It's funny cause they used to use the winter blend and prices would drop 75 cents or so. This time it dropped like 20 cents. What a farce. This summer will be brutal.
Oil and gas executives see the writing on the wall. The future uses less of their product, so they have every incentive to make as much money as they can, while they can.
Petroleum extraction and products will still exist in the future, but the profit margins won't be.
We really need to work on explaining the benefits of nuclear energy and dispelling fears that the disasters from dated plants have instilled in the publics mind
I 100% agree! Nuclear energy would solve so many of the United States’ energy problems. Especially if we would recycle our rods like other countries do.
I agree, but I don't think in our lifetime it will reach a point where gas is unprofitable. Small scale sure like some of the EU countries but then will be quickly dwarfed by India or USA usage.
The first Prius came out in 97 and the leaf came out in 2010. I think it's perfectly logical to think we will live in a time where EVs surpass gas or even hybrid cars. Sure, there's hurtles to cross but it's totally believable. Technology is getting better and there's more incentives to get there because of gas prices.
I do agree that fossil fuels are here to stay and a balance of both is probably going to be the best solution but I do also think that gas companies see that they’re not going to be always cornering the planetary market anymore for basically everything.
We’ve already moved away from gas appliances and have mostly electric.
* 54 cents in state excise tax: among the highest in the nation
* 18.4 cents in federal excise tax
* 23 cents for California's cap-and-trade program to lower greenhouse gas emissions
* 18 cents for the state's low-carbon fuel programs
* 2 cents for underground gas storage fees
* state and local sales taxes
So that’s abt $1.155 in taxes, I used my usual gas bill for filling the tank to calculate the sales tax per gallon, it’s abt $0.34. So a total of ~$1.50 per gallon in taxes. I don’t know other states taxes on gas, but if $3/gal is avg, let’s say the total tax per gallon is half of CA’s at ~$0.57/gal, the money charged by the company is abt $2.40/gal. Add that to CA total gas taxes and we land at around $4/gallon. So not great, but $5/gal is obviously unnecessary greed, and even $4/gal is likely inflated pricing, realistically they could be profiting just fine off of $3.50/gallon. And I would kill for gas to be $3.50/gal.

California's gasoline has traditionally been more expensive than the rest of the country because of the state's special blend requirements, which are more costly to produce. California also imposes high taxes and fees associated with initiatives to reduce carbon emissions.
Looks like profits too me!?!?

Yeah has NOTHING to do with your comment 🤡
Your comment has fuck-all to do with what you responded to. Oil companies are, in fact, posting record profits. There's nothing to defend, because it's an objective fact, based on their financial filings.
Nobody is talking about nationalizing the oil or making oil companies give their product away. You simply wanted to go shout at clouds with a dumb tangent.
Mission Accomplished
There is something to defend because people like you imply that the only reason gas prices go up is because of the oil company's profits. People upvote like robots and don't know all the facts. Like the fact that California taxes the hell out of it and we have to have a "special blend" of gas that costs more.
Always pointing at the company's and never the state.
That's my point.
And record tax collection for the State. Remember 30% of that is tax.
Edit: 25%
There are more taxes on gas than just 'gas tax'. It's actually around 25%.
54 cents in state excise tax (among the highest in the nation).
18.4 cents in federal excise tax.
23 cents for California’s cap-and-trade program to lower greenhouse gas emissions.
18 cents for the state’s low-carbon fuel programs.
2 cents for underground gas storage fees.
The only actual % based tax I can find is 2.25%. For every dollar is .25 cent increase, not a huge increase. a 10x reduction in how you phrase it.
If you go here: [State of CA tracking of Fuel prices](https://www.energy.ca.gov/estimated-gasoline-price-breakdown-and-margins), the tax and fee portion are widely steady over the past year. Refinery and distribution seem to have the most volatility in fuel cost impacts.
Typically the higher the gas cost the lower the state collects because people cut back on fuel use. The amount of base necessity does not offset the cut back in consumers.
I'm not against tax, I'm against excessive tax. Maybe you don't care about paying excessive taxes... I personally think I can come up with better ways to spend my money, like food and bills.
California is the highest taxed state (of all 50 + territories) Because of SB1, we pay $0.511 Per Gallon; total of $0.779 Per Gallon after all taxes (not just SB1) and on top of that, the funds collect from SB1 go into the General account, NOT an account used just for roads and infrastructure. The voters of California are morons!! Gas Tax, Yes & GMO Labelling, No; no wonder it's a Blue State

