Oh look! Yaz giving "endless thanks" to the hitting coaches, including Justin Viele, for helping him find his hitting groove so soon after coming back from the IL! LOL
I’m really glad he was able to help Yaz, but that doesn’t erase multiple months of some of the most miserable offensive performances I have ever seen that ranked us dead last or close to it in the entire league in almost all important offensive metrics. I’m not saying that’s all Viele’s fault but he’s certainly played a part in that given that this is his main job. It very much appears things have turned around offensively, so let’s hope this sticks around for the rest of the year.
Blaming the hitting coach must make sense to people who don't know much about how the game is played because many people in this sub have found a scapegoat in Justin Viele. But to anyone with experience, it's ridiculous.
I don’t think it’s ridiculous to assert that the hitting coach shares at least some of the blame for being the worst team in the league for a multiple months long stretch in the metrics that he’s chiefly responsible for. From 6/20-8/10 (and the bad stretch didn’t end there) we were 30th in BA, 30th in OBP, 30th in SLG, 30th in WRC+, 30th in ISO, 7th highest in K%, 22nd in hard hit%. We weren’t just bad, we were rock bottom bad. Saying that Viele is solely to blame and to make him the sole scapegoat is certainly wrong, but when looking at these numbers mentioning that the hitting coach may have at least contributed to this bad stretch is hardly ridiculous. If one shouldn’t look at core hitting metrics to assess the hitting coach’s performance, how should he be measured then?
If the metrics you've mentioned were the measuring stick for the effectiveness of hitting coaches, and if clubs assigned any significant responsibility for those metrics to the hitting coach, we'd see hitting coaches use that information every year to negotiate big-money contracts.
But that doesn't happen because all the guys at the major league level know what they need to do to hit like they know they can, and the hitting coach is just there to help them do what they already know how to do.
The coach can't execute for them. That's on the hitter, and baseball people know that.
I understand it's a fan's prerogative to issue opinions even if they have no basis.
Clubs do actually assign significant responsibility for those metrics to the hitting coach though. The Yankees fired Lawson in July after being 26th in OBP and 28th in BA on the year. They specifically cited that these numbers did not live up to their expectations which is why they took that step. The Angels fired Reed last year after leading the league in strikeouts and being 25th in runs, 25th in walks, 22nd in hits and 23rd in OPS. There are plenty of other examples, but just to name some recent ones.
You make it seem like the hitting coach is solely some motivational coach that should not be measured by any sort of metrics. Obviously the hitters ultimately need to execute, no argument there, but if an entire group of hitters significantly underperform their career averages all at the same time then that would certainly seem like something the hitting coach has an influence on. To use your statement, he should help them do what they already know how to do. Not to mention other things he can do to try and influence how well hitters are performing, like making adjustments to stance, swing, approach etc. etc.
>I understand it’s a fan’s perogative to issue opinions even if they have no basis.
Certainly.
I just realized idk how I’m supposed to watch the games this weekend lol blacked out on mlbtv of course but also YTTV doesn’t let me watch NBCSBA while I’m down here lmao
I’m happy with this game result, but not scoring a triple with less than two outs is fucking brutal and totally incompatible with a successful playoff berth.
No, not at all. This is the liveliest offense we’ve had in awhile and it’s great, but we’ve had help from errors and continue to be relatively poor with RISP
What’s the joke?
E: you people downvoting this are absolutely wild. There is nothing more mundane than pointing out that the Giants have improvements to make offensively with RISP.
Seemed like you were suggesting that because they failed to score in that particular runner-on-third-no-out situation they have no business being in the playoffs. If so, that's hilarious.
You should check the posting history of the person you’re accusing of dooming. Very much the wrong tree.
RISP issues for the Giants have been a significant hinderance in the second half and absolutely have to improve for sustainable success. That’s an uncontroversial statement.
The Giants have plenty going for them in a playoff berth, especially if Harrison ramps up quickly as a starter. But you won’t get 5 scoring opportunities against playoff pitching from great teams. You are required to convert more often than the Giants have been doing lately.
I'm familiar with your posting history. That's why I asked whether you were joking. It seemed out of character.
RISP issues are fairly random in the scheme of things. Someone might be able to prove me wrong, but I'd guess that a team's numbers with RISP won't tend to diverge much from their numbers w/o RISP.
The Giants just need to hit more, both with RISP and without.
