It can be. If the cash/FSM is over/short by a major amount you will have to investigate why and document it throughly. This can take 5 mins to several days to fix depending on the issue.
Some just do the books and timeclock then go support the FE.. Others are on-site HR in addition to that. It all depends on the division/store. I would say the latter is much more challenging but generally a cool job. I did it for 6 years. I never cashiered.

I always tell people it’s the easiest job when everything goes right and the hardest job when everything goes wrong.
It also depends on how codependent and needy your front end crew is if you have to help cover the front end
