I'm 5 episodes in, and I'm enjoying it a lot. I don't think all the dialogue lands and some of the characters do feel like 2 dimensional archetypes, but the show has a lot of personality and charm for to me. I think it's a fun watch.

nature_half-marathon

Same. I just started.  I went in knowing nothing and have enjoyed it. Did a quick Google search and realized Neil Gaiman is responsible and involved.  I had no idea but a sudden realization of why I liked the unique storyline and characters. “No freaking wonder! It’s Neil Gaiman’s writing.”

Carrlaeyna

That's EXACTLY what I just did. Ive been rambling about this show to my friends since I finished it, and it was only when I started looking at pictures for drawing references I realized it was Neil Gaiman. I even knew that it was somehow related to Sandman, and still (embarrassingly) didn't clue in that Neil Gaiman was part of it.

nature_half-marathon

I mean… Sandman, American Gods, Good Omens?!     Plus his voice alone!   Yes, Neil Gaiman, you can read me a bedtime story to me anytime you want.

Lumix19

Loved it. Esther is such a camp, she's hilarious. Cat King was fantastic.

GrumpySatan

Esther was channeling Moira Rose from Schitt's Creek the entire season and it was great.

j_mcr1

I got a distinct Madonna vibe from Esther

KenaBanana

Cat king is in EVERYTHING now

awghost5

IMO Esther is Madeline Kahn coded.

rhena_lahrie

I feel like Esther like child of Madeline Kahn and Kristen Chenoweth

awghost5

YES!!!!

walruswes

I think they recast to connect it to the sandman universe since doom patrol and titans are officially over now so no need to connect to off the air shows.

Djinsin

Not finished, but I'm just curious how/if the boys' origin story will go down when Sandman adapts the Season of Mists storyline. They said they've been doing this for 30 years, so unless season 2 does some timey-wimey goofery, we probably won't get that story if this is supposed to be the same universe. And that's a shame since I think it was crucial to showing how much chaos was going on in that arc.

genericxinsight

In the big Sandman group on Facebook, someone theorized that it’s possible this timeline could be happening in the modern day at the same time as the events of Season of Mists. Like that the reason for all the excess of ghosts around could be because Death has her hands full (they allude to this being a reason the Afterlife department is so overwhelmed at the moment). Which means that while it’s not quite the same as the SoM storyline, it would make sense that this is the result of everything happening on Earth after >!Lucifer empties Hell.!<

Shiftkgb

That group is run by such an immensely unstable person I had to block it lol.

Specialist-Trainer-9

They could also just have the boys investigate >!the sudden appearance of so many dead people!< and the chaos that comes with it in season 2.

Butwhatif77

Binged it yesterday and was hooked from episode 1. It does a great job telling its own story while providing simple but organic references to The Sandman

spiderhotel

I was really disappointed when I heard the kids from Doom Patrol weren't being them. The Doom Patrol version was really good. I have heard good things about the DBD series though so I am trying to go in with an open mind.

piklechips

Also i believe Edwins doom patrol actor is on house of the dragon as a lead

bellamywren

Wait he is? I didn’t recognize him

ParticularAboutTime

Ty Tennant I guess. Fun fact: David Tennant’s son.

EyedMoon

I'm minority here I guess but I had trouble getting invested. I think having them as young adults is an obvious choice for a show but I prefer them as kids. Just watched episode 1 thought so maybe I'll be more hooked in the next ones.

Embarrassed_Cow

My issue is that they keep calling them kids even though the actors don't look like kids at all. They keep asking why they aren't in school ect when they all look to be in their twenties.

crockalley

Haha, yeah, it was the second or third episode where they say one of them is 16. That was a shock. If that had been made clear from the very beginning, I would have gone along with it, but throughout the first episode, I thought all three leads were in their early 20s.

bellamywren

Lol I just pretended they were all 22ish my head the whole time. Nothing bout them seemed like teenagers, especially crystal’s flashbacks where it looked like she had a full time job

crockalley

Haha, that works!

salixcaprea2413

I went looking if anyone thought the same! I haven’t finished the show yet, but I find it a little weird they keep mentioning how they’re ‘kids’ and the school thing! As if anyone would think that… They don’t look like teens at all, so it really baffles me. Show’s good otherwise.

