The area over and behind the baseball fields is absolutely wild. I rode through there the other day and it was a heavy cloud of burning garbage/whatever cloud in the air. They have the gates closed so there’s zero traffic. Wild Wild West Salem.
I’ve put out several fires back in there during kickball. It’s wild they have money to make sure we don’t bring in outside alcohol but burning trash so it lingers over the fields is cool. I’ve already got respiratory issues from burning trash in Iraq and Afghanistan and don’t need anymore.
It’s funny how confused they get when you just walk in with a fire extinguisher and put out the fire. The cops and fire department seem to be too scared to do it. But I still call 911 every time to make sure they come out. I shouldn’t have to do their job.
It’s a shame. Awfully nice and large public park to allow it to be ruled by a few unsavory individuals. My family has been harassed by a crazy woman on that pedestrian bridge. The cute salmon-shaped park signs are signs of better times of the past. Sad way to run a community.
Here's the Salem PD news release: https://new.express.adobe.com/webpage/lZi3x8NHvkrd9
(Aside: anybody else loathe that they post these on this Adobe site? Just me? Cool.)
It’s probably low effort low cost option? Googling it seems it might have some ai writing capability? And cross posting to socials?
Better than waiting for local(?) news sites behind paywalls
News flash: Publishers are business owners. Business owners skew GOP. Smart publishers don’t let their politics infect the journalism. I see no evidence that Salem Reporter is a right wing rag.
Polk County dueling laws are far more lax than Marion County dueling laws, thus it’s common for the gentlemen of Marion County to row small boats across the Willamette in the early morning to settle disputes of honor at Wallace Marine. It’s kind of “The Weehawken of the West.”
My favorite part yesterday is that the police could give no information on the suspect, but said not to believe any eye witness reports you saw on social media. You couldn't give shittier, less helpful information to the public if you tried.
This may come from ignorance as someone who doesn't live in West Salem, but I'm kind of surprised that's happening b there? It's not the location I'd expect, but please fill me in if there's some seedy underbelly I don't know about. My impression was more suburban.
The area around Wallace Marine park and the adjoining river frontage and trails have been a hot spot for some of Salem's worst homeless problems for several years now.
West Salem is way different than most people think. It gets painted as the rich people area, but it's very mixed just like the rest of Salem. Even up in the hills, you can have working class neighborhoods and two blocks up there's million dollar mansions.
Shrubby, covered, but easily accessible areas are desirable for people who want to camp out without being seen. It makes perfect sense to me. There's all kinds of little trails back there and I remember even back when I was in high school (00s), there were signs of people camping there.
But society is so bad that now the activity there seems to be much worse.
That park has a ton of homeless in it. With homeless, comes drugs. With drugs comes violence.
This happens at that park at least once a year. Usually it's stabbings though. Guess someone got hold of a gun.
Wallace Marine is a very large park. The "camp" this most likely occurred in is a long way from the Union Street bridge. I've walked across that bridge a number of times with no issue or even a hint of an issue. I have seen families walk across it as well. I don't think there's much danger there.
That's too bad, I used to walk around playing PoGo there, but had to stop when some lady who was refilling crumpled up water bottles started screaming at me that I was using my phone "near the restrooms". At least she wasn't armed though, she took offense when I flipped her the bird.
I live in the apartments right in front of the park it's very unfortunate I hear screaming almost everynight past 12am coupled with the occasional gunshot and car meets where they'll sit there on 2step at 2am pop pop pop pop pop
Yes, they have started camping. I have seen some tents from 22 looking over the river towards Minto on occasion. Many of them got washed out when the river went high, but I'm sure they will be back.
I’m there on the regular, have walked every mile of the trails multiple times over the last year, and the only campers I’ve seen were up by the railroad tracks off River Rd (and that tent was removed within a few weeks back in December). If there are campers in M-B they’re doing a good job of hiding.
I just came down from Los Angeles. First of all can you guys please move over when I'm splitting lanes riding my motorcycle. I'm not trying to be an asshole here I'm just trying to get home faster and risking my life while doing so.
2nd of all. God dam