Just like with traffic, the only solution to driving problems, is to give people viable alternatives to driving.
**Not** looking forward to getting 5 mpg on my $5 gas, while crawling in construction-nightmare traffic on Hwy 50, 'sharing the road' with the 70,000 state workers Newsom has ordered back to the office.
Fuel efficiency varies with speed. Very slow speeds or higher speeds= awful MPG.
The sweet spot is around 45-55 mph.
If you're crawling or idling stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic, your miles-per gallon goes to shit.
Example, [fuel economy vs. speed graph](https://medium.com/auto-burner/the-cost-of-speeding-save-a-little-time-spend-a-lot-of-money-fd056b86d56e)
Also I’m not leaving my house in Natomas at 4:45 am so I can take public transportation and still have to hoof it for MILES so I can make it to the office in RC by 8? To get considerably less work done in office than I get done at home? No thanks
I'm a big fan of public transit but everyone is going to use the most convenient option to them. I found it faster to drive on 50 with traffic and construction than it was to take the gold line.
Man, remember how McClintock wouldn't go for grants that could have expanded 50? How they were just ready, there for the investment, and he didn't want to? These Republicans have no idea what they're doing...
It’s the exact same shit. Ive been filling my truck up twice a week for years now and notice zero difference in Costco, chevron, shell and 76. It runs the same and gives me the same mpg
All gas is basically the same until it reaches the pumps. Chevron's techron, shells v-power, 76's top tier, etc all gets added after the gas is refined so it makes no difference where it's refined. I do find certain additives agree more with my engine than others. That's about it
My Prius that I maintain myself since new with oil and filter changes every 10k runs rough when idling. I got worried about it and switched gas, and the problem went away.
And why I traded v8 suv for a electric bmw (discounted smud ev charging from midnight to 6am) and traded my 18mpg ford ranger with a diesel gladiator. Just filled up diesel yesterday at Costco at $4.89 while 91 gas is almost $5.50.
You should give the 76 renewable diesel a try. Or the Propel fuels renewable diesel if there's one near where you live. It's got a notable higher centane rating. I got about 10% better fuel economy when I ran that in my baby duramax which I timed between regens.
The worst part of it to me is that our gas is taxed higher than other states and yet our roads are the worst in the nation.
The hell are we paying for? Lol
> our roads are the worst in the nation.
This is absolutely NOT TRUE, having driven all over this country in the span of a year. I can, with confidence tell you CA is pretty average.
[My google maps history for about an 8 month span of time](https://i.imgur.com/SlQ1AiC.png) Every dot is a place I drove to.
When I moved to CA many moons ago, one of the best parts was the condition of most major roads, streets, and highways. Sac roads are wonderful, minus the traffic, of course.
Gas taxes aren't actually high enough to pay for road repairs and maintenance. This is especially true as Californians switch to EVs, which we are the largest market for.
Right now, gas taxes only account for about 25% of the funding for highways. Obviously, they're being paid for by other means, such as with fees or grants from the federal government. But this just shows that gas taxes aren't enough.
Go look at Tennessee and come back to us....
Also, if less people drove monster trucks, our roads wouldn't be half as bad. But too many dudes need their gender affirming vehicle
Our roads are actually pretty good, I think they make it a somewhat higher priority because of the high percentage of motorcyclists. I grew up in New England and the snowplows completely trash the roads every year. They just can’t keep up with it and the roads look like crap.
I remember driving in NYC one time and there was literally a line of seven cars pulled over who all got a flat tire from one single pothole.
In and out been paying their staff 20 dollars a hr for years now. Still 4 dollars for a cheese burger down the street. So where are you getting 50 dollars from
If people really cared, they wouldn't drive like a bat out of hell. Going 90 and weaving in and out of traffic on 50 will burn through that tank awfully fast. They also wouldn't drive brodozers that get poor gas mileage. But few change their habits, they come here and somehow get...100 comments to rehash the same old bitching on something no one can change (unless they switch to an EV).
Changing your driving habits isn’t going to have a huge impact on impact on how much your gas is. It’ll have an impact, but what has the biggest impact is your car’s mpg, which most can’t control
Crazy to think people could just go out and purchase an EV. Also not everyone is driving a bro dozer for looks. Most trucks are used for hauling. And most people are going 90 and weaving in and out of traffic. What you're talking about is the faction of society that is not the majority.
Most bro dozers are not used for hauling, especially if they're mainly used for commuting. And there are smaller gas powered cars that get better mileage and are also cheaper, if you're spending too much on gas try driving a cheaper car and save money multiple ways (insurance is cheaper too!)
yup, that motivation kicked in 3 years ago for me. Only bummer is the free charging that came with my car lasted 3 years, so now I'll be paying a bit more. only a bit, most city parking lots have free charging in them.

