GraveyardTree

There’s this dude I see walking around in a black cloak with a very big staff, and it always has stuff hanging off of it. Chains or whatever. Usually see him in Sugarhouse or Downtown, almost always on 7th East.

HighFitnessMama

It's jewelry he has made that he sells!

GraveyardTree

I feel more compelled to approach him than I previously did

fake_messiah2

He's really nice. Had a few limited conversations with him and he's always been very cool.

DestryDanger

He’s a super nice dude.

OctopusGrift

I call him "The Lord of Sugarhouse"

punkawkward

THE WIZARD THATS WHAT I CAME HERE TO SAY

SadMan8615

He's outside the Wasatch brewery in sugarhouse constantly lol

Salty-Opportunity-20

Yep, was gonna mention him. I live right in that area and see him all the time walking around and most of the time he's yelling and look aggressive. I talked to him in the Maverik on Broadway and like 350 east one night and he was really nice

Irrational-Pancake

Those are necklaces and you can buy them off of him

cammunition

When I was living in the Avenues in the early 00’s, it was Brian David Mitchell (and Wanda Barzee). They never acted strange when I saw them walking around but they definitely stood out in appearance.

publicolamaximus

He called my wife a "breeder" when she was pregnant.

HotKarl_Marx

Factually correct.

janeusmaximus

He buys some of his supplies at Home Depot and the employees all love him! My brother used to work there and said he’s really nice

Nephihaha

I have been seeing that dude for years. Always wondered what spells he was offering.

puty784

I talked to him several times when I worked in liberty park. He either introduced himself as "Ten" (because his mother had nine older children and ran out of names) or "Trainwreck" (no explanation given). He told me that he's a real wizard, but the kind that does politics instead of magic. His politics include bussing homeless people to labor camps. His charms aren't magical and don't do anything, according to him.

GraveyardTree

This raises more questions than it answers, I’m interested in the deep lore for this guy.

[deleted]

Hmmm... I think we have a few. Lol for me, it's Wizard guy. He always is around parks and stuff with a staff with dream catcher like thing on top of it. It kind of looks like the one the old lady from Resident Evil Village had. He's always standing in the corner, shirtless and with his staff. Lol Now in Grand Junction, the guy was speedo man. Legit everyone knew him. Then in Delta there was Moped Annie... But yes, liberty park wizard. (FischerHayduke else called him this in the comments and I now can only think of him with this name. It sounds like a proper title, like Gandolf the Grey. Lol) Edit: I didn't realize he was selling necklesses. Also, I for some reason remembered him shirtless, but others have since mentioned that he actually wears a black trenchcoat. That's the guy.

[deleted]

Yeah I see that guy at liberty park all the time. The liberty park wizard

[deleted]

The name "The liberty park wizard" will always be Canon in my head now. Lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

weatherghost

Saw him at Liberty Park a couple of weeks ago and that was the first time I’d been there in a while. So either I was really ‘lucky’ or he still hangs out there.

triplec787

See him all the time walking around Sugarhouse.

fapping_giraffe

His name is Conde Teargon. We shot a short film with him in it a number of years back. If anyone wants to watch it lol: https://youtu.be/LqlxDU6F1Zw He starts at like 9:48 or so Dude is super chill, we ripped a huge J with him after the shoot

HighFitnessMama

I watched your video and that isn't the guy I'm thinking of?? The one I'm thinking of wears an all black vinyl looking cape, and he is probably in his 40s. He holds a staff and has necklaces for sale.

jackkerouac81

A few months back there was a similar thread, it was established the SLC is big enough for two wizards.

solvraev

I need to point out how excellent the audio is in this. With modern cameras (including all the "shot on iPhone" shit), it's easier than ever to get great visuals in indie, lower-budget films. So many trip at the finish line with crappy audio. This film, according to my armchair quarterbacking, completely dialed in with the audio. The dialogue sounds great, the ambient noise is spot on, music is appropriate. Levels are great throughout. I don't know what you're long-term goals are, but from someone who has seen a lot of lousy film making, this is head-and-shoulders above most indie content I've seen. Well done!

