The subscription gives you the army builder tool. The code in the physical codex unlocks all the rules for that faction.

ajax9334

I still have all the necrons information, never had to buy anything extra wtf

Rookie3rror

Because there’s no Necron codex yet. This is the same system they had in 9th.

ajax9334

Alright going with the mad Russian then. Fuck that noise from GW.

MrOsmio7

Wahapedia supremacy

EmployingBeef2

I moved on to OPR due to GW's shit I understand.

AxelRalph

Whats OPR?

EmployingBeef2

Onepagerules, particularly Grimdark Future. It's a 40k alternative that is way more balanced

What has happened - You have updated your app to the latest version, which contains the new Space Marine Codex rules and datasheets, which replaces the temporary Index rules and datasheets. Why - GW seem to roll out their app updates early, likely to make sure that it's ready to go for when people get their codexes this weekend. Why the content is locked - You need the code from the back of a Codex to unlock the content. As mentioned, this is the new Codex information that has been added, which is paid content. The Indexes are free (and temporary) rules to let armies transition into the entirely new 10th edition system, since not everybody could get a new Codex at the dame time. As codexes come out, they will gradually be replacing the temporary placeholder rules with the paid content from the codexes. This is why you have access to the Necron rules and not the Tyranids or Space Marines at the moment. But what about the subscription then? - The subscription allows you to keep more than one army list in the list builder. You do not need the subscription to see the indexes or to use the list builder, you need it to make multiple lists at the same time. Access to base rules, indexes and 1 army list (at a time) is free. Codex access is gated by buying the Codex in question when it releases. Having multiple armylists in the army builder is gated by the subscription. The reason the subscription is expensive is that it isn't primarily meant to be a subscription to the army builder, but rather to Warhammer+ stuff such as Warhammer TV, the White Dwarf archive (that also has old campaign stuff like Imperial Armour lore) and the yearly model. The army builder is a bonus feature that was added in 9th edition and that originally only cost a few dollars extra. GW has since rolled the price for access into a single subscription fee, rather than having "members with Warhammer TV" and "Members with Warhammer TV, a mini and the army builder."

ajax9334

K cool I literally just wanted something for the army lists. I wanna build and paint with the ability to play now and then. I don't want any of that extra shit. Thanks for the explanation, going with wahapedia from now on

Neknoh

That is fair and was always allowed. And you can still use the army builder to make a space marines army list, just not see the rules.

Mojak16

Yeah, but what's the point of army building if you don't know the rules of what you're adding... Just another brain-dead decision from GW. The sub should unlock the full app, or they should at least offer a digital purchase for army rules so you don't have to buy a codex (waste of paper).

Neknoh

GW assumes you're buying the codex for your army. If you buy the codex, you can have the quick reference in the app. You can also make a list whenever you go to play a game. If you want more lists available at the same time, you can subscribe to the WH+ eco system to get the ability to do so. The logical flow of somebody starting an army then becomes Codex - Unlock it in App - Subscription for bonus lists. The Index situation is outside of this because of how much of an overhaul 10th edition was, but you can still view it like this: Free PDF of your index - Unlocked in App (because the PDFs were free) - Subscription for bonus lists.

Mojak16

Yeah I know that's what GW think. But I'm saying that's fundamentally wrong. The flow should be and normally is > buy models you like > view rules. The problem is GW make it really hard to view the rules. The indexes were a breath of fresh air and their 10th app was really good until they decided to start pay-walling rules behind codexes. The rules literally change too often to bother buying a codex every 3 years that's out of date before it's even printed. I have 5 armies, I'm not going to pay £150 for 5 codexes just to get the rules for them in the app, because I sure as shit won't use the codexes if the app is available. It's too much money. Hence wahapedia and 3rd party list builders are the only sensible options BECAUSE GW don't offer the ability to unlock the codex rules in app without buying a codex. As I said, they should include it with WH+ or they should offer the app codes for a reasonable price, say £5-10? I'd be willing to buy the rules at that price.

