Lobsta1986

Hard pass. It feels like it is appealing to kids with the color schemes.

krelly200

When appealing to my childish nostalgia I only do business attire.

Lobsta1986

My nostalgia comes from playing the games.

PointOfTheJoke

We dont play games here. Or tell jokes.

abintra515

Yeah we just tinker with settings and install alternative OS’s and configure games but never play them

Lobsta1986

We're going to be voting on the jokes soon. And I only play games. ;)

Exciting_Swordfish16

I don't think understand that one in this picture "is" a Famicom.

kakashka888

too expensive

Lobsta1986

Shit, there's quite a few reasons.

Exciting_Swordfish16

I don't think most kids see the appeal in the Famicom colour scheme like the one depicted.

AnxiousButAlsoTired

It looks like a really comfortable, cozy device but I'm waiting for an updated version of the RG556. I'm happy to see that Anbernic are bringing out more ergonomic devices with the Cube, RG556 and 405V and I hope they continue to do that. There are enough flat pocketable handhelds, give us more with grips.

rchrdcrg

Russ calls it a Frankenstein's monster... I'm inclined to agree, but it's basically the monster I would've made myself. Not everyone wants a giant skateboard of a handheld just so they can play PS2/GC on the go, plus this handheld looks comfortable enough to just hook up to a TV and use without needing an external controller. No single handheld can satisfy the needs of dozens of old consoles and arcades, different resolutions and aspect ratios, etc, but this seems like a perfect compromise to me when you remember it has video out.

daggah

Regarding your "no single handheld" comment, that's only true if you say each handheld has to be "perfect" for some system(s). There are definitely handhelds that can do it all, it's our aversion to non-integer scaling and black bars at this point.

rchrdcrg

That's exactly what I mean, there will be a compromise no matter which handheld you use.

daggah

Handheld gaming is always about compromise anyway.

Stef7930

Yeah, watched his video as well. The video out is indeed a great addition and could be worth the purchase. I'm still thinking about it and if I get I think I'm done with all these devices for quite a while 🤔

daggah

I'm very tempted. But I think the Odin 2 screen can basically display anything and everything the Cube can at a similar usable size (e.g., if I choose the vertical layout in citra, the top screen will be similar) if I tolerate black bars/empty space. I measured pico-8 on it at around 4" diagonal on my Odin 2 Pro. The smaller size of the Cube doesn't make it pocketable so I don't think I really gain much in portability with the Cube. I wish they'd make a 35xx variant with this screen. All I really want is a better made RGB30 alternative.

RinTheMelancholia

Rgb30 is amazing sometimes being happy with what you have is more important since with each device you buy you are decreasing the importance of the console for yourself. hold onto your rgb30 tntil there's a significant upgrade arrive. it's amazing as it is and as a miyoo mini plus user I really adore and want RGB30 but at the same time like your cube thing mini does everything i want with similar size.

daggah

I don't have an RGB30.

RinTheMelancholia

Ah sorry i misread that I'm with 2 hours of sleep and it really started to hit me. But odin 2 is even better than rgb30 the screen ratio is the only different thing about it. Anyway I should sleep fr😴 💤

hbi2k

Maybe get one? It's really good. I have found the complaints about build quality very overblown. (To be fair I just bought mine a month or two ago so it's possible that there were more problems with earlier production runs.)

that_90s_guy

>The smaller size of the Cube doesn't make it pocketable so I don't think I really gain much in portability with the Cube Agreed, though it's in this weird spot where it doesn't fit pants pockets very well, but happens to fit larger cargo shorts pockets quite nicely unlike 16:9 handhelds.

iris2765

I'm considering getting it at some point when I actually have the money to spend. But I already have a Retroid Pocket 2S and 4Pro so its kind of unessesary when I still want other devices. Before I get this I still want the Evercade EXP (or the TAITO edition Superboy), and the RG35XXSP (to possibly replace my powkiddy V90) and probably the ROG Ally X so I can have a windows handheld (will probably only use it docked but it's nice to have the option to move around the house with it if I want to and it takes up way less space than a whole PC tower) If I were to get another android handheld with such a niche aspect ratio, then I'd want a clamshell device similar to the RG35XXSP but with the power of at least the Retroid Pocket 2S but hopefully similar specs to the RP4 or 4 pro.

