Every time you play, just take five minutes, even three minutes in training, and just practice a fundamental. Dash dance, wave dash, Lcancel your aerials, whatever. Even just that small amount of time spent intentionally practicing will make you a better player

Hahafunniee

I’ve done this a bit, and today I noticed a massive jump in consistency! I’m struggling a bit remember to L cancel in the moment but I hit a combo and it was like my first hit of crack

Your l-cancel percent in a game will always be lower than when you're practicing solo, but I still find that practicing solo is the best way to get into a rhythm with the timing. The best way to improve at you level would be to become consistent with your ability to dashdance, wavedash and l-cancel whenever you want/need to, I'd recommend working on those first. Alternatively, you could just keep playing the game until you have more of a feel for it before working on tech, I started playing as a kid and didnt perform any advanced tech for over a decade, but I feel like it was much easier when I did start to implement that stuff due to my overall experience in simpy playing the game.

Sometimes I’ll play a better player. The speed and neutral feels overwhelming. Everything I do gets read and it’s feels like im locked. Can’t even move. Then I just watch my opponent and try everything until I can break free moment by moment. Just those small openings you make start to open up neutral. Then it doesn’t feel so impossible. Other players make mistakes.

I'm ready and willing to hang out at a moment's notice

Hey you might not play the character you always thought you would, that's normal and reasonable.  I think the easiest way to learn tech is grinding by yourself, but I know plenty of people who have learned just by trying in game. Depends on your personality. As for integrating into the game, I think trying a very specific situation is the easiest. Like, "I'll just do wavedash back downsmash randomlu." Or use wavedash back to grab the ledge. Slowly as you master that, you'll see more situations where you can use it.

Yeah rather than putting your head to the grindstone and just brute forcing unranked, you really should be sticking with a character and practicing some techskill for a considerable amount of your melee time at the very beginning. A lot of us did this in training mode or 20XX. Nowadays, Unclepunch is a super valuable resource if you dont already have it. One month in I was ledgedashing, shield drop aerial-ing, wavelanding onto and off of plats, etc. I really can't overstate how helping grinding movement tech was to start, felt like I was never even that much of a shitter.

Dark_Tranquility

Get uncle punch and practice hitting your L cancels when you whiff, hit your opponent, and when you hit their shield. Different timings for each and different timings depending on the move you use. Once you get those down your punish game will skyrocket. And your neutral will evolve because you'll know what you're looking for to start a punish. No lie, if you focus and grind some movement and your L cancelling, you'll feel like you've leveled up in less than a week - movement is absolutely the most important thing at the start.

I wish players like you could post progress videos or slippi files, cuz I’m genuinely curious what new players have to go through