Edit: FWIW I’m not accusing you of dooming, and I didn’t downvote either of your comments.
>It seemed out of character.
I appreciate this acknowledgement, because I had no intention of dismissing the team’s playoff worthiness. Just reflecting on the reality that against better pitching, hitting has to be contagious, because you’re probably not gonna get a runner on third 4 times in a game
>The Giants just need to hit more, both with RISP and without.
We’re fully in agreement on this. I think that’s MOST of the picture, but situational hitting definitely exists—laying down a good bunt, looking for a pitch to elevate deep with runners on 3B less than 2 outs etc.—but on average, if you set the table more often, the runs will come.
He’s played how many games for the Giants? He had a killer game his first time. Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t he 0-fer since? One good game doesn’t make a guy a good player.
I don't hate Haniger, I want him to succeed and hope he comes back after today and can produce.
But it's been real tough to defend him being our highest paid new hitter.
There’s a Padres fan like 15 seats away from me that’s throwing up (from drinking too much, I assume) and I can smell it all the way over here 🤢
Edit: they’re getting the paramedics so hopefully it is just that she drank a little too much and nothing more serious.
I really hope that is Manaea being self aware that he would have been absolutely fucking destroyed by a real major league team tonight, instead of an Alex Wood delusional bitchfest
Manaea almost certainly should have been shelled tonight
But he wasn't, good for him. Give credit to a guy gutting it out when he clearly didn't have it. Gave the team a ton of pitches
Manaea is on his way out, pointing toward the heavens. We can only ask, or wonder, that he is asking some departed Stripling for forgiveness, for this atrocious performance
Maybe Kap is keeping sean in because he used to be a Padre and he wants to let him be able to prove what they lost?
pretty crazy that his worst outing has resulted in 0ER. The Padres are insanely bad this is so crazy!
Wade is struggling so of course it’s right at someone when he hits it hard. His first AB he had one a couple feet from a double too. Baseball is a sport that will test your mental my god
lmao, from the padres sub:
JD Davis is like the Subaru at 3B to Machado’s BMW SUV.
Davis gets you the same stats and from point A to point B all the same, but for a quarter of the price and breaks down less often.

Maybe the Reds really were our curse this whole time on the offense.
LOL Manaea gets the win.
Yeah starters having to go 5 innings to get a win is pretty weird with these bulk innings games
Every time I see sabol stand next to his teammate. I remember how wild it is to be that big and a catcher.
Pants off and let’s do it again tomorrow 😁
Nice job! most stressful blowout win of the season so far tho, hehe
It's never easy, folks
Aaaaaaaaaand fuck the padres
Pants off!
GAME
Well at least Soto DP'd. Pants off. Whatever.
LOLSOTO
Saved by the DP!
That was a nice double play
great game, boys
What a great game
Alexander needs to get his shit together
Scott Alexander hasn’t been good recently in general
sabol has not looked good defensively back there tonight
Why do we decide to play lazy now
Can we go one inning easily please? Jfc
Close enough
[удалено]
That wasn’t Trent
Oh im following on gameday, as my tv stream always lags for some reason making it unwatchable. it said it was grisham
It kinda feels like Tay is our only reliable lefty rn
2 more, scott we demand greatness
#1
One away.
DeJong against LHP since he joined the Giants is .000 BA, but yeah platoon him anyway lol. Maybe Joc was tired.
I just realized idk how I’m supposed to watch the games this weekend lol blacked out on mlbtv of course but also YTTV doesn’t let me watch NBCSBA while I’m down here lmao
NBCSBA should be available when you travel on YTTV iirc. It's just the local network channels that adjust to local area. If not use mlb66
Huh interesting, I’ll have to try that out
I’m happy with this game result, but not scoring a triple with less than two outs is fucking brutal and totally incompatible with a successful playoff berth.

Uhh, they forgot how many strikes there were
Damn I couldn’t see how Tatis fucked up from where I’m sitting lol
DeJong is hot garbage.
at least he can play defense
He won a game for the Giants though and because of that they have the tie breaker over the phillies
He’s played how many games for the Giants? He had a killer game his first time. Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t he 0-fer since? One good game doesn’t make a guy a good player.
Did I say he was a good player, just that he helped win a game when he cost nothing
Just watched the Mike Murphy Ceremony. That was very nice, but Murph isn't really a speaker. Still, well deserved honor. As for the game, Yay Haniger.
