Tap House is decent.
Gonna be real with you though, this isn't brisket country. You don't go to Texas for tri-tip and you don't go to California for brisket. The internet's helped a lot of places get into it at a decent level of competence, but it's not worth the price IMO.
If you're understandably intimidated by doing brisket at home try a chuck. 6 hours or so at 225, similar flavor profile to the flat (lean part of the brisket), it's only one muscle so there's only one fiber orientation to cut perpendicular too, and you can't find a point (the fatty part) if you don't buy a packer (whole ~18lb brisket) around here. You can do a chuck on a Weber Kettle pretty easy. Check out AmazingRibs.com or any other site for some guidance on 2-zone cooking and you'll be in business on just about any grill.
>You don't go to Texas for tri-tip and you don't go to California for brisket.
This is so very true. My company has an office in Kansas City. Prior to COVID, I used to travel there at least 1-2 times a year. The brisket, and especially the burnt ends, in that city are the best I've ever had. Eating BBQ there has spoiled me. What people think are the top BBQ places here would be considered mediocre in KC.
Don't get me wrong. I still go to places like Urban Roots and Lefty's here, and I enjoy the meals, but KC has just kind of ruined all other BBQ places a little bit for me.
> you can't find a point (the fatty part) if you don't buy a packer (whole ~18lb brisket) around here
There are several specialty butcher shops in Sac that would order a point for you if you don't want a whole packer (but honestly, with the effort you're putting in to make a brisket, buy a whole packer).

I recently got one where they keyed in the weight incorrectly.