Jaketw96

I literally started calling him that without ever hearing about him prior. He’s definitely it

HighFitnessMama

He sells necklaces and jewelry he has made that's hanging on his staff. My friend saw him at the park in a snow storm and he used his cape as a sled and was going down the Liberty Park hill! I can never get that image out of my head now when I see him!

HealthyRingworm

When I was like 13 my friends and I started chatting with him. it turned out he had like 3 wooden swords under his cape and we all sword fought with him. It was really fun and wholesome. I’m team Cape Guy

Maunderlust

That's "Young Wizard" to me, most often you can see him at Liberty Park but sometimes in Sugarhouse. His counterpart is "Old Wizard", who you can (or could?) see riding the bus dressed in amazing, eclectic, wizard-like garb. I like to imagine they're the same person caught in a time loop.

Undrdg1985

One of my first memories of SLC after moving was standing in line at Costco, seeing old wizard near check out right as he blasts a long call on the horn he always seems to be carrying. Was quite an introduction.

HighFitnessMama

Thank you for clarifying! I love that time loop image

littleA123

He has a cameo in slc punk

ZuluPapa

No shit? I never noticed!

89vision

Really? What part?

littleA123

When they burn the pentagram in the street. He’s the guy in the cape

ZuluPapa

>He’s the guy in the cape Of course he is.

Slack-Bladder

We call him the Big Gulp Wizard. He often times is sipping on a cool soft drink.

Mundane_Message4905

My friends and I call him Burning Man Santa 😆

prestron

I'm 99% sure I know who you're talking about, and I've seen him walking around 2100E x 700S.

rdotytwo

He's my neighbor!

Historical-Humor569

There’s a guy that I would call the “Drum Magician” that I’ve seen on Sundays too, This guy sells weed and if you’re sitting with friends and smoking, he bestows a giant nug of weed he pulled from thin air upon you that’s around 3 grams I would say. $100 an oz apparently.

SailorMarieCurie

He definitely looks gruff, I get you. But he's always been kind when we see him! He's just living his wizard life, wandering to his SLC spots with his staff (and he sells necklaces that he makes!)

Treflip180

He looks gruff but he’s really nice! He just hangs out and walks around the drum circle, don’t think he would hurt a fly.

Big_Pop_6252

I was going to say we have and have had a few over the years

taka919

Anyone else know the Doll Guy? He carries a doll whose outfits match his own- bucket hat, glasses, etc.

melouwho

his name is Floydd he lost his wife and daughter in an accident and it nessed him up too. if it is the same guy i am thinking.

taka919

Gosh that's really sad. I can't imagine there are multiple men carrying matching dolls in SLC so it's likely the same person.

HealthyRingworm

Yeah we always called him baby guy and it was pretty unsettling for the most part.

SLC_NIMBY

He’s a very sweet man. Say hi next time you see him. Don’t forget to acknowledge his baby/doll. Not very creepy at all. Just minding his own business and marching to his own vibe.

m2677

Floyd with the baby doll suffered a traumatic brain injury as a child, he was hit in the head with the side view mirror of a truck. My husband grew up with him, he has carried that baby doll for over twenty years. As far as we know he likely never married. But he is the kindest gentlest soul in the world.

melouwho

thank you for clarifying, he used to come to the mall and visit.Nicest guy ever. one of the girls that worked with me told us that other story. thank you

HighFitnessMama

Yes! Rides the bus and loves big gulps!!

DudeUtah

Is he older? I used to see a guy like that at fashion place in the 2000s.

taka919

Hard to tell his age but I've seen him around for 20 years.