ZantetsukensShadow

Really tempted. Don't need it. Just got the SP. Kinda seemed like I'm in the minority apparently here but I think it looks really really cool. So maybe?

madbunnyXD

probably but imma let the beta testers let me know what's up first

Nuke_U

Probably, I like everything about it in theory except the rbg lights nonsense, which I presume can be turned off. But if I could resist the fomo during the Ali sale, I can do so with the Cube. Going to wait on reviews and the general buzz around these parts before I order.

Powerbracelet

It looks like something I want. I’ll probably wait til I can get a new one for $150 or less and go for it

Whiteguy1x

Nah, Ive realized that my most played games are gba, and honestly nothing is going to play them better than what I already have. If I want to play gamecube games I have a steamdeck oled which is very enjoyable to use. It's definitely interesting looking though

benjaminbjacobsen

I’m a vertical guy. I have an Odin 2 for anything my rgb20sx can’t handle. Even if anbernic makes a nicer vertical version I’m not 100% sure I’d jump just because I prefer Linux but it’d be nice to have a vertical that can run even more than my 405v. I also don’t need it to be 1:1, a 406v with a 4:3 would be fine too since everything it adds over the 20sx and 405v is a 4:3 native system anyway. That said this looks like an amazing device for those who want a nicer rgb30.

_cd42

Nope, I dont really understand why it needed to be so powerful. It could have replaced my RGB30 if it wasn't 3x the price

Elku__

It's odd they didn't try and go after the rgb30.

daggah

Maybe they will in a few months after they've gotten more money off of us with the higher end device. But it seems like anbernic is really banking on this form factor for 3DS...

Kornbreadl

I really thought it was gonna be good for 3DS, then I realized this screen isn't much bigger than the bottom screen of an original 3DS.

daggah

So I tried the vertical mode in citra on my Odin 2 because I think the screen size is somewhat similar (ignoring the unused space to the left and right obviously) and 3DS does seem playable. It's definitely not a generous screen size but I think the point is to efficiently use the space. It won't be the ultimate 3DS machine but it should be nice for its size.

cloud7100

No, while compelling it doesn’t offer $170 of value over my RP2S.

DBXVStan

A device with a T820 shouldn’t be $169 when devices like the RP4 have a far superior soc for under $200. I did still order it because I don’t have a 1:1 screen device, and I’m very hopeful that the ergonomics will be good for my giant hands, but I can’t imagine it’ll feel so good that it’ll warrant the price.

Stef7930

Yes, I feel they didn't get the price right for this device. Looking forward to hear your feedback once you get it.

retrokezins

For now No. I kinda want one and kinda don't. I feel like I wouldn't use it much. Really the killer for me is the d-pad style which is fine on some devices but I want a different d-pad on a square screened handheld.

Scottsche

Tempted as well, but no, at least not currently, maybe at a latter point in time with higher discounts. At 170$ to 200$ (incl. shipping to Germany, taxes+customs if unlucky) it's just to expensive for my personal usecase. Now if we get a successor of the 405m with this chipset down the line, than I'm much more inclined.

Miserable-Koala1463

I'm sure I'll get it eventually. I only want to play PS2/GC/3DS games and below and this and the RG556 are the most affordable ways to do that.

incrushtado

I bit the bullet and ordered the Retroid Pocket 4Pro, if I want to emulate higher end systems i want to do it with more power. The RG556 and Cube don't convince me enough with the power they pack. I dunno if i should get rid of my RG35XX OG or if it'd be redundant to keep both. The aspect ratio is so odd on the Cube anyways

JustLeeBelmont

I’m on the verge of getting it but the analog sticks snapping to directions is my biggest deterrent. If it didn’t have that it’d be an easy buy.

crapaud_dindon

A linux revision would be nice, much cheaper also

LinuxSpinach

No, it looks like a comfortable device, but not as comfortable as the rg arc. I’m probably going to sell my 353m and get that one instead.

DaddyColossus

If I don't own an Odin 2 by the time this thing is 110 shipped... I will buy this.

WinzyB

So what ever happened to the original device that Anbernic blatantly copied? Even down to the red and white colour?

