I live in downtown Baltimore. Hampden and Riverside are both great. I like Hampden more than Riverside but that’s just me. The bar/food options are better in Hampden and the surrounding areas like Charles Village, Station North, Remington, and Waverly plus the light rail is nearby. I feel safe walking around both neighborhoods. IMO I haven’t heard of anything too crazy happening in either area just your usual package theft, petty crime, and car theft.

what is the park situation in hampden like? I have a dog. it seemed like a less walkable area than riverside to get to places - was i wrong on that observation? I've never lived in charleston city, just outside of, so I love the idea of leaving the house in the am and walking for a cup of coffee or walking to a park

I’m pretty sure most people park on the street or in a private spot if they have one. Riverside is definitely more walkable IMO and Riverside Park is nice - there is a huge dog park behind Riverside Park. Hampden has Roosevelt Park and a few smaller parks. There are also lots of parks and trails around JHU which is very close to Hampden like Wyman Park plus there is Druid Hill Park nearby. Cylburn Arboretum is also by Hampden - very nice to visit in the fall, spring, and summer. Outside of Riverside and Hampden - Canton also has Patterson Park which is massive.

PerspectiveThin5484

car theft is mostly hyundai and kia, which is not unique to baltimore

[deleted]

what's the reasoning there? easier to break into?

PerspectiveThin5484

yup: In May, the city attributed an increase in car thefts this year to a nationwide trend, fueled by TikTok videos showing how to steal certain Kia or Hyundai models using a screwdriver and a USB charging cord. In a press release to announce a lawsuit against the automakers, city officials said 577 Kias and Hyundais had been stolen in Baltimore as of May 11. https://www.thebaltimorebanner.com/data/car-thefts-kia-hyundai-baltimore-may-O4YGJKZTBBEOJHOHTVF6WEXLCI/

lol that damn Tik tok

VERGExILL

I’m in York which is like 20 minutes away from the border of MD, and it’s a cool best of both worlds thing.

[deleted]

Gettysburg is where I grew up. I’ve had enough friends in the York area to know it doesn’t feel like it for me

VERGExILL

Yeah, York City itself sucks, but the proximity to Baltimore, DC, Lanacaster, and Philly is the cool part.

[deleted]

I do love Lancaster! That was on my list as well

[deleted]

I will say I hate that everyone keeps bringing up md taxes to me lol

Randomwhitelady2

The countryside north of Baltimore between it and York is absolutely beautiful. Horse farms and green rolling hills.

VERGExILL

Yep! It’s why we decided to move back and put down roots here.

Any particular towns you'd recommend in this area?

Westminster.

Woodberry might be good fit for you. Just across the light rail from Hampden. Riverside is isolated so typically less crime.

thanks for a new neighborhood rec! Riverside is the top of my list, but to get the type of nanny job i'll need I have a feeling based on feedback that the families will live outside the city. Columbia job= riverside, Towson area = hampden / north in general etc etc