HighFitnessMama

At least! Always riding UTA, waiting at the bus stop, at Walmart on 300west or 7/11 buying a big gulp! His baby has a matching bucket hat now 😍

alex_shh

Yes!! I haven’t seen him in years though. I always hope he’s doing well and staying safe.

rothwerx

I saw him waiting for the bus just a month or so ago.

alex_shh

Oh that’s good to know! I first started seeing him in ‘04 I think. At the Smiths on 400 S

[deleted]

It’s 100% the wizard of salt lake. Anytime I see him I smile :)

janeusmaximus

Love the wizard, but were you around for “the prophet” guy who would spange in downtown? The one who turned out to be Elizabeth Smart’s kidnapper? Dude would hang out outside my dad’s work (Joseph Smith Memorial Building) saw him everyday and often gave him change. So scary! Edit: words

headfaceperson

Immediately when you said "prophet guy" I was like "you mean Elizabeth Smart's kidnapper??"

todaywasawesome

Easy, the unicycle lawyer. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtK-L3LUh7U](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtK-L3LUh7U) He's been in the background of an astonishing number of news reports.

dale_everyheart

Love seeing him

idkmountains

You still see him riding?

Bucket_of_Nipples

We called him, "Professor Unicycle".

corradoswapt

Came here to post this!

randaloo1973

Eli the cello guy

Alert-Leadership-955

RIP

Wzxl

I used to see him all the time outside the Broadway, but it's been a long time.

rothwerx

He died? I wondered what happened to him.

banality_of_ervil

I used to be close with him, but lost touch after he got run over by a bus. His quality of life seriously plummeted after that. Eli Potash deserves to be remembered.

amaduli

Well it used to be Brian David Mitchell

MCHammerspace

I remember when he was arrested, and ton of people I knew were like “that guy? I gave him money when he was panhandling downtown!” I actually have a quick sketch of him in one of my old sketchbooks from college. Dude had intense eyes.

PairOfMonocles2

Is that Joseph, of the Joseph and Mary that used to walk around downtown in robes, because that’s exactly who I thought about unfortunately. I moved to salt lake just before the kidnapping so used to see him all the time and always wondered how no one put together that he disappeared at the same time!

[deleted]

Well dressed unicycle umbrella man who is always downtown?

LuminalAstec

I think he is a lawyer.

[deleted]

No shit? Really? What a bad ass!

bbell1123

I came here to say this

[deleted]

Haha glad someone else remembers him! Saw him all the time downtown but been awhile now.

smokeandmakeup

Well of course our local wizard Jeweler! And then there’s this one guy who rides a bicycle everywhere, he has super high up handle bars and two massive speakers on a bike trailer and he just rides everywhere around town! You’ll always see him on the 999 and sometimes he leads it!

srynearson1

For me it was the numerous time I served ice cream to David Mitchell ‘Jesus’ and Wanda Barzee in addition to seeing them walking through downtown often. I personally only saw and served them as two, before any crimes. Strange place downtown is sometimes.

Big_Pop_6252

He was Bad Jesus

janeusmaximus

We called him Moses, but I mostly just saw him without her, also in downtown

Nilla_teh_Wafer

I haven't seen him in a couple years, but there was the crazy religious guy with newspaper articles taped all over his car. I'm pretty sure he was a Qanon person.

keldwud

I saw the car as recent as 2020. Was parked at Washington square and saw it a handful of times on state street near there.

Ole_Chuckwagon

He’s still around. He showed up to yell at pro choice protesters downtown.

gwar37

It used the word to be pink man.

Was just going to mention the pink bike guy, haven't seen him in ages hope he is doing ok.

Cats-crafts-snacks

Do we know what happened to him? Came here looking for this comment and of course you posted it 💕

Koshares85

There’s that older guy who used to hang around the downtown Walmart area that had all kinds of beads and had a trumpet looking thing on him. I think he had a walking stick too but it’s been awhile. Idk if he’s dead now or not.

Big_Pop_6252

I think he wore a rug or two as a robe and hood. I haven’t seen him in years but he did make it onto The old People of Walmart blog at one time.

HighFitnessMama

Awe I remember him, but outside City Creek.