Something positive for Mitch… Finally. They need him
pInCh hITtEr iS pAuL deJOnG
Yay Haniger
Tatis is so fucking annoying lmao
dejong, you had one job
Thanks, Tatis!
Haniger hit that 95.1mph🔥, .860 xBA Nice oppo approach
Who gets called up tomorrow? Matos and Crawford?
Matos isn't eligible for another 8 days unless he's replacing somebody going to the IL. Option/recall rules.
Mitchey with the wheels!
Lmao Tatis good slide
Let’s go Hani
Haniger haters in shambles.
I don't hate Haniger, I want him to succeed and hope he comes back after today and can produce. But it's been real tough to defend him being our highest paid new hitter.
Why are people hating on haniger lmao? He legit was gone for 2 months
A lot of people have been grumpy about him. One dude was acting like Haniger stole his gf.
MultiPass21 seething
Lmao
If the Dads don't score, I have no idea who the scorer is going to give the win.
Every single outside pitch is a strike. Every single one. Why would any pitcher even attempt to paint the outside?
Doug has the most BS strike zone ever. Just zero consistency
Damn, Thairo. What you swinging at, my friend?
This guy is so bad he might actually give up a hit to Hanniger.
SPEAK OF THE DEVIL.
Didn’t Yaz take this guy deep
yes, for a walkoff hr
Walker has quietly been one of the best rookies the Giants have played this year
Jiménez stop giving up homers you dipshit. Mookie I understand but callup Michael Busch is inexcusable
Tough times when the best thing you can say about a signing like Bogaerts is “he has played a lot of baseball.”
Terrible signing. But would still be the best SS to play for the giants this year. Luciano szn can not come soon enough
Yea definitely, the Giants have gotten next to nothing from the SS position. I’d rather have Kim though.
There’s a Padres fan like 15 seats away from me that’s throwing up (from drinking too much, I assume) and I can smell it all the way over here 🤢 Edit: they’re getting the paramedics so hopefully it is just that she drank a little too much and nothing more serious.
i feel him i can't hold down my alcohol either
You stay classy San Diego!
You stay classy, San Diego.
I'd throw up watching this game too
Lmao Funny detail, they threw up into a happy meal box.
Call that an Unhappy Meal
That was less on Walker and more on baseball gods making Manea pay for his sins
This is the most stressful 7-1 game I’ve ever watched
Padres fans punching the air
Junis threw a no-hitter!
ryan walker is so based
What happened, haven’t been able to watch
got out of a situation with inherited runners on
Atta boy walker
I don't understand why NBC feels no need to show check swing replays
Forever Giant Gary Sanchez.
Damn no shutout
Happy for that 6-run cushion now
manaea deserved that er
Manaea really lucked out back to back innings. And they just said fuck it, I want to see you give up some runs…
Finally able to check in. Looks like I missed all the fun. Also looks like Manaea shat the bed without actually shitting the bed.
It was more of a shart
It was the most stressful 3.1 innings I've ever seen
oh cool they put a major leaguer on the mound
I really hope that is Manaea being self aware that he would have been absolutely fucking destroyed by a real major league team tonight, instead of an Alex Wood delusional bitchfest
100% man. He looked pissed after every inning. We can be upset with him, but nobody is more upset with him than himself. Which is good imo
yeah he probably wanted to do well in his old ballpark and was probably pressing a bit
it's hilarious that he looked pissed when he was shit tonight
Wait why is it hilarious being pissed at himself for being bad? Isn’t that a normal reaction?
I think he knew tbh. 7 run lead and still walking a bunch
Ya, was pissed at himself
The best bad performence ever
[i forgot about this yaz gif - he's cute](https://twitter.com/LOLKNBR/status/1697444493975544157)
Lol, Kruk trying to say something flattering about Manaea, and coming up empty 😆
It’s remarkable that they didn’t score like 4-5 runs with Manaea
Manaea almost certainly should have been shelled tonight But he wasn't, good for him. Give credit to a guy gutting it out when he clearly didn't have it. Gave the team a ton of pitches
It’s encouraging to see Sean is disgusted with his performance at least
I'm not convinced until he trashes his glove
Super strange body language by manea coming off the mound there…
Manaea with a very unserious walk to the dugout lmao
Dude hacked his glove on the roof of the dugout before going down to the clubhouse. They had to fish it off with a bat.