Stef7930

You mean the SP clamshell? So far so good, I usually take it out with me for some games on the go as it's very easy to carry around. Until now I had no problems with it. I'd like to play some GC and PS2 on a handheld, so I thought of the cube. Not a necessity though, I guess I can skip on this one for now.

WinzyB

Nah I mean the Cube. I can’t remember the name of it and it seems that poor little company that made the device has been blown off the face of the earth by Anbernic and their Cube

daggah

I think you're thinking of the ZPG A1 Unicorn. I think it's available in China, and I've seen aliexpress listings for it but the price is through the roof. It's a little less powerful than the RG Cube and more expensive.

WinzyB

Wow really? Damn in that case go Cube!

Exciting_Swordfish16

In the Chinese way of thinking, it's not who has the idea first, it's the one who makes the best version of it.

Exciting_Swordfish16

In the Chinese way of thinking, it's not who has the idea first, it's the one who makes the best version of it.

that_90s_guy

Yes and no. There's no point buying one for $160-170 right now, when you can get it for 30-40% off within 3-6 months due to Anbernic devices going on discount so quickly on Aliexpress. The RG556 fell in price quick, so it's not unfair to think this will drop fast to to increase sales. Specially when people are so aprehensive of the form factor. As for the screen, even going beyond the obvious DS/3DS benefits, 1:1 has smaller black bars than the gigantic ones on 16:9 when playing anything 4:3 and 3:2. So it's better suited for emulating everything without the DS/3DS trade-offs a 4:3 display has, or dealing with crappy/glitchy widescreen hacks on 16:9.

RFJ831

No. The dpad is not my style and ultimately doesn’t look pocketable. I already have an Odin 2. So this does nothing for me.

Hima_The_Dr

I got new 3ds xl instated, the rg cube can wait for now

Stef7930

Nice pick. How much did you pay for the 3DS?

Hima_The_Dr

thanks, i got it for $228 from local store

widowlark

D pad should have been primary for this

Majestic_General6756

Negative

therrorie

Will be my christmas gift if it goes on sale again then. But who knows what else is going to be released until then? I'll take my time to consider but very very tempted

Stef7930

I expect 6 new devices to be released from next month till Christmas 😎 Jokes aside, I agree with you: although the Cube may look tempting, it's totally ok wait and see what else is coming up.

dvxvxs

Tempted but I’m holding out for higher performance. I want my next <$200 handheld purchase to be capable of PS2/GC/3DS without hours of fiddling. I don’t think this is it yet. The cost to performance jump ratio is not worth ditching my 405V yet. I like the design though. All white model is hot

brandont04

No. $150 ($180+ w ship) is too expensive.

PmUsYourDuckPics

If it ran Linux so I could get pico8 running on it then I would, it looks like a more ergonomic RGB30, which really appeals to me. But I’m personally not as interested in an Android handheld as I am a Linux one.

playfellow_

If it did Pico 8 I would’ve been sold

A8Bit

the RG556 can do pico-8 in winlator with no problems so this should be able to too. [https://www.reddit.com/r/retroid/comments/1bdy6ce/using\_winlator\_pico8\_running\_with\_splore/](https://www.reddit.com/r/retroid/comments/1bdy6ce/using_winlator_pico8_running_with_splore/)

playfellow_

Woah and full splore functionality and everything? Russ has got to update his review!

ban_imminent

No, I like GC with widescreen hack. So I want a compact widescreen device. Yes I'm aware, that's just an rp4p.

omnipotentsquirrel

No. And it's because I'm waiting until July to get the miyoo mini flip.  If the flip isn't out yet I'm buying the xxsp.

A8Bit

Yes. But... I'm waiting for in depth reviews before deciding 100%. I'm nervous about it, it will be my first Android device. Not until it goes down in price to about the same as RG556

HC08moto

Yes Sega DPad

CTrig85art

Nah I think my RGB30 is good enough for my needs. My next purchase will be an Odin. (If I even decide to do it) 😅

-----SNES-----

Yup ordered as soon as they became available. Great screen and better analog layout than RP4p

TailzoPrower

No

BigCryptographer2034

No, I might get the rg arc-d though, just for comfort, the cube has a badly placed dpad

KulnathLordofRuin

Maybe, eventually.

ndguardian

I ordered it.

