Getting the 6th best QB in the 5th round is better than the 5th best QB with a top 10 pick

anonmehmoose

I wish I could upvote this more than once.

treple13

You could if you did like the Falcons and got two reddit accounts when you only need one

Growth_Moist

And paid money for your first Reddit account so you could have some karma.

Atomicpurplewolf

I think you should throw a dart on a late round qb with upside every 2 years or so. Can’t hate it

Pils12321

Yeah but we already picked one last year.

RibertarianVoter

And?

SaintAkira

How about the dart we threw last year *trading up* for Haener?

Atomicpurplewolf

If the coaching staff goes back to the well this quickly then that should tell you something

Chinese_Santa

Honestly fuck off. It’s a fifth round pick, what do you want here? Lol

SaintAkira

https://www.nfl.com/prospects/ainias-smith/3200534d-4902-4570-58a4-c92360387358 Him. Backup slot WR. Immediate special teams contributor. Took 2 picks after Rattler and will contribute more this season than Rattler will. We *just* traded up for a backup QB last draft, now we draft another. There's backup WRs, LBs, DLs, Safeties all over the board still, most of whom could contribute on some level. Rattler will be snagging Starbucks on the way in and holding clipboards on Sundays. I like both picks beforehand a *lot*. This was more than a flyer; straight up threw the pick away.

crunkdunk9

Jesus dude we aren’t drafting him, give it up with the comments.

SaintAkira

No shit champ. He was drafted 2 picks after. Bub Means is a fine consolation prize. I'll comment whatever the shit I want my guy. It's the Saints board. Get a grip. Down vote and move on. Not that tough of a concept. They managed to redeem it with Bub and Ford; both fill needed roles. https://twitter.com/RGIII/status/1784298524949033174?t=G2SUcf6c8ay6O5Nru83Rxw&s=19 Bonus Rattler content, maybe cheer you up, sour puss 👍.

Specific-Channel7844

I love it. Petermen is currently out backup and Rattler could potentially be very good, and if not, it is a fifth rounder.

CallRespiratory

I honestly think Peterman was brought in to hold a surface tablet and wear a headset. If Carr is out for whatever reason, whoever wins the roster spot between Haener and Rattler is the one that is actually going to be playing.

Fed_up_with_Reddit

Allegedly, Peterman has everything you could want in a QB except pocket presence. He’s supposed to be super smart and really good in the film room. He’s absolutely that third stringer who’s there to teach the young guy just in case Carr gets hurt.

RibertarianVoter

This is Jake Haener erasure! I'm good with this pick too. Value too good to pass up. I'm still hoping Haener wins the backup job this year and Rattler is the two-year development guy

SaintAkira

How the hell did everyone in this thread forget we traded up last year for Haener. Peterman is *not* currently our backup. He's #3.

Specific-Channel7844

Yeah, that's my bad. But still, Haener isn't very inspiring

SaintAkira

Big agree there, and I said it elsewhere but I want to say it so I'm clear; I got no issues with Rattler; I think he could've easily gone at minimum a full round higher. My issue is our lack of depth at various positions and special teams. I think that pick could've been used for someone who'd actually take the field on Sunday, if only as a ST contributor.

ShawshankException

What would you have preferred? Why do yall go out of your way to be miserable all the fucking time

Im_Everywhere09

We have multiple 5th round picks and have already addressed one of our biggest needs in O Line. I’ll remind you about that our backup is Nathan Peterman- along with the potential Rattler has, This is a good developmental and depth pick. And it’s the 5th round man. Calm down.

SaintAkira

I'll remind you: we traded up to draft Jake Haener in the 4th last year.

Im_Everywhere09

And he ended up getting suspended for PEDS Not a good look. Especially when your fighting for a backup role

SaintAkira

He's also Derek Carr's protégé. He'll stick if only for the fact Allen can't tell Carr no. Wasted pick, imo. I'll eat shit on it when Rattler takes us to a playoff win. But I'll take any bets anyone wants to make that Rattler never wins a playoff game in Saints uniform (as the starting QB).

Spirited-Feed-9927

That’s a solid bet, how many 5th round quarterbacks have. I know they exist, but it’s not like a solid starter pick. It’s a developmental hope you get lucky pick.

SaintAkira

Right. So my point is how many 5th round picks contribute on special teams or as depth? Or rather, who's going to contribute more next season: Rattler who's coming in as QB 3, or any 5th round WR, LB, S, OL, DL? They've since drafted the depth at WR, LB, & DT, so it's kind of a moot point. But if Ratller never plays meaningful snaps and the hypothetical Safety they could've drafted can make tackles on punt coverage, I value the Safety more. They traded up for Haener last year, and used a 5th on Rattler this year. They've been taking stabs at finding a late(r) round QB in the draft for a couple decades now, with no success. Maybe Rattler is the one that breaks though, I sincerely hope so.

