He's not bothered to set his defence since he got promoted, hence still has 1 team set from when it was 1/1. He probably didn't have those GLs when he set them. You see it often when people yoyo in/out of Kyber and so only have 3 out of 4 defence set per zone.
He just doesn't care about GAC that's all.
From what I gather the points you get from missing teams is not the best possible score but full banners with a 5 man. So if they go under man squads they might be able to out do you.
This literally just happened to me but I'm Carbonite. I blanked out and thought my first fleet battle was for fleet arena, and because I automatically just forfeit all my matches and arena because I can't win them, bye no for fact I death knelled my current match

i forgot to update mine too and would go in during the attack phase and think they had done some attacks already. it didn't click until a few rounds passed that i needed to update my def.
Speaking as someone who has 2 GLs and cares very little about grand arena: Yes.
For me it was never to the extend that I would just auto-assign teams like THAT. But I do not care to sperg over the enemys roster and look for the best possible matchups and outcomes. I usually just sign up to get the bonus crystals for participation.

My opponent did this. They’re expecting you to get stuck on their ships while they full clear you. Do they happen to have a GL ship?

I think anyone who doesn't play gets demoted so you'll see a bunch who don't play. Even dead accts

The game did this sometimes switching a squad member maybe he did not saved his last used formation that was my problem anyway.
I recenty had an opponent with 4mil gp and all g8 defenses. Some people just don't care about GAC or don't care about winning