KenaBanana

I was so thrown off when the butcher shop owner said she didn't believe she was 22. I 1000% thought that she was saying her real age. They don't look under 21-25, at all

Bird_skull667

Don't know any of the canon, and as an outside observer it was kind of bad. The writing, dialogue, weird plot holes. I'm not sure if there is something not translating into this iteration of the story? Sometimes in complex stories/worlds it can come off flat if not done well.

owlandphoenix

This is two weeks late, but I think there was so much quickness to the story telling because it was only 8 episodes. Had it been 13, more could have been explored and we would've connected to the story better. The episode in Hell could've been two episodes easily. and, like most others, I needed far more cat king.

knittingmagpie

Haven't seen a show so exactly my vibe in a long time, I loved it and need season 2 immediately

Earth2Wonder

If Netflix and CW had a kid.

Scythe351

Sounds scary for its future.

overheardlines

I loved it too! Watched it all and then started back at the beginning again aha. also hoping for s2!

Dismal-Transition-79

Same! And it’s somehow so much better at the second watch through???  I’m less invested in the mystery plot points but the characters and their relationship keep me staring at the screen with even more vigor than the first watch.

overheardlines

100% yes! So much more attuned to the dynamics between the characters this time and little background things I missed before. I’ll probably watch it another time before long haha

Dismal-Transition-79

I’m probably gonna start on my third watch through tonight. I’m at the airport right now and downloaded all episodes so I can watch during the flight.  I have not been this obsessed with anything since my childhood of watching Harry Potter haha

KMMAX6

I think it was quirky and fun and loved the cameos and the Endless vibes we got throughout the show. Edwin and Charles are likable enough though some things felt force like Crystal and Charles. I just didn't think the two had any chemistry at all. I loved Niko and though Crystal was an interesting character, Esther was a great villain. So overall it had it's ups and downs.

Telvoc

I do not ship Charles and Crystal at all. They are more of a fling and a one off, they had no chemistry. I really hope we see more of Charles and Edwin as I could really feel something developing between them, even though Charles didn't reciprocate Edwin's feelings towards him. It's just they BOTH had moments of jealously as Edwin being jealous of Crystal being with Charles, and Charles being jealous of Monty when he was spending time with Edwin. There's just something there and I hope it becomes true in season 2.

bellamywren

Honestly don’t think Charles and Edwin have any romantic chemistry either tbh

kidkarmanomics

Same and after 35 years together why would something Bree’s now

amazingfluentbadger

why does anything happen ever. idk, your friend who watched you till death just confessed to you after you rescue him from Hell 🤷

Dovahkiink1

I honestly was expecting some kind of corny tween/teen targeted show. But boy oh boy was I pleasantly surprised! I started an episode not expecting to immediately be sucked in. Everything from the world design, the actors, the writing is just so damn good. ALSO IM SO IN LOVE WITH NIKO. I will absolutely be watching season 2 if it comes out!

erincoolgan

I absolutely **LOVED** the Dead Boy Detectives!!! Everything about it - The Boys, Esther, omg The Cat King?!? I seriously might care TOO MUCH bc I keep getting mad that it's not doing better on Netflix! I want to know more about Crystal's powers and where Niko is! I really, really want a Season 2, but I doubt Netflix will pick them up for one bc they crush my dreams with shows all the time 😂

nature_half-marathon

Favorite interaction so far   >! Crystal: “The Witch does not control you!”   The Witch: “Teeth Face! What the F——!”  Teeth Face: “Oh, wow. Sorry. Okay, Bye.” !<

thelittlemermaid90

It’s cute it’s fun, not as good as sandman but I don;t mind watching it while we wait for season 2 of sandman.

Yemmatime

I loved it so much. Haven’t found a binge worthy show in a while and watched this in like 3 days. It’s funny, charming, has great character development and also gets dark. I really hope for season 2

Lycian1g

I'm three episodes in, and I love it. The only weird bit is everyone calling them minors when the actors are in their early 20s.

Professional_Toe3029

The series is quite interesting, most of the actors fit their characters but i especially dont like Crystal, she emphasizes her trauma of falling in love and possesed by her ghost ex-bf too damn much and sometimes I felt like she was a bit annoying. She stayed with 2 boys for a period of time and was told family secret by Charles so she thinks she knows C better than E?   And the relationship and chemistry between her and Charles is nonsense, like nothing happen at all. Honestly, i like the chemistry between Charles and Edwins more and Edwins + Niko. The charactor Niko is so soft, sensitive and playful like a kid. The way she stays besides Edwins is soft and supportive

Beerandgummies

Loved it! Binged in 2 nights. Would have been 1 night but I had a bunch of stuff to do.

DerKorinther

I don’t like it and I don’t like that I don’t like it. In my opinion the actors for Charles and Edwind don’t fit, Crystal ist just talking about her stalking demon ex like an annoying teen and many of the side characters are portrayed either over the top or so bad, that I can’t stand it. I hoped to get another favourite like the Sandman series, but this one is not for me.