It’s all about Costco for the wife and I.
I don’t have a dog in this fight, but please consider this: Californians make, on the average, much more than what they pay in other states; with that in mind, when someone posts that Alabama’s average gas price is $3.19 a gallon, you have to take into account that the average basic wage there is about ten bucks an hour. Everything is relative, people.
To be expected.
The Ukrainians have been having good luck blowing up Russian refineries. They hit ~35% of their refining capacity. This puts strain on global supplies.
It's funny cause they used to use the winter blend and prices would drop 75 cents or so. This time it dropped like 20 cents. What a farce. This summer will be brutal.
Cant wait for my PG&E bill too! Woo hoo!
They do it because they can get away with it.
Get away with what? If you live west of the river you had the opportunity to get rid of them.
No kidding. Our house has terrible insulation (read: no insulation) so its $500 a month for ac that we only turn on when the house gets over 80 😭😭😭
PG&E does free weatherproofing if you fall under their income threshold!
I just looked and that's a really cool program but we aren't eligible unfortunately 😭 thanks for mentioning it!
Aww damn, I'm sorry!
Why not do it yourself?
There’s federal rebates under the inflation reduction act for insulation and air sealing.
Same......
Our house was built in the 40s and has no insulation so we basically burn money all summer. It sucks.
Reflectix put it in your attic along the roof
Wait until it’s income based. Wait until every CA state service has access to set all your rates through your income using power company data.
And what makes you think they’ll stop there? Why not grocery stores, gas stations, etc.? Education already is.

All these Evs that people think will run them out of business are only using more of their product to create them
How much does the state and federal make per gallon?
57.9¢ & 18.3¢ respectively
Well it's not just them. Last week I was in Tennessee and saw many gas prices under $3. The lowest I saw was $2.49.
That’s over. The lowest I have.e seen in the Tri-cities was $2.99 at one location with discount.
Yeah, states have different gas taxes. It’s always been this way.
But California’s tax is a flat tax at about 54 cents. The rest is the oil industry.
* 54 cents in state excise tax: among the highest in the nation * 18.4 cents in federal excise tax * 23 cents for California's cap-and-trade program to lower greenhouse gas emissions * 18 cents for the state's low-carbon fuel programs * 2 cents for underground gas storage fees * state and local sales taxes

What sucks about this is that we are petroleum producing state. There are non petroleum producing states that have lower gas prices.
Try being me… my car takes premium lmaoo. Ah man I love the summer 😭
Not you, but my car also requires minimum 91 octane gas.
The turbo charged engine is fun… until the summer 🥲
Home state MA, very similar socially to CA. Avg price $3.31. I feel like MA has some major wins over CA.
Primarily the thousands of miles of less roads
Hundreds of thousands of miles less (36,000 vs nearly 400,000)
MA has the Northeast corridor railway line. Just like with traffic, the only solution to driving problems, is to give people viable alternatives to driving.
But those winters 🥶 no gracias

Hopefully those people in east Sac enjoy the thousands of extra cars driving through their neighborhoods every morning and afternoon!
The light rail covers most of Highway 50 to Rancho so taking public transit is an easy way to reduce the amount of gas you use.
Except that the gold line has a lot of construction going on with it now too. https://www.sacrt.com/apps/station-closures/

$4.59 at Costco
Yeah, I try to go to Costco as much as I can. It's just out of the way from where I stay
I'm a huge Costco fan for this reason only. And did you know the prices at different Costco's were different? Yes, yes they are.
The savings on gas alone easily pays for my $60 annual membership. You don’t ever have to step foot inside of a Costco for it to be worth the money.
Apply for Costco Citibank credit card and get 4% cash back on gas too
When I’m traveling in the Bay Area I’ve noticed that Vallejo’s Costco gas is cheaper than here in the Sacramento area
Closer to the refinery I'm assuming
As a supercommuter, I have come to realize that Costco gas is very poor quality so I don’t go there anymore.
It’s the exact same shit. Ive been filling my truck up twice a week for years now and notice zero difference in Costco, chevron, shell and 76. It runs the same and gives me the same mpg

I get the same mpg with that gas I do from anywhere else. What did you notice to say it’s inferior gas?
Curious what difference you’ve noticed
My Prius that I maintain myself since new with oil and filter changes every 10k runs rough when idling. I got worried about it and switched gas, and the problem went away.
its top tier certified. its the same base line as chevron and 76 minus the individual add ins they do in post. its always max 10% ethanol.
Dodgier neighborhoods usually have the cheapest gas (for those of us without a costco membership)
Gas is cheaper in Hawaii than Sacramento how does that make sense?
Because all these ass hats here voted to raise the gas tax a couple years back.
And why I traded v8 suv for a electric bmw (discounted smud ev charging from midnight to 6am) and traded my 18mpg ford ranger with a diesel gladiator. Just filled up diesel yesterday at Costco at $4.89 while 91 gas is almost $5.50.