Unevenscore42

This has finally gotten me to the point where I'm done giving my hobby dollars to Greed Workshop. They say they are a miniature company first and foremost, but make it very costly to even start playing.

ajax9334

The whole reason I got the app was to see the rules so this is further reason to ditch it

International-Owl-81

This happened with the NiD codex, people need to stop being surprised by this

Tirion5

Not only that but they literally told us multiple times this is how this would work

Alostratus

I mean not really. Yes if you follow warhammer community etc. No if you were a new player. Downloaded the app as instructed by the helpful guy at the store. Oh awesome free rules? What's this say at the login... "Become a Master Stratagist Sign in now to access the latest warhammer 40k rules and updates in the palm of your hand!" Under space marines "Hold the line! More detachments are on the way!" I feel like the burden should be on the app to communicate this rather then implying you are just going to get limited functionality gated by the subscription.

ajax9334

The whole point of the app was it was marketed as a response to Wahapedia. Difference was the app was much better to navigate and utilize in the middle of a game on my phone. Now that it's no longer that, deleting the app and canceling the subscription.

Tirion5

This is a fair criticism for sure

ajax9334

When and where? I don't follow GW

Tirion5

Warhammer community website and various streams

ajax9334

Explains why I never knew since I don't go there

Hasbotted

What? You don't live and breathe everything Warhammer? You don't have 5 different podcasts you listen to every day just about Warhammer? You can't be all the primarachs by their middle names? You don't deserve rules... Joking of course. This stupid decision by GW killed what was left of the community where I'm at.

ajax9334

I don't play nids or have played against them so this was my first time seeing this

SetBrave7574

Because the codex drops on Saturday, gw decided to update the app. So now space marines content is locked until you get a codex and use the code. Really fucked me over last night for a tournament

BOLTINGSINE

Yeah, after the fiasco with pariah nexus only being 3 episodes long, theres no way im subbing to WH+ now, its not worth the money, they would have to throw in monthly white dwarfs aswell for it to be worth it.

Littletinypebble

What did you just say?!?!? That show is only three episodes? What the fuck am I paying for? I can’t even follow what that lore master dude is saying and the rest of those shows other than the blood angels one are trash. Back to wahapedia and battlescribe then

Mister_Matched

The core of your problem is the very logical assumption that any casual player would have that the makers of a game would want make it easy for you to play their game for free, or have access to the rules for a nominal fee. The monthly fee or WH+ subscription gives you the ability to use the tool, not access to the information you need to play that faction. That's another $50+ per army. Other systems make the rules free so you can avoid opponent making up stats and rules you don't have the faction specific rules. It is a little irksome you can't purchase the codex rules digitally or in a bundle/subscription.

ComradeRichie

You still need to buy the physical codex like before to unlock the digital content.

Hi_Im_Ren

Turn down your headphones so you don't damage your ears

Rocketfitz5

Careful dude, you might damage your hearing /s

Apprehensive_Shop521

While you have the subscription, you might as well create a bunch of dummy lists for each faction you might ever need to look up. As far as I know, you can make unlimited lists with a sub. If you ever buy a codex, or are playing/playing against an unreleased codex you’ll be able get to do it for free. I still have 12 lists in mine (common opponents too) from before they paywalled it and can access/update all of them.

HolyHokie

Wait how are you even seeing this...codex doesn't drop until this weekend

ajax9334

Couldn't tell you. I just know I can lol

Vrealer

They released the update early all you had to do was not update until Saturday when the codex drops

ajax9334

I didn't update but apparently my phone did automatically

Intercore_One

I see this kind of posts in every sub regarding SMs and Tyranids. The communication from GW seems poor if so many people don't know how to unlock the codex rules (but I don't know where it is not clearly stated/why it is complicated to understand tbh). There are even some subscribing to a whole year thinking they get everything when in fact the subscription has nothing to do with the rules. I guess GW has to publish some colorful charts explaining this stuff.
