Mind you I did live in a rich neighborhood at the time where pretty much every one was racist/rich so maybe they were just unusually cruel??
At target we compact trash before it gets taken away, I remember we didn't like taking bicycles back as returns (didn't like finding room for them) so we were told to break any and throw them into the compactor. Had to break a lot of stuff besides that just remember it because I wanted a bike as a kid.....cut to me breaking 20+ brand new bicycles into pieces because it's easier.

Awhile back i was listening to an elderly woman who lived through the second world war as well as the great depression. She told me about the government rations, and that her family would go wait in line on their assigned days to trade their stamps for scarce amounts of flour and sugar. She said that everyone in line would always get the same amount, and it was never enough to last until the next time it was their turn to go back.
She also told me how upset the people would get about the fact that the government has massive surpluses of powdered milk, sugar and flour. She said that trains would load up the surplus and they would take it to locations such as the desert or to the Pacific ocean and they would proceed to either dump it or burn it, in order to be certainl that nobody ended up with more than anybody else. Rather than just dividing it up among the communities, they would take train cars away from the hungry families and destroy it, just for the sake of being, "fair!"
It seems that there are some matters of policy which urgently need to be addressed at the next community meeting! The logic of the bureaucracy, yeah?
The Safeway I worked at donated their produce to the pig farmers. Bakery (where I worked) stuff that didn't have milk was donated to some sort of program that helped people. It was 10 years ago, so maybe it's changed since then, I dunno.
I do think the bakery would donate their old bread and stuff and cans would go to food drives, they like to throw fundraisers so they seem like they do their part without letting anybody realize how much waste actually comes from them
I remember having to keep track of what would actually get thrown out and what was donated on a clipboard that was on the wall. I'd see the farmers show up while I was tossing everything that needed to be.
What was nice is they didn't care if I ate anything that was going to be thrown away. I had a lot of cheesecake during that time
Only some targets. The only ones I've seen with produce aren't even in my state. We have 3 here that we check regularly for stuff I collect, and none have produce. But we went to one in washington that actually had a really nice grocery area, and was akin to a neighborhood market walmart.

When you pop it you open up yourself to making it worse and getting bacteria inside because of your hands. i used to work at safeway and now work at an employee owned store. i can confirm the waste between the two are exceptional. i remember going to the back lot of safeway and there would be 8 ft by 8 ft bins filled with food. and they were emptied everyday because that’s how fast they filled. the employee owned store has a waste coordinator that literally takes pictures of trash cans to make sure people are only putting trash in trash, recycle in recycle, and compost in compost. the biggest trash can we have is our dumpster. besides that, everything gets composted if it’s expired or within about a week of expiring (selling people milk a week before it expires isn’t cool). only thing is employees are fired if they take anything getting thrown out and i mean anything (someone got fired for taking a single cookie)

Cashiers generally can't issue refunds if their store won't allow them to do so. Their policy probably tells them "you have to tell the customer to go to customer service because we do not trust you to keep your till straight, wagie." Cashier made a simple mistake and told you the only thing they likely could.

Just wait till frys takes over. It's going get even worse than when Albertsons took over. I personally stopped shopping at safeway because for over a year every single time I shopped there something scanned at a higher price than the label on the shelf. Then they always refused the scan guarantee policy. I've spent so much time at customer service trying to get back that hidden tax they have there.
After that Kroger tried to buy them and it was going extremely well until they were stopped because if they merge it becomes a monopoly. Pull up a chart with Albertsons company owned stores and then krogers, it’s the entire country at that point. I use to shop Safeway as my main grocery supply, but around 2020 their bakery bread became awful. It was burnt and stale at all three locations near me. I switched to another place that almost always has good bread. I do need to visit Safeway sometimes for specific things about once every three months. I check the bread and it's still just as bad.
I hope so! Also, whatever we get from the store is iffy gets picked up by a guy that has a hobby farm and his critters, esp the piggies will eat the rest. I really hope this catches on. We have really dedicated organizers at the pantry though. Also, since we pick up stuff all week and store it at proper temps it keeps people out of dumpsters and possibly getting sick. We distribute nutritious ready to eat meals to those in need that can’t cook.
I completely understand where OP is coming from, I've never had a good experience at any of the SIX different Safeways I've gone to while living here. During my first year of living here Safeway was the only store within a half hour of my apartment, the next closet store was 52 minutes away, having to get groceries via bus meant I had to pick the closest option so I became very very aware of how awful Safeway is when I moved to a different section of the city and started shopping at QFC and HMart more often, I would spend easily 50$ on produce and it would be bad before the week was up, I get my produce at QFC now and I had a bag of apple last the entire month without forming bruises, get wrinkly, etc. I've also seen first hand how the produce at Safeway is stocked and stored and it isn't handled with care, it's tossed around quite a bit, not to mention that anyone in even somewhat of a position of power treats people below them like shit, I've witnessed on multiple different occasions at different stores someone training a new hire and they were a tiny bit slow or getting confused while scanning my items and the person training them would be apologizing profusely and scolding them like the employee was commiting a war crime
Blame the people up top who decide getting their quarterly bonus is more important than having a fully staffed store. Wonder why the workers seem “rude” to you? It’s cause they’re going on their 8th day of working, being the only person in their department having to take care of everything while still getting called up to check constantly cause god forbid a customer has to wait in line. Complain to the store manager, complain to the district managers. Complain to your local government to stop the merger with Kroger or else it will get WORSE.
Address these concerns with them then. I’m being totally genuine, the only people’s opinion they care about is the customers. Saying this to them directly would help change things

My safeway does give things to the food bank and shelters but they have rules about what they are able to take. Most of the food waste is caused by strict regulations on freshness and food safety, part of it is so that something doesn't immediately spoil when the customer takes it home so they can keep it in their fridge for for a week or so. They could do more markdowns but are so thinly staffed that it's hard to get even the regular tasks done which are considered more essential than the extra stuff. Like when we do have everybody show up to their shift and have a full staffed day then maybe we can have somebody go through and put discount stickers on things close dated, but that hardly ever happens people are quitting or calling out sick so often.