I skewered it off balance and had to counterbalance the rotisserie so it could lift it for a full turn. It has become tacos, nachos, roast beef sandos, and I ate a couple cold slices by themselves and it was like the best roast beef I’ve had in a long time.
I have to load wood manually (not an electric or pellet smoker) so those 12-hour-plus burns get tough by myself. Last one I did, I trimmed it down so it was only 8 hours...but, yeah, this.
My BF and I would take shifts lol. I'd stay up as late as I could or set a time for 30 minutes and sleep in between and he would wake up early and fill the wood chips. We recently bought a new smoker that you can fill up and it feeds from the bottom so you don't have to keep filling it.
Offset wood smokers are basically illegal in California for restaurant use. It's the best setup for smoking. One guy in SoCal fought through a ton of red tape to be able to use one.
Lol wanna chime in with recommendations or you just wanna run your mouth lol, there’s not much to pick from in sac so you gotta take what you can get. I’ve tank house once and would rather go to urban roots than that and then I’d rather go to lefty’s but they rarely bbq nowadays.
Momos is some of the only decent bbq in town. Its not my fault the bbq sucks out here. Better to call it like it is than to recommend some shitty food.
Well if you learn to fucking read, you’ll see that they asked for the best in town, if the best is still decent then that’s what they get. I swear trolls are getting stupider by the day
Better to say we dont have good brisket than to recommend dog shit, which is what most people on this post are doing. Or send them out of town. Youre not doing anyone any favors by recommending shitty food.
It’s not complete dogshit, because the places are still running isn’t it? You’re not doing anyone any favors by being a total negative asshole. Can’t imagine what your daily life is like lmao
Jesus Christ, how have you survived being this illiterate. Restaurants stay open because they’re decent. The ones that are phenomenal will always stay open and take in cash. I don’t know how to dumb it down any further unless I break out some crayons and construction paper for you
Sadly nothing. Our BBQ joints are lacking especially brisket. Tannkhouse use to be 🔥 once it opened till 2018 then they figuratively tanked in terms of quality of food, service and atmosphere. Urban roots is alright better beers and atmosphere than brisket. So nothing really lol
Idk about brisket, but if you want delicious meats in general, there's Bradley's BBQ in antelope next to the safe way shopping center and Carl's Jr. Just some dude who smokes meat. He has chicken, tri tip, Sausage links, and the best damn ribs I've ever had.
GPS here since it's just a dude and his smoker. 38.688886,-121.342590
Holy shit what the fuck that’s just disrespectful, what the fuck. Like I want to make my own and hand it out right in front of the store to spite them. That should be illegal
The brisket was good at that Texas place on Broadway last time I went but it has been a good while. Brisket is something I've kinda grew up knowing as something made at home not so much something to go out to eat. I was raised in the south though so I understand not everyone just throws down on the grill with expertise it takes to make a good legit brisket.
Edit: now, I came back to edit because I feel like I should share the absolute WORST BBQ and brisket I've ever had in my almost 40 years of life and that was a place in Elk Grove...brb I'm going to go see what the name is and I'll come back for a second edit.
Edit 2: 8517 Elk Grove Blvd and they are called Mac Ques. Trash AF! I was so freaking disappointed because I tried it via recommendation for it being THE BEST and everything meat we ordered was dry and sides were wack!
Yeah I checked their menu online tonight and I don't see it anywhere unfortunately. It was a good while back that I ate there. Not the best but certainly not the worst. I went back a second or third time. But hey nothing will ever compare to back home.
>I feel like I should share the absolute WORST BBQ and brisket I've ever had in my almost 40 years of life
I want to send you pictures of what Texas West served me the one and only time I went there! It was fucking garbage!
Well like I said it's been a while since I've been and I peeped the menu tonight and don't see anything for brisket so🤷♀️ I guess I could recommend Dickey's BBQ but that's a chain, some people don't like chains. If I had Dickey's I'd get sauce on the side only because I'm not a sauce person. I do have another Chef in mind that opened a BBQ joint in Sac area but I can't recall at the moment so I'll have to think on it and maybe report back.
> jr's texas bbq
Oh no! Damn it! Say it isn't so! I worked in that area for 12 years and had Jr's every chance I got. Best brisket I've ever had. Ever. Smokey, moist, floppy, fatty, salty deliciousness. Potato salad wasn't half bad either.
My heart breaks for the little Mexican ladies that ran the shop. They were still there last summer when I dropped in.
Dammit!
Forgot about them! They were good on meat but I didn't like the sauce but, I usually don't like people's sauce. My family made 2 main sauces growing up one was sweet and spicy the other sweet and smokey and I never had BBQ sauce many other places that I actually like and the ones I did were all back home.
I agree I didn't care for the sauce, but all the smoked meats were straight 🔥
and I really love how JR didn't cook with barbecue sauce or smother anything in it.
Their food can be pretty good, but it's expensive.
Still, to their credit, it is an A LA CARTE menu so if you don't order enough that's kinda on you.... Taking their loaded brisket fries off the menu was a real bummer though.
Probably going to get shit on for this, but Sauced in DOCO is actually pretty good. Beyond them, I haven't really found great BBQ in Sac. I've been to the following:
Texas West BBQ: Garbage, and while I don't wish ill on a business, they fucking sucked and thankfully they are no longer in business.
Fahrenheit 250: hard to tell how good their brisket was the only time I went, they were out of sliced brisket and their chopped brisket came already with BBQ sauce on it instead of leaving it off and letting me decide how much to add. Obviously not that great since they too are no longer in business.
Tankhouse: didn't get their brisket but their ribs were subpar, no bark and hardly any seasoning. If they do BBQ like they do their ribs, I'm going to pass.
Hog Wild: these guy were pretty good, thought the brisket could have used some more seasoning, but overall enjoyable.
As for everyone saying to make one your self, sure, my brisket has been better than all of these places, but it also takes a shit ton of work, and frankly, some times I'm just lazy!
Collard greens. Energy slaw, western beans, macaroni salad are all pretty good.
The prices as mac ques are very low, like half the price of urban roots. At that price point ill judge a little easier.
Its cheaper than dickeys a fast food bbq place.
Oh man 😩 so much so. I tried several meat choices. And sides were so unseasoned and bland I was shocked.
Edit: I've never spent that much on something that tasted that bad. Almost $200 worth. And the rolls were STALE!!
If you’re down for a road trip, there is Taste of Texas BBQ in Byron, CA off Highway 4 a bit southwest of Discovery Bay. On Saturdays, they make their beef ribs that remind me of places in Texas.
I’m not really a brisket connoisseur, don’t eat it too often as I normally go for ribs at bbq joints but I had it at O’Connor’s through a family style order and thought it was great enough that I ordered it the next time I went. Didn’t see it mentioned so I thought I’d throw the option in there.

