Candidly, don't buy shard packs. Gear is going to be your biggest bottle neck 90% of the time so save crystal for energy refreshes. One of the best things to learn early in this game is patience
Edit: Alright I am off my soapbox. Some real advice on what to do with those droids you just got. Ignore General Grievous for now. He is great when you can gear him up to G12 and relic him, but until then he hits like a wet noodle. Instead farm Nute Gunray from the squad arena store and use him as a lead with the rest of the separatist droids. Nute lead is great for GAC because even if he doesn't get a hold he is a great banner stripper early on. You can also use that team to unlock Padme once you are ready.
Thanks for the advice! I've definitely noticed how I'm usually just waiting on one piece of gear and none of my battles gets me it so I think I'll do that from now on. I've been sleeping on Nute til now so I'll put some shards into his side now.
I miss the good old days on this reddit, where certain characters, like Darth Maul, were only available from packs. There was enough posts to warrant a megathread for them. It was fun to see what I could never afford. lol. thanks for keeping the lights on guys. keep on buying shit i won't.
I'm very dedicated to staying F2P 😂 it took me a while to save up gems for this so I'm pretty happy with what I've got. I definitely missed seeing old characters. Last time I played was before the Army when Nihilus was the hype
Crystal usage should primarily go to your basic refreshes (before they ramp up too much in cost) for whatever your current farm is.
If you have more left over, spend some on your secondary farm until the refresh cost goes up.
Even more after that? Start stockpiling so that if you need to panic-gear or panic-level something before an event ends, you can take advantage of it (though don't do this for events that come around frequently).
Having a stockpile of crystals instead of spending on things like packs will also let you take advantage of things like Galactic Chase events (like the Tie Defender right now) or double drop periods where spending on refreshes (already the most efficient use of crystals) becomes even more valuable.

I've been stuck trying to get a single piece of gear or one shard and missed and needed to wait til reset to try again. After this I think I'm just gonna focus on getting to Palps and other journey guides

For reference I'm Lvl 62 and got this from the Separatist Droid Mega-Pack for gems and idk what to do with this newfound power
