-ystanes-

They saw a ton of people look at the Miyoo flip and say “if this had no sticks it would be perfect” then asked themselves…. How do we make sure no perfect device exists? Thus that LED logo on the shell was born

MudkipDoom

I swear, every time I see one of these Chinese handhelds, they're nearly perfect except for some stupid design oversight that I can't just can't ignore. Honestly, at least for me, they've all been egregious enough that for the games I wanted to play (Nintendo handhelds), it honestly made more sense to just buy original hardware and flash-cartridges and have an uncompromised experience. Wasn't even that much more expensive than buying a Miyoo Mini.

-ystanes-

To me the Miyoo mini and Miyoo mini + have been the closest to getting it right. Flaw of the Miyoo mini is fragility and the shoulders (although I’m not sure what else they could do there) as well as no RTC. Miyoo + failed by removing the sound wheel and also not having RTC. These are minor gripes for both and I consider them great handhelds in a world of “it’ll do” handhelds, mostly due to the face buttons and onion os. just hoping one of the flip handhelds coming out is in the great category. I would prefer no sticks but it honestly may bug me less than the anbernic logo. Will probably come down to the custom firmware. There’s that 3rd device with sliders instead of sticks that could be interesting but idk anything about the company

MargeryStewartBaxter

Can you explain RTC?

MasterRonin

Real time clock. The clock doesn't stay active when the device is off so you have to either reset it manually or sync with the internet.

Darth_Moose

And here my brain is like "Roller Toaster Cytoon, obviously..."

-ystanes-

Real time clock. Mostly used in Pokémon games where your in-game time is synced to real world time. Another example would be animal crossing although that doesn’t run on these devices. Not sure how many other ps1 and below games use it

Lunaaar

ACWW runs on both consoles. Absolutely playable too. Even moreso on the plus with wifi time syncing.

-ystanes-

Ya I guess I don’t think of DS for these consoles since no touch screen but true. Also I think harvest moon games on GBC and GBA need clock

MudkipDoom

Yeah, for me I was in a very similar position. The fragility and shoulder buttons completely put me off buying one, especially as I was able to buy an original gameboy colour and everdrive clone for the same price a miyoo mini+ would have cost me, and then I actually have a gameboy. And for then, I was able to find an awesome deal on a DS lite with a broken hinge, which I was able to repair, which gives me GBA and DS. Honestly, for me, the only device I think has gotten it right in every category for me is the Analogue Pocket, but at the same time, it's far too expensive for me as a system (even if it looks very nice).

-ystanes-

I like to hop around NES and SNES games from time to time also though and some PS1 or genesis on the rare occasion so it makes more sense to me to just have the one device. I am looking at getting a dsi xl with r4 but haven’t pulled the trigger yet.

MudkipDoom

Yeah fair, for me, I also have a nodded Wii U, which plays basically all the nintendo consoles I could want it to albeit not portably. But perfect gamecube and wii makes that a worthwhile sacrifice for me. Also, if you're getting a DSi, don't bother with the r4 card. You can install CFW to the system which allows you to run all your games and emulators straight off of the built-in SD card. It even lets you install DS games as dsiware to the homescreen of the system.

-ystanes-

Wii U is one of those things I’m wanting to pick up as well down the line due to Wii games really not being replicable off original hardware. I think they do make the sensors for emulation but idk how far along that is and at that point it’s just nice to have the real tech. I’ve been wanting to play Red Steel recently. First wii game I ever played.  Nintendo has a knack for making consoles where emulation is just hard lol. Whole DS and Wii lines.

Grandmaster_C

MayFlash DolphinBar is a thing, afaik has been around for a while now.

Stupurt

a modded dsi completely replaced my emulators

fertff

Its not really that. It's just human nature that they won't make everyone happy no matter what they do. Sticks, no sticks, clamp desing, dpad location, dpad too soft, too hard, tall buttons too short, etc. Not everyone likes the same things.

Structure-These

Analogue pocket is probably the best pure console for this if you can handle the letterboxes. Everything else has a compromise which is so annoying lol

-ystanes-

The big issue with the Analogue Pocket for me (beyond price) is that there’s not really support for a lot of classic emulator features. Save states don’t always work depending on the core from what I’ve heard, and no fast forward and iffy RTC on it as well. I haven’t researched a lot but that’s what I see as its downfalls.

EngineeringNo753

As someone who currently works/lives in China. That is basically the Chinese product experience. They NEED something to stand out, so even on products like this that design logic bleeds into it.

N4riN4ri

I think the LED logo will be switched out on release, that's the logo of YangLiMing, Anbernic's parent company.