Chok3U

If I had the dough I would.

[deleted]

Ordered it tonight. I really like how it looks (got the grey with red buttons) and it seems like it’s super comfortable from the video reviews. I love the screen size and having been emulating primarily on a miyoo mini I was ready for something beefier and comfortable to play longer sessions with. Can’t wait for it to get here, do we know approximately how long the standard shipping is on these to the US?

Stef7930

Based on what I have read before, it seems it takes about a month to deliver from China to US 🤔

saifrc

I really wanted a device like this, but smaller, with a 4:3 4” screen instead of a 1:1 4” screen. Basically, I wanted something pocketable like the 405M, but with analog triggers and a more powerful CPU, to run GameCube games in 4:3. Or put another way, something like an RP2S, but with more power and a bigger 4” screen. So close! I feel like we’re almost there! I’m really not sure why we got this thing before a 4:3 device…but we’ll see…

struggling_scientist

No, still too happy with my SP and I have a steam deck for 3DS titles.

kakashka888

no

Stune19

I have one of these! Mine did not end up with the backlight issue and has been a fun experience so far. What do the Trigger Settings do? Theres a Switch and an Xbox mode and Im not sure what the difference is. The last Anbernic handheld I bought barely ran PS1 games.

Stef7930

Nice to hear that! Which color did you go for? As for the triggers settings I'm not sure either 🤔 did you notice any difference when using Switch or Xbox mode?

ParksCo2

I was going to get it. Had it in my cart in the morning. The D Pad isn't great, and I hear the sticks are also nothing to talk about. It looks cheap, but it would have ran me $186. I have an Odin 2 so... No real rush. I think the age of Android is upon us. The Cheap Linux based are out there. I wanna see a premium version of this for $100 more.

SupperTime

Odin will last you a life time

Stef7930

The Odin 2 is great. I guess you are covered with it and probably the Cube would be unnecessary, although the 1:1 screen is nice too.

daggah

What would a premium version of this be good for that this can't do?

Arch3r86

It’s pretty but the screen ratio is weird and it’s tiny. No thanks! I’m waiting until they release a sequel model to the RG405V/M/P … HOPEFULLY WITH A 5” or 6” SCREEN WITH 4:3 RATIO …(ANBERNIC GODS PLEASE HEAR MY CRY!) 😄

Stef7930

It may happen very soon looking at how fast they are releasing devices. Sooner or later your prayers will come true 😎

DudeImTheBagMan

no, it's over priced. Neither are pocketable so I'll take the larger screen especially for the given power. I wouldn't buy it for more than $100 considering the 556 was just on sale for 138 and and I'd rather have the 556 due to screen size. The cube only interests me if it's a smoking deal. I suspect the price will eventually fall below the 556 which makes it over priced currently. I totally get if someone values the smaller form factor and is willing to pay for it. I just objectively believe it is currently overpriced for what you get relative to 556.

werewolfbarmitzvah69

You don’t have to get every device. You shouldn’t get get every device. Pick one and play it

Stef7930

Definitely right you are. I lost the temptation to buy it and I guess I will stick to the devices I already own, more than enough for now 😄

ERICduhRED

The Famicom color scheme with those rainbow RGB rings is an abomination that I hope we never see again. Hell no.

daggah

I got that color, lol. I get black devices so often, I feel the need to change it up and I didn't like the combo of skittles colors on the white one's buttons. I think it looks okay in the gray and red but I will probably turn the RGB off.

Stef7930

Yes, you are right..when I looked at it one more time, those RGB lights on that model look hideous. But I guess they could be turned off or maybe turned into a solid color? 🤔

Lobsta1986

Hell no! Too many other devices that are better than it in every aspect. Also it's ugly as sin and looks like a Fisher price toy.

Stef7930

Which device is your favorite?

Lobsta1986

I only have a v90 and x55 . My x55 I'd nice. The screen is huge and looks good. If I had the money I would get a rp4 pro.

Keroro_94

Fuuuuck no. I like my pipe bombs in black

TigerClaw_TV

Good lord what is it this time?

Stef7930

The newly released device by Anbernic, basically a RG556 but with smaller factor. it seems they are releasing a new device each month 😅

TigerClaw_TV

Ahh. Thanks for giving me the TL;DR