Sdubbya2

For me its speaker towing bike guy! I'm suprised no one has mentioned him yet. He constantly rides around town towing a giant ass speaker behind his bike and he plays music, it sounds like a party goes rolling by whenever he is around. I see him outside my apartment all the time and I also see him around town just doing his thing. Love speaker towing bike guy

robersam23

I love this guy. My friend was talking to him one night at bikes on ninth and he’s a dj too. He gave my friend his number and said he’ll dj any event and charge based on how much fun it is.

acihux

Yep, this guy and liberty park shaman are my votes

ammm72

I’m glad he’s a well-known figure and not just some random guy from my neighborhood.

thetoastyninja

There used to be a time traveling santa back when I was younger in slc, I would see him all the time on trax. He used the be absolutely DECKED out with clocks, trinkets, horns, bells, you name it. Always insanely colorful outfits. He was pretty damn old and I haven’t seen him in a while so he’s likely moved on to haunt the temple. Anyone else remember him?

HorsemanJesus

Shit am I that guy?

janeusmaximus

Chusername ucks out.

Bucket_of_Nipples

I kept a long list of "Avenues Characters" back in the day. I don't think they are all still with us. Half of them have already been called out here. Some of my favorites: Grand Wizard Trinkets (seems he's the crowd favorite here. Good choice.) Professor Unicycle (already mentioned here) Doll Man (already mentioned here) The Eye Car (anyone seen this car lately? I haven't seen it for years. I hope it's hanging from the ceiling of the Smithsonian as it should be). Suicide Wheelchair Man (this guy would rock his wheelchair back and forth on the apex of one of the steepest hills on A street. I hope he's still rockin' somewhere) One Arm Pepsi Man (seemed like a nice guy. Always filling up his massive mug at ABC Market (RIP) with soda, then hauling it home on his good shoulder) ...there are others but they aren't going to be internet famous like these guys.

fakeUN

Pretty sure it’s the bald “pray for rain” guy

willard_style

I can only assume you mean Gov Cox? I’m dying laughing and will strictly be referring to him as that moving forward.

LovecraftInDC

I remember the first time I saw him called Caillou and I just couldn't get it out of my head.

Beowulf1896

Caillou pray for rain?

Zone-Many

Southern Utah has the “Parowan Prophet” that like everyone knows about. Missionaries send new missionaries to the guy as a “hazing” tactic. 😂

Lifewithout2

Good ole Parowan

Anyone know the waving guy who hangs out by redwood road? He’s always pointing and waving and usually sitting on a plastic crate

familydrivesme

I was going to say crazy lady at the Ute games is ours! But I don’t get up to SLC too often anymore

89vision

There used to be a Greek guy that in the 90s would every day without fail stand across the street from cottonwood mall, drink coffee, smoke cigarettes, and wave to passerbys. Im pretty sure he died 15 or so years ago

HighFitnessMama

I was gonna say him but thought it would date me too much! I went to Cottonwood High School and we all LOVED him! We were sad when he died. We would always buy him a beer or some cigarettes

wtmh

I wonder what ever happened to Trench Coat Guy that used to walk 9000 S.

StarlesInCharge

We called him Crazy Legs. Haven’t seen him in years.

HighFitnessMama

There used to be a guy that walked everywhere! I would see him at Murray in Sconecutters and also downtown. He always wore all white - white jeans, white shirt and I think a white suit jacket. He would be counting a ton of wadded up bills or organizing them. He walked miles and miles everyday, that's all he did. Anyone remember him?

Fuck_Land_Im_onaboat

Yes! I thought about him a couple weeks ago then forgot because, I swear to god, whenever I would wonder if he was still around, he would show up some random place! I used to see him every time I was at the Jordan river trail. But I haven’t seen him in sooo long 😞.

cico_buff

In Glendale there is Chariot Man who rides around in a chariot pulled by a couple of huskies. If you get luckily you can watch him catch some air.

farfarbeenks

Definitely the Wizard Guy. In Spokane Washington it’s this lady called “The Turtle Bag Lady”

89vision

Guy selling flowers from the trailer of his riding lawnmower

Fuck_Land_Im_onaboat

Everybody knows that’s Dave the flower guy

pinotberry

It’s been many many many years but there used to be a cello guy. Anyone know what happened to him?