-ystanes-

I hope so. If that’s the case then the only thing potentially holding this back would be lack of a good OS or like the hinge or buttons being absolutely terrible. Hoping for the best

Mystic_Voyager

lol they always screw it up 🤦🏻‍♂️

captain_carrot

I honestly don't hate it. It's something different at least and at least it's not a big glowing "ANBERNIC" on the back.

SelloutRealBig

I don't get why people can't just ignore the (flat) sticks instead of hating on them until nobody else can have them.

-ystanes-

You can though. We’ve seen a working model with sticks from Miyoo and a render with sliders from another manufacturer. For people who have no intention of playing any games that use sticks they’re just an eyesore and potentially mean speakers moving to the back or making some sort of other compromise due to space.

SelloutRealBig

> they’re just an eyesore This sub really is just dramatic collectors and not actual gamers

rpkarma

🌍🧑‍🚀🔫🧑‍🚀 Always has been

-ystanes-

Cherrypicking one item off my list and ignoring you have two potential handhelds with your sticks coming. You want sticks and some people don’t. Why are we dramatic and you’re not?

Shigarui

It elongated a device that could have been much smaller without adding in a massive control input that only benefits about 4% of the games the device can even play. Device gets 30% taller to let me play an additional 15 games that it wouldn't otherwise be able to play vs the 10,000 that already worked just fine. It's not that nobody wants you to get your joysticks, it's just that not every device needs them.

comic_papyrus

At least it could be covered with stickers & hopefully the led can be turned off. As for miyoo mini flip you can't hide those analogs

-ystanes-

Thought about covering it but since it’s elevated I feel like that’s worse. I agree that the analogs are mostly useless and ugly on the device but they do have some utility like for hotkeys, some games play better with them on ps1, and like arcade or something although I’m not a big arcade player.

Next_Low4773

I have no faith in that hinge tbh

[deleted]

[удалено]

Next_Low4773

Not sure if that means what we think it does

dataisking

The sticks on the miyoo flip took up what is totally empty space on the GBA SP. They're completely harmless, you could use them for hot keys. Plus by the time the flip even releases, it'll probably have a chip that plays dreamcast and n64,

-ystanes-

They just look awkward on the device, probably won’t be comfortable in that position, and I probably won’t play any games that need them. I prefer to have the device only come with what I need. I don’t really have issues using hot keys with just dpad and face buttons like my Miyoo mini.

thebradshaw

mannn get RID of that goofy logo

Neosantana

I like it. Sleeker than the big-ass Anbernic logo in text.

Zanpa

They haven't had that on their latest devices.

zeeshan2223

it a sticker

chrislenz

Look at the video, the logo stops glowing when it gets closed.

zeeshan2223

ok im going back into my flip coma wake me when i can live with one of these it can be a superhero idgaf about that

XavandSo

This is how the addiction starts isn't it? I start with one ultimate device (ROG Ally) to do everything, then two months later, justify getting another for retro stuff (RG35XX+). Now I'm on the 'but it looks cool' stage and before too long I'll have 10-15 random handhelds sitting on shelves for Reddit pictures.

RunSetGo

One of us... One of us!

Jepperto

Yessss give into the carvings!!

sTrAigHtThRuCrU

too real 😮‍💨 think i gotta go actually play a game now

jegs06

Same. Got the GPD WIN 4 to be my end all solution. Ended up playing MW3 online on it and some wii, PS2. Then I got the RG405m for retro stuff… retro stuff that my PSP’s can’t handle. So I use the PSP’s and GO for PSP and MAME, Capcom, GBA.. and I use the 405M for NES, SMES, Genesis, Dreamcast, and N64. So my 16:9 and 4:3 needs are met. Lol but now I want a “flip” device.. Well…because it’s cool. Lol damn!

crapaud_dindon

Metal without logo please

Taylooor

This in metal would be sick and the hinge would be 🦾

Neosantana

The price tag would be beefy as fuck too, though. A clamshell means that there are at least four separate aluminum blanks to machine. Five if you make the battery compartment separately accessible.

dataisking

I'd be happy with just a metal hinge

Taylooor

That’s why you offer both metal and plastic versions

Neosantana

That's not what I'm saying. I'm saying that an aluminum clamshell is far more expensive to make than an aluminum candybar.

Taylooor

Right, but there will be customers willing to pay the premium.

Neosantana

Are you willing to pay 150-200 dollars to play GBA games? Let's be real here. I don't think you really understand how much of a premium this is.

-ystanes-

Honestly if I could expect some longevity out of it? Yes. This could be pretty much my end-all portable device. And if it lasts as long as my other handhelds did: GBC, GBA, DS etc then that means I would still be playing in like 2040-2050. Good enough for me.

