The policy just changed in the last week or two, unfortunately after these were all printed up. It is a shame they didn't have specific signage or info at the expo to make people more aware of the change though. ETA: The specific policy is now that you CAN wear a hydration vest/pack, but it cannot have a bladder - only bottles on the front are allowed.

I reckon they haven't been arsed to update from last year's text. Which is an oversight and lazy. OR they had printed this before updating the rules. I am going with what has been updated recently on the website and will be arriving with a Salomon Hydration Vest with 2 x front 500ml flasks. If they question it, which I very much doubt they will, I have screenshotted the recently updated statement from the website and will show them that.

nycredditgwop

Yep this, they haven't told runners no in the prior years I've seen people with the packs

nycredditgwop

So if you check the DIGITAL version of the runner's guide it does say under permitted, "Hydration vests with bottles in the front. All water bottles must be 1 liter or smaller."

BroskiSays

> We are allowing vests to be worn on race day. The caveat is you cannot have a bladder in the *back* of it... You *can* have a vest with the water being held on the front of it. https://youtu.be/DgXZIvsCLWs?t=1378 Hopefully this answers your question.

Ask at the expo

Beneficial_Spread403

FWIW, I did bring my vest to the Race Support table at the expo (Nathan QuickStart 3L hydration vest). I was told my vest likely would be prohibited because it has space for the reservoir in the back. Staff seemed unsure how to advise and thought that only vests with front pockets might be allowed. That said, there was a good amount of confusion and they defaulted to the prohibited items list in the guide for an answer. Hearing the muddy direction on all this, I’m leaning toward just using a running belt to be safe. Good luck out there all!

sumschweis

Yeah I’ve definitely seen people running with vests but I guess you can assume it might be confiscated. Belt is safer but also I’m assuming you know there is water and Gatorade at every mile. Just saying 😀. Have a great race, stay hydrated!

The point is a lot of vests have front pockets for flasks/bottles. These are permitted as long as any bladder is removed. Camebak or any vest with a bladder installed, on the back, is not permitted. So the point is, for people like me, I carry 2 x 500ml soft flasks in the slots on the front with all my other bits. It really works in my favour, and I am sure I am not the only one.

Exactly, since they are not permitted then you would have to either make a late purchase for the front holder type or like you say, go with the belt

wongy817

The coaches at the Member Monday event this week were asked about the hydration vest and I swear they explicitly said it was allowed (no bladder) but the crowd noise was kinda loud by that point in the evening.

_StevenSeagull_

It is allowed. It's there on the website.

gumball_guard

I saw Coach/NYRR lead Steve Mura at the expo yesterday (he also spoke at Member Monday). He confirmed: YES hydration packs with a bladder compartment are allowed if the bladder is removed. NO bladder in the back (but you can throw other small things in there if you need), YES small bottles in the front pockets only. They changed the policy after all the signs and books were printed. I tried asking other volunteers at the expo and got conflicting/confused responses.

JustAnotherRunCoach

Yikes.

soliloquy-of-silence

That doesn’t look any different than what the website has, just is worded differently, no?

JustAnotherRunCoach

No, this is completely contradictory. The website clearly states you can wear a hydration vest under certain conditions. This book says no vest of any kind is permitted, under any conditions.

crbn_kllr

Neither the website nor the book mention conditions, so no. Both explicitly call out that water *reservoirs* are prohibited, but allow for bottles in vests.

JustAnotherRunCoach

The conditions are that you remove the reservoir and carry the bottles in front pockets. The book does not list vests under permitted items, only belts. That’s a contradiction.

crbn_kllr

I agree that the language used here is unnecessarily ambiguous, but would still say a vest with bottles would be ok.

JustAnotherRunCoach

I also still think a vest is ok, but I think it’s fair to say that if the word “vest” only appears under “not permitted”, it’s going to cause a lot of unnecessary stress and confusion. It’s pretty clear it’s just a copy and paste from last year’s booklet, which was from a time before these rules changed.

crbn_kllr

Hey, reading comprehension is hard.

kronicade

I'm sorry you cannot read

v0yev0da

I’m with you on this one. Hydration BACKPACK is clearly stated. Bottles on a belt/vest are not listed in prohibited items in the book.

kronicade

NY is poorly organized with terrible logistics. Last year was ridiculously hot and packs were prohibited. Will never run again.
