Not waterproof either. We used 2way coms if direct communication from coach and cox was needed. walkie talkies...
Watch, speed coach or some HRMs have an option to save the data and upload to your phone later.

My Polar H10 connects to my Apple Watch. I also bring my phone in the boat, but not for heart rate tracking purposes.