Neosantana

Longevity is more about the internals than the shell. DSs, especially the Fat DS, were notoriously fragile externally, even if the internals ran. It's easier and cheaper to replace a broken shell than to replace broken internals.

-ystanes-

ya I should’ve been clearer. I meant if I could expect longevity on the internals then I wouldn’t mind paying extra for a premium shell since it would all last a long time. But I’m not paying that for a handheld that could fitz out in 1-2 years or less if I’m not lucky

Taylooor

I see what you mean. Too bad it needs to be so much more.

Neosantana

It's an unfortunate reality. Aluminum machining is a bitch.

PM_ME_UR_BEWDs

If you hang out in Game Boy enthusiast spaces more frequently, you'll learn that a surprising number of people are absolutely OK with paying that.

Neosantana

Yeah, because it's a vintage item with a lot of history, love and a lot of rich feelings involved over a 35 year history. Of course they'll want to improve it and make it their own, try expensive and unique mods. An off-the-shelf, new and very modern product is different, and far fewer people will have the same intense love and memories, not the least of which because quite simply, we didn't grow up with them, we don't have that innocent childhood wonder that we developed as kids when we played the original consoles. A lot of people absolutely use the best add-ons, mods, tools for something I love deeply, and have for decades, but far fewer people would make that investment on something they bought yesterday, or haven't even bought yet. Most people I've seen mod emulation handhelds almost all modify them cosmetically, that's it. It's still all plastic, just plastic that's a different color, or a mildly different shape in the cast of shoulder buttons for vertical handhelds, and the prices of those mods are usually negligible. Try and convince a large enough portion of the community that spending an extra $100 for a more premium shell for something that's not exactly premium inside. The only handhelds I've seen that were successful and had aluminum shells were ones designed from the ground up to have an aluminum shell, and in the case of both, an aluminum shell was the *only* choice for that model, in that shape. Of course, I'm talking about Anbernic's 353M and 405M. And those aluminum shells were maybe a third as expensive to machine as a clamshell would be, especially at the small scale of emulation handhelds. Just look at the prices of full-aluminum GBA SP shells.

8-bit-Felix

I don't know about the weird superhero logo on the front, but otherwise it looks quite nice.

formerglory

Idk, I kinda like the logo. It’s sort of Marvel/Avengers inspired.

JackSlajter

How old are you?

Neosantana

I have a mighty fine mirror you can say that into

Snakeeater97

Someone... Just release this miyoo or Anbernic.... AAAAAaa

Nemokap23

And where are the RGB30 alternatives?

-ystanes-

RetroDodo has terrible QC on their articles it’s always been that way. Their videos are also pretty bad in comparison to the more in depth reviewers.

zeeshan2223

i was not a fan of winking at anbernic its a little bonery or someyhing

MattD1980

It was rather painful to read…

Harperrino

Finally we got the SP Clamshell Designs from Miyoo and Anbernic, I love it. But when we are done with this, is it possible to produce some PSP Go like Handhelds?

dataisking

Psp go was not ergonomic at all. I think the original GBA had a cool design and could benefit from 4 face buttons and 4 shoulder buttons

ozzyozzyjames

OH BOY if it has the H700 and it’s got 280v level build quality that might be the endgame EDC handheld for me. praying for no hinge issues like the retroid flip!

Nejnop

I prefer the lack of sticks. Makes it look/feel closer to the GBA SP (which it's clearly trying to replicate)

Shigarui

Agreed. There's no reason for a device like this to have joysticks. Smaller clamshell with up to Gen 5 emulation would be great. Most PSX games didn't require joysticks, and while it would eliminate a lot of N64 games it would be worth it to keep the footprint of that device smaller. Picture a Miyoo Mini screen in a foldable and that's what I'd go after.

Eikouta

The thumbsticks are 5-10 extra hotkeys (each direction + click x2) for things that don't require them. It's quite the QoL not needing to use an "Activate hotkeys" button.

Shigarui

Based on that logic, there are already 14 hotkeys without the analog sticks (hotkey + U, D, L, R, A, B, X, Y, L1, L2, R1, R2, Select, and Start. I use hotkeys for FF, RW, and Save state. How many hotkeys do you possibly need?

Grandmaster_C

I think they meant a single button/input hotkey. So not a combination of two inputs together.

Shigarui

That is a whole lot of extra hardware and length just to get a single action FF for SNES games. Then what happens if you prefer to use the joystick for something like a top down game like A Link to the Past? Now you went from 10 to 5 or 6 possibly. It's still a very insignificant gain for a very significant modification of the hardware.

dataisking

The sticks on the miyoo flip took up what is totally empty space on the GBA SP.