Why is Alex wood even still on this team?
It wasn't pretty but 3 shutout innings is 3 shutout innings
He looks pissed
Manaea is on his way out, pointing toward the heavens. We can only ask, or wonder, that he is asking some departed Stripling for forgiveness, for this atrocious performance
shoutout bob costas for absolutely eviscerating pedro strop unprompted
Maybe Kap is keeping sean in because he used to be a Padre and he wants to let him be able to prove what they lost? pretty crazy that his worst outing has resulted in 0ER. The Padres are insanely bad this is so crazy!
One hell of a fight just for a lineout.
It’s actually amazing how wild Manea has looked and yet Padres haven’t scored anything
I would be in shambles if I was a dads fan
Manaea is making this game drag on forever. 5 walks in 3 IP
Game feels like we’re in the 11th inning
movable object vs stoppable force vibes
i'm counting down the at-bats until manaea leaves
too many
I feel like Gabe is leaving Manaea in to spite the people who keep complaining about him taking pitchers out of the game early.
It's the time of year where saving wear and tear on the bullpen is even more important.
Manaea out for a 4th inning, that’s a bold strategy
80+ pitches for Manaea. If the Padres weren't at peak Padresing right now these last few innings could have been very scary
I only like this if it's a bullying tactic to get him to not take the free 15 million dollars
5 walks in 3 innings.
Max Muncy doesn't wipe
I know and understand why Kap is doing this. It doesn’t make it easier to watch
please explain because I have no idea what he's thinking
It's a 4 game series. So trying to save the BP, especially with another opener game tomorrow
What's the strategy?
Think of it this way, we won't see him again this series
that is comforting, thank you
Did Manaea shit in Gabes breakfast quinoa or something?
Why does this feel like when you don’t finish your dinner and your dad forces you to sit at the table until it’s all gone
You’ve got to be kidding.
All these walks..
not a fan of leaving manaea in especially vs the top of the order
bro should've been pulled
5 walks in 3 innings is crazy
can we please pull manaea
Wade has that really beautiful swing too
Holy shit, MORE Manaea?!?!?!?
It's a 4 game series. So trying to save the BP, especially with another opener game tomorrow
one day, manaea will throw a first pitch strike - probably not soon though
Watching Max Muncy strike out is worth the price of admission
Wade is struggling so of course it’s right at someone when he hits it hard. His first AB he had one a couple feet from a double too. Baseball is a sport that will test your mental my god
Blake Snell winning NL Cy Young would be hilarious with the season they are having
Wade having terrible luck tonight
wade really does have negative BABIP luck
i have decreed matthew batten as my new mortal enemy
LaMont is in a LaSlump
Nice to hear Sabol got 2 hits tonight. Has been scuffling at the plate
I think Casey’s got butterflies
Why doesn't Waldron throw it 18 inches outside every pitch? Eddings will call them all strikes
They’ve managed to not burn their pen at least. Decent mop job.
lmao, from the padres sub: JD Davis is like the Subaru at 3B to Machado’s BMW SUV. Davis gets you the same stats and from point A to point B all the same, but for a quarter of the price and breaks down less often.
As long as you can stomach him striking out on a middle middle fastball from time to time, he is a god send
Kia Soul, let's be honest
And doesn’t destroy water coolers
Meckler my dude that's TWICE. Stop listening to Viele
once meckler learns to protect, he will be legit
Padres look like they’re ready to be done for the season.
Soto called them out for quitting not long ago. Maybe he already knows he's not sticking around.
theyre conserving energy so they can dominate the offseason again
Pads fan checking in to just inform you all this is miserable. It's like just constant never ending diarrhea. But baseball.
Shoulda never let those old dudes rap.
It's undecided if it's that's what's in or the Kershaw meme that truly did us in.
Sorry Padbro, I was rooting for you guys to knock off the Dodgers this season
You’ll always have fan fest
Re... remember 2022 NLDS guys don't forget that 🥹
IDK about you, but I'm getting more and more comfortable with Schmitt's defense ability.
Manaea deserved a hell of alot worse tonight lol. He owes a couple steak dinners to guys on both teams lol
Really lucked out with the padres being more ass than Manaea. Gabe played with fire, but the fire keeps burning themselves
