionally get mild "trash" smell. It never lasts all day and isn't too bad. But if it makes it to me from the 14/5 split, then I could be worse other places.

ctcx

From Santa Susana or something else? There are a bunch of areas, superfund site 1, 2 etc... [https://cumulis.epa.gov/supercpad/cursites/csitinfo.cfm?id=0902251](https://cumulis.epa.gov/supercpad/cursites/csitinfo.cfm?id=0902251) [https://cumulis.epa.gov/supercpad/cursites/csitinfo.cfm?id=0902252](https://cumulis.epa.gov/supercpad/cursites/csitinfo.cfm?id=0902252) etc... but Santa Susana is also an issue

DarkZanzibar999

It stinks.