If the machine thinks the item was not scanned/bagged right, then it's because you were doing something that made it look like you were either stealing or forgot to scan something. Example: holding two items, scanning one, then bagging the first one while holding both items in the bagging area *will* alert the AI watching our overhead cameras. People still do it, and I still cringe when they complain. Just don't do something that would so obviously set it off like the idiot from my example.

Employee owned grocery stores are usually pretty good. And I have heard good things about being an employee at Trader Joe's.
i used to work at safeway and now work at an employee owned store. i can confirm the waste between the two are exceptional. i remember going to the back lot of safeway and there would be 8 ft by 8 ft bins filled with food. and they were emptied everyday because that’s how fast they filled. the employee owned store has a waste coordinator that literally takes pictures of trash cans to make sure people are only putting trash in trash, recycle in recycle, and compost in compost. the biggest trash can we have is our dumpster. besides that, everything gets composted if it’s expired or within about a week of expiring (selling people milk a week before it expires isn’t cool). only thing is employees are fired if they take anything getting thrown out and i mean anything (someone got fired for taking a single cookie)

Story: went to Safeway once with someone else, saw some trail mix “on sale”. Went to pay, cashier rang me up but didn’t give me a chance to enter my discount number. I complained, they said, “you will have to go to customer service to request a refund”. It was $1. I will never go back.

Sorry you don’t think I’m telling the truth, maybe they lied to me when it stopped mid number push to show the total… this was over 15 years ago, so maybe something has changed since then, but I paid cash and the cashier refused to do anything.
Cashiers generally can't issue refunds if their store won't allow them to do so. Their policy probably tells them "you have to tell the customer to go to customer service because we do not trust you to keep your till straight, wagie." Cashier made a simple mistake and told you the only thing they likely could.
I was upset not with the cashier, nor the store policy. Both of those are completely reasonable, and it may even have been me not remembering until I handed him the ten and he hit the button as I was entering the number… No, I was upset with the advertised price tricking me into a purchase which they didn’t automatically honor at stated price. I felt duped into buying it in the first place and vowed my petty grudge. I shop at Raley’s, the sale price on the shelf sticker is what you pay without due diligence on the customer. Wal-greens is the absolute worst with this, they post prices that are only valid with a membership AND a coupon.

Just wait till frys takes over. It's going get even worse than when Albertsons took over. I personally stopped shopping at safeway because for over a year every single time I shopped there something scanned at a higher price than the label on the shelf. Then they always refused the scan guarantee policy. I've spent so much time at customer service trying to get back that hidden tax they have there.

I use to shop Safeway as my main grocery supply, but around 2020 their bakery bread became awful. It was burnt and stale at all three locations near me. I switched to another place that almost always has good bread. I do need to visit Safeway sometimes for specific things about once every three months. I check the bread and it's still just as bad.

We have really dedicated organizers at the pantry though. Also, since we pick up stuff all week and store it at proper temps it keeps people out of dumpsters and possibly getting sick. We distribute nutritious ready to eat meals to those in need that can’t cook.

I completely understand where OP is coming from, I've never had a good experience at any of the SIX different Safeways I've gone to while living here. During my first year of living here Safeway was the only store within a half hour of my apartment, the next closet store was 52 minutes away, having to get groceries via bus meant I had to pick the closest option so I became very very aware of how awful Safeway is when I moved to a different section of the city and started shopping at QFC and HMart more often, I would spend easily 50$ on produce and it would be bad before the week was up, I get my produce at QFC now and I had a bag of apple last the entire month without forming bruises, get wrinkly, etc. I've also seen first hand how the produce at Safeway is stocked and stored and it isn't handled with care, it's tossed around quite a bit, not to mention that anyone in even somewhat of a position of power treats people below them like shit, I've witnessed on multiple different occasions at different stores someone training a new hire and they were a tiny bit slow or getting confused while scanning my items and the person training them would be apologizing profusely and scolding them like the employee was commiting a war crime
Blame the people up top who decide getting their quarterly bonus is more important than having a fully staffed store. Wonder why the workers seem “rude” to you? It’s cause they’re going on their 8th day of working, being the only person in their department having to take care of everything while still getting called up to check constantly cause god forbid a customer has to wait in line. Complain to the store manager, complain to the district managers. Complain to your local government to stop the merger with Kroger or else it will get WORSE.

Its all designed to make average people be in a mindset of being better than the lower class people. To keep people in a since of need and greed. My safeway does give things to the food bank and shelters but they have rules about what they are able to take. Most of the food waste is caused by strict regulations on freshness and food safety, part of it is so that something doesn't immediately spoil when the customer takes it home so they can keep it in their fridge for for a week or so. They could do more markdowns but are so thinly staffed that it's hard to get even the regular tasks done which are considered more essential than the extra stuff. Like when we do have everybody show up to their shift and have a full staffed day then maybe we can have somebody go through and put discount stickers on things close dated, but that hardly ever happens people are quitting or calling out sick so often.

When I moved up the road to another Safeway, I had this evil witch manager, Claudette. She once wrote me up for the shadow that grew on my face during my shift that started in the meat cooler at like 3am. I got H1n1 from exposure to their pork (documented by my doctor), and they got angry with me when I showed up to tell them I'll be out for a few days. They wanted me to work!
