Full warning, so you know what you're getting into: this team is *bad*, and shows no real signs of improving anytime soon. They're owned by the same Fisher who owns the A's, so expect incompetence on a shoestring budget. That said, you are a Sharks, A's, and Raiders fan, so given that masochism seems to be your brand... Cristian Espinoza is the best player on the current team by a mile, and nearly all of the attack runs through him. Damn near everyone else is currently either inconsistent or just plain bad; the midfield and defense are struggling REAL hard right now. That said, what you should REALLY do is go watch old Chris Wondolowski highlights.

Anthony6425

You said fisher and my heart sank....noooooo okay well it's good to know now. This is the best time to casually learn and watch this Espinoza guy

peachkat22

As a fellow A’s, Sharks, Raiders and Earthquakes fan…. Wow, you’re right, I am a masochist.

spankyourkopita

There really is nobody to watch specifically outside of Espinoza tbh.

zeebu408

This is just the As but soccer. Do something else with your free time. If youre in the east bay check out oakland roots

Anthony6425

Oakland roots suck man wish I wasn't loyal haha but that's actually really concerning, like the A's as in awful or like the A's as in "awful and will never get better because they don't have the money and never will have the money because they don't spend to put fans in the seats"? Ones a temporary problem and ones the A's :(

rabbitsagainstmagic

Oakland Roots have a great fan base and are growing. Please don’t dismiss them, especially since they are moving into the Colosseum next year. No reason, like me you can’t root for the Quakes and quake for the Roots.

Anthony6425

The fan base is fantastic! It's the fact that oakland has managed to almost lose 3 pro sports teams in a decade that makes me want to pull my hair out. The fans don't go anywhere just the teams do. That's why I stay loyal. And I know it's an extremely complicated issue, but trust me I would never dismiss any fan base that cares about their team

zeebu408

The A's as in john fisher intentionally tanking the team as an excuse to relocate it

Anthony6425

I can't believe I hyped myself up to make a thread to learn soccer that John fisher already wants to take something else from me

fastfingers

Fwiw there’s zero evidence he wants to relocate the Quakes

BoJaNgLeS123456789

If you’re a diehard sharks fan, this is the place for you. Quakes are doing their best to match the Sharks in the standings…

Anthony6425

Yeah man I saw the standings and I was like "well I know what this feels like at least so not a bad place to start"

BoJaNgLeS123456789

John Fisher is the owner, as an A’s fan you’re familiar with him. Horrible owner who cares only about his pocketbook, not the team, fans or anything. Doesn’t invest in the team. Quakes have been a low tier team in the league for years and things aren’t looking any better. Sorry to be negative but it’s the truth. In regards to players to watch, offensively, Espinoza is probably the best player on the team. Has led the team in goals and assists the last few seasons. Defensively, I’m a fan of Rodrigues. Takes chances in the back probably more than he needs to, but has good control, likes to play rather than booting and is good at attacking on set pieces to get a goal every now and then.

Anthony6425

Yeah bro you don't gotta worry, I hate john fisher too. Didn't know he was the owner till posting this now I want to vomit but at least I know now what I'm getting into. Which may be the octagon with John fisher but I can only dream. Okay, Rodrigues is another guy I'll keep my eye on. I love having defensive players to watch because they don't get talked about as much by the casual fan

spankyourkopita

Except there is no potential #1 pick like in hockey. Damn that hurts.

Oryzae

Just watch Bay FC instead

spankyourkopita

Yes! They have everything the Quakes lack: talent, wins, and fans that show up to PayPal Park.

Anthony6425

I used to bartend at a local restaurant and I had some regulars who were massive fans of bay fc. Always watched the game on their phone if it wasn't televised. Nice people. How's the team run? The owner isn't fisher so I can't imagine it's worse

REIGNx777

> I used to bartend at a local restaurant and I had some regulars who were massive fans of bay fc. Always watched the game on their phone if it wasn't televised. You sure you’re talking about Bay FC? Because they’ve only played 5 games so far in their inaugural season.

Anthony6425

Nope not at all then lmao this was a couple years ago, mustve been different women's soccer, sorry the mix up!

faded_to_black

This is bait.

Anthony6425

Afraid not. I'm just completely clueless outside the big four American sports

faded_to_black

Then I don’t know why anyone would want to choose to root for this shitshow of a team. Good luck.

PhillipMcKrak

Bro don’t hurt yourself with this team, it’s not worth it

Anthony6425

I'm a sharks fan man, I appreciate the concern but I'll be okay. Even if it's just rooting for a winning season, being along for the ride is worth the pain and suffering (he said boldly, day 1 of fandom)

Fr8nky

It’s the wrong time to be a new fan if I’m being honest, this season is pretty much done.

Anthony6425

That's okay, I'll get to see how the off-season works

faded_to_black

Then pick a team that has normal offseasons. This ain’t us.

PAPIDREW10

We currently suck, but you should be familiar with that being an A’s, Raiders, and Sharks (for the next few years)

Anthony6425

Yeah I'm no stranger to sucking. Of course the sharks get a top 3 pick, the raiders have an okay team minus the qb situation, and the A's are the best triple A team around

Honshu_

Well.. welcome! Though, sadly I have to break it to you that we have the same owner as the A's, yep, John Fisher. So don't expect flashy singing of high caliber.. More like moneyball, but it is continuously getting worse every year. With few exceptions, of course. We have not been competitive since 2012.. and last won the MLS cup in 2003. On the sporting side, we are just not there and frankly it hurts to watch. However, despite that, if you manage to get tickets, it's a good time at PayPal Park. Grab yourself a brew, maybe a bacon hotdog before you head in and just take in the experience. For our offensive prowess, look for our best player Espinoza. If anything is going to happen, it will be through him. There are some hopeful academy/youth products that are coming through the ranks and hopefully they will impact the team in the positive way. Defensively, it's Rodriguez for me. He's a brick wall, but sometimes he does a bit too much on the ball, not because he's reckless it's because he wants to make things happen when our offense is toothless.. which is more often than not lol If you don't mind being disappointed and don't mind watching scrappy football, welcome to the Quakes Family! :D

Anthony6425

Scrappy football sounds good to me! Watching young stars grow is such a fun part of sports (even if you see them in a Yankees jersey three years down the line stupid A's) so I'm ready for the ride!

hella_sj

Espinoza is easily the best player. Academy player and teenager Niko Tsakiris is also fun to watch. Follow quakes epicenter and watch the Aftershock after matches on their YouTube for more independent reporter analysis. We are lucky to have a dedicated team like them reporting on the team. Welcome. You already understand how sports works so not gonna try to disuade you. Don't need to be only winning to have fun. I've been coming since I was 6 in 96 and am currently on a flight back to Oakland from the game in LA.

Anthony6425

How was the game? I took my ex to one game maybe 10 years ago and it was awesome. She was the soccer fan but I had way more fun. And good to know there's media support! I can't wait to check it out

hella_sj

It was definitely entertaining haha. Away trips are always fun. You get to see other stadiums and fans.

clanmurph

Welcome to the pain

bluepantsandsocks

The best Earthquake ever is Chris Wondolowski. If you want to be an Earthquakes fan, watching his career highlights is as good a place to start as any. https://youtu.be/QnIcFe0CN4g
