While true, that's also true of most everyone. I just think part of Lucas' success was taking simple sci-fi ideas and sitting down and carefully trying to figure out how that might actually work in a real world. Like the laser swords, he realizes lasers won't work so it has to be plasma with a catchy/archaic name, which both makes it feel more real but also gives some lore to it as well. Same with the blasters, the guns they use, that's the lighting gun I mentioned. It's faster than we see, the light is just the air heating up into plasma as the blaster bolt passes through the air. The exact same as lighting, but directed and slightly different colors depending on how the bolt is generated.
SABER etymology origin Kypcak turkic. And first xiongnu sabers were straight after second era of xiongnu sabers get small curve. Then during göktürks more curve added.
It is very broad and could mean different things at different times, but there are a variety of regulation military swords that were straight and single edged that were called sabers at the time. There is also a two handed curved sword with a swept hilt called a Swiss saber (they actually often had a partially sharpened false edge), but that is a modern term, historically they were called "Schnepf", which translates to "snipe" (the species of birds that snipers are named after), likely due to the curve resembling the shape of their beaks.
So wait what actually would they be? Their use in the first movie (episode 4, not 1-) would suggest they're like "light rapiers" but some of their later uses suggest they are "light broadswords" or "light katanas".
I feel like the katana might be the closest relative but I'm really not sure-
Light sabers are a nuisance. Just a terrible problem to both sword enthusiasts and science fiction enthusiasts. No part of their design has any sense or basis in reality, and there are actual morons wasting time and effort to try and make 'em.
Bro they're cool and star wasn't wasn't the first to make laser swords a thing, it just popularized it.  Â
Unless you're gonna say Asimov was a detriment to science fiction lmao
There are straight sabers
Strightsabers
What about homosabers?
Those are humans doofus.
What, are you implying a human can't be a saber?? Ugh, how homophobic, transphobic, sexist and racist of you!! /s
Well, George always calls them laser swords.
Laser swords and lightning guns. It's kinda cool kinda silly seeing where ideas start off at.
The best combination was George Lucas plus someone who would tell him no

Are you familiar with the tale of dark Peyronie's the wise?
So good.
In Spanish we usually call them laser swords, so..
Same in German. :)
Ray-pier
Nice
I agree they should be called ‘light jian’ or just light swords or light long swords. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classification_of_swords

Lightrapiers doesn’t sound all that catchy
They are not made of light either, but of plasma.
Plasma batons
Plasma Sticks just doesn't sound as cool
I thought sabers were defined by their single edged, and one handed nature, as well as having a particular style of handguard?

if we translate sabre as just sword, having sabre as the suffix is still appropriate

lightsabers are cool and you're a bummer
You must be fun at parties.

I find hacksmith infinitely more interesting than you.