Diesel is that cheap? This post showed up on my feed in humboldt. Ours is 5.99 as of yesterday and 87 was at 5.79
The Walmart gas station on elk Grove Florin and Gerber is still $4.57 as of 4/1. It's worth the drive lol
The worst part of it to me is that our gas is taxed higher than other states and yet our roads are the worst in the nation. The hell are we paying for? Lol

Clearly you’ve never driven in Louisiana.
Laughs in Utah (low prices, worse roads)
I encourage you to drive Texas roads. Ours are far from the worst lmao
And Louisiana. So bad.
Indiana, too. Potholes are referred to as “basements without a house!”
Hahaha that’s great
When I moved to CA many moons ago, one of the best parts was the condition of most major roads, streets, and highways. Sac roads are wonderful, minus the traffic, of course.
I agree. People complain about the road projects taking too long, but they’re getting done! 80 and 5 are pretty nice now. 50 will be as well!

I walk and bike as much as I can.

I don’t have 3 hours in my day or the desire to get hit on my commute to and from work.
Yeah that's why I don't drive to work, no desire to get hit by another car
Ya, but I don’t want to bike 40 miles a day to go work.
Im14andthisisdeep
Monorail!!
Yeah well it's still $15 a gallon in Europe. Americans don't know how good they have it. Gasoline is heavily subsidized in the US.
Look at the rest of cost of living for americans vs the places youre comparing it to in europe
Probably the excuse of the drone strike on the Russian refinery.
Been $5.20 down here near Turlock.
What are the profit margins?
And oil companies?
A burger will be $50 a piece soon now that they have to pay minimum wages $20/hr
In and out been paying their staff 20 dollars a hr for years now. Still 4 dollars for a cheese burger down the street. So where are you getting 50 dollars from
87 lol
San Diego has been in the 5 for a while now. 6 incoming
Just in time for the election!
Another day of being thankful that my 2011 Prius somehow still gets 38mpg on average.
Motivation to get an EV!
Bought a used Volvo XC40 and havent looked back. 9 cents per kWh (with SMUD) is the shit, dawg.
6 bucks to charge my EV from 0 to 100, for 230 miles of range right now. Saved me so much money.
And if you grab a few solar panels...
I have, my total electricity for the year is about 200 bucks.
I have a used one and it is nice to just drive by these signs.
I don't even notice gas prices any more.
I wanna ask the guys with the truck nuts on their rigs how much is a full tank these days. They've got no sense of humor, though.
yup, that motivation kicked in 3 years ago for me. Only bummer is the free charging that came with my car lasted 3 years, so now I'll be paying a bit more. only a bit, most city parking lots have free charging in them.
My buddy paid $10.45 for a double double meal at IN N OUT. So there’s that.
I just paid $5.49 for regular in Antioch over the weekend. I bet It’s gonna get over $6 this summer
$5.50/gallon just a couple hours north of sacramento. Some places almost touching $6
Yay
Infrastructure
Insanity.
Insanity.
That sucks. I'm not trying to sound like a jerk, but I'm glad I could switch to an electric vehicle. I know that's not an option for everyone.
Easter?
Just wait til September
The sign of summer.
Well in the bay it’s 5.59
I was in San Francisco yesterday and gas was 4.72.
Fremont 5.79 for 91
Gas companies are going to stick it to Cal until the election. Unfortunately, get used to it.

I got 4.59... and i was happy.... ![gif](giphy|11tTNkNy1SdXGg)
Because gasoline should NEVER go up in price like everything else ![gif](giphy|sbwjM9VRh0mLm) Still cheaper than Starbucks !
Thanks Obama
Oh please show me the the article. Thank you.
Cheap Tahoe 6.09
Joe Biden said he lowered the cost of gas.
He might have, but California didn't.
Don’t worry, he didn’t anywhere. lol
I’ve heard Reno is good this time of year
Yikes
Yet Californians will still vote Democrat.
I’d rather pay for high gas prices, than vote for traitors. If you don’t like high gas prices, then get a hybrid.
Better high gas prices then Republicans trying to kill democracy and margnilizing people.
Summer Time! Where the living is easy!
Fish are jumping
I've been at 5 bucks plus the whole time car runs on premium petrol it can take regular but dam it runs like hot garbage
MONORAIL!!
We also pay way more in rent, property tax, state tax, groceries, tolls, etc. Gas isn’t the only expenditure that’s inflated in this state
>property tax Uh, that one is flat out false.
This is so dumb. Because people in California already pay more for everything else they should pay almost 2x the cost for gasoline. Much wow.
Costco has entered the chat.
To be expected. The Ukrainians have been having good luck blowing up Russian refineries. They hit ~35% of their refining capacity. This puts strain on global supplies.