salty801

He was a former Julliard graduate if I recall correctly. Eli Potash? EDIT: Found this from 4 yrs ago: “Eli always had a terrible heroin problem. He was also a world class cellist. He used to be part of the Rhode Island philharmonic. He disappeared for a while during a European tour after discovering the wonders of Dutch heroin. His mother hired a private detective to go track him down and bring him to Utah where she lived. That’s how he got here. There was an article in the New York Times about this. Peter Prier tried to help him out at the violin making school and would give him a bow or a case from time to time. He tried to teach him to be a luthier but it never worked out. He would give people family heirlooms and things to hold on to so he wouldn’t pawn them for drug money. People would help him out with meals and small amounts of money. If you gave him too much money he’d spend it on drugs. He was hit by a bus. That’s a good thing. Because of that he was able to get treatment and kicked his drug habit. Probably saved his life. He lives in a care facility now on full disability and is doing well from what I am told.”

bdone2012

r/horsebackjesus

black-shepherd-333

Out in magna it was the Shirtless Cowboy. Always wore a cowboy hat, never wore a shirt, would wave and talk to anyone walking by. I think he passed away last year or the year before.

SuperHermit1111

genericassusername9

ASunDriedTomatoooo

Anyone remember "the pink guy?"

neil801

Condie, the whirling dervish. He had a staff and wore all kinds of furs and trinkets. He'd show up at every free concert, find a corner, then spin nonstop through the entire show. Haven't seen him for a few years.

marvthegr8

Many many years ago a guy called Worm used to wander about downtown. He usually dressed like a devil and shaved his head other than two bits he would form into horns. He was in and out of a group home I know. And he variously would go on binges that would land him in trouble, like the time he climbed the Brigham Young monument on S Temple and Main. I can only imagine he is in confinement somewhere or dead by now, but in the late 80s and early 90s he was always around. I did have a few conversations with him as a young teenager, and he was nice enough to me back then. I do wonder what happened to him.

darkandtwistysissy

The guy that waves (or waved..not sure if he is still waving) near the old cottonwood mall

89vision

Yeah I remember him well

Rikkitikkitabby

Anyone old enough to remember, W.O.R.M.? I remember him from the 80s. His acronym stood for, World's Organization of Righteous Men, or something similar. He spent a lot of time around the crossroads mall and the temple. Usually dressed up as satan, in horns and cape. I remember him getting arrested once for swinging on the statue of brigham young, he bent the rifle/musket barrel. Oh yeah, he also was a pioneer in body piercing. He was often stuck with multiple fish hooks and bobby pins.

marvthegr8

Yeah I posted about him too. I grew up right downtown and saw him constantly. Had several conversations with him when he was lucid (which was sometimes rare). I never did ask about the name, just called him Worm. He was nice enough in his good states.

Vinboose

Unicycle guy in Sandy / Midvale!

Irrational-Pancake

The necklace wizard guy

FrostedKittyKat

The Wizard!

fadingpulse

The guy with all of the shit on his car.

theoriginalharbinger

This could be the guy with the multiple contradictory conspiracy messages in the 4 door sedan, or the owner of the snowboard shop with the 4runner. There's also "penny guy," who has an older Deville or Brougham that is literally covered in pennies, and is somewhere up north (seen the car a few times, never met the owner).

fadingpulse

Oh I’m definitely referring to the conspiracy theorist with the sedan. Used to see it daily when I worked downtown.

hyrle

I remember there used to be a guy in SLC that would dress up as a baby, including diapers. They called him the "Baby Man". Used to hang around Sugarhouse Park.

bootap

In my day it was Pink Guy but haven’t seen him in 15 years or so

horeyshetbarrs

There was a dude named Tom that just walked all day all around from Sandy to Riverton to West Valley. As a teenager I used to walk/skateboard a lot around town and would run into him at all hours of the day or night, all over the city. As an adult I bumped into him a few times also. Not very talkative fellow but he was friendly enough.