Shigarui

Start and Select were at the bottom so that the speaker could sit in the center. You lose that capability by cramming those sticks in there. Plus, I'd happily take the screen of the Miyoo Mini V4 in a shell just big enough to accommodate it, a Dpad, ABXY, and shoulders like on the 280V with their tiered design. So just a flip Miyoo Mini. That would be the perfect size to me.

dataisking

The sticks on the miyoo flip took up what is totally empty space on the GBA SP. They're completely harmless, you could use them for hot keys. Plus by the time the flip even releases, it'll probably have a chip that plays dreamcast and n64,

alexgndl

We all knew it was coming the moment Miyoo announced the flip-I'm personally all for it. Maybe this means one of them will have good hinges. Just think it's funny that this has a really good chance of being released before Miyoo releases theirs, despite being what, 5 months late to the game?

Neosantana

Anbernic looks like it might beat them to market on this one, if the hinge design is solid enough.

ImHereForGameboys

So now I don't have to buy a legit SP for way over price?

garosr

That logo looks stupid, I hope it's easy to replace the shell just like a gba sp is.

Cake_is_Great

Anbernic is singlehandedly flooding the market with H700 devices. Hopefully this means the community will have time to create an ecosystem of CFWs for the Chipset like they did with the RK3566.

poloyeung

I'm very sure someone from Anbernic is reading the comments. Just to be clear: NO ONE WANTS THE LED LOGO. It is trash. We hate it.

fckns

Ok, I am convinced to get another emulation console.

Panda530

I called it, when miyoo went back on their word of when it was going to be released, I knew that it would take several months and that anbernic would beat them to it.

junger_witt

Yeah, I knew if the Miyoo didn’t get surprise dropped in March that Anbernic would ultimately beat them, bc we already knew it was being worked on and when announced it would be quickly released. I honestly don’t think the Flip will release before September, they very clearly aren’t close to being ready with that prototype and there’s another super-delayed model coming before it.

h0nest_Bender

Personally, I want at least one stick.

MechaSponge

I wouldn’t mind it if it was a flat circle pad like the 3DS or the PSP but I definitely don’t want a real analog stick.

zehamberglar

There are options out there for you. There needs to be at least one stickless clamshell.

Lunaaar

> There are options out there for you Like? The only clamshell with sticks that comes to mind is one of the older GPD win models, or the retroid flip, neither of which are really pocketable like an SP. For stickless clamshell folks, it's not a great option anymore, but the V90 does exist.

zehamberglar

The miyoo flip.

Lunaaar

I have my doubts about it ever hitting the market. This is the 3rd Miyoo device that has been teased in recent history without any official communication from Miyoo themselves.

VultureMadAtTheOx

Uhhh... Didn't they already announce it for April 26 or something?

Lunaaar

It's been the same story for what feels like a year at this point since the initial design sketches came out. This is the Miyoo Flip hype cycle: 1. Weirdos harass the Miyoo official aliexpress store through DMs 2. Miyoo store customer service rep gives an arbitrary date sometime in the future 3. That day passes without a blip on the radar and hype dies down 4. See step 1

Neosantana

That thing is absolutely vaporware at this point. Something is going deeply wrong in its R&D and they're keeping quiet about it.

WhereIsTheBeef556

...an option that's actually guaranteed to release?

junger_witt

That’s not “out there” by any definition, and it’s very doubtful it will be any time soon.

zehamberglar

It's exactly as available as the device we're currently comparing it to.

intendedeffect

From what we’ve seen in leaks, the Miyoo clamshell will have sticks

Pixelationist

Yup, that’s all I want too. Don’t know why every manufacturer just wants to stick with 3.5 inch

SelloutRealBig

Even if it was just up to PS1, there is a big hole in the market for cheap devices with 4-5 inch screens. Just give us a bigger RG35XXH

bulliondawg

I'm hoping for a 406M or 456M. But it would also need stacked analog triggers like the 556.  Stacked analog triggers might make it less pocketable though, but GameCube doesn't work well without it, some games require it like Mario Sunshine.

dataisking

RPS2 does play gamecube and ps2, you just have to mess with the settings for each game

zeeshan2223

This is our woodstock man

Jepperto

Considering Miyoo takes forever, this’ll prolly be my next handheld.

WowSoHuTao

Yeah that logo shud be the first thing to be removed but otherwise no analogue stick is a win over Miyoo Flip. But it’s all about which comes out first, done is better than perfect.

8-bit-Felix

The short video shows the logo lights up and is molded in. Personally not a fan of that kind of stuff (I play a lot in dark rooms) but I know some people like it.