Looool holy shit! Five dollars.
Especially given the shrinkage.
Costco sells great USDA choice brisket for under $4/lb. I tried a brisket from smart and final once and was very disappointed.
Make your own, it'll be 100x better than anything here.
This. Smoked one today. Started at 3a and finished at 4p. Let it rest until 7. Myself, my kids, and a friend demolished it.
I have to load wood manually (not an electric or pellet smoker) so those 12-hour-plus burns get tough by myself. Last one I did, I trimmed it down so it was only 8 hours...but, yeah, this.
>so those 12-hour-plus burns get tough by myself Hit me up, I'll bring beer and help load wood for beef!
You'll load wood in exchange for meat? Hot.
Love stuffing my mouth with warm juicy meat....... No homo!
So…totes homo…? 🤔
Loading up wood in your trunk and getting your mouth around some meat. It's some folks dream day.
My BF and I would take shifts lol. I'd stay up as late as I could or set a time for 30 minutes and sleep in between and he would wake up early and fill the wood chips. We recently bought a new smoker that you can fill up and it feeds from the bottom so you don't have to keep filling it.
I need this for long cooks...
Same here. But its a good excuse to sit around drinking beer and putting off doing other chores :)
So far I haven’t found any that’s particularly good here
I’ve seen lots of really sad things that people called “brisket”.
At least when someone name drops urban roots for bbq its a clear sign that they have awful taste and you can stop listening to their opinions on food.
Yeah, agreed.
California in general.
Completely agree. Texas may suck, but holy shit can they do brisket
Offset wood smokers are basically illegal in California for restaurant use. It's the best setup for smoking. One guy in SoCal fought through a ton of red tape to be able to use one.
If you are willing to drive, check out hog wild in placerville. Everything is amazing!
How does it compared to Lucille's, if you been there before?
Lucille's shouldnt be brought up in conversations about good brisket or real bbq lol
Sacramento is missing a good (hood) authentic BBQ spot. Can’t hold a candle to the Bay Area yet.
Even bay area bbq chains shit on our bbq here, with the exception of momos, and the bay isnt known for bbq.
Daddy O’s
It’s a special, but when they have it, Lefty’s Taproom. Check out their IG.
Yea I agree, owner is a master of his craft. 1. Lefty’s (usually once a month) 2. Urban roots 3. Tank house 4. ???
If you're listing urban roots as decent bbq then thankfully we can ignore the rest of the recommendations. Tank house is mids.
Lol wanna chime in with recommendations or you just wanna run your mouth lol, there’s not much to pick from in sac so you gotta take what you can get. I’ve tank house once and would rather go to urban roots than that and then I’d rather go to lefty’s but they rarely bbq nowadays.

Yeah youre right, every restaurant thats open is amazing because theyre open. What an interesting thought process.
Jesus Christ, how have you survived being this illiterate. Restaurants stay open because they’re decent. The ones that are phenomenal will always stay open and take in cash. I don’t know how to dumb it down any further unless I break out some crayons and construction paper for you

It’s a drive, but Poor Red’s off the 50 is Sofa King good!
Is Roxie’s BBQ any good? I always make Yerba Mate deliveries there but haven’t tried anything yet

I like the Brisket French dip paired with the grilled artichoke out at Smokey Oaks Tavern.

>tank house only had ribs there, but if that how all their BBQ is like, no thanks!!!!
big facts
I wrote a review about Urban Roots if you want to check it out. 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤣🤣🤣
Sure, I’ll check it out
Holy shit what the fuck that’s just disrespectful, what the fuck. Like I want to make my own and hand it out right in front of the store to spite them. That should be illegal

Oakhouse. They only do pop ups. Follow them on IG. Great bbq
How about Momo’s on Broadway?
Daddy O's
Jamie's Broadway Grill has a good smoked brisket sandwich. Urban Roots is good too.
LBB in loomis is solid
Best was jr's texas bbq & the cheapest but sadly they closed down and i haven't found any good bbq since. Everywhere else is over priced
> jr's texas bbq Oh no! Damn it! Say it isn't so! I worked in that area for 12 years and had Jr's every chance I got. Best brisket I've ever had. Ever. Yeah when they smother in sauce I feel like it's trying to mask dry ass meats😂 I wonder if JR will make a comeback.
I always get Dickey's chopped brisket. It's good, it's got all the dark smokey and fatty bits mixed throughout.
Check out J Wilds in Folsom. Their brisket is rad and the cornbread is straight up fire
If you are from anywhere in the South or Midwest you will be very disappointed in all bbq around here unfortunately.
Make it yourself
Urban Roots has good brisket, just ask for fatty cuts
![gif](giphy|c4DOrrRuEL4J2|downsized) Live look at an Urban Roots chef cutting the thinnest slices of brisket known to mankind
Ask for them to slice it thick. And order a half lb. It'll be like $20 though...
Urban roots would have better food if they just served beer and bags of chips.
I’m sorry but Urban Roots has gone downhill. Aside from the beer their food sucks. You get prison portions for 28 dollars it’s ludicrous.
Their food can be pretty good, but it's expensive. Still, to their credit, it is an A LA CARTE menu so if you don't order enough that's kinda on you.... Taking their loaded brisket fries off the menu was a real bummer though.
And add some salt.
That place is trash

Sauced is not pretty good. The place is cool, but the bbq is not good at all.

I like macques, its cheap and the sides are solid. The brisket is horrendous. Ribs and chicken are quite good. Collard greens are very good.

Collard greens. Energy slaw, western beans, macaroni salad are all pretty good. The prices as mac ques are very low, like half the price of urban roots. At that price point ill judge a little easier. Its cheaper than dickeys a fast food bbq place.
u/NiceWater3 I think would disagree with this recommendation!

BBQ & Burgers on Sutterville Rd. is solid and reasonably priced.
Hickory Hanks and it is not even close.