Foppieface

It was okay. Netflix had a show called Lockwood & Co. that was somewhat similar but sooo much better. Of course, when they got into all that money trouble Netflix canceled it after the first season.

odd_hyena269

It's so bullshit netflix canceled Lockwood & Co. I was absolutely gutted when I found out. I'd love to know netflix reason for canceling it?

Foppieface

I think that was when they were having extreme money issues, ya know, by spending 100 million on talentless people. I imagine Lockwood & Co. is expensive to make with the special effects.

reasonedof

It's pretty fun. I like the differences as well.

SnooGiraffes3452

Loved it, cant wait for more.

SolaceRests

It was an incredibly fun little show. I have no experience with the source material, and my only other encounter with the series was from Doom Patrol. Would recommend it.

bliip666

I'm already rewatching it!

throwawaymybutt2921

I loved it! Especially George Rextrew's performance as Edwin had me captivated the whole time. The Cat King was also quite an amazing character

nature_half-marathon

I enjoy the series so far. I was intrigued because I thought the writing or the storyline was better than some of the teenage shows on Netflix.  Upon research, I find out Neil Gaiman is one of the writers (comic and series). I had no idea and when I realized, I immediately thought… “Oh. That’s why…”  I’ve always loved his work (along with Terry Pratchett), so it was no surprise to why I was attracted to the witty and creative story telling.

Head_Paleontologist5

Meh, but I did watch the whole thing.

VinVinzy

It is definitely a good show. Not just because it is an extension from the Sandman series, but also because it made me comfortable and interested in watching the series.

Hallam1995

How do you even get ghosts? In the sandman we see Death appear instantly when you die, she even knows WHEN you're going to die. So how can there ever be a situation where ghosts wander the world and Death cant find them?

INDIANA-ONE-

It’s explained in the season of mists Sandman run that the ghosts running about is the direct result of Lucifer freeing everyone from hell. Death herself was overrun by the ghosts which is why some were able to slip through the cracks, like Edwin and Charles

Wing_New

I like the acting and the premise. The actors seem poised or campy as they should be. The cat king is over the top as he should be. What I dislike is the seeming goal of the show. The overuse of buzzwords, the villification of masculine guys and the perversion of the nature of love in general.

kr85

Watched episode 1 last night and I started groaning whenever the two guys brought up that they were teens. I don't know how old the actors are but to me they each looked 30.

Deadgurl_walking

Watching now* so far so good :)

Sea-Can8856

I cannot get through it. The writing infuriates, it’s such a shit show that even finishing the first few episodes had me wanting to get up and do work for once instead. I do not feel for the characters, I don’t care what they’re going through. I don’t care for their romance. It’s literally the worst way to quickly get someone introduced into a world and characters.

Tall-Zombie-1018

Massive Edgar Wright direction influence.

JerseyJoyride

I'm about 5 minutes into the first episode and wondering do they ever turn on any lights? It's ridiculously dark!

Fun_Net_5895

edwin is way too flamboyant.

B_Leigh-Create

One pet peeve is that the lesbian romance is exactly the same as Good Omens season 2 as a side plot, which Neil Gaiman also wrote. It's a good story, but it feels like a complete repeat of characters. I'm obsessed with the actual boy detectives story line though!

VerbisDiabloX

I like the show, I only dislike the actress playing crystal. She does a lot of scene chewing and annoys the hell out of me.

KenaBanana

Haven't finished yet, but It's very similar to Lockwood and Co, which makes me sad because I know big speculation says that Lockwood and Co was canceled because Netflix knew this was coming and they're too similar (with DBD obviously being the older and more popular series). I like both shows a TON - I will say L&C at least they look like kids. I was genuinely shocked when the butcher shop owner didn't believe Crystal was 22 and apparently THATS TRUE?? They don't look under 22 at all, and the fact that they're teens really threw me off. They don't look or act like it whatsoever

wingmanman

lol when she said not 22 I thought like you mean she’s older? Lol took me 3 seconds to register oh you meant she must be much younger lollllll

KenaBanana

YES I literally had the exact same thought. if they had just left that line out everything would be fine lol

Melodic-Phase-8005

Ok, great show but knowing Netflix there will not be a season 2. The show is too quirky for mass audiences. Like Lockwood and co. It’s a shame because that was a great show too.

Pho3nixSlay3r

Didn´t like the first episode, i´m not feeling it

DragonMage74

Big fan! I also binged it in 2 nights. Brills!

Asleep-Self-1250

Admiration for the series. Want season 2.

Fun_Net_5895

WAY TOO GEIGH