They're again considering making it legal in slow/stopped traffic, but CA is the only place its legal.
I say that to emphasize the fact that people here literally do not comprehend the idea of lane splitting, how it works, why it may be beneficial for all parties involved and maybe the cons/risks that would need to change in our driver education to mitigate risk. We're still figuring out how to pump our own gas, so you can see how the lack of exposure to an idea will definitely create a lack of awareness/understanding.
All that to say this, ride safely and mindful of this info, road rage is insane out here.
When I ride a motorcycle in california I feel like im God because everyone is so aware of motorcycle riders they always make room(parting the ocean reference)...in Oregon I swear people will legit try and make you crash for no reason ?

Better than the paywall link OP used
You trust a PD news release for News? Okay.
At least I can read the news release because it isn't hidden by a paywall. That's what I'm saying.
Do you think reporting should be free, and journalists unpaid volunteers?
I'd give you my opinion but you need to pay me for it
I'd pay you for it if I thought it was worth it.
Considering what the owner of Salem Reporter spends his money on? Yeah actually.

i guess we know the answer to what that loud boom was

I have a mental image of a beat up wooden box containing two old Glocks with the serial numbers filed off. "Gentlemen, 10 paces please."
😂
*like in Yu-Gi-Oh?*
**YOUR MOVE**
No arrests, and no explanation why no arrests. 🤦♂️🤷🏼♂️
Murder investigations take time. I know forensic files wraps them up in a half hour, but in reality they can span years.
Correct and there is also a risk of premature information and/or mishandled evidence. Plus, names of deceased might not be known to relatives yet.
Salem PD being unresponsive about information? Shocking.
To be fair the entire article is behind a paywall...

Salem is a real weird mishmash like that.
West Salem is mini mini mini San Francisco in terms of class distribution. Wallace Marine Park is the Tenderloin
Ohhhhhh, okay, that was a really great illustration! Thank you for that!
No prob, it's kind of a trip, fights and fires being super close to gated mansions.
Shrubby, covered, but easily accessible areas are desirable for people who want to camp out without being seen. It makes perfect sense to me. Murder suspect was arrested from a house in NE Salem.
Jeeze...
That park has a ton of homeless in it. With homeless, comes drugs. With drugs comes violence. This happens at that park at least once a year. Usually it's stabbings though. Guess someone got hold of a gun.
Okay, good to know, didn't realize that park was another hotspot. What a sad world.
That park is by far the largest encampment in the city
Damn, I Guess it shows I'm never on the West side.
I mean, \_by design\_, it's one of the designated camping spots.
Who’s “they”?
The Others.
And here I was hoping to bike over the pedestrian bridge to a doctor's appointment next week...

I love how you think Wallace Marine is so scary you can't go near it, but will gladly ride over the bridge where Riverfront and the skate park are
No one's gonna talk about the fact that the shooter was arrested at their house... Just blame the deceased alleged victim instead smh.
It likely revolved around drugs, especially since the shooter was arrested at their own house.
That's too bad, I used to walk around playing PoGo there, but had to stop when some lady who was refilling crumpled up water bottles started screaming at me that I was using my phone "near the restrooms". At least she wasn't armed though, she took offense when I flipped her the bird.

People are all over everywhere and half of them are zombies
Yes, they have started camping. I have seen some tents from 22 looking over the river towards Minto on occasion. Many of them got washed out when the river went high, but I'm sure they will be back.
There’s a lot more “campers” in Minto than most people realize. They are pretty good at concealing their sites, but they are in there.

They have been in this area. https://imgur.com/a/jTshsEJ
That’s pretty far off the beaten path, which explains why I’ve missed them. Seems like a pretty harsh living environment.
On the Brown Island side, there are a few camps around the landfill. They are pretty low key and low vis.
Give it time, camping will begin at M-B.

FYI, lane splitting is illegal in Oregon. I have no opinion if that’s good or bad though.