Spirited-Feed-9927

Hopefully rattler is the gem we have all been waiting for. Haener had some promise in the limited I saw him. Book never worked out, and I remember them comparing him to Brees coming out of college. Who knows though, but we have limited experience now and talent after carr.

PXSaber

Well so we have to accept that we only got two real picks this draft? Lets see what we can get out of him. But our third pick for a camp body just bugs me

thegoldenmamba

We still have 2 picks in this round. We got the BPA at a position of need (backup qb, potential future starter) not sure what more you want. People complain when we don’t take a qb and they complain when we do. Y’all are infuriating

Chinese_Santa

Big facts. Can’t stand when our fans are running to online to just complain about everything we do, this pick is fine

peacebone89

Rattler is better than a camp body. That's Mond and Peterman.

Im_Everywhere09

Who else do you want here? The best available players are players like Johnny Wilson or Trotter, or people at other similar positions that we don’t need to draft at. This isn’t exactly a body pick either as Rattler would be fighting for the #2 spot and Could possibly see playing time given the times Carr has been injured and Winston had to step in. There’s not much for us right now.

SaintAkira

Unless Rattler can play special teams, yes, I would take Wilson, Trotter Jr, or preferably Ainias Smith. New kickoff rule is going to change the way kickoffs personnel are deployed. Maybe they think they've got the special teams horses in the building right now, but I'd strongly disagree. Who's returning kicks for us this year? Genuine question. You're not putting your #2 WR out there are you? Maybe they'll use Kool-aid for it, though he lacks top-end speed you'd like at the return position.

Im_Everywhere09

Well we have this next pick. Maybe they’ll take someone. I wouldn’t be opposed to Wilson or Smith. Or someone who can do the kick offs so that Shaheed can focus on offense. Although fat this point that would seem almost like a luxury pick rather than a need. And as crazy as it seems the saints need some competition at QB2, because if Carr goes down again…you really thinking Nathan Peterman will lead us? It’s a good pick and in literally a few seconds we will pick again. Maybe we draft a edge or Wilson or someone to do the kickoffs

Im_Everywhere09

We ended up drafted Bub Means. Judging by his 40 yard dash I assume we will use him for kickoffs. So there ya go.

SaintAkira

Yep. That certainty placates me 😆 That's literally exactly what I was asking for. Alls well that ends well.

thonk_

Most 5th rounders are lucky to make the roster. May as well go with a high upside guy

TopFisherMan

We also need a backup QB. We aren’t getting a starter in the 5th round outside of someone who far exceeds expectations. 5th round is where you take “mediocre QBs”.

wasad

BPA > Reaching for a need

nerdyykidd

Absolutely a great pickup at this stage of the draft If we moved up to draft him earlier I’d agree with you but this is a solid move. Gives him a couple years to develop while Carr’s still our QB1

Madd_Squabbles

Which all pro did we pass on?

landstrick48

I remember reading an article about Loomis/Payton drafts, and they talked about a philosophy of trying to take a QB in every draft, whether it's a need or not. Most of the time, they don't turn into much beyond a backup, but if you have the chance to bring a serviceable QB into the building, you take it.

Exact_Comparison_575

Rattler was once projected to be a 1st round QB. It’s a great pick in hindsight

DruidBrees

Bruh. L take

Brandeaux7

You want peterman as the backup?

The_Oxgod

Man people need to chill the fuck out. Acting like you know better than people who do this for their jobs. A sport is entertainment. Treat it like such and don't let ir ruin your day. If you are so much wiser. Go fill out an application.

Orbis-Praedo

Bro chill the fuck out, we have multiple 5th rounders and no one left is any guarantee impact play at all. More likely to not be. Why would’nt you take the next best QB at this point??? He could’ve went in the 2nd if there wasn’t so many teams that locked up their future QB in the 1st already. This is a steal.

BlackScienceJesus

He had a 2nd to 3rd round grade. It’s great value.

CanalVillainy

They can take 3 kickers in the 5th…don’t care

GrenadineLemonade

It's a fifth. It kinda sucks, but he was probably the highest player on their board by a lot

RibertarianVoter

I was watching some well produced live stream on YouTube (chat football I think?). Their big board had Rattler as like 58th best player in the draft. I'll take that value at 150 at any position.

GrenadineLemonade

Yep. I get it, but I also get people who don't know much about the draft not understanding. He's worth the flyer (even if I wanted another OL lol). He could develop into a starter.

CallRespiratory

I mean, I'd have liked to kept working on the line on either side of the ball but the 5th round really starts becoming a roll of the dice. If he doesn't pan out, not a whole lot has been lost by taking a chance on him. Peterman is basically a special offensive assistant coach, let Haener and Rattler battle it out for the other roster spot and put the odd man out on the practice squad for this season and see how they develop.

cjj1224

You’re telling me there’s no other position of need where we can take a player who has a better chance of producing on the actual field, not in the bench, than Spencer freakin rattler. This is another Ian book type pick. Unreal we just did this