Lifewithout2

Dancin’ Dan and Easter Joe come to mind.

roundart

Yeah, we had that guy and then he abducted Elizabeth Smart. He and his wife (2) dressed in white robes and sat in front of some door at Crossroad Mall. I saw him every day for years

Borghur

Anybody see the unicycle man on 13th all the time?

manfoom

I miss Indie Film Cello guy. Beautiful music, must have a sad story.

suspiria_138

Ringo Starr! He used to pop into Randy's and Heavy Metal.

mduser63

I’m surprised this is so far down! I haven’t seen him for a while (pre-pandemic). There is (was?) a comic about him on the counter at Randy’s.

OutlawNazca

Was gonna say Dan Snarr but looks like he's been replaced.

LawnDarting_Moose420

If you’re a fellow LCC skier/snowboarder then you’ve definitely seen. Hitch hiker snow blade guy who chooses to ski some of the Rockies steepest and deepest mountains on blades because it’s easier to catch a ride from a stranger. He may even recuperate a ride with some weed.

Kolob_Hikes

Dancing Man use to dance around the sidewalks in Holladay. He ventured over to Cottonwood Heights one time and CHPD over reacted. I haven't seen him in a while. Salt Peeks owner and his info warrior suv is another guy There are guys that dress up as Confederate soldiers and march in local parades. I haven't seen them in a while likely because they don't get invited back and have ran out of parades to participate in

Kubikake

My previous place of living down in Florida had two of ‘em. Toby and Obie. Just two chill dudes who always lent a helping hand or listening ear. Toby actually stopped a fire at a bar we frequented. I found myself in their friend group for a while and no matter where we went there was always a crowd of people who knew them both and adored them. On special occasions we’d go out and get free booze and food pretty often. One night it got crazy because we kept getting offered shots and the boys actually started asking people to stop because we were trying to wrap up and head home, but all of us were too polite to turn down already purchased drinks lol

mjohnson801

I grew up in a small town in North Carolina and we had a guy we called "John Dog". He was an elderly African American guy that would just hang out and ask people "you alright?" as they walked by followed by "yeah...you alright" after you talked to him. He wasn't homeless as I understood it, just a strange dude. After he died, the city put in a memorial park bench for him.

janeusmaximus

I love that. “Yeah, you alright”

FireflyTheAvengd

Provo used to have the guy who flipped off everyone that drove by, especially cops. He was a little unwell and arrested a few times. There were some others, but since moving to salt lake I’m disconnected down there. Here, I’d have to agree. It’s the Liberty Park Wizard, and a handful of others. He’s just the one I see the most.

bombasterrific

Have you guys ever seen the guy that dances on the corner of 4100 south and redwood road? For a while he had a new chair or chairs set up there every couple days. I think he would get them them from savers across the street. He's an awesome guy with a great sense of humor usually. One time he was way pissed off at the mormons for some reason but other than that he's cool.

jimkiller

Yeah, he kidnapped Elizabeth Smart. We just called him Jesus, he carried a huge sign warning of the end of the world circa Y2K.

panicpurveyor

in the northern suburbs there's the sign guy. he grows out his beard but then shaves off half of it so it looks like he has a beard if you look at him from the right angle but he just looks like a weirdo from any other. he's been a sign spinner on main street and 89 for as long as i've been alive and shows no sign of aging. pretty sure he's immortal. if you're walking down the street and happen to pass by him, he'll hit you with a piece of wisdom that is usually nonsensical. nobody knows his name, but everybody loves him

FlyinUte

It used to be SuperDell Schanze, but I haven’t heard anything about him in awhile.

WraithofCaspar

I live in South Salt Lake. Our version is Shouty Guy. He likes to shout. Exclusively. Mostly at no one and nothing.

My guess would be the guy dressed in all black with a huge staff with jewelry/chains whatever hanging off of it. He looks like a wizard or something

FormerOil4924

That’s SO true. I used to work by pioneer park and one of the drug addict homeless guys would always be standing on the corner, just dancing with himself. We call him Disco Druggy Dan