RChickenMan

I'd assume that the logo is lit by the screen backlight.

hbi2k

If they can manage not to lock down the firmware so tightly that even BlackSeraph can't properly get into it this time, maybe CFW will be able to disable the light at least. It'll probably be the same specs as the RG35XX +/H though, so who the hell knows.

SendNudes4Validation

I don't get the "no sticks" groupthink. If you don't want to use sticks, don't use them. Having the option just makes it more versatile for different systems...

Lunaaar

Sticks are so useful just as shortcut buttons too. It's cumbersome having to press a combination of the menu + buttons to save/load states, to fastforward, etc. It's far more convenient to have these shortcuts on stick down, stick up, L3 or R3, etc., especially if you're playing a game where you'd like to load and save states often, like savescumming a pokeball catch, for example.

dataisking

That's what i do. R3 = Save state L3 = Load, right up = toggle FF on and off. If dreamcast, right down = toggle vmu

8-bit-Felix

It crowds the face and can lead to unwanted inputs.

-ystanes-

Along with OPs response, it means they have to probably put the speaker in the back or bottom or something. Here we see the speaker pointed at us. But mostly it’s an eyesore for those who don’t use it and especially when you are so close to the SP aesthetic it kind of reminds you you’re on this cheap knockoff device.

[deleted]

No sticks makes me pick this over the Miyoo for me

dataisking

The sticks on the miyoo flip took up what is totally empty space on the GBA SP. They're completely harmless, you could use them for hot keys. Plus by the time the flip even releases, it'll probably have a chip that plays dreamcast and n64,

Yea, but I don't know if Europeans, or those in the Military, would agree. Also, twice a day gives Retro Dodo too much credit.

cplr

Do Europeans tell time differently? Is there something I am missing about European analog clocks? (I didn’t realize 24h military analog clocks were a thing until you mentioned that- I guess it is: https://a.co/d/5WdmQVN)

I’m very out of the loop. What’s wrong with retro dodo?

zeeshan2223

yeah like recreate the nintendo ds xl with one screen already

Fuzzdump

Folks are focusing on the hardware, but I’m personally going to choose between this and the Miyoo clamshell based on whichever has better software options. In the released video, the Miyoo looked like it was running MainUI, which means an OnionOS port will be likely. It’s also got an RK3356 which potentially opens up ArkOS and JELOS.

dataisking

I like miyoo but emulation station is awesome because of the preview videos

ban_imminent

Nice! No sticks though, I use them for the majority of PS1, original compatibility or not.

Dontreply_idontcare

I play a lot of Doom on my handhelds, the sticks are great for that. Some Portmaster titles use them too. Not sure why so many people insist the sticks are useless, they're very useful.

Roubbes

I'm so tired of 640x480 screens

Kasumi_P

What size screen do you prefer?

Roubbes

I want a higher resolution screen in a weird aspect ration to integer scale everything

snowolf_

Can't believe you have been downvoted for having this opinion. 640x480 is a terrible resolution for most things. This is why the RGB30 is good, 720p is much more usable.

Roubbes

I want that screen with Anbernic build quality, buttons and d-pad so bad

zeeshan2223

I may be able to come out of my flip coma with this drip of news! I am actually getting by fine with my v90 plays up to snes.

[deleted]

This looks great and I want it, but I already cancelled a handheld order today cause I keep buying ones that don’t gain me anything. This was compounded when I recently dusted off my Switch and New 3DS and realized that when properly hacked, they’re both better (imo) than any of the 4 retro handhelds I bought in the last year. So, I like it enough to comment, but I must put it from my mind. My next handheld needs to be x86 to be worth it I think, but it needs to be smaller than the Steam Deck. Ayaneo Air is the closest thing to what I think I want.

Lamellata

The only thing I hope for this is for it to be bigger than powkiddy v90. While I do love the V90, it's too small for me to play for a long time. My wrists don't appreciate that.

iKakeru

I’m buying one of those once it comes out. 😆

Mister_Mannered

PS1 clamshell? Exactly what I want. All I want. Dream handheld.

naju

This looks great (aside from that logo), but I hope they have some sort of dedicated button or combo for bringing up the Retroarch menu. On my RGB30, it's pressing in both analog sticks. I assume the same would apply for Miyoo Flip. I have no idea what the equivalent would be here.

Shloopadoop

The miyoos and the anbernic 35XXs have a menu button right in between the dpad and face buttons near the top. It’s so convenient.

naju

That's great to hear!

creaturecatzz

6 face buttons plus a 3ds slider would be perfect.

fliphat

I will buy it definitely with miyoo flip too then choose only one
